Bill do we still have precipitation falling now . For most of the area no. But theres some trying to move into extreme jersey with limited success, but theres plenty of ice on the ground leftover from the light freezing rain we had for much of the day yesterday. The temperatures have not budged. We are below freezing in the city and the rest of the area. There you can clearly see where theres wet weather. Snow to the north and freezing rain for central and southern delaware, which is trying to reach into cape may. You might see a little bit of light drizzle there. Right now philadelphia is dry but some snowflakes are likely in New Castle County and delaware. That snow extends from the west to maryland this morning. Temperatures are stuck in the 20s right now from allentown to philadelphia to wildwood. Not much of of a variation as 26 in allentown, 28 for philadelphia and wildwood. Atlantic city millville, dover all at 28 degrees. Cold enough for icy conditions this morning. So be on the lookout for slippery conditions. It will be dry in philadelphia. Cloudy and 26 at 7 00. Still below freezing at 9 00 but well see the clouds thin out and the temperatures will be climbing. We will see the melting occur during the day today. By lunchtime, up to 35 degrees. Well go through it hour by hour with the future weather when im back in ten. Right now well go to first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. Good morning to you, bill. Big problems for drivers in new jersey this morning with a serious accident that happened last night on the new jersey turnpike. As a result we still closures on the turnpike. Southbound is closed at route 18, which is exit 19. Take route 130 if you need to get around it. The accident itself happened a few miles south of exit 9, but all traffic is being sent off the turnpike at interchange 9. Keep that in mind. This is a live look at the cleanup still going on. This is one of the many vehicles involved. The jackknifed tractortrailer right here. This is closer to exit 8, which is route 33. Thats where the accident itself happened. And crews are still out there doing the cleanup work. In the meantime route 130 will be your best bet to get around that problem. And heres more on that deadly turnpike crash in Middlesex County that happened after 9 00 in new township. Heres some cell phone video taken by one of the witnesses there shortly after the crash. Police say more than 20 vehicles were involved including seven trucks, a fully loaded bus and 15 cars. Investigators say icy conditions may have played a part in the accident but the official cause is still under investigation. So certainly be careful when you step out the front door this morning. Steps, sidewalks and other surfaces may look wet but they could be coated in sheets of ice. And the same applies to the roads. Katy zachry is live in wayne, Delaware County. Anything falling from the skies there now . Reporter right now, no. In the last 20 minutes we have had a light fine snow falling onto the ground. You can see the ground is covered, spotted rather with very light snow. It is slippery though. Dont let this deceive you even though it is not glistening like the black ice conditions. When you get out to your car, this is what youre going to see. But if you can hear this thats ice. Its a thin layer of ice, but its going to take a while to warm up your car and clear off the front windshield and the back of your car, your mirrors so you can safely drive around. On our way here we saw a number of plow trucks out there. So salt trucks plows are out. They are salting many of the roads. Reporter bottom line the nose gear didnt deploy. Thats what American Airlines told us when we reached out for answers. The American Airlines plane operated by us airways was flying from Philadelphia International to George Bush International last night. There were 52 passengers on board, 4 crew members. We talked to the Family Member of one of the passengers who described the terrifying experience. One passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Right now were gathering more information from the overnight News Conference and will have an update in the next 30 minutes. Live in the Digital Operations Center Tracy Davidson nbc 10 news. And new from overnight in hampton county, a twoalarm fire destroyed a home in the 1400 block of east University Avenue late last night. No reports of injuries at this point. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. And we have new information now about a house fire in wilmington. A man who was pulled from one of the burning homes last night has died. The fire started around 7 30 on north market street. Medics rushed the man to the hospital but he died a few hours later. We dont know his name yet. Two people suffered smoke inhalation and they are expected to be okay. Investigators are still looking into the cause of that fire as well. And now to the Atlantic City casino crisis. Revel is planning to cancel the 95 million deal to sell the casino hotel to a developer later this morning. And attorney for revel says it will file the notice sometime during Business Hours this mo. Now this comes after a federal judge yesterday refused to let the sale go through without considering the rights of revels former business tenant and the energy supplier. Now the potential buyer wants the Bankruptcy Court to extend the sale deadline to february 28th. The Attorney Says revel doesnt have the right to cancel the deal so well see what happens. How tired is the person driving the train youre on . Septa is playing by a set of rules that can lead train engineers to be exhausted. The federal government wants to change the rules. Jesse gary is joining us live from philadelphias 33rd station in center city. Thats a hearing today to address this policy why snow . Reporter thats right. Three years ago they asked and now they are receiving a certain waiver on safety rules. The local brotherhood of locomotives and engineers and trains believes this waiver puts Public Safety at risk. Specifically the union claims the affected employees work 14 hours a day and only one day off per week in most cases. They say the engineers have their sleep interrupted by calls from septa and this causes fatigue to impact safety. Union members point to other Regional Transit systems with workers to have shorter work days and workweeks. The unions wants the waive rules reinstated. We are looking into safety rules during a threeyear period. Well have septas response coming up next hour. Jesse gary nbc 10 news. All right. 4 08 now. The group tasked with finding solutions to wilmingtons Violent Crime epidemic will get to work today. The wilmington Public Safety Strategies Commission will meet for the first time made up of law enforcement, citizens and business leaders. The commission will look at ways to improve policing strategies. Yesterday nbc 10 broke the news that the New Castle County will be working along wilmington officers patrolling streets. The public is invited to comment at tonights meeting at 5 30 at the walnut street ymca. Clouds are overhead and we are tracking some light snow in parts of the area. Last night it was falling in the bethlehem area. Just a light snow mix with some sleet in the Lehigh Valley where they had a half inch. Very light snow that fell for about four hours. That snow on top of the ice that fell during the day yesterday makes for some very slippery conditions. And thats what were seeing for much of the area this morning. Clouds over the city. Nothing falling from the sky, but the problem is what is already on the ground. It is icy outside. And with temperatures in the 20s, that ice is staying put, at least through the morning commute. 