A noreaster brought flooding and high winds to the jersey shore just as nbc 10 first alert weather predicted. Nbc 10 news in wildwood Cape May County earlier today. Some areas are seeing even higher water levels. Nbc 10 bureau shore reporter Ted Greenberg is live in long beach township. Ted, have the floodwaters rec e receded where you are . Reporter the flooding is slowly receding, but ill tell you what, it has had a really tough time going down. This is 82nd street here in long beach township. Still plenty of water. Same story out on long beach boulevard are, the main drag. That car there, it got stuck right on long beach boulevard. The result of driving lieu deep water. And today, there has been no shortage of that. The raging bay could not be contained. As it surged into streets on long beach island. Linda riley found herself stuck in the house after flooding from the noreaster left her street waterlogged. I dont want to drive through it. I dont want to move my car. Reporter some took their chances by driving through the saltwater that submerged blocks of long beach boulevard before high tide. It came this quiin quick. Reporter prompting police to post detours on a normally busy road. Probably got a foot in there already. Reporter in longport, massive ocean waves crashed on to the street fueled by wind gusts that stopped 55 miles an hour along the jersey coast. Pretty amazing. Pretty high water. [ sirens ] reporter when the flood sirens sounded in West Wildwood this morning, the water was already on the rise. And creeping closer to franks car which was in desperate need of a jump. Just trying to get it out of here before. We hope the water dont get this high. Reporter lynn cainda riley ont wait for the water to disappear on a day requiring a boat load of patience. It will go down. You just have to wait until the tide goes down. Reporter now, because there is still so much water in the back bays this afternoon, water levels will remain elevated for tonights high tide. However, moderate flooding like we saw earlier today is not expected again. Live in long beach township, Ted Greenberg, nbc 10 news. Glenn hurricane schwartz is closely watching from the weather center. Many factors involved in this flooding. We had the position of being near the full moon, we had the on shore winds and we also had very heavy rain at the shore. The radar estimated rainfall just shows this bullseye right over the shore areas with way less down toward philadelphia, up to 4 inches of rain fell in a fairly short amount of time. Then you had on shore winds, hundreds of miles for hour after hour after hour as the noreaster moved up the coast. But now the wind is starting to come out of the north. And eventually the northwest. And that will make a different story. That will calm the ocean town. Thats why ted is talking about not having the type of flooding tomorrow morning that we had this morning. So the tides oon with the offshore wind in delaware, 9 00, 10 00, cape may around 10 00 tonight. And Atlantic City about 9 30, barn gat about 1 30 in the morning. Nowhere near the type of flooding that we had this morning largely because the wind direction has changed. Now to Sheena Parveen who is tracking snow for some areas tonight. Yes, thats right. So the noreaster isnt over yet. The worst of it for the shore has passed. Still flooding there but we are watching it as it races to the northeast slowly. I shouldnt say races, but at least the heaviest rain has moved out. The cold air lies up mort. And the cold air will move into our area, so on the back side of this noreaster, we do expect rain changing over to snow. Take a look at put weather, mainly areas north and west of philadelphia. So right now were above freezing. So were seeing rain. As we go through midnight hours into early tomorrow morning, this is when temperatures will get colder, closer to freezing. By 7 00, we should be seeing snow falling in these areas. Accumulation will be a little hard to get with temperatures through the day going a little above freezing. So we do expect that around noon even through the afternoon, temperatures staying just above freezing through the day. So again, any accumulation would be a little harder and also on grassy surfaces, a little harder to accumulate. But we will certainly see that snow falling. Could even reach the philadelphia area, so coming up, glenn will talk more about that snowfall for tomorrow and how much you can possibly expect. Thats straight ahead. Doug shimell is leave in Lehigh Valley. And youve seen snow and ice in your travels today . Wr bt. Reporter exactly. And thats what has made it vexing for penndot and the drivers on the roads. They knew without the sign on the side of i476 in Lehigh County telling. A noreaster that put a coating of ice on anything that would stay long enough. When you hear noreaster, coming up the coast, Higher Elevations which is us will get socked. Reporter it means snow and sleet that turns to rain and then maybe back to sleet and snow. I would say i prefer the snow over this. It makes it up predictable and a little bit harder to drive. Reporter dispatchers in the poconos and Lehigh Valley saying there were accident as the noreaster went from froe 1ezen unfrozen. I get in the house and i stay there. Reporter and a number of folks said that maybe their strategy going through the overnight hours and in to tomorrow morning until they see just what is left of this noreaster that moves in with those cold temperatures. Live in Lehigh Valley, doug shimell, nbc 10 news. So the roads are wet. Katity zachary monitoring the hundreds of highway cameras. Any big trouble spots . Im seeing a lot of wet roads and there are some accidents on local roads. But i want to draw your to some of the flooding. First a live look at the 42, taillights are southbound. Volume is building. And get used to it, well have a lot of wind tonight and tomorrow and the day after that and the day after. 