Less contra banned in the classroom means they dont have to stop what theyre doing and process an arrest. The district came up with this program but the boxes are being designed by students. This metal box may not look like much but its a source of great pride for these students at Randolph Technical High School in east falls. Originally it was going to be a wooden box with a metal frame. I said why would it be a wooden box . Theres going to be firearms in there. Reporter the teams in this welding class are designing these amnesty boxes as theyre called that will be placed in philadelphia high schools that have a history of weapons or drug problems. Students can drop off contra banned before they go through the metal detectors, no question asked. Because the drop box will be in the entrance of school, is it truly anonymous . It is because my personnel have been instructed whoever puts something in the drop box can go along about their business. They still have to go through the scan but now ostensively theyve gotten rid of contraband or a weapon. Reporter representatives responsible for donating the Welding Equipment couldnt help but marvel at the students ingenuity. Anytime you can make a connection with how the students learn with something that can impact the local people in the local community, you havec ownership. Im glad im part of it. If its a live saved, im glad i definitely helped. Reporter these six high schools where the boxes will be placed have not been named yet but the chief inspector tells me theyll be at locations where theres been a history of violence or drug problems, both in the school and in the neighborhood.
