Changeover of snow happens, well be checking for any slippery spots. Right now windshield wipers on and it just looks wet on the roads. We have a whole team of reporters spread out monitoring the conditions in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. And here in our studios, were tracking the storms and the roads and the travel impact. Lets begin with meteorologist Britney Shipp to get you updated. Im watching the changeover from rain to snow depending on where you live. Some people are seeing rain some snow some more of a wintry mix. Lets take you straight to the radar. Ill show you exactly whats happening. The green you can see for south jersey, most of the shore, all rainfall. But if you live in the poconos, Lehigh Valley, allentown its mainly starting to move into parts of philadelphia. Rain starting to change over to snow at this time. Same thing for darby. Theres a live look at 95. You can see the roads are wet, but were not really seeing any flakes flying across our video camera just yet. So we will continue to monitor the situation, and it will happen in the next 15 minutes or so. It will take a lot longer before we start to see snow moving down into parts of south jersey and along the shore. Heres our future weather. It shows when everything is going to take place. So closer to 5 00 a. M. Youll notice that most of the snow is going to be to the south of philadelphia. Starting to move into parts of millville. Just to the north of Atlantic City. It will not be until 7 00, 8 00 that we start to see the changeover taking place for Atlantic City right along the shore. One of the last places to switch over will be cape may. Dover will be seeing accumulating snow at that time. Closer to your lunchtime hour all of the dark blue you see here on our computer model, that is more of a moderate to heavy snow coming down. Thats accumulating snow. And if you notice most of the snow is going to happen in this region right here. Wilmington stretching all the way to new mount holly. Millville also included. Thats the bullseye of the ice tell system. This is what i was referring to. You can see by dover stretching out to camden gloucester burlington thats a six to nineinch rain. Thats where well see our most impressive snowfall amounts. Four to seven. Most of our suburb locations. And then closer to the Lehigh Valley, thats where we are going to see two to four inches. So typically with these systems those are the areas that see more snow. The poconos and Lehigh Valley, that is not the case with this system. Its going to be situated mainly to south jersey. Ill go over all the details about what you can expect in your neighborhood, how much snow coming up when i see you again. But for now lets take a closer look at the roads with jillian mele watching for any trouble spots. Good morning, britney. In the Lehigh Valley this is route 22 at airport road. And the roads are just wet so far. Same thing goes for i78 and 295. Headed to bucks county you see that light snowfall coming down. This is a live look. 202 parkway and bristol road. Again, the roads are wet. Same thing in center city philadelphia. Vine street expressway, free of any accidents, which is good news. It is quiet as far as traffic goes on the highways. Not dealing with any delays. And no big accidents out there at all. For drivers in delaware if youre heading out the door, this is what it looks like on 495 right at philadelphia pike. 495 is quiet as far as the traffic goes. And same thing for the majors in new jersey. Tracy . Our First Alert Team coverage continues with nbc 10s katiey zachry live in pottstown where its been snowing for about an hour. Tell us what the conditions are like. Actually we can see them, those are pretty big flakes. Reporter yeah they are pretty big flakes. You can see how quickly theyre coming down. The changes in the last half hour tracy, the temperature has gotten a degree colder. Its at 32 right at the freezing mark. Because of that the snow is sticking to surfaces now sidewalks, parking lots. Not the major roads. Thats pretty much clear of any accumulation. But in terms of accumulation you have a slight dusting on the surfaces i just mentioned. And also on surfaced where we have snow piles from storms over the last few days and weeks that weve had. So here up in pottstown and throughout Montgomery County schools are already closed or delayed. Ive been checking in on pottstown schools havent gotten an answer on that definitively, but throughout Montgomery County, School Officials have already called for closures or delays because of the storm coming through. And right now in the last few minutes, were really seeing the effects of it. Its leaving its mark and its not leaving any time soon. We know its going to be like this over the next few hours. So were going to monitor the conditions. Right now the snow is picking up. The flakes are bigger and its getting colder. Reporting live in pottstown, katy zachry. We take you to the poconos. The rain changed over to snow first north and west of philadelphia. So we saw snow earlier this morning here at camelback. Were still seeing some flakes. This is a live look at the ski resort. They will have no need to make it today because its coming from mother nature. Lets show you another live picture to give you an idea of the conditions. This is south philadelphia where the changeover happening over the last 45 minutes. The roads are still just wet because its so warm. But the temperatures are starting to drop. Also nchltsbc on henry avenue in roxboro overnight. Philadelphias snow emergency goes into effect in a couple hours at 6 00 a. M. Which