Right now, the orioles are playing the white sox without a single fan there. This is a first for major league baseball. Obviously the safety of the players and, you know the fans for that matter. The riots also forced the orioles to postpone two straight home games, which they will make up at the end of may. And bullets flew last night in a city thats seen its share of violence. Dozens of people in ferguson missouri, were demonstrating in support of the baltimore protesters when someone fired several shots. The gunfire hit three people they are expected to be okay. Riots erupted in ferguson last summer after white Police Officers shot and killed michael brown, an unarmed black teenager. Today, mayors from across the country are meeting in philadelphia. Theyre talking about ways to reduce violence involving africanamerican boys and young men across the nation. Nbc 10s drew smith talked to some of them. And they have a strategy . Jim thats right. Theyre trying to make a point with the number 14. Thats the number they say of young boys and men who are gunned down in americas streets every day. Now, they have 14 strategies to try to stop that violence. Mayors police and nonprofit leaders are in philadelphia for the second ever meeting of cities united. Jamar hall is a local student. He says in 2015 its unacceptable for homicide to be the leading cause of death for black men and boys age 10 to 24. We just really listened to our youth more. Really hear what they have to say. The timing of this conference is adding another layer of urgency as the rioting in baltimore is fresh in everyones mind. Its not just baltimore. Its really trying to address those underlying issues. The mayor says big problems are many people feel left out by the economic political and Education Systems and overrepresented in the criminal justice system. Mayors have to take leadership because we are so close to it. Organizers say when mayors make it clear to their people that everybody matters and follow that up by dedicating resources, it will make a difference. Were really going to do something to change the conditions that our young people are growing up in. Mayor nutter says he wants these leaders to take an action plan back to their city. He says failure on this issue has too high a price, and what we saw in baltimore is an example of that. Unfortunately, we saw some of the aftermath of what some of what could go wrong when these people dont see a future for themselves. There are 12 visiting mayors from other cities big cities here in philadelphia. There are also 300 other city leaders from other smaller cities around the country. Now, brandon tate browns mother is suing the city. Tonya brown dickinson told nbc 10 news today in center city her sons rights were violated when he was shot. She says shes suing to bring about reform in the Police Department. Police shot and killed brendan tatebrown last december after pulling him over during a traffic stop. According to the mother and her lawyer Surveillance Video from the scene shows tatebrown running from his car when he was shot. Philadelphia Police Department has not released the video to the public, which the lawsuit is demanding. But District Attorney Seth Williams shows tatebrown did not follow officers orders. Williams says the man was reaching for a gun inside the car when police shot him. Tatebrowns mother is suing for wrongful death. Because i do believe my son got unnecessarily and while driving while black. The Philadelphia Police Department Tells us it cannot comment on pending litigation. The elderly Chester County man died in filthy conditions. Investigators accuse Edward Obrien iii of taking his father out of a care facility even though the father needed around the clock medical attention. They say the son failed to provide proper care for his father. And thats not all. Nbc 10s doug shimell talked to investigators today. Reporter well the Police Affidavit said he weighed 187 pounds when he was moved into his sons town home in 2011. And also says he was eligible for medical care at a v. A. Facility. Care police say he never got. The neighbors on holly view lane knew that ed obrien iii was taking care of his 92yearold father. They werent together very often. I only got to see his dad a few times. But i know he would speak about him and how he was doing when wed kind of pass. Reporter but when he died in 2013, police and paramedics were horrified by his condition. This army veteran, now weighed about 130 pounds. He was covered with bed sores he was covered with human waste. He had died from neglect. Prosecutors say the son was told by doctors in new jersey where the father had lived he would need medication and 24 7 medical care after a fall. The sons response was not to go out and get medical care. The sons response was to take his father out of new jersey where he knew he was under scrutiny. And in an upstairs bedroom, for two years, investigators say the world war ii veteran was left to rot. This is a case about a life lived with honor, but a death that had no dignity in it. Reporter the defense attorney tells nbc 10 in an email that his clients father did not want to die in a nursing home and declined medical care. And that his client cared for his father until he died of Natural Causes in 2013. A preliminary hearing is set for may 11th. In Chester County, nbc 10 news. Nbc 10 Delaware Bureau reporter tim furlong is live now in wilmington. Tim, you talked to one woman who cradled the victim in her arms as she was dying. I did. It