16 gusting to 22 miles an hour right now. Our peak wind gusts in it the area today, 56 miles an hour. 45 degrees feels like 38. And you can see its well above freezing north and west. Even poconos, 36 degrees. So there is no threat of any kind of icing over the next several hours or even a changeover to snow being imminent. Its going to take some time. These things are gradual. Northwest winds are generally a drier wind, but in a strong noreaster like this, the moisture can come right around the back end of it and thats what we expect. Sustained winds 10 to 15 miles an hour. Clearly this heaviest rain went right over long island and into new england. Glazed the jersey shore. We did not get nearly as much in delaware or the philadelphia area and other parts of southeastern pennsylvania, but we continue to see bands of rain moving north to south. Were nowhere near drying out overall with this, although the precipitation is pretty much on the light side. Whats going to happen as we go through the night tonight, there is the changeover to snow. But we dont go until tomorrow night with the temperatures dropping below freezing. So during the day tomorrow, could be snowing in this area, but the temperature should be well above freezing and unless the snow is coming down real hard, its not going to be sticking in most places. And how much snow . At least one of our computer models here shows at least some perhaps toward the philadelphia area, but as far as accumulation, not much because so much of it is melting. An inch in allentown, 3 inches more in the poconos. Again, thats just from one particular computer model. Well continue to update this because we keep getting new information. This is a tricky forecast on the back he said of these slow moving nor hes terse. We have rain, windy, cold. The rain changing to snow north and west late tonight. Temperatures generally staying above freezing and generally any snow tending to melt. The rain changing to snow across a good bit of the area tomorrow even down toward the philadelphia region. Temperatures above the freezing mark for the most part. Wind gusts up to 35 miles an hour. Then tomorrow after sunset, the temperatures start going down and we could get issues with slippery roads. Tomorrow a high of only 39. Even a little colder on thursday. Still with wind. And snow showers. Certainly cold enough to snow just about anywhere. Friday, another cold day. But at least the wind is diminished. Saturday is cold, as well. Sunday, not quite as cold, but dry. A dry eweekend and the eagles game looks dry, as well. Milder weather doesnt come until early next week. Driver, listen up. Coming up, a major auto company telling you to pull your car off the road before it catches fire. And then a warning to all parents. A crib just recall that had could strangle your child. The woman first in history to die in the line of tut. That is our on that story. Joyce craig lewis died battling a fire in the basement of a row home overnight. Quieter picture now as we look live at the scene in cape may. Its a slow moving storm. Still has some punch to it, though. Areas north and west of philadelphia could see some snow before its all over as we look live right here at Camel Back Mountain resort. So lets talk more about the snow let. Glenn hurricane schwartz is back. And glenn, who can expect the snowfall . Aside from the poconos as you just mentioned, areas farther to the north and west, Lehigh Valley, berks county, maybe even the upper elevations of chester county. But the coast got almost all of the rain. Its like a wall set up here. Noreaster didnt develop quite as quickly enough to spread the rain back to the west. Just to give you an example, about 4 inches of rain near millville and a half inch of rain just sort of philadelphia. So just an incredible difference here across just a few miles. Right now, were seeing rain, not snow, across our area. But the snow area is not that far away. Colder air will start to spin done overnight tonight. And a lot of this green will turn white as we head toward day break tomorrow and during the day tomorrow. In the meantime, this is a lot of light rain. We had the on shore winds for hour after hour, that led to all that coastal flooding this morning. And now that the storm is moving away, the northwest winds have come in and that will start to dry us out. But it also will start to bring the rain over to snow. But the temperature not quite dropping fast enough to have it stick on roads. Here we are 9 00 tonight, and then by 11 00 tonight, still well above the freezing mark. Well go hour by hour as we go into tomorrow. More on the snow threat with the 7 day in just a few minutes. Lets see what independent could have impact the wet weather is having on traffic.
