A Montgomery County jury is about to decide life or death for the man convicted of double murder in the death of an infant and her grandmother. Nbc 10s Deanna Durante has been keeping close tabs on this case at the courthouse inc norristo. Deanna, tell us whats happening right now. Reporter the jury is receiving instructions. The closing arguments happened within the last couple of minutes. The judge now is explaining the law to them. They can then deliberate whether Raghunandan Yandamuri can be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or the Death Penalty. These are some of the final statements that the jury just heard, that it was a horrible plan that went wrong. And that this is someone who should be punished severely and it was the lamest expression of remorse you will ever hear. Those quotes not from the prosecution but from the defense attorney, the man who told the jury a few minutes ago his job is to be fighting for the life of Raghunandan Yandamuri. A man that the jury has already convicted of two murders, murders of a 10monthold baby and her 61yearold grandmother. Now, in his closing, assistant District Attorney, First Assistant District Attorney kevin steele says its time for justice. Justice would be served by the jury finding death sentences for both cases. For both first degree murder cases. Now, the defense is citing mitigating circumstances saying that yandamuris Mental Health should be taken into account here. His gambling habits are all reasons why the jury should sentence him to life without parole. Part of argument is going to be clearly hes intelligent but there are plenty of intelligent people in life who have mental illnesses. Our argument basically is hes a mentally impaired person, significantly so, and that is mitigating, thats mitigating evidence and our argument that because of that mitigating evidence, a sentence of life without parole is appropriate and well see what the jury decides. Now, prosecutors say that the aggravating circumstances here, aggravating circumstances that are designed by the state legislature should be given more weight, the fact that one of the victims is a child below 12 years old, saanvi venna, the 10monthold. Its all up for the jury to decide which side has more weight, the aggravators or the mitigating circumstances. That jury should be getting the case within the next half hour. Reporting live in norristown, Deanna Durante, nbc 10 news. On friday, prosecutors had victims give impact statements. Can the jury use those statements to make their Death Penalty decisions . They certainly can use those statements to put weight on the aggravating circumstances but as the defense told them that is not evidence in the case. That that is not in itself an aggravator. They were horrible statements to hear, they were painful, everyone in the courtroom has a mother, a grandmother. Many people on the jury have children, so they can understand how painful of lives are of those victims knowing that the 61yearold grandmother and their 10monthold baby are no longer here but that is not considered evidence in the case.