was the victims cousin. And that woman shot now, now wilmingtons 11th murder victim of the year. Today, her familys outraged obviously at the person that fired the shots. Also opening questioning the leaders in the city charged with making this place safer. It happened quickly last night. Yeah. Two women shot as they sat outside with their kids. One woman would be okay. Brown, though she died not long after falling into her cousins arms. Tried to get her to grab my hand, squeeze my hand try to get a response in some type of way, putting pressure on the wound. As police swarmed the scene, couple hundred people poured out, nobody calls it a riot but some say it was hard for police and paramedics to get to her. She now leaves behind two little boys and a family who wants to know who did this to their family and why. They believe it was random and she was fired by stray bullets fired from down the block. Also be wary of charity messages posted on social media. Supporters of convicted cop killer abujamal say the state is slowly executing him through medical neglect. They gathered in harrisburg today. They want state prison officials to give abujamal visitation rights and specialized medical care. His wife says she visited him in prison last friday but claims he was too weak to stand and that his entire body was covered in open sores and a severe skin rash. He was hospitalized last month for complications from undiagnosed diabetes. Abujamal is serving a life sentence for the killing of Daniel Faulkner in 1981. Yesterday, a federal judge tossed out a mental anguish state law aimed at usabujamal after he recorded a commencement address for a Vermont College last year. Less than three weeks to go now before philadelphias democratic primary for mayor. Five of the Democratic Candidates attended a Breakfast Forum in center city this morning. The road reopened to traffic today. A tractortrailer carrying cosmetic powder and a tanker truck burst into flames when they collided on monday morning in lower providence township. The driver of the tanker jeffers died on impact. A 15yearold camden boy is facing murder charges this afternoon for the shooting death of an 18yearold outside of a party easter sunday. Prosecutors say the young suspect surrendered yesterday. He and a 17yearold boy allegedly shot bright several times in the parking lot of a business. The suspects are also charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting two teenage girls. Police want to put a stop to this mans tagging. The issue, whether the cape may Fire Department is understaffed. Jersey shore Bureau Reporter Ted Greenberg tells us anxiety is growing as we get closer to the busy Summer Season. It raises concerns for their ability to respond. John cook depends on cape mays Fire Department to protect the motel he manages. But he says a lack of manpower is on his mind as the victorian resort gears up for the busy Summer Season and a population explosion. If you keep the same Staffing Levels when you have 4,000 as when you have 40,000, i think youre increasing your risk. If we arrive on scene and we cant help were not much good. For the past several years, the city has had four fulltime paid firefighters per shift. If half go out on an ambulance call, there are times when only two are left on standby at the fire house. Could those two firefighters adequately fight a fire . Not the two of them, no. Were way below what we need to. The fire chief says the issue has become a crisis now because of a dwindling number of volunteer firefighters. Just three are qualified. The departments lowest number in years. Some temporary firefighters with limited hours are brought in during the Summer Season. But hiring more fulltimers isnt an option, he says because theres no money in the budget for that. Hoping the money can be allocated somehow to, you know, at least start the process. City Officials Say that couldnt happen until next years budget. But the possibility will be explored. Were in the process of making a review. Part of that will be to see how the other paid departments in Cape May County how theyre staffing. Theyre the best committed group of firemen that a city could have. But they can only do so much. City officials tell me they might also consider keeping those temporary firefighters into the fall. Reporter and jacqueline, i just hung up with the hospital in atlantic city. We know that 32 of the 80 employees who work here were exposed to that strong odor just before lunchtime today. And eight of them i can tell you, were, in fact, rushed to area hospitals. County hazmat teams say the chemical to blame ise r22, used in airconditioning and cooling systems, but the mystery is where exactly is the leak coming from . Sky force 10 high above the parking lot as ten ambulances were in the waiting for a handful of patients on stretchers ultimately transporting sick workers to area hospitals. Two more the more serious patients were airlifted with breathing difficulties to Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center by helicopter. It was a feeling of nausea respiratory irritation and the two major ones that caused the concern was the respiratory Burning Sensation they had in the lungs and throat. At 11 40 this morning, Hammonton Police responded to Home Solutions infusion therapy, a medical company with reports of the extreme and foul odor. Police contacted county hazmat crews who evacuated the business of 80 employees. In all, 32 workers reported feeling sick. The rest sent home for the day.
