This morning, right now, the philadelphia skyline looks a little bit different. The pnb letters atop an Historic Building on south broad street, 1 south broad street, have been removed. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live in center city where the work was very fast this second time around. Those letters had been up there for half a century. Reporter thats right, rosemary, and now they are down. Those letters are history at this point. Ive been talking with some of the workers out here. One of the workers in charge of this project tells me that they did a lot of things differently. I was asking what did they do this time around that made these letters come off so easily . You might remember back in august, it took quite a while just to get three of the letters down, but here it took them about 45 minutes to get nine letters, those remaining nine letters off of this building. So what im told is that they had the letters down to the bolts by early this morning. They were pretty much tethered together. And then at that point when the helicopter came in, they just cut that support and the helicopter was able to take those letters and bring them down. Well go ahead and show you some video. This is what it looked like earlier this morning, about 7 30 when that helicopter came in to start this work. They lowered the letters one by one, down to the ground, right in front of city hall. The 3,000pound letters were considered a safety hazard since they had been up there on the building for six decades. Back in august, as i mentioned, the first attempt was made to remove these letters, but only three came down instead of all 12, and that was because workers had underestimated how fragile they really were at the time. A little bit of history here, the pnb stands for Philadelphia National bank. That company is no more, but for years, these letters stood as a symbol of phillys past. And some tell me it is bittersweet, but this was pretty cool to watch. Amazing to see a helicopter come that close up on me. And down low like that. Reporter not something youd see every day. Yeah. Never seen nothing like that before. I was amazed. I had friends who were supposed to meet me here and they totally missed it because last time we were here we were here for three hours and saw them take down two letters. Reporter and weve been seeing the workers load the letters on to flat bed trucks. You see that right now as well come back live. Theyve got three of these flat beds out here right now. Three letters on each truck and theyre getting ready to move them out of center city once and for all. At the moment, the workers are cutting their supports that are remaining on these letters to make them a little bit easier for transport. As youre looking live, traffic is still tied up quite a bit. Around this area, but if youre looking right here at 15th and jfk, that is still shut down. Right by broad street, some of that area is still shut down. So theyre starting to gradually get this area reopened as they can get the work done. But that could still take a little while longer. But their original estimate was that it would take until about 4 00 this afternoon to get all of these letters down, to get the roads reopened, but that may expected. Of course, we will keep you posted online on nbc10. Com and on social media to let you know when the roads reopen. Live in center city, im matt delucia, nbc 10 news. Talking sports now.
