Look at that little guy. Look at that little gentleman. During his Senate Testimony today, attorney general Jeff Sessions said that any suggestion he colluded with russia during the election is quote, an appalling and detestable lie. And he blamed it on those golddarn duke boys. [ light laughter ] former House SpeakerNewt Gingrich has published a new book titled understanding trump. And i have to say its a pretty quick read. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] a new poll found that only 37 of voters think President Trump is honest. Or as trump put it. 100 . [ laughter and applause ] seth the white house announced today that President Trump will award his first medal of honor next month. So congratulations in advance, colonel. [ laughter and applause ] few remember how he defeated the chickens. [ light laughter ] the chickens were amassing at our gates. And he killed them. [ light laughter ] and he put them in buckets. Uber ceo [ laughter and applause ] uber Ceo Travis Kalanick announced today that he is taking a leave of absence from the company. But hell be back in three minutes no wait, now hold on, now its saying five minutes. [ laughter ] six, oh, no cancelled . The chickens with their beaks. [ light laughter ] a new survey shows that men are four times more likely than women to take their cell phone out during a wedding or a funeral. While women are more likely to take their cell phone out during an argument. Ill tell you exactly what you said [ laughter and applause ] two passengers on a flight to ibiza over the weekend reportedly had sex while in their seats. And nobody was more upset than the guy in the middle. [ laughter ] and finally, starbucks announced yesterday that it will be teaming up with lady gaga to release a line of summer drinks to wear. [ laughter ] ladies and gentlemen, we have a great show for you tonight [ cheers and applause ] she is starring in a hilarious new film, rough night. She is one of my all time favorites. Kate mckinnon is here, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] also, for my money one of the best shows on tv, fxs atlanta. One of their stars, brian tyree henry, is here tonight. [ cheers and applause ] fantastic actor, lovely guy. Very excited to talk to him. And she is a New York Times bestselling author and her new book, surpassing certainty, is available today. Janet mock, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] so, i promise well talk to all of them, but before we get to that, attorney general Jeff Sessions testified in the senate today as several of President Trumps allies called for firing the special counsel in charge of the russian investigation, robert mueller. For more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth today trump held a meeting at the white house on obamacare. Senators worked secretly behind closed doors to write a bill that could take Health Insurance away from 23 million americans. But as usual, trump seemed less concerned with the substance of the bill and more concerned with himself. Ive been talking about repealing and replacing obamacare now for almost two years. Dont forget on june 16th june 14th is my birthday, but june 16th was the day i announced that i was running. Some people said, really . That going to happen . And it happened. Seth we all said, really . Is that going to happen . [ laughter ] in fact, we all still say that. Every day, when i read the news in the morning, i have one of two reactions really . Is that going to happen . Or i secretly pour whiskey into my mug while no ones looking. [ light laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] thats good water [ light laughter ] also, unless youre seven or younger, stop telling people when your birthday is [ laughter and applause ] june 14th. Thats my birthday. Thats my special day. So hopefully therell be presents of some kind. Because its my day. [ light laughter ] now trump also complained that there are no democrats who support the Gop Health Care bill. But thats because there are no democrats who know whats in the Gop Health Care bill. In fact, republicans are engaged in one of the most breathtakingly cynical acts of governance in modern history. Theyre trying to write and pass a Health Care Bill without telling anyone whats in it. The bill is so unpopular that according to reports, Senate Republicans are working to finish their draft Health Care Bill, but have no plans to publically release it. One senate gop aide said, quote, we arent stupid. [ light laughter ] to paraphrase the dude youre not stupid, youre just an asshole. [ laughter ] of course, amid all of this, there is the ongoing special counsel investigation. It seems like every day the news surrounding the russia scandal and the firing of former fbi director james comey gets more intense and more unbelievable. Its like every time we think were on top of crazy mountain, a cloud blows away and there is another peak to climb. [ light laughter ] and trump, himself, is apparently aware of how bad things look for him right now. Because the white house is demanding Republican House members appear on Cable News Networks to defend president donald trump. A source close to the administration said the white house is demanding members appear on fox, msnbc, and cnn. Adding, the president is obsessing and watching every channel. Thats right. The president is obsessively watching cable news. So at least he has one thing in common with all of us. [ light laughter ] ive watched so much cable news in the last seven months, im pretty sure ive memorized chris hayess blazer rotation. [ laughter ] trumps our first president to spend more time watching the situation room than he does in the actual situation room. [ light laughter ] trump is apparently obsessing, in particular, over the appointment of a special counsel, robert mueller, to oversee the investigation. Mueller, a former fbi director, is highly respected by members of both parties. Hes so widely respected that firing him would seem completely out of the question. Like if theres one thing donald trump could do to make himself look incredibly guilty, its fire the special counsel. And even for trump, that would just be a bridge too far, right . Just hours after leaving the white house, President Trumps longtime friend, newsmax ceo christopher ruddy, claims the president is considering firing special counsel robert mueller, the man in charge of investigating possible collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. I think hes considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. I think hes weighing that option. Seth so trump might fire the man who is investigating him just as that investigation is heating up. Now id say thats too insane even for trump, but then again, this would be the second time hes done that [ light laughter ] now again, this would seem like outlandishly crazy move even for trump. But nothing made me more convinced that he might actually do it than this tweet from a cnn reporter. Source close to trump says the president is being advised by many people not to fire special prosecutor robert mueller. And there is no better way to get trump no do something than to tell him not to do it. He treats political advice like theyre wedding vowels. til death do us part . Well see about that. [ laughter ] of course, as we know, trump already has a history of firing Law Enforcement officials who are supposed to be independent when they challenge his administration. He fired acting attorney general sally yates after she warned the white house about Michael Flynns contacts with russians and refused to enforce his travel ban. And fired u. S. Attorney for the Southern District of new york, preet bharara, after telling him he wanted to stay on. And he fired comey after asking him to end the flynn investigation. I dont know if trump is guilty, but he definitely acts like a person whos guilty. Its like if every time you heard a knock at the door, you immediately yelled, do you have a warrant . [ laughter ] um, you ordered a pizza . On top of all this, there is a growing chorus of trump allies calling for mueller to be fired and becoming increasingly rabid in their rhetoric about the russia investigation. The special counsel Robert Muellers investigation is now turning into a witch hunt. It needs to be shut down immediately. Do we have a conspiracy remaining afoot in the department of justice that is going to be out to destroy this president and theyve got to be fired, if not worse. End the special counsel. End the senate inhouse socalled investigations. And lets get on with draining this swamp of these nasty, nasty creatures. Seth these nasty creatures . Have you seen the dudes on your side . Steve bannon looks like he burst out of someones chest. [ laughter ] so sessionss testimony today could not have come at a more tumultuous time. In fact, many of the decisions sessions made himself have led us to this moment. As you may recall, sessions was forced to recuse himself from the russia investigation after it turned out he had lied to the senate during his confirmation hearing about two separate meetings he had with the russian ambassador, sergei kislyak. Remember, sessions volunteered out of nowhere that he has had no contacts with russian officials. A claim that later turned out to be false. If there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump Campaign communicated with the russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do . Senator franken, im not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and i did not have communications with the russians and im unable to comment on it. Very well. Without divulging sensitive [ laughter ] seth look at that face. Thats the face of a man immediately regretting the words he just said. [ laughter ] thats the same face sessions would make after saying, well, mr. Lebron james, i do believe i could beat you oneonone. And im willing to bet my life savings. [ laughter ] in his testimony today [ cheers and applause ] in his testimony today, sessions tried to explain that answer by claiming that he was confused by frankens question. Senator franken asked me a rambling question after some six hours of testimony. Seth oh, you thought frankens question was rambling. Need i remind you that this is the guy you work for. That speech was hot for about two or three hours after the speech was made, because they came up with other things, having to do with other people, that they shouldnt have been able to do and they shouldnt have done. But they did it. And you know exactly what im talking about. [ laughter ] seth no. No one knows what you are talking about. If sessions thought frankens question was rambling then he must just blackout whenever he talks to trump. [ light laughter ] so sessions was forced to formally recuse himself from the russia investigation. But then last week, comey added to the intrigue when he testified that there was