Weekend, carla was among the first to hit the sand on ship bottoms newly widened beach. Out here early to beat the crowd. Our beach is very big. I think we have a lot of space this year. Reporter after a rainy thursday sunshine and a long line of slowmoving traffic greeted those making their way to Long Beach Island this morning. At the sand box cafe the wait for a table was at least 45 minutes. We think today is the busiest day weve seen so far this summer. Going great. We were gearing up for it with the rain yesterday. We prayed for sunshine and someone heard our prayers. Reporter in Sea Isle City waves of people have been hitting the surf. The sand packed too. First time right . Reporter although this 11 week old spent most of his day under cover. Stay under that tent. He will be 100 uv protected. Shirt, hat, all of it. They cant wear sunscreen until six months. Reporter dalton is back in his home state for the Holiday Weekend from new mexico. Where hes stationed for the air force. Its amazing. I wish the sun was out more but its still a lovely day. Meantime security is tightening across the world this Holiday Weekend because of terrorism concerns. The government says there is no specific threat but they want everyone to be vigilant and prepared. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live on the ben franklin parkway where philadelphia officials revealed their security plans as hundreds of thousands converge on the city this weekend. What did they say . Reporter well they would not give out specifics but they do say the city wants people to come down to welcome america and one of the venues you might hit, the road to rio. This is something that is new that they are just putting the finishing touches on right now. In this corner they will have a green screen where you can look like you are standing next to the olympic torch. In this corner they will have a ring, the olympic rings. Then in this corner, this is the cool thing. Put on this headset here and this will give you a 360 degree experience of being at one of the events whether its diving or Beach Volleyball or whatever it is. So they expect thousands, maybe tens of thousands of people to make their way through this exhibit over the next few days. This as people come down here under a Terror Threat warning. Philadelphias historic areas are awash in a crowd of tourists all wanting to see the origins of our democracy. Growing up i didnt have this opportunity to be able to go to trips like this. An army of Philadelphia Police is joined by the fbi, park service and Homeland Security officers. Additionally, there are more clandestine measures. According to the deputy mayor. The nbc 10 investigators sat down with the fbi to see what they are doing to keep folks safe in philadelphia. The steps they are taking ahead at 4 30. Heres a look at the other preparations happening for other events in center city. A live look at the stage being prepared in front of the art museum for tomorrow nights big concert. There is still work to be done but thousands will crowd along the parkway to listen to some amazing acts. The philly fourth of july jam starts at 7 00 p. M. Philadelphias own the roots are the headliners. Miguel and Jennifer Nettles will wow the crowd. Fireworks are set to begin at 10 30 p. M. After the concert ends. The fireworks already all loaded ready to go for tomorrow nights explosion of light and sound. Crews brought the shells into the area around the art museum this morning. Thousands will be used each minute for the july fourth show along the parkway. Many of them custom made. Take your blankets and beach chairs to Independence Hall tonight for a free outdoor concert by the philly pops. We were there as they rehearsed this afternoon at the kimmel center. The music ranges from patriotic and american favorites to broadway hits and disco. Maybe there will be surprises as well. New information about an fbi raid at city hall in allentown. It speculates the fbi is looking into the citys contracting process. Everything is quiet today. City hall is closed for the holiday. Agents showed up at city hall yesterday and questioned the mayor. Agents seized documents pertaining to bidding and contracts for grand jury investigation. So far no city officials or employees have been subpoenaed to testify or told they are a target of the probe. The city statement says leaders have acted properly at all times. We knocked on the mayors door to ask him directly. No one answered. New information this afternoon in the shooting of a Camden Police officer. Detectives identified the suspect who shot the officer as victor bennett. Theres a 1500 reward for information that leads to his arrest. Police say bennett shot at officer prince reeds car. The officer was hit in the arm with a bullet fragment. He searched for the suspect before heading to the hospital. New information in the case of an elderly woman murdered in East Mount Airy and the search for her killers. The three People Police questioned last night were released. Nbc 10s cydney long with what was learned today. Reporter we now know one woman and two men were not detained overnight by homicide detectives but exactly what information they gave up or their relationship to the victim, if any, is not clear. It comes as Police Detectives are analyzing a key piece of evidence, a laptop computer that belonged to the victim but seized inside a home in West Oak Lane on bouvier street making people who live there concerned about any potential connection. Apparently no longer needed as evidence murder vick testimony regina brueners silver toyota sits parked in her driveway covered in fingerprint residue. At close glance you can see where detectives were able to lift fingerprints that may point to the 85yearolds killer or killers. A source confirmed the vehicle stolen at