21 right now in mount pocano. Clouds over trenton, 26 degrees. And wilmington on the radar we are reporting clouds. It has stopped precipitating in the pocano mountains. At least we can see the slopes this morning. Improving conditions there. To the south we are watching the snow just to the south of wilmington. You can see it moving to the north of middletown. Theres light snow that reaches into salem county and new jersey. To the south of that this is an area of some very light freezing rain. Its drizzle this morning for dover and into sussex county. Its trying to reach into cape may, so be on the lookout. Cape may is cold enough for some icy conditions this morning. Look at the 20s for chester springs. Horsham, 27 degrees. Farther north and west down to 25 in quakertown. Oxford is 26. And heading to the shore, yeah below freezing. Cape may harbor is 31 degrees. So might see some ice this morning. With Newark Middletown and dover in the 20s at 28 degrees this morning. The ground will be frozen and slick unless its been treated. By 11 00, temperatures are going to be in the upper 30s. Well still see clouds in the area, but the clouds will be thinning out later in the day. Thats when temperatures start coming down in the evening hours. 33 degrees in philadelphia. Then it gets cold overnight once again. So be on the lookout for slippery spots this morning. A mostly cloudy but dry day for philadelphia delaware its going to take several hours before that precipitation finally comes to an end. For the last couple of hours, the new jersey turnpike has been closed right at exit 9 which is route 18. You can take route 130 to get around it. The accident itself happens closer to exit 8. And this is what youre looking at right now as nj dot moves it around. A lot of the activity is still out there with a big cleanup having to be done. The southbound side you can see a lot of the Activity Still blocking the outer drive in this area right here at exit 8 which is route 33. So stick to route 30 regardless of what time youre traveling. Hundreds of students came together to honor 18yearold karli hall who police say was killed at the hands of her boyfriend. And grace will lead me home a candlelight vigil was held for karli a few hours after police announced that the freshman was beaten and stangeled inside her dorm room. Police got a call sunday morning from Gregorio Orrostieta her boyfriend, that she was having a heart attack. The injuries she suffered were far more greater than a backhand slap and push. She fought for her life. Orrostieta is charged with homicide and being held without bail. Students are starting a fundraiser to help karlis parents pay for the funeral. A university of delaware Football Player is facing charges after a fight over the weekend. Roman taitum apparently assaulted several people over the weekend. Taitum turned himself into police on sunday and is charged with assault. And Philadelphia Police are looking for a man who attacked a woman at a septa station in center city. It happened around 1 00 yesterday afternoon at the everson station. Thats the former market e station. The woman claims the man attacked thor in a remote area of the station. She was taken on to the hospital. We dont know how badly she was hurt. In virginia this morning authorities are expected to announce firstdegree murder charges against the man suspected of killing a university of virginia student. 32yearold Jesse Matthew was charged in Hannah Grahams abduction after she went missing in september. A monthlong search ended when her body was found a few miles from campus. Matthew was also leaked to the 2009 disappearance and death of a Virginia Tech student and the rape of another woman in 2005. Drew peterson remember him . Hes now charged in a plot to kill the prosecutor who sent him away to prison. Peterson a former Police Sergeant in suburban chicago was convicted in 2012 of killing his third wife. And hes suspected in theappearance of his fourth. While behind bars he tried to hire a hitman to kill the lead prosecutor of his murder trial. Today for the first time on capitol hill lawmakers will publicly address the Measles Outbreak spreading across the country. The disease has spread to 18 states including new jersey pennsylvania and delaware. Accord stock the cdc, the total number of cases is now at 121 and a vast majority is linked to the disneyland outbreak. Measles is highly contagious to cause fever, coughing red nose head eyes and the signature body rash. A newlyreleased report sheds light on the racially charged scandal against a School District. It is still kind of icy out there this morning. We had a long period of the light, freezing rain. And that builds up and its still frozen this morning on the untreated surfaces that are very slick. And some areas got a little light snow on top of the ice. That makes matters even worse. Look at the dramatic view a beautiful view from the Comcast Center in center city. Plenty of clouds but at least the snow the rain the sleet has ended for philadelphia. But we have to deal with the slippery conditions through the morning. In fact through midmorning well see a warm up. Things will be melting above freezing. Well get some breaks of sunshine. Theres bitter cold on the way for the weekend. Temperatures are coming way down. It may be the coldest weather of the entire winter we have seen coming in over the weekend. Heading out right now. 28 degrees in philadelphia. The wind is at 16 miles an hour. It will give us a windchill of 16 degrees and that wind will stay with us through the day. This is a view from the nbc 10 studios with the clouds here and a light breeze here at the studios. And some light, freezing rain in delaware. This is one of the areas of concern this morning. Central and southern delaware and into Cape May County look for some ice. And on top of the ice that has already fallen in New Castle County and into salem county, a little bit of light snow, very light stuff. This is the last bit of this system that started with us yesterday. Well see that drying out during the Morning Hours and the rest of the area is already drying out. Then our attention is going to turn to thursday when we could be in for some light snow during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Looks pretty impressive there. It will probably amount to less than an inch but the big news is what happens to be behind that snow. Thats when the cold starts pouring in to the area. For today, it wont be bad, the upper 30s to near 40 degrees this afternoon with winds 10 to 20 miles an hour. And the weekend, saturday is a whole lot better than sunday temperaturewise. We could see snow come through saturday afternoon and a bitter blast of cold air.