another undisclosed reason why sessions had to recuse himself that he couldnt discuss publicly. And soon after that testimony we found out what it was. Were learning now that in closed session this afternoon, the fired fbi director james comey told senators that the reason he didnt want to sessions any further in Public Session is because of a possible third meeting, a third undisclosed meeting between sessions and russias ambassador to the u. S. , sergei ya seth the information about the third meeting comes from communications between kislyak and the russians, according to the New York Times. The intelligence appears to be based on intercepts of kislyak had with sessions at a Trump Campaign event. And im assuming that intercepted discussion was kislyak saying [ russian accent ] can you believe it . They keep taking meeting with me, even though im obviously shady character. [ laughter ] will you sit down with me . They say, yes. I cant believe this. Now today sessions also angrily denied that there were any secret reasons why he had to recuse himself, despite comeys sworn testimony which later led to a Heated Exchange with senator ron wyden of oregon. I recuse myself from any investigation into the campaign for president , but i did not recuse myself from defending my honor against scurrilous and false allegations. Mr. Comey said that there were matters, with respect to the recusal, that were problematic and he couldnt talk about them. What are they . I that why dont you tell me . There are none, senator wyden. There are none. I can tell you that, for absolute certainty. We can you tell this is a secret innuendo being leaked out there about me and i dont appreciate it. Seth thats right, sessions is defending his honor from scurrilous innuendo. And theres nothing more southern than scurrilous innuendo. [ light laughter ] his sister never got married. She prefers to tender her pussy willows. [ laughter ] [ applause ] one of the most noteworthy exchanges came when sessions declined to answer questions about his conversations with trump, but did not cite executive privilege. Instead, claiming, that he was protecting the president s right to potentially invoke executive privilege in the future, which led to this back and forth with senator Martin Heinrich of new mexico. Has the president ever expressed his frustration to you regarding your decision to recuse yourself . Senator heinrich, im not able to share with this committee, private communications. Because youre invoking executive privilege . Senator, im protecting the president s constitutional right by not giving it away before he has a chance on youre having it both ways. To review it. And secondly, i am telling you the truth in answering your question in saying its a longstanding policy of the department of justice to not comment are those policies written . Even to make sure the president has full opportunity to decide these issues. Can you share those policies with us . Are they written down at the department of justice . I believe they are. Seth wait. You believe theyre written down somewhere . Cmon, mr. Attorney general, do these rules really exist . [ laughter and applause ] thats what i thought. So the president s allies are now going around calling for the special counsel to be fired. And republicans are trying to pass a healthcare bill in secret. Is there any good news out there for trump . June 14th is my birthday. [ laughter ] seth oh, all right. This has been a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] well be right back with Kate Mckinnon, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] [music conversation] [music volume rises] you guys wanna go . Lets take a look. I had this nightmare where we had all killed a guy. That is a reality. We killed someone. What . No oh, my god, jetlag is insane, you guys. Its no joke. No joke. Damn it. [ light laughter ] seth please welcome back to the show, my very good friend, Kate Mckinnon, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] seth whoa that was good. Seth how are you, my dear . Im good, im great. I just i was having some dried mango strips backstage. Seth you were . They were in your your little dressing room. Seth that was something we left for you. Mmhmm. Seth did you enjoy have you been enjoying them . I love them. Theyre like you know when you peel a sunburn . [ light laughter ] seth i am i realize im a big fan of dried mango strips yeah. Seth and now i probably will never eat another one. [ light laughter ] give them to me instead. Seth thats you ran a scam on me. Have them forwarded to my apartment. Seth you ran a scam on me. So this is a film about a Bachelorette Party yeah, yes. Seth that obviously goes bad. Oh, daddy, does it. [ light laughter ] yeah, these five old friends go to miami and they hire a dancer for the party and [ light laughter ] seth like a ballet dancer. Yes. Seth okay. Yes. Its mikhail baryshnikov. [ light laughter ] he comes and theres an accident and he is no longer living after that. And they have to get themselves out of this sticky situation. Seth there you go. Ouch. Miami right . [ light laughter ] every time. Seth you shot now you shot some of this film in the hamptons, which is a lovely place to be. The bulk of it in the hamptons, yeah. Seth a bulk of it in the hamptons. Yes. Seth hamptons for miami. [ light laughter ] and and yet, you had a stuntwoman in this film because you do your character gets injured a fair amount. But you also hurt