some point in the moments or hours after her throat was slashed, changed hands at least once in the days after her death. I just saw a lot of police cars on the corner. Reporter meantime neighbors who live along bouvier street watched as detectives seized a laptop computer from this home thursday. It belongs to bruener and brought three people into questioning by police late last night. If thats the case and they did catch somebody with that laptop i hope they get the person that did it because thats really insane that you would take an elderly womans life over whatever reason. Reporter he was friendly with the victim having been a neighbor for many years. He wants whoever killed her caught. Her husband died a few years ago and then she lived with some other gentleman and i hear he was in the hospital. At the time. Reporter he went on to tell me he does not have one and is not aware of any neighbors that have outdoor surveillance cameras. We also asked police and homicide detectives if they plan to release any of the Surveillance Video of the suspects using this victims atm card. We did not hear back from them today. They have been working this case day in and day out all week but remained very quiet today. Im cydney long, nbc 10 news. Homicide investigators are looking into a quadruple shooting that left two people dead in nicetown around 2 00 this morning. A masked gunman walked up to a group of people attempting to rob them but one of the people in the group had an Assault Rifle and a gun battle broke out. Two men are dead including the robbery suspect. Two others are in the hospital. Lot of people complained about the slow response of Atlantic City electric to last weeks power outages. Now the new jersey board of Public Utilities is taking a look. Storms put thousands in the dark for almost a week. Three state lawmakers wrote a letter to the utilities board complaining about ac electrics response. They say the utility refused to coordinate its efforts with local towns. Ac electric says it will cooperate with the review and look for ways to be more efficient. The Baltimore City Police Department has launched an internal investigation after a picture went viral. It shows a message on the inside of a police van saying enjoy your ride because we sure will. Someone snapped a picture of this on tuesday. The Police Department says this is concerning and unacceptable and the department is taking it very seriously. The photos come as six officers are charged in connection with the death of freddie gray. Gray was arrested in april and suffered from injuries while in police custody. His death a week later sparked protests and riots in baltimore. New York State Police are trying to unravel exactly what happened while two escaped murderers were on the run. They are trying to figure out who owned a backpack that david sweat was carrying when he was shot near the canadian border. He had maps tools and other items in that backpack when he was caught sunday. Troopers believe it was stolen from a camp. Sweats accomplice david matt was shot and killed two days before sweat was captured. His body has been disposed of in accordance with the wishes of his son. There was no funeral but its unclear if he was buried or cremated. The convicted mudder ermurderers were on the run for nearly three weeks. A dozen people have been suspended from their positions at the prison including the top boss and his deputy. Tennessee residents are back in their homes after the threat from a Train Derailment and fire ended. Thousands of people were forced to evacuate yesterday when a train carrying toxic chemicals went off the rails and burst into flames. The fire is now out. 87 people were treated at a local hospital. Most were experiencing respiratory issues skin irritation and nausea. All are expected to be okay. There were no air monitoring that indicates that theres any issues. The Freight Train was heading from cincinnati to southern georgia when it derailed. The cause is not yet known. The tables have turned in North Carolina today. The hunter became the hunted when a fisherman went after a shark. Check out these pictures sent to our sister station in charlotte. A fisherman reeled in this shark in kill devil hills. Its about 6 1 2 feet long. The fisherman did release it back into the ocean. So far this year there have been 25 unprovoked shark attacks in the u. S. 11 of them in florida, seven in North Carolina. Four in south carolina. A twist in the Corruption Case against new jersey senator bob menendez. Prosecutors are trying to keep some evidence out of the hands of the senators attorneys. They say there are National Security concerns. Prosecutors asked a judge to decide. Menendez is accused of conspiracy and bribery for allegedly accepting gifts from a florida eye doctor in exchange for political favors. He has pleaded not guilty. Hispanic leaders are calling on the Republican Party to condemn donald trump. Trump is refusing to apologize for calling mexican immigrants rapists and drug dealers. Many republican candidates have avoided the issue all together. The political and practical trump related fallout has intensified in recent days. A number of Big Companies have stopped doing business with trump, including Nbc Universal. Trump of course one of 14 declared gop president ial candidates. Two more are expected to join the race this month. There are five candidates on the democratic side vying for their partys nomination. Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter is heading to mexico on a mission to build economic ties. He will visit puebla as part of the trip starting monday. The goal is economic collaboration. Theres a big exhibit at the National Constitution center where people are able to step back in time to see what it was like 50 years ago. A lot of people who were at that protest are back in philly this weekend to mark the celebration of the movement. Theres still work to be done but i think no American Group in the last 50 years has ever made such astonishing progress progress that we couldnt even conceive of when i began. The exhibit at the National Constitution center will be open until january. A new report finds there is no evidence irs employees were told to destroy or hide information in an email scandal. Thousands of emails were lost when backup tapes were erased. That happened to a former irs official who was under investigation for her treatment of conservative groups like the tea party. This report finds theres no evidence the irs tried to hide evidence from investigators. Instead the erased tapes seemed to be a mistake, not a coverup. The markets werent open today to observe the july fourth holiday but closed lower yesterday ahead of greeces sunday referendum. That vote this weekend is about whether to accept creditor demands in return for bailout funds. Tension it isess are high in greece. There are long lines outside atms as people try to get the smallest amount of money they are allowed each day, 60. The vote could impact how the markets open on monday. A nice even spread with the temperatures with the air coming off the ocean but the ocean is warm so thats helping us as well. We are seeing quiet conditions in terms of any rainfall. We are seeing partly cloudy skies and could see a few stray showers tonight. But most of this system is going to travel just to the south of us. We will see a few scattered showers from that actual system heading to the north. I will show you what i mean by the future cast. You will notice a lot of that moisture stays to the north of our area although as we head into tomorrow morning, we could start to see a little bit of light shower activity near the Lehigh Valley stretching down into Lancaster County and baltimore seeing moderate to heavy rainfall. As we progress the model here one thing we are concerned about, the latest model is just now showing a little bit more shower activity right along the shore close to 1 00 p. M. We could even see heavy downpours to the south of sussex county. These are going to be shortlived so i wouldnt necessarily say its not a beach day tomorrow. Just know we will see mostly cloudy conditions and the chance of a few passing showers and maybe an isolated thunderstorm. We will start to see clearing saturday night, which is great, especially for the fireworks. Heres a closer look at the beach and shore cast. Things are really clouding up by the time you wake up to head out to the beach. Expect mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures are going to be in the 70s here. They will stay in the 70s as we go into the rest of tomorrow. It will be comfortable out. We just have to watch for the few passing showers as we get into the afternoon hours. As far as the poconos are concerned, as we head into saturday, 72 degrees with a slight chance of showers. Temperatures warm up between saturday and sunday. On sunday, 78. Plenty of sunshine expected. We have a moderate risk of rip currents. Be really careful, keep a close eye on the kids as they go in the water. Saturday, 75 degrees, cloudy with a chance of showers. As we take a look at sunday we are going to see more sunshine 80 degrees, the water temperature at 72. As far as tonights concerned, we will see mostly cloudy skies. The chance of just a few little stray showers. Temperatures drop down to 66 degrees for philadelphia 64 for the suburbs to the north and west but still comfortable. Passing showers expected tomorrow. Things get more interesting as we head into tomorrow. Heres a closer look at the radar. You can see its completely dry. One thing we are watching to see if any of these showers start to transition into our area. The brunt of the moisture will stay well outside of our area. In fact the area of low pressure thats causing all these showers is going to stay to the south of us. We dont have to worry about all that rain moving in. I want to show you the chance of a few stray showers heading into the rest of tonight. As we get into tomorrow morning, thats when we will keep a close eye on whats happening just outside of our area. Thats whats going to give us a chance of showers throughout the day heading into your holiday. I will go over all the details on that. As far as tonight, its by 6 00 p. M. 79 degrees. By 9 00 p. M. Speaking of the shore, nbc 10 Jersey Shore Bureau reporter Ted Greenberg live this afternoon among the crowds in wildwood. I imagine you are surrounded by people, hot dogs and a lot of water ice. Reporter all those things are here plus pizza, french fries, all the things you like to get here on the boardwalk. Thats exactly where i have my feet planted, on the boardwalk. Our camera is here but i want you to take a look out at the beach right by moreys pier Mariners Landing. We have something really cool for the first time on nbc 10. A remote controlled aerial news camera. Lets take a look at the shot from that camera. It is hovering over the beach. Its very close to the ferris wheel at Mariners Landing. You can see the ferris wheel really just a really cool view. We dont usually see, something very unique sweeping views of the boardwalk. You can see part of wildwoods massive beaches there in the background. You can really from this Vantage Point see just how wide wildwoods beaches are. They are extremely wide more than 2,000 feet wide in some spots. It can take a good ten minutes to get from the boardwalk down to the water because the beaches here are so large. In fact, they are the largest beaches on the east coast. I have been watching people riding that ferris wheel throughout the afternoon. Not too many people on it right now but its still early in the day. As more