means you have to get your car out of those designated snow emergency routes or the city will tow them. Nbc 10s Monique Braxton is live another snow emergency route, cottman avenue. Monique, what are you seeing right now . Reporter hi, tracy. In the past 10 or 15 minutes the cold rain now has an icy component. Were along the snow route here on cottman avenue. You can see that there are still two cars. Another one down the block, a third car. They all need to be out of here by 6 00. I checked with the Philadelphia Parking Authority before i went to bed last night to get an update so wed have that information for you this morning. They told us there will be three lots across the city, and at those three lots can you park 24 hours for a flat rate of 5. Well have that list for you on our website. Also on nbc news app. Over to the left here my photographer, wayne wright has been busy with me. You can see folks have their trash out. They also have their curbside recycling out. That has been canceled for the day according to the city. Theyre asking that residents will hold this until next week. Friday collections must be set at curbside for pickup and no rear drive collection friday and all of next week. And that of course is to allow the plows a chance to clear the streets and then clear those back driveways behind these houses here that you see in mayfair. Now, i also learned from the Streets Department that as of midnight they had about 350 pieces of equipment ready to roll when the snow begins to fall. Theyre going to do the snow emergency route first. Their primary roads, the secondary roads and then of course the residential streets. Now, weve been monitoring the School Conditions here. As tracy mentioned, more than 200 schools are already closed. Were awaiting a call return call now from philadelphia and the archdiocese. Well have that for you coming up in the next half hour. New jersey governor christie went on twitter last night to declare a state of emergency in new jersey which means the state can work with local governments. Christie urged people to stay off the roads as much as possible. Also state offices in new jersey will delay opening until 11 00 this morning. Camden county is prepared workers delivered 1,000en tos s tons of salt there yesterday. Crews reported at midnight to begin hitting the road with salt trucks and plows. Now lets get you updated on that changeover and the drop in temperatures. First alert meteorologist Britney Shipp is tracking the storm as the rain changes over to snow. Britney . Thats right, im tracking exactly where thats happening. If you take a closer look at our radar, if youre closer to cherry hill youre seeing rain but shortly its going to be switching over to snowfall. Were starting to see that changeover. And then as we take a closer look at National Park it is mainly rain right now but it is going to change over. As we take a closer look atop of Comcast Center tower, you can see its mainly raindrops coming down. But shortly once again our radar showing us that that changeover is taking place right now. Into marlboro same thing. The snow is just starting in those regions. And then as we take a closer look right along south jersey and the shore, its mainly rainfall. Closer to the Lehigh Valley and the poconos, mainly snow. So were watching as the snow continues to transition from the northern parts of our area to the southern parts. But it is going to take a while as we head into the rest of your morning hours. So closer to 5 00 6 00 thats when well start to see most of the snow just to the south of philadelphia. But it will not be until 7 00, 8 00 in the morning that we see the snow changing over in Atlantic City and also stretching into cape may. But once this system gets going, we are going to see most of the accumulating snow in south jersey just to the north of the shore. Philadelphias going to pick up four to seven inches. And well see our least amounts closer to the poconos in the Lehigh Valley. So thats unusual for us. Those are normally the locations that see the most snowfall. By 6 00 p. M. We start to see the snow tapering off, which is a good thing as you head home from work. You will notice our temperatures will drop down into the low 20s by 9 00 10 00 at night. Its going to stay that way into friday. Two to four inches for the Lehigh Valley. Allentown, bethlehem, reading, all in that range. Four to seven doylestown pottstown. If you are closer to Gloucester County camden county, Burlington County, thats six to nine inches. Newcastle county all included. Four to seven inches. Our impact for today includes falling temperatures and also bitter cold conditions expected tomorrow. Ill go over more details when i see you again. Tracy . Britney, thanks for that. Even though we are seeing that snowfall come down and in some cases especially as katy zachry showed us pretty thick snowflakes out there its still not creating problems on the highways but the roads are wet. You need to slow down and take your time even if youre not seeing snow sticking to the ground just yet. Septa operating on a regular schedule. Patco operating on a snow schedule. What are you seeing . Reporter we are still waiting for that changeover as well. Within the last hour it feels colder, but we are seeing light rainfall at the moment here. Its been happening throughout the night. Were along broadway here in pittman. You can see some of that wetness out on the roadways there. You can see some of the water dripping onto the side of the road here. Weve got a little bit of ponding. At this point its not looking too bad. But of course governor christie has issued