yourself independent of the film. And the hamptons is not a place known for danger. No, no. But there are hidden dangers lurking. [ light laughter ] there sure are. There was a yes, behind the scenes, we had a little accident. I was jumping up on a ledge to sit next to my colleagues seth your costars. Yes. Seth yeah. And i i went too far. And i rolled backwards into a bramble bush. [ laughter ] seth okay. [ light laughter ] and i was stuck there seth uhhuh. [ applause ] and i said, guys, help me out. And we actually we had to we couldnt shoot for the next hour, because everyone had to pick in pitch in, just like picking little seth how many brambles would you say you managed to get . bout bout 2,500 [ laughter ] brambles. Yeah, yeah. I was velveteen after that. Seth yeah. Yeah, that happened. Seth the you also had a scene with the the actor who played the dancer then had to play a dead dancer. Yes, yes. He was incredible. His name is ryan cooper and man was he dead. [ light laughter ] seth and you guys he was dead on the beach. Yes, yes. Seth and explain your scene with him, because this is oh, yeah, so theres this theres this one part where i were trying to hide the fact that hes dead. And im like on top of him kissing him. And in the sand were i dont know what they were. They were monsters. They were tiny sand monsters. [ light laughter ] they were like the potato bugs of the sand except they jumped and bit. [ light laughter ] and so these little buggers. And it was the middle of the night and it was about forty degrees. And these little buggers just kept jumping and biting. And so he had to lay there in the sand not moving and every once in a while he would just go like [ light laughter ] cause he was getting bit and i was getting bit and i was on top of him kissing him and i was just like, wow, im im in my thirties. [ light laughter ] its forty degrees, im getting bit by monsters and im fake kissing a dead body. [ light laughter ] all right. [ light laughter ] seth the dream. Ill take it. Seth i do know of course youve been on hiatus for, what about a month now . Yes, yes. Seth and is it its hard for me when we just even have a week off with everything going on in the world. I know. Seth do you find is it hard being off when news happens or are you relieved at it . No, its hard. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] theres a party going on and im not there. [ light laughter ] and i know whats going on because i read about it on the internet. [ light laughter ] and i cant comment on it. Seth you youve played so many people in this administration already. Kellyanne, famously yes, yes. Seth and Jeff Sessions. Jeff sessions. Seth do you have a preference of the two . Im going to pick sesh. Seth why do you like sesh . I gotta pick sesh. For me, sesh, theres the joyfulness with which he proceeds seth and by the way, kellyanne was obvious casting. This was less obvious, but [ light laughter ] it began as a joke pitch and then it just sort of happened. Seth there you are with al franken. And what i noticed was seth and there you are with forest gumping with vladamir putin. [ light laughter ] so what did you notice about sesh . Hes got this funny little mouth. Seth uhhuh. And i i could always do this thing with my lip. [ laughter and applause ] and i just id always been seth you know what that looks like to me . Its like thats like grinch mouth. Yeah, yeah. Seth thats like yeah. Well it comes to a point. Seth yeah. Or like a turtles little mouth. Seth yeah. And ive been trying to use it and then he popped up into the world and i thought, oh, my gosh, im going to use it [ laughter and applause ] thats great. I love that. Seth and you actually because you very you very carefully paid attention to his testimony today. And you actually have some Jeff Sessions lines from testimony that youd like to like to i did. Well, i just you know, because were off. Seth yeah. I i couldnt help myself. So i seth so i love that you yeah, please use this as a platform. He did like he was like he would say like, you know, oath. Oath is such a strong word. Now when when i said oath, now i thought i was saying oats in one of those [ light laughter ] one of those lispy barcelona accents, you know. Oath oath [ light laughter ] and now with sergey kislyak, now i i only met him two times. [ light laughter ] three times. Okay, three times. But the third, the third time was in a mens restroom. And we was just talking about what a trial it is to get soap out of the electric soap dispensers. [ light laughter ] and, um, as for jim comey, he asked me to keep trump out of his way, right. And theyre sayin i didnt respond. But the truth is, i didnt hear him. [ laughter ] now, this guys about six foot eight and i had heard a sound above my head. I thought it was a cicada, i went you know . [ laughter ] recuse me. [ laughter and applause ] thank you seth well done. [ cheers and applause ] well done. Thank you for indulging me in that. Seth one last thing. Because obviously you are someone who you you are great, youre a great sketch performer, you get sketches on every week. But there are still even Kate Mckinnon has a sketch that she has not been able to get on snl. Oh, i have my white whales. Seth you have your white whales. Yes. Seth then give me whats a white whale . cause i feel like this is one that you were trying when i was there. Yeah. You know, its what would you its appropriate to bring back a sketch that doesnt work the