This morning in philadelphia folks lined the streets for the areas largest memorial day parade. Nbc 10 just after 10 00 this morning. The parade pays tribute to our Fallen Soldiers and shows support for our military men and women. Ive been born and raised in this neighborhood. Its a wonderful, wonderful tradition. Everybody comes out, enjoys themselves. It gets bigger and better every year. A wreath laying ceremony was held before the parade at the most holy redeemer cemetery. And happening now, a ceremony at the tomb of the unknowns in washington square. Nbc 10s jesse gary is there live. One of several services to honor our nations fallen war heroes. Jim, renee, thats right, and the ceremony has just begun here in washington square. This memorial was first dedicated back in the 50s to president washington and unknown soldiers from the colonial period. It took a little doing, but they actually found remains and they have now put up this memorial here as you see them bringing in the colors. Earlier today, a similar ceremony. This time over at the Korean War Memorial at penns landing. Thats called the forgotten war by many. Those who fought and died remembered today. And for one family, a recent discovery brings closure. For one bucks county family the walk to place a wreath at the Korean War Memorial is the completion of a long journey home. We never knew what happened to him. My father never knew what happened to him. He didnt think he would ever ever know. Now able to rest a little easier. This as the mystery indicateded by the letters m. I. A. Has now been solved. Army Corporal Robert higgins went missing in action during the korean war in 1951. Decades passed. But it wasnt until dna testing last december it positively linked a relative with higgins remains. Its sweet, its sad, too, but its good to have them home now and we know where he is. During this Memorial Day Ceremony, philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter praised the sacrifice of the over 36,000 americans who died in the conflict. Americas always worth fighting for. Most americans dont fully see, dont fully understand the sacrifice made by the 1 who serve in this all volunteer armed forces. Sacrifice the freedoms we take for granted. And the flag flying at the capitol has been lowered to half staff. Today, american soldiers in afghanistan took time to remember our Fallen Soldiers. A wreath laying ceremony at a base in kabul honored those who were killed in afghanistan. We honor the fallen. We remember the over 2,300 american soldiers sailors, airmen and marines who have been killed in action during the last 14 years. And this year, memorial day represents a new chapter in the mission in afghanistan. Most soldiers have left. Those remaining are no longer in a combat role. But supporting assisting and advising the Afghan Security forces. No doubt about it Mother Nature came through this memorial day weekend. An elderly man was saved just moments before a raging river swallowed his suv. But in oklahoma, a heartbreaking loss. Captain jason farley a veteran firefighter drown while trying to rescue people trapped by the flood waters. He was a very good man. Late sunday tornado warnings were issued for parts of kansas missouri, iowa and illinois. Back in texas, the Damage Assessment is just beginning. This small resort wiped out. When you walk down here you can tell its going to take months to fix a lot of this stuff. Residents here say that some of this damage looks more like a tornado than a flood. The fbi is looking to several threats claiming chemical weapons were onboard airplanes this morning, including this air France Flight in new york. The threats are not considered credible. Two fighter jets escorted this plane to jfk to be on the safe side, agents searched the plane and found nothing threatening. In japan, there are no reports of injuries or major damage after a 5. 6 magnitude earthquake. Trains stopped for about ten minutes while crews inspected the tracks. Service back up and running. Therest no threat of a tsunami. But the area could feel some aftershocks over the next week. Japan is one of the worlds most earthquake prone nations. Now to nepal where hundreds of people came together today to mark the onemonth anniversary of a deadly quake there. Warm temperatures stay around also. So the overnight hours will be on the warm side. Many areas staying in the 70s once the sun goes down. Then we have a possible heat wave in the forecast. Temperatures could be borderline. But if we do hit 90 degrees three days in a row, which could happen that would be our first heat wave. Otherwise, thunderstorms turn back into the forecast for several days. And it does, so far, to carry into the weekend. Cape may, beautiful view here. Im sure a lot of people at least, enjoying this last day out there on the beach. In cape may right now, plenty of sunshine, sunny skies, temperature 82 degrees, humidity not bad at all, but the winds are still gusting near about 23 miles an hour along the shore. Farther inland, 87 allentown, 86 redding, 82 west chester. 86 degrees ben salem and philadelphia. 83 degrees in dover. But stone harbor right on the water coming in at 69 degrees. Now, the water temperature still near 60. So its still cool enough to give the immediate coastal areas a bit of a cooler temperature. Future weather here though keeps us nice and dry tonight. Tomorrow, though were going to stay mostly dry. But there is a chance we could see thunderstorms through the Lehigh Valley up into the poconos. Thats mostly going to be tomorrow afternoon. I think thats going to be the best chance. The rest of the area should be sunny and hot. Then we go into wednesday, little more cloud cover through the day, still a hot day. And by later in the day, wednesday, the same area the same setup areas north and west of philadelphia. Wednesday afternoon, and evening, could see the best chance of some thunderstorms. Then by thursday i think the coverage is going to be a little more widespread. So thursday another hot day with more widespread showers and storms around. So the rain is actually going to be returning into the forecast and sticking around for a little while.
