House republicans filed a lawsuit over the way the law was implemented. The suit ayou kood president obama of unlawfully delaying the requirement that Many Employers provide Health Care Coverage for their workers. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi calls the lawsuit a bald faced attempt to achieve what theyve been unable to achieve through the political process. The suit was filed hours after president obama announced hell act on his own to reform the immigration system. And his decision is further infuriating republicans. Joining us now to talk about all of this is moderator of meet the press chuck todd. Is it the timing of the Health Care Lawsuit a coincidence . No, i dont think its a coincidence. You have to look at it in this respect, house and senate republicans, theyve got their own struggles on how to respond to the president on what he did on immigration. They have conservative members of both the house and senate who want real political retribution against the president. Who believe hes been overstepping his legal authority. So a few months ago to quiet the impeachment wing of his party, john boehner announced this idea of a lawsuit. Hed been dragging his feet on the lawsuit. It took him a while to get it together. The fact that it came out today i think is no accident. They are concerned that some of their conservative members will be unhappy that Republican Leaders arent responding aggressive enough. If thats the case, theyre hoping this lawsuit is a way to remind them, keep your powder dry, were doing what we can. Lets talk about today. The president went to nevada to sign the immigration executive action. Why did he choose las vegas . Well, look, nevada, large hispanic population. This is where, by the way, he went to the same place he went when he announced his Immigration Reform proposal back in the start of 2013, which the framework ended up being the senate bill that was passed later that year. It was more of sort of going back to the place we launched this. Republicans will soon control congress. Its up to them to decide whether to do something legislatively. What is their next move likely to be . Well, i tell you, theyre trying to figure that out, because going the Government Operations route, potentially forcing a government shutdown, it may not work. And politically thats not gone well for republicans in the past. Leaders dont want that. The other way to sort of stop this, make the president rescind is to pass their own bill of some sort. But the House Republicans had 18 months and they couldnt come up with even something that the president would veto. They have nothing. They have no bill to hang their hat on. I think the third avenue theyre hoping for is that some other entity soothes the president on this specific decision, on this specific executive order. For instance, the state of texas, an attorney general from the state of oklahoma are both talking about ways to do it. I think eeim in Congress Hope thats what happens and then they can deflect and tell conservatives they would like something more, hey, give this lawsuit time. So much left to see. Chuck todd, moderator of meet the press. Thank you so much for joining us. Of course, you can watch meet the press this sunday morning at 10 30 right here on nbc 10.
