You walk up early to walk the dog you need a jacket. Heading into the afternoon you wont because temperatures will be warmer today than what we saw yesterday. Its still a cool start to the morning. Were at 57 degrees, 55 in kenneth square, in shenandoah 53, 54 mount pocono, 51 degrees in allentown, 54 in reading, same thing in millville, take a look at the Atlantic City airport at 59. 52 in woodbine, so again it is a chilly start to the morning but your city planner shows by 6 00 a. M. , 60 degrees, by 9 00 a. M. , 66, with lots of sunshine. Once again today and then by noon temperatures at 77. Ill let you know how long temperatures will continue to climb and whats in store for the rest of the work week. Thats coming up in my next forecast. Right now we check in with first alert traffic reporter Jessica Boyington. Were on 95 now, that is construction around wood haven road. You can see a 14minute drive time. Southbound at wood haven to the expressway you can see here some lane restrictions, you do have some crew out on the scene. We have the left lane gone and it kind of stretches back and we lose the two lefthand lanes. Not a lot of traffic at this time moving by so you can see were doing fine. Something to watch out for in that construction will be there until about the 18th. So only a few more days. The schuylkill expressway heading through the conshohocken curve having no problems. Into the Center City Area now from the blue route to the vine street expressway we have a 12minute trip. From new jersey no problems, watch out for the one lane lost headed west into the city from the ben franklin bridge. Breaking news now from vornight. Police in mississippi confirm that the man suspected of murdering a College Professor is now dead. Nbc 10s Tracy Davidson is monitoring the developments in our operations center. And tracy, this man was wanted for two killings, right . Right. The man suspected of shooting his livein girlfriend and a University Professor is dead. Police say the suspect, shannon lamb, shot and killed himself after a police chase. This all started with a deadly shooting on the campus of Delta State University in cleveland, mississippi. Police believe lamb shot and killed a history professor there monday morning. Overnight police gave us this update. The crisis is over. This campus is safe again and our lockdown has been dismissed. We are really saddened by the loss we suffered but delta states a Strong Institution and were going to stand strong. Now this is the history professor ethan schmidt, the man police say lamb shot and killed, a relative tells us he had three children. The shooting sent Delta State University into a lock down. Students told to shelter in place. Delta state has canceled classes today but will be open for counseling. Police say lamb was a suspect in the shooting death of a woman he lived with, that happened hours earlier about 300 miles away from deltas campus. Well continue to monitor this and bring you new information. Tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. 4 minutes after 4 00. Philadelphia police say someone on the top floor of a Temple University dorm shined a laser at a police helicopter. The lieutenant of the Police DepartmentsAviation Unit tweeted this photo after 11 30 last night. If you look closely you can see a red light reflecting off the top of the dorm, the top floor window i should say. The lieutenant said someone inside quote hit us twice tonight, a few seconds apart. Police say they will not go after the person responsible this time but they want people to remember that pointing lasers at aircraft is illegal. It can temporarily blind the pilot. Happening today, the funeral home director the philadelphia director who stored bodies in a garage will go before a state board for a hearing. Last month police found three bodies in a garage after neighbors complained of an odor. The garage is owned by that woman there, janice powell, who operates a funeral home closed currently for renovations. She told us the bodies were there a few hours waiting to be picked up. The state board of Funeral Directors will review her license at a hearing. All right. Back to reality here. After a preseason that set expectations soaring the eagle Season Opener last night brought fans back to earth. The birds stormed back in the second half but came up short losing to the falcons 2624, chip kellys offense was expected to come out flying half. The first half was dreadful. Sam bradford was getting knocked all over. After half the offense got going, sam bradford hit Demarco Murray for a candidate candidate. The eagles took the lead but lost it. And right there they came up short on a 44yard field goal. Cody parkers attempt went awry. And the birds trying to come back, the pass off jordys hands and the eagles drop the opener 2624. After coach kelly talked about that missed field goal. Just a 44yarder. I dont know if it was rushed. Well have to talk to the guys on the field goal team and see where we were. I know he snapped it with 7 seconds. Sam bradford had an xray after the game, the eagles told us it was precautionary that he is okay. The same cannot be said for some bird fan who is took the loss pretty hard. The first half is a big hole. Its hard to get out of it. They were showing a lot of positive things in preseason. I dont know what happened. Work is under way along the parkway, its pretty obvious now, matt delucia is live to show us whats happening. Matt, we see the signs of transformation in center city. Reporter thats right. The parkway is starting to look a little different here behind me. You can see the fences are going up and also right over there you see some of the tents are set up. The transformation encompasses the streets, the sidewalks and everything in between. You can also see designated parkway location signs turning the area into a giant security grid. No stopping signs have gone up in the aerks and the protection comes all the way down to the mail boxes which have been tag forward removal ahead of the visit. I think they should do that. To be safe for the pope. I think its a great idea. Other items we saw did not have tags for removal. I mentioned this to friends, they thought there are hundreds of places that bombs could be hidden. So good news there. I checked with the pennsylvania turnpike. Were smooth sailing, westbound. Eastbound no problems, 23 minutes headed east from valley forge up to route 1. And coming up im going to do a check with mass transit. Were following a developing weather story out west. Look at this flash flooding here. Right now at least six people are dead and the death toll may rise. Well look at how rescuers are searching for more victims. Reporter deadly violence in one West Philadelphia neighborhood where it had not been before. Coming