first time. Seth i would once that year. Seth i would argue twice a year is the max. Maybe the next year once. Seth yeah. And then you gotta let it die. Seth and then you gotta let it go. If it doesnt work three times at read through, its time to let it go. Yeah, yeah. So i have this scottish troll character named colleen. Seth uhhuh. She was a scottish troll and she wanted a kiss. And that was her deal. [ light laughter ] and i did it at the read through table ten times . [ light laughter ] ten times in one year. And it just it didnt work. Seth it didnt work. And i will you, as head writer at the time, Lorne Michaels would say, could someone please tell kate, colleens not happening . [ laughter ] but give us a little colleen. Well i seth wasnt she a tour guide . She was a tour guide, but she was also a troll. But then she was the Prime Minister of scotland. Then she was susan boyle. But then she was a bunch of other things. I tried, seth [ light laughter ] anyways she would she would be about to get a kiss and she would say to herself, colleen, this is it and then it wouldnt happen. [ light laughter ] so, you know, you can sort of see where lorne was coming from. Seth yeah. With that. Seth well, you know, i dont think its something we can do with an active cast member. But, you know, Second Chance theater is an incredibly popular thing here at late night. I think at one point we have to get colleen on her feet. Are you saying theres a chance . Seth theres a chance. [ light laughter ] ill only give up on her after ive left her after ive left snl. [ light laughter ] im holding on hope until then, man. Seth all right. Please hold on hope and keep doing what you do. Kate, its always just the best to see you. Thank you for being here. Thank you, seth. Seth Kate Mckinnon, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] rough night is in theaters friday. Well be right back with brian tyree henry. [ cheers and applause ] well its a perfect nespresso morning here, george. Hold on a second. Mmm. [mel torme sings comin home baby] hey there. Want a lift . Where are we going . No dont tell me. Let me guess. Have a nice ride. How far would you go for coffee thats a cup above . I brought you nespresso. Nespresso. What else . [ cheers and applause ] seth our next guest is a talented actor you know from vice principals and nbcs this is us. He plays paper boi on fxs awardwinning series atlanta. Lets take a look. If you want to start we can do that next year, but right now lets focus on getting paid. Now hold up, man. Make sure you keep an eye on that promoter. I dont trust his kind, man. He gonna try to play us. His kind . Yeah. What is this the hobbit . Were from two different worlds. Hes nigerian, man. I dont trust nigerians. Darius is nigerian. He is . Seth please welcome to the show brian tyree henry, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] seth how are you, brian . Im nervous seth oh, are you . Yes seth you dont have to be nervous. But i brought my Fidget Spinner. Seth oh, good. [ laughter ] good. Finally figured out what theyre for, man. Seth im so glad you have it. This is it. So you finally figured it out. Yeah, you just spin it. Seth do you want to spin it and see if you can spin it just one spin. The duration of the whole seth yeah, lets see okay, lets go. Seth all right, so, now its oh, god, its not gonna work. Seth so, first of all, weve met before. I love this show so much, atlanta. Thank you. Seth for those who dont watch, you play alfred who is his rap name is paper boi. Yes. Seth and you had gone to school in atlanta. Yeah. Seth so this was a bit of homecoming for you. Did you like shooting in atlanta . I loved it. I mean the summers are brutal. Its incredibly hot. And some of the scenes we had to do, i think you know, were on alfreds couch out in the field. And so all the sweat that you see, that i have on me, its mine. [ laughter ] seth so theres no theres no makeup coming over with a spray bottle . No glycerin, no spray bottle, like none of that. It was like i was like, thats method. [ laughter ] its method. Seth and you ive heard you say that atlanta is an anomaly for a southern city. How would you describe atlanta to people who havent spent a lot of time there . You know its really interesting is that its in the south. Its in georgia. Its in the bible belt. But its so turnt all the time. Its so [ light laughter ] like its so great. You know, the food is great. The fashions great. The music scene is amazing. And you know, everything is pretty much black owned and black supported. And you get to see yourself reflected back to you down there. You know . I went to morehouse college. And theres a lot of hbcus down there. But its like the melting pot. Anything that you want or want to be, you can do in atlanta. Seth have you spent time there since the show has come out . Is the city yeah. I actually went back there, oddly enough, to do this movie called family that i actually was in with Kate Mckinnon, which is kind of crazy. I was like, kate never met you, but weve been doing stuff together. Hey but, yeah, i went down there and i was terrified, because i had not been back down there since atlanta and man, oh, man seth people like it . Theres love. Theres so much love. Seth oh, thats great. Its so great to go down there after the show. Because people theres just love. They really love you. Seth so your characters name is alfred. Your paper boi is how youre referred to in the show a