and more people come down here to the jersey shore for the Holiday Weekend, it is going to be filling up along with the beach. Its been a popular place today. Been a really beautiful day, lots of sunshine after the rain we had yesterday. Yesterday was miserable for a lot of people who started their Holiday Weekend early. Today, it has been absolutely gorgeous. We have a nice breeze coming off the ocean. A few clouds but nobody here is complaining. For philadelphia temperatures are at 80 degrees, humidity nice and low at 50 . Across the rest of the region, in the low 70s in the poconos, 79 in trenton, temperatures close to 80 degrees in mt. Holly, 77 in Atlantic City. At 78 in wilmington and 77 in dover. Again, it will be a nice evening out. Satellite radar shot showing us cloudy skies but dry conditions for us. The nearest weather disturbance is off to the southwest and the center of that disturbance is actually going to stay to the south of us but as we get into the weekend we will notice showers starting to ride up closer to our area. Overnight we will start to see a little bit more activity just to the west of our area. If we progress the model a little more by saturday morning at 9 00 a. M. In the poconos, Lehigh Valley to Lancaster County, you could wake up to a few light showers. We will see mostly cloudy conditions to start right at the shore. Closer to noon 1 00 we will keep a close eye to see if these showers start to pop up right near Atlantic City stretching down to cape may and also into parts of sussex county. The latest model is showing the showers will be shortlived and move offshore. By 4 00 5 00 we are still dealing with mostly cloudy skies. At least you can squeeze a few more hours of beach and shore time in. It wont be a total washout tomorrow. We are tracking the possibility of a few showers as we head into the afternoon. Your pocono forecast shows as we head into the weekend tomorrow we will see the chance of showers thats mainly going to be in the morning. Temperatures will warm to 72 degrees so thats still below average for us. With a chance of showers there. On sunday warming things back up mostly sunny skies. Temperatures at 78 degrees. So sunday is really going to be the best day of the entire weekend. We will see a moderate risk for rip currents. Be careful if you are heading down the shore, some of the delaware beaches. For saturday the chance of passing showers, we could see even a quick heavy downpour. 75 degrees, cloudy skies expected from the time you wake up in the morning probably until you take your beach gear inside. On sunday 80 degrees, more sunshine for us on sunday than saturday. Also, our temperatures bump up a little. Good news is the water temperature is nice and mild at 72 degrees and as far as tonights concerned we are going to see mostly cloudy skies with the chance of a few stray showers. 66 degrees for philadelphia 64 for the suburbs to the north and west. As we head into tomorrow, it will actually be a little cooler. The average for this time of year is 87. We are going to be a little below that average. The first measles death in more than a decade has Health Officials sounding the alarm. A young woman in Washington State got the measles back in the spring. She already had other Health Issues and a weakened immune system. Health Officials Say she had been vaccinated as a child but all her medical problems made her vulnerable to the disease. They say theres no apparent risk to others right now but if you are not vaccinated theres a greater chance you can catch the measles. A near miss. Those are the chilling words from a doctor describing what happened to a local man after his heart stopped. Happened during this years blue cross broad street run. She cannot imagine life without him. Not for a second. Reporter but she came dangerously close to finding out. Joe collapsed about two and a half miles into the ten mile blue cross broad street run in early may. His only symptom, some numbness in his legs. I kind of thought of it as like a cramp. Reporter the next thing joe remembers is waking up in an ambulance while an emt explained why. Your heart stopped beating. You got shocked, we brought you back. Reporter luckily for joe, another runner saw him fall a nurse who teaches cpr. She possibly and probably saved my life. Reporter the woman immediately began chest compressions with the help of other racers who stopped. Something joe and lauren who are expecting their second child in november will always be grateful for. That they thought first i need to help somebody rather than i need to continue running. Reporter temple cardiologist josh cooper says hes not sure exactly why joes heart stopped but it wasnt a heart attack. Rather, a problem with the hearts electrical system. Joe now has a defibrillator implanted just under his skin on his side. That will watch his rhythm 24 hours a day and if it ever detects a fast rhythm it will deliver an automatic shock to restore his heart to normal within seconds. Reporter dr. Cooper is working to keep joe safe but says the real heroes are the people who rushed to help. When somebody passes out in public, people need to take action. Reporter call 911, start cpr and in general, begin paying attention to where the portable defibrillators are kept in public places. If god forbid a young athlete or somebody passes out, you know exactly where to go and what to do because every minute is a chance of saving that persons life. The doctor says you should also realize that fainting or losing consciousness can be a sign of a serious condition. Dont take it lightly. See a doctor right away. Can happen to anybody. He looks so young and vibrant. Absolutely. We were there broadcasting the broad street run at the finish line. We saw how difficult it was for many people crossing that finish line.
