Everyone wanting to know why that train accelerated so quickly just before it hit the curve. The lawyer for amtrak engineer bostian says investigators hope they can fill in the blanks to what happened. Why did the train speed up so rapidly before going into the curve . And why did bostian deploy the emergency brakes when he did . Sources tell me he gave blood and urine for testing and thats standard. And the District Attorneys Office wants to search through his cell phone records. His attorney has publicly claimed the cell phone was off as amtrak requires. Sources tell me the ntsb is also looking at internet posts that bostian rote v wrote, talking about rail safety. I did ask the ntsb about additional video, perhaps from on board the train. They tell us they are in the process of looking at all Surveillance Video from around the area trying to figure out why this train derailed killing eight people. Again, that briefing set to come up in less than a half hour and we will bring it to you as it happens. Deanna durante, nbc 10 news. And the first funeral was held today. U. S. Naval Academy MidshipmanJustin Zemser was laid to rest. Members of the academy gathered with friend and family on long island to say goodbye. He was traveling from annapolis to his home in new york when he was killed tuesday. He was a member of the Navy Sprint Football team, the Jewish Midshipmen Club and the semper fi society. Today his fellow midshipmen at the academy lowered the flag to honor him. His funeral included full military honors. His commander officer called him a phenomenal young man. His fellow cadets agreed. Very humble very passionate young man. Its really all i can say about him. He was great. Nothing is overinflated that you hear about him. There will be a private Memorial Service at the academy on sunday. Zemser was one of eight people who died in the derailment. The eighth was a man from italy who was in the United States on business. Some of the injured are still in the hospital. Temple is treating nine victims, five in critical condition. Five patients remain at Jefferson University hospital and six are at hahnemann. Torresdale has two critical patients. Amtraks plan to get rail service up and running next week may not happen on schedule. Nbc 10 newss drew smith is back in Port Richmond for us. Amtrak workers were on the job before the sun came up installing brandnew railroad tracks. They have to replace about two dozen panels. The wrecked railcars are gone but a pack of heavy equipment is still here. Cement trucks, excavators and electric repair units. Ive been here 45 years. Never experienced anything like this in my life. Reporter the clock is ticking as passenger who is rely on this busy corridor hope to be back on board next week. You can see crews putting power poles back into place this morning. They have new tracks down and everything. Theyve been doing an excellent job back there. Reporter there is so much activity, nearby businesses barely have room to move. Peter loads tankers right next to the crash site. The company did not have to take any extraordinary measures to keep operations going. They offered assistance to amtrak. Neighbors are still mourning the loss of life and look forward to normalcy returning. I had a hard time accepting as truth what i was seeing with my eyes. The scale and the damage to the to one particular car was practically unrecognizable. Officer steffen said its very chaotic. I mean it was like the scene of a movie. When we first got there, one of the commanderings mentioned to our group if you had military service you may be used to seeing something along these lines, if not, you better steady yourself. When i picked up the phone was controlled chaos. Thats basically what i heard. Reporter First Responders described an unsettling and unstable scene. Regardless, Police Officers firemen, and Emergency Personnel rushed in doing the job theyve been trained to do. Nothing prepares you for what you see that night, and when we turned the corner i turned the corner and what i saw, just the heroic act, the selfless acts being committed by police firemen, putting themselves in meeld danger. Reporter responders also leaned on help from fema k9 search specialists like wyatt, who help find human remains. They do their job, ensuring that everybody that was on the manifest went home. K9 specialists say it takes hundreds of hours to train their dogs. As for dispatchers, they say the first rescuer made it to the crash site within minutes of that first phone call. I wouldnt want to know that he was touching my food. Reporter barbara wisenback just wrapped up lunch at the Iron Hill Brewery at the town center, this as the Camden CountyHealth Department is confirming an employee of the restaurant recently tested positive for hepatitisa. That employee were told is a food server and didnt have direct access to preparing the food. He went to the hospital last weekend but told doctors he never felt sick at work. Reporter the owner says they have an impeccable sanitation record and are following with the local board of health and also says they never had to shut down the restaurant as a result of this scare. A mysterious odor forces workers out of a Postal Center in Hamilton Township mercer county, about a dozen workers smelled Something Sweet like syrup, then became sick and diz s. One person fainted for a short time. Everyone went outside while crews checked for hazardous chemicals. Everyone who felt ill was treated at the scene. This is not a center where customers go. All biologicals have been ruled out at this point, and we have not seen any evidence of any spills any powders, no liquid residue or anything like that. Police believe shelton may have left wiggins body in hopewell township. Theyre asking anyone who saw a blew porsche 911, or gold ford escape parked on the side of the road back on october 17th or 18th to contact them. In Lehigh County a bethlehem coach is free on bond after facing a judge on charges he sexually assaulted a student. Adam bednarik is facing several charges including statutory Sexual Assault an alleged incident involving a 15yearold Freedom High School student. The judge today ordered bednarik to have no contact with the victim, is the victims family or any witnesses, and was told to have no contact with anyone under 18 years old. Bednarik coached Girls Basketball at east Mills Middle School where he met the alleged victim when she was a student. He also worked as a teach ears aide at liberty high school. His Attorney Says hes a respected member of the community. Has distinguished himself as a good citizen all the years hes made his friends, his relatives, and the community proud. New developments in the case of a North Hampton county man sent to jail for letting his teenage girls teeth rot. The biggest organizational crime unit has been busted. 38 members of the Group Calling itself the sixth Ward Organization are charged with robbery, theft fraud, and more. 28 of the suspects were rounded up this morning. Reporter once in trenton, more tickets, this time on new Jersey Transit to new york total cost 15 for for a oneway ticket. Then another long ride about an hour and a half to get to new york. This couple says its been a long and at times confusing journey. Six hours. We could have gone to l. A. Reporter okay. Weve reached penn station in new york around 2 48 in afternoon, almost four hours after we left 30th street station. Total cost for one ticket about 25.