up find out how people on that street are taking it upon themselves to keep things safe. Following this developing story out of utah. Rescue crews are looking for six people swept away by flood waters. Its happening near the utah Arizona State line. Heavy rain caused this flash flooding and a wall of water swept away two vehicles. Seven people are confirmed dead, six missing. Well continue to monitor the search and rescue out of utah. Back here in philadelphia, someone shot a 21yearold man to death overnight in south philadelphia. Police say the gunman fired at least ten shots at the man. Investigators say someone saw the suspect riding a bicycle before and after the shooting. At this point no arrests. Violent crimes like that can tear a community apart. Weve seen it in this area for a while. One man decided to do everything he can to keep that from happening. Katy zachry met with this crime fighter. Katy . Reporter chris, this is a man who mentored youth for years but when young men started carrying out violence in his own neighborhood he took a different approach. This is Joseph Douglas, he says a series of violent events in his West Philadelphia neighborhood really shook it earlier this year. A young man was shot at the corner of his street and died and before that one of his neighbors, an offduty Philadelphia Police officer was walking his dog and attacked by an armed robber. Douglas decided to try to stop the violence happening on his door step by mentoring kids on his block and encouraging his neighbors to be more visible and active in the community. I think the violence taking place is really a sign of desperation. Its people who are hurting, dont know how to say im hurting, dont know how to ask for help. They continue to burn out of control this morning even with crews battling the flames around the clock this fire in Northern California is only 5 contained. The valley fire as its called surged to 62,000 acres. Thats 95 square miles. Its swallowing everything in its path. More than 400 homes burned, at least one person is dead, more than 13,000 people have evacuated. And this new video gives you a better idea of the challenge firefighters face. A reporter at our nbc station in los angeles captured this cell phone video. It shows what appears to be an Apartment Building just burning there. Completely engulfed in flames. Officials say the fight is far from over. We dont see an end in fire season for the months to come. Fire crews from around the country continue to arrive to help those on the front line. The biggest hope is a shift in the weather pattern that may bring rain. 4 17. New information now on that environmental settlement between the state of new jersey and exxonmobil. Four groups want to appeal governor christies settlement offer. A state superior court judge okd the offer. The state originally sued exxonmobil for 9 billion for contaminating sites across new jersey. Good morning. Its going to be a cool start as we head into your tuesday. Expect temperatures similar to yesterday in the 50s and 60s. So pretty cold as you head out for a jog or walk the dog before work. Dry start on tap, we do not have a chance of showers in our sevenday forecast. Plus, the 80s are back, temperatures today expected to warm back above average. So we had a nice break in the 70s, but now above average temperatures are here to stay for most of this week. For philadelphia right now, 62 degrees, our wind speeds out of the westsouthwest at 5 miles per hour, humidity at 62 . In allentown, 51. A bit warmer in cape may at 69. Philadelphia in the 60s. A bit of a temperature spread this morning. Were warmer in wildwood at 64, about 10 degrees cooler in mount holly at 54. And 57 degrees in trenton. At the Atlantic City airport were at 59 degrees. So another round of staying dry. Its not just for us in the northeast. This goes all the way back across the nation so it is a very quiet weather pattern for us. Plus we will see temperatures staying above average. High pressure still builds in. Tomorrow, same thursday, even into friday we stay dry. And our humidity is the only change well start to see toward the end of the work week. So by friday yowl notice that coming up from the south, give us that humidity back again. Thats going to stick around into next weekend. But warmer today, sun and clouds, 84 degrees. Will be the high in philadelphia. 80 in pottstown, 81 in allentown. Mid 70s in the poconos. Chris, it has both directions closed north and southbound on route 100 around route 113. You can see we have a fire engine on the scene. Police activity as well with all lanes blocked out. The best bet to get around that p. A. Turnpike parallel to that scene is the closest major. For 95 through delaware you can see cars are moving, no problems, 10 minutes north or southbound from 295 to 495. So we have no problems there. Our check on mass transit, good news for new jersey transit, patco and septa. More in the next 10 minutes on the route 100 accident. To south jersey, the Mercer CountySheriffs Office doing its part for child safety week to make sure that kids are properly restrained in vehicles. We know studies come out saying most parents dont properly install car seats. Deputies will be at the shop starting at 11 00 this morning to make sure parents have properly put in those seats. As you get the kids ready for school you want to listen to this. The nbc 10 investigators discovered that the state of pennsylvania does not know how many kids have been vaccinated. Mitch blacher has a preview. The latest numbers show more than 1 Million School kids may not have had shots. Im not sure why the discrepancy, there is that discrepancy but what i can tell you is weve been looking very closely at this data. What we have is too many kids who arent vaccinated. The investigators crunched the numbers and find pennsylvanias system for tracking vaccinations seems to be falling short. It creates problems and its done the wrong way it can put peoples lives at risk. Heres what happened. A barista allegedly denied a philadelphia sergeant in full uniform access to the restroom because he was not a paying customer. A fellow officer posted on facebook about the sergeants experience and that went viral. In it the sergeant writes as i walked out with my hand up and while she continued loudly to tell me about the bathroom down the street, i was even more astonished that the many customers and other employees said nothing and seemed indifferent. We got mixed reaction from people in philadelphia. So what. He is a public servant. Just like anybody he should be a paying customer. Starbucks responded to the incident by insisting that it takes steps to ensure that this doesnt happen again. Starbucks has expressed a desire to talk to the sergeant about his experience.