lot. Now when fans of the show recognize you, do they do you get paper boi or do you get alfred . I get paper boi a lot. But sometimes ill get paper bag. Seth uhhuh. [ laughter ] ill get paper back man. Ill get ill get seth this is how my mom talks about rappers. You know what i mean . Like i was like, you know, i saw there was this one person that came up to me and they were like, oh, yeah, you play that boy thats about paper, right . [ laughter ] its like, yeah. Sure. Seth but this is not your first time having a character with a name that is a little weird to get called in the streets . No. Seth you were in the original production of book of mormon. Yes. Seth one of the most the greatest broadway experiences ive had in my life. It was it was amazing. Seth and your character in that show we will beep it. You will beep it . Seth we will beep it. Okay. My characters name in the show is general butt [ bleep ] naked. [ laughter ] and which was a pleasure. I got like it was a pleasure to say every night. But when i left the stage, sometimes there would be people that, you know, wanted to like say i did a great job. So sometimes i would get, hey, thats butt [ bleep ] [ laughter ] youre butt [ bleep ] right . [ laughter ] im like, you know what, yeah. Yeah, i am. Yep. Seth a rare a rare time in new york where somebody could yell that. I was like, what a time to be alive. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] just yelling butt [ bleep ]. Seth you youre on this is us this year. Yeah. Seth another incredible show. And sterling k. Brown, one of the stars of that show, you have now how long have you guys known each other . Weve been best friends for a little over ten years. Seth wow. Yeah. Im the godfather to his first born son, andrew, who gave me this Fidget Spinner. Seth really . Thats nice i want him to know that i have it. And no one took it. Because hell roll up on you like you owe him money. If you know what seth okay, good. Yeah. [ laughter ] Fidget Spinner is, but i got it andrew. Yeah. And i have known him forever. Weve done theater in new york together most of our lives. But the thing is we were always acting adjacent to each other. Seth yeah. So like, we were never in scenes together or if we were in scenes together it was like a tableaux. Seth sure. So we never got to speak to each other. And we finally, finally got to do this really dope project that i just wrapped called Hotel Artemis with jodie foster were we play these, like, bank robber brothers. And i have a bit of a heroin problem in it. Seth all right. And it causes me to collapse. So sterling had to carry me for two days straight. Seth thats great. After ten years of friendship. I was like, thats what it is. Im not heavy. Remember, im your brother. [ laughter ] so carry me, man. Seth you aged throughout the episode of this is us. Yeah. Seth which is a show that does that. It kind of shows characters at different points in their lives. And you asked for your aging to be the same as your fathers. My dad. Yeah. My character ricky ages to 76, which was the age my father was at the time. He just turned 77 last sunday. Happy birthday, dad. [ cheers and applause ] make me feel good about what my future is going to hold after all that booze. But yeah, like he, i gave them a picture and they literally made me look exactly seth and i got to say like my dad seth they nailed it. Look at that [ laughter ] look at that. [ applause ] thats it like look at it, man. Seth yeah. Look at it. Seth you guys are good to go. I mean ive got the same grimace and everything. Seth same grimace and everything. Its fantastic. Seth well congrats on everything, man. Thank you. Seth i just love every time i see you and this is show is so good. Thank you, seth. Seth and its such a pleasure to have you here in person. Give it up for brian tyree henry, everybody. Aw, thanks. [ cheers and applause ] seth well be right back with janet mock. [ cheers and applause ] you totanobodys hurt, new car. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome back, everybody. Our next guest is a journalist, host, and New York Times bestselling author. Her new book, surpassing certainty what my twenties taught me, is available today. Please to the show janet mock, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome, janet. How are you . Im really good. Im kind of nervous, but excited. Seth oh, did you bring a Fidget Spinner . That seems to be i did, yeah. I think i need to borrow that from brian really quick. [ light laughter ] seth so congratulations on your second book. This is about your 20s. You are in your 30s now. Does it seem like it hasnt been that long a time to reflect back on your 20s already . Yeah, its kind of funny, because so many of these books are often written by women who are in their 60s and are reflecting back on their good old days. And so for me i really was working on this book at largely 32yearsold. And i had kind of just left it. Seth but, i mean i guess thats nice that your memory is probably a lot sharper as to what your 20s were when you write it. But, yeah, right . Theres that sense of theres that sense of, like, the closeness to it, which kind of brings, i think, a lot of more intimacy. Seth because im sure when im 60, my memories of my 20s will be, i will make myself far cooler than i actually was. [ laughter ] well there is also the threat of doing that, too, because im so close to the experience that i dont want people to judge me as