Lets get to that weather with cheryl grossman. When i saw 50s for today, i was shocked. I couldnt believe it. Were mild today, but we have cold air coming. We are partly cloudy, we are dry, we are quiet. A perfect way to start the weekend. This morning, temperatures right around the freezing mark. 34 in difficult fefphiladelphia. 31 degrees in Atlantic City and 35 in dover. Bundle up this morning, we are off to a cold start but well warm up nicely as we head into the afternoon hours. Lots of warm air across the area. Throughout the day by 8 00 a. M. , 39 degrees. By 10 00 a. M. , 46 degrees. Lunchtime, 51 degrees. It will be cool but still warmer this time of year. First the clouds, then the showers tomorrow, and were looking for a little rain in the 7day. Well talk about that in a few minutes. Today Law Enforcement from all over the country will be in new york city to pay their respects to one of the Police Officers killed in last saturdays ambush attack. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live in philadelphia where some local officers are gathering to head to new york. Matt . Weve seen a steady stream of officers arriving here in the past 30 minutes. We are at lodge 5 in northeast philadelphia. You can see the parking lot here, the cars have been pulling in quite steadily in the past hour or so. More than 100 officers from our area are dpegetting ready to le by bus. They will be heading to new york for the funeral of officer rafael ramos. A plan right now is to leave at 6 00. Thousands of people are expected to attend the funeral later this morning, and thousands of Police Officers from around the country already attended a wake for officer ramos on thursday. Both ramos and his partner, officer wenjian liu, were shot while sitting in their patrol car in brooklyn last saturday. Vice President Joe Biden and new york mayor bill de blasio are expected to be among those speaking at the Funeral Service today, and arrangements have not yet been made for officer liu. As we take another live look outside lodge 5 in philadelphia, you can see theres not much activity out here at the moment. The officers are gathering, theyre going inside, theyre getting some coffee, greeting each other and then the buses will arrive shortly, im told, and then they will board and head to new york. There is also a digital sign out in front of the building that reads, god bless our assassinated nypd brothers and pray for officer ramos while he is laid to rest. I just spoke to one of the organizers. The bus will be pulling up, and among the people who will be joining these officers, they will be retired and active duty, so were expecting a little more than 100. They will have two buses picking up these officers. They will head to new york city later this morning. In fact, one of the officers just told me that a few minutes before we arrived, one of the officers was dropped off by his wife. She gave him a big hug before departing, and so we will be out here following this, and were going to hope to talk to some of the folks here later this morning before they head off. This weekend Family Friends and colleagues are mourning a longtime philadelphia homicide detective who was credited for arresting convicted cop killer jamal. He died yesterday. He was 73 years old. He was a vietnam war veteran who served in the Philadelphia Police department for 30 years before retiring. He then joined the Defenders Association for 18 years. He was the man who arrested abu jamal for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia Police officer darren faulkner. Earlier this year, jamal was at the center of a commencement controversy. He gave a speech at a college via audio recording. It prompted protests. Jamal is serving a life sentence. Now to news in bucks county. Officers will decide what this man should be charged with following a hit and run. The driver hit this home. He barely missed 93yearold jenny derusso who was in bed at the time. She was not physically hurt but was shaken up. She passed away hours later. Toxicology tests are being done to determine if any substances played a role in this crash. In montgomery county, two people are the hospital following this crash. This happened before 8 00 last flight on germantown pike. Police say a car crossed the center line and hit a parked car. Fire and rescue crews pulled the victims from the wreckage. Both are being treated for serious injuries. Investigators are looking into the exact cause of this accident. This morning the American Red Cross is providing emergency aid to five people who were affected by a fire at an apartment complex in philadelphias lawndale neighborhood. The fire started around 7 30 last night on north street. Fire crews had it under control. About 15 minutes later, the flames burned through one apartment. Two others had smoke damage. No one was hurt. Now to a developing story. North korea is resorting to threats and namecalling after the u. S. Release of the controversial movie the interview. North korea is blaming the u. S. For shutting down its internet this week. Theyre calling it an alleged retaliation for that cyber attack on sony pictures. The countrys National Defense Commission Also made a racist remark about president obama. The regime said he was behind sonys release of the film on line and at small theaters. As for the threats, north korea released this statement. It says in part, if the u. S. Persists in american style, arrogant, highhanded and gangster practices, despite the warnings of the republic of korea, the u. S. Two holdups in our area yesterday are the work of a serial robber. They sent us these photos of the suspect. The images are from the pnc bank at southeast rhodes. The suspect said he had a gun but did not show it to the tellers. Investigators think this is the same man who tried to rob a Wells Fargo Bank in West Philadelphia earlier in the day. Police are also linking the suspect to four Successful Bank robberies in the city since december 11. This morning we are learning that the accused ringleader of a philadelphia dog fighting operation will stand trial. Carlton lane is facing a series of charges involving cruelty to animals. The pennsylvania spca says officers removed 13 dogs from lanes house in south philadelphia along with dog fighting equipment. As you can see in these pictures, the doctors are doing just fine and they are now up for adoption. The future of the School District in South Central pennsylvania is now up to the state. Yesterday a judge ordered that the york School District be placed in receivership. That means its now in the financial control of one of the governor tom corbetts appoin e appointees. That appointee wants to convert the Public School in new york to a charter school. Yesterday we spoke to someone representing york county schools. Disappointed. Its that simple. A proposed constitutional amendment before state lawmakers would raise the retirement age for state judges from 70 to 75. 20 judges turn 70 years old next year.
