The kids have been found safe in indiana but their mother keshia hamilton remains missing. Mitch blocker shows us when people disappear in the Delaware Valley theres less than a 50 50 chance they will be found at all. These are the faces of the missing. There are hundreds of open cases in the Delaware Valley. The list grows nearly every day. The only way i can describe the feeling is angst. It is just pure angst. Reporter carol spent 19 years wondering what happened to her exhusband. How old was your daughter when he disappeared. 2 1 2. By the time Todd Martin Smith was found his daughter was 21. It wasnt until 19 years later, that we discovered that the entire time he had been a john doe in the state of florida. Reporter smith was one of thousands of missing people who remained unidentified for years in the u. S. His family learned he died snorkeling caught in a rip current. We were fortunate that even though it took 19 years we had an answer. Reporter the nbc 10 investigators discovered hundreds of Delaware Valley families have very few witness answer as, according to the National Missing and unidentified persons system or namis there are more than 500 unsolved cases in pennsylvania new jersey and delaware. Namus is a Clearing House for people funded by the department of justice. Police across the country enter their missing persons cases and information is made public. But those who collect these numbers say theres a lag and that there are likely far more missing people in the u. S. Than listed in this database. It is a silent disast aer. Many people have not an idea of the number of people missing. Reporter dr. Richard scanlin is namus representative. Is this a failure of Law Enforcement to have so many missing persons cases still open . I dont see it as a failure but an area they are vastly overwhelmed by the requirements of the case. in pennsylvania 59 of those reported missing are still missing. In new jersey it is 53 . In delaware where there have been 71 missing persons cases, 79 are unsolved. It is an overloaded system. This has built up slowly over many years of time. We are working cases constantly. Inside the forensic anthrolpology lab, donna is tasked with solving the cases. She can determine, race age or sex of the unit fighting based on the skull alone. There are 32 adult teeth, every one of the bones can give us information. There are all clues. All clues. Reporter con and the. Reporter she said sometimes they are mismarked or never found. There are things that didnt add up. Scar information, eye color, age. Reporter smith was i. D. Through his dental records. There are more people who need answers and as long as they have questions there is no closure. The fbi maintains another plelg o missing persons database that is only available to Law Enforcement. It is believed to be more up to date. To get a picture of the missing people in the United States and the problem that comes from it the namus and fbi databases need to be looked at. New at 11 00, a happy reunion for a local dog owner after their beloved pet disappeared after a bizarre crime spree. A 4yearold dachshund back in his owners arms. They say they found their dog earlier today but got hightech help from a local rescue organization. After receiving several reports from people saying they seen ollie in the neighborhood they set up a trap and aimed a motion detection camera at the device and sure enough it worked. The son came up and he came back. It was clear he was eating the food and the camera went from infrared to color so we could see what with was going on. We are very thankful to everyone whos helped even the people who are making comments saying they are praying and thinking of him. Ollie is a few pounds lighter and has a cut on the leg but otherwise okay. Police say a man grabbed the dog during a break in at the couples apartment. Investigators say he swiped the dog who from the whom who found inappropriately touching himself on the balcony. He is charged with burglary assault and other offenses. Police are investigating the shootings of seven people. Three of those victims were killed last night in the homesburg section of the city. A woman found them dead inside of a home on vista street. One of the victims was her boyfriend. Police have not yet given a possible motive for the crime can. Another deadly shooting is under investigation in the brewery town section. Police say someone shot the 21yearold victim in the head on hollywood street. His name has not yet been released. Three people were also wounded in a shooting in the nicetown section of philadelphia. Is when we will see the best chance of sleet and freezing rain where our surface temperatures are at freezing. His investigation took him to the front lines of those working to change that. Reporter Donna Fontana is as much detective as scientist. There are 206 bones in the adult body and 32 adult teeth. Every one of those can give us information. Reporter they are all clues . They are all clues. Reporter inside the police lab, fontana diagrams measures and documents according to the National Missing and unidentified persons system or namus, 53 of those who disappeared in new jersey have not been found. This is ground zero for trying to find out what happened to them. We will do dna on unidentified. We will do dental xrays body xrays on an unidentified. We will take fingerprints look for tatoos or scars. She showed us this skull that is the only piece of evidence in a cold case. I notice there are not fillings. That is unique also. Reporter it is those features that fontana hopes helps to solve the 205 remaining open missing persons cases. Why is it so hard to find someone whos missing . Biggest reason is the black lack of what we call quality biometric data. Reporter such as fingerprints dental records are the holy grail. The group documents missing and unidentified persons cases throughout the United States. The chance of someone who is missing 30 to 60 day diminishes and the chance of them alive is low. Reporter she can determine the race age or sex of the unidentified if the bodies a a prosthesis she can track it to the hospital that performed the surgery. If she has a skull she can create a model like this recreating what the person likely looked like. You have a case that has basically gone cold. It is lastditch effort doing reconstruction. Reporter the reconstruction takes more than 18 hours. It is clay layered over the skull. The more evidence the more accurate the reconstruction. She said ultimately it is not the guess work that solves the cases but the real science like dental and medical records. Families need to record that information. You keep that information at hand just like they would a photograph of their child. Namus claims roughly 10 of missing persons cases involved people who wanted to disappear. 90 represents 80,000 missing across the United States that includes the remains of 45,000 unidentified people.