a state of emergency for new jersey advising drivers to stay off the road if at all possible. Down there in the distance you can see there are a couple of vehicles out here on the roadways. Again, right now it does not look too bad as we wait for that changeover to happen within the next hour or two. But out here on the roadways right now, you can see that im actually slipping on some of the ice that is still remaining on the side of the road here. Of course, were expecting some of the larger accumulations to happen here in this area. Also delaware, as brittney has been telling us. We dont see too many people out walking or throwing out any salt at this point, but of course we are expecting conditions to change throughout the morning. Coming up in the next half hour im going to check and see what other counties in this area are doing, how they are getting ready. The department of public works. But for now in pittman, im matt delucia, nbc 10 news. We do have a team of reporters and photographers fanned out across the region to show you the changing conditions. And this is storm force 10 driving around. This is 95 north in northeast philadelphia. Still pretty wet on the roads as its hitting the windshield. Again, that changeover has been happening over the last 45 minutes or so. Septa says commuters should keep an eye out for changes. Right now some buss are running on detoured routes. We have an update on our nbc weather app and on nbc10. Com about whats happening. Septa says it will let us know by 10 00 a. M. Whether it will modify scheduled for this afternoon. Patco says its trains will run on a snow schedule. Things will run slower adding up to ten minutes each trip so allow for extra time on your commute today. If youre scheduled to fly in or out of or have somebody coming into philly international, you might have some problems. Philly international already canceled more than 120 flights today. Now, a winter storm like this one where rain quickly turns to snow presents a different challenge for area road crews. Penndot tells us it cant treat the roads with brine this time because the rain would have washed it away before the snow fell. Also, salt supplies are low. So penndot is using a mix of Crushed Stone and salt for the back roads but not for the higherspeed interstates. Primarily its used on roads that dont carry a tremendous very heavy traffic volumes because theyre like small stones and they could kick up and hit your windshield and strike the car. If youre driving, penndot urges you not to start out unless you have a full tank of gas. Crews say they dont need extra obstacles. Now lets get you updated on the forecast. Brittney shipp has that. Good morning. Im updating where were starting to see the rain switch over to snow. Philadelphia in the next couple of minutes should be switching over. Thats what our radar is showing us right now. National park right in that transition zone. Cherry hill still seeing rain at this time. If we take a closer look you can see the raindrops. Were not quite yet seeing the snow fly on our cameras but we continue to update you, and we will let you know. Also for village green, changing now. Logan, same thing, right in that transition period. And for the rest of the region, closer to south jersey it is all rainfall now. The rain has stopped in Atlantic City. Then its all snowfall as youre closer to the Lehigh Valley moving into the poconos. Jillian just confirmed to me that just to the south of reading, we are seeing snowcovered roads. Its starting to stick. Thats going to be the concern throughout most of today is the fact when youre trying to go to work and come home. Its a first alert weather day until 7 00 p. M. Be very careful until were done with this system. Visibility is down in allentown where the snow is coming down down to about a mile and 3 4. Same thing in pottstown, down to two miles in reading. And were seeing clear visibility because the snow has not started just yet closer to the shore. The temperatures tell the story. Were below freezing in the poconos. Right around the freezing mark for allentown. Same thing for pottstown. Still a little warm in philadelphia but thats going to change quickly. Thats going to be the next area of wilmington mount holly. Well also see our temperatures dropping as we head into the next couple of hours. So by the time you head home from work our temperatures will no longer be in the 30s. We will start to drop down into the 20s even as early as 10 00 a. M. Especially for philadelphia. As far as south jersey its going to take a while before our temperatures get down into the 20s. But by 1 00, 2 00 this is a widespread snow event. Well start to see moderate snowfall especially for south jersey. By 7 00 p. M. , lingering snow showers along the shore. Take a look in the low 20s into this evening. Those temperatures will stick with us headed into tomorrow. How much snow will we get in your neighborhood . Two to four inches for pennington new jersey. Quakertown, two to four inches. Same thing in allentown and reading. These are the highest amounts. Six to nine inches for christina, delaware. Smyrna, six to nine. Woodstown in that six to nine range. Coatesville, four to seven. This is accumulating snow we expect to affect both of your commutes until 7 00 p. M. We are going to be dealing with this entire storm system. If you are headed out in burks county, make sure you slow down and take your time because we are starting to get that sticking snow on the surface of the roads. In Chester County route 100, the roads still looking pretty wet there. That is going to change throughout the morning.