much. Seth thats true. And also a lot of the people that you knew in your 20s, they probably are still your friends and they can say, like, hey, hold on one second. Well yeah, youre kind of well thats the thing with being a memoirist is that you kind of betray everyone in your life. Seth there you go. And now so this youve said this. You wanted this to be your first book. But your first book was about growing up trans and transitioning. And you felt like you had to get that one out of the way. Can you explain the what your thinking behind that was . Well i think so often, you know, most of the stories that we have to tell as trans people, have to revolve around our body. And so i felt really obligated to that when i decided to step forward at 27 years old and tell my story for the first time. And at that point i think that our culture was at a space where we needed more stories that were a bit more diverse in the trans genre or the transgender memoir. And so for me, i wanted to complicate that by showing someone who was young, who transitioned as a young person. Someone who was of color. Someone who grew up poor. You know, the opposite of some of the stories we see often times in media. Seth and was it [ light laughter ] im like trying not to say her name. I know, im so shady. Im so bad. Anyway. Seth no, dont worry. [ laughter ] everybody, by the way, knows that name. Thats kind of yeah. So heres the thing. But now, is it nice . Is it refreshing for you because obviously now more than ever, there is a sense that your readership would understand these issues a little bit more than had you written a book about transitioning 20 years ago. Does that give you a freedom as a writer . It does. Especially now, too. You know being able to, you know, in redefining realness, my first book, i really gave people language and definitions. Because as our culture, we were looking for language and definition. And now with this book im able to kind of just free myself and just center myself and not have to offer people like, im janet mock and im trans. Trans is an umbrella term that describes dadadada. You know, now i can just be like, im trans, and people kind of just get that already. And so there is a freedom to that. Seth and then you can move on to your life experiences. One of which is that you you interned at playboy . Yes seth so this was that was my big break. Seth that was your journalist big break. Yes. Seth and playboy was not what you expected it to be. It wasnt. Well, what was so interesting is, i remember sitting with a Career Counselor in at nyu, when i was in grad school. And i said, i kind of want to i really want this internship. Number one, because they pay 10 an hour and they also gave you school credit. Seth wow. So there you go. So this was like, this was the jackpot. Seth yeah. And i was like, can i, should i should i write something a little more ballsy . And she was like, yeah. You know, just use your voice, show them your sense of humor. Show them that that you can do this work. And i was like, my name is janet mock and i have three, you know i have three years of editorial internship experience. I have, you know, a masters on the way. And i also have a 34d. [ light laughter ] and it was such a bizarre moment for me, because i also got called in, so it made me made them very interested in me. Seth right. And then i got the job. Seth yeah. But maybe it was for the other stuff that you got the job. Well, it was. [ light laughter ] seth yeah. But i also think that there was a sense of, like theyre, like, okay she gets that this is like, you know, a t a magazine. Seth this is playboy. Yeah. She gets it. Shes not gonna take herself too seriously. And when i got there, it wasnt really glamorous at all. There were no girls next door. There was no hugh hefner. Seth the girls next door didnt come into the Office Every Day . No, they did not. Seth they didnt punch the clock . They didnt stop by fifth avenue. [ laughter ] seth so i want to talk obviously, theres an interesting time in our country with trans issues, because more of them are being represented on television, and in film, in literature. Still not the amount that probably seems fair, but more than ever. And yet at the same time we have an administration who is degrading those rights. How do you feel right now about the moment were living in . Im incredibly hopeful. I think that theres a lot to be afraid of. And theres a lot to be outraged about. But i think that what has happened in this moment is a sense of urgency and i think a sense of us reaching across our differences in our little spaces to kind of figure out how we can link arms and come together and try to resist. Right . And so i think that my community, specifically trans people of color, have largely always been a part of a resistance movement. I think about stonewall. It was largely, you know, marsha p. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera who were there resisting and thriving and trying to figure out ways to be creative and take care of their communities. And so i think that whats happening now is that a lot more people are outraged, and theyre trying to kind of figure out kind of some kind of hopefulness through coming together in a community to kind of resist the space. Seth well, i cannot tell you how great it is to have someone like you writing these books. I hope you keep it up. I cant wait to read your book about the 30s. I hope im in that one. In five years.
