We are following fire activity in north philadelphia on north 17th street between westmoreland and ontario streets. You can take 15th or 20th to avoid that area. The holy father made it official a little less than an hour ago. Taking a live look outside at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. We are expecting the archdiocese of philadelphia to comment on the announcement later this morning. Tracy davidson is joining us live from our Digital Operations Center with more on the official confirmation from the pontiff himself. Tracy . A lot of people very excited. After a trip to the vatican in march, the prayers of the philadelphia delegation have been answered. Plans have been in the works for this trip for months, but it just now became official. This will be the popes first visit to the United States and hes coming to philadelphia. Pope francis made the announcement in rome in opening remarks in a meeting sponsored by the congregation for the doctrine of the faith. He will talk about the world meeting of families scheduled for next september. The holy fathers expected to celebrate sunday mass along the ben franklin parkway at the event next year, and more than a Million People are expected. Registration to attend next years conference just opened last week. This confirmation comes months earlier than expected. Jesse gary is live in olney where the injured officers are being treated. How are they doing now . Reporter chris, one of the four officers has been admitted here to the hospital, but police say just for observation. He is not going to be placed into a room. The other three have been discharged. The fire investigators say the flames started in the second floor middle bedroom of a boarding home on shelton avenue. Several residents escaped on their own, but when police arrived, they used the vehicles fire extinguishers to try to rescue the person who perished in the flames. Coming up in the next half hour, im looking into the history of the four officers who tried to make that frantic rescue. Ill have that for you in 30 minutes. Live in olney, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. Happening today in montgomery county, the man accused of sending his romantic rival a toxic birthday card is set for trial. Nicholas hellman of hatboro faces charges including attempted murder. He was arrested in march. Authorities say he laced the letter with ricin and put it in the mailbox of a mandating his exgirlfriend in warminster township. Police intercepted that card after one of hellmans coworkers tipped them off. Investigators say he told them it was coated with sodium hydroxide. A bucks county teen accused of trying rape a girl at knifepoint in school is scheduled for a preliminary hearing. 15yearold Cody Hendricks is charged as an adult after police say he forced the girl inside a bathroom and threatened a teacher who interrupted the attack. A 10yearold boy is in Good Condition after accidentally shooting himself in the face. The officers who responded say it is a miracle that hes alive. The boy and his sister were inside a car waiting for their father to finish work in Darby Township late saturday night. Police say the boy found his dads revolver and accidentally shot himself in the face. We spoke to the officers who saved the boys life. Shut down every intersection on the way to the hospital, so, it was a clear shot from the scene right to the hospital. Time was of the essence. He was unresponsive. He could not talk to me, so at that point, i was not looking for a positive outcome that, fortunately, now we have. Yeah, somehow, doctors say the bullet missed the boys brain. Officers say they want to meet the boy once he recovers. Prosecutors are deciding if the father will face charges. Eight minutes after 5 00 now and happening today in northampton county, we should learn the results of a grand jury investigation into a scandal involving the Easton Area School district. Tom drago is accused of hacking into administrators computers and keeping photos of nude women on his laptop. A grand jury was looking into allegations of tintimidation an tampering with records. They will have a meeting at 10 00 a. M. To release the grand jurys report. Septa will update today its plans to bring trains to the king of prussia area. There is a project under way now that would branch off the norristown highspeed line into king of prussia and valley forge. Septa wants to hear from residents tonight on possible routes for that rail service. It would bring people to the malls, casino, hotels and other business district. This is a very expensive undertaking. Thats why were doing the feasibility study, to see if the service would be needed, which all signs point to with that area growing as it is, it would be. Now, septa says this is very early in this process. The rail service wont happen for at least ten years. Tonights meeting will be held at the Radisson Hotel in valley forge in king of prussia from 4 00 to 8 00. Today environmentalists are planning to protest the keystone xl pipeline. Members of the Delaware Sierra Club and other groups will meet outside of the Senators Office in june. Its a chilly rain thats falling across the area this time. Thats a live view of a damp cape may. The temperatures nicely above freezing for the delaware valley, but we are watching some icy spots this morning. A steady rain this morning into this afternoon. It wont taper off until this evening. The only trouble spot this morning, the pocono mountains, which are starting with some freezing rain mixed with the rain. That wont last. It will warm up, even in the mountains, but things get much colder as the week goes on, and a little later this week, we will see plunging temperatures and a possibility of record cold, the coldest weve seen in close to 100 years in some spots. 32 degrees, right at the freezing mark for mt. Pocono, where its a mix of rain and freezing rain, but plain old rain for trenton and dover. Dover at 43 degrees. Well see an entire area warm up. Pocono mountains, you can see some of the snow on the ground, not adding to it right now, Mother Nature isnt. No snow in the forecast for the pocono mountains. This rain continues through the Lehigh Valley. And here, farther to the north, into new york state, thats where the snow is falling this morning. Its an icy mix right now in the Higher Elevations of the pocono mountains. President obama offered his condolences to the family of american aid worker peter kassig, the latest hostage to be murdered by isis. The Group Released a video sunday showing the beheading of several men. Kassig is believed to be among them. The 26yearold was a former army ranger from indiana who served in iraq. He traveled to syria last year to volunteer as a medic and was captured by isis. He converted to islam in captivity, taking the name abdul rahmaan, and president obama released this statement, reading in part today we offer our prayers and condolences to the parents and family of abdulrahman kassig, also known as peter. We cannot imagine their feelings at this time. Abdulrahman was taken from us in an act of pure evil. Travelers arriving in the u. S. From mali starting today will undergo the same ebola screenings as people arriving from west africa. Now, that means those passengers will have their temperatures taken, answer questions about their precipitation as well as provide Contact Information so that they can be monitored for 21 days. Now, mali is not experiencing a widespread ebola outbreak, but u. S. Health officials are increasingly concerned about a new cluster of illnesses in that country. And the surgeon who contracted ebola while working in sierra leone remains in extremely Critical Condition at the Nebraska Medical Center in omaha this morning. Doctors say they are doing Everything Possible to help dr. Martin salia fight that disease but call it an hourbyhour situation. Salia is the third ebola patient to be treated at that hospital in omaha. The other two recovered. In ferguson, missouri, a grand jury could decide soon if charges will be filed against that officer who shot and killed michael brown. Yesterday demonstrators took the streets to mark 100 days since the unarmed teenager was shot and killed by officer darren wilson. Over the weekend, the st. Louis post dispatch obtained police records, including Surveillance Video showing wilson at a Police Station two hours after the shooting. Police in new york city are looking for the person who pushed a man in front of a subway train, killing him. Witnesses told police the 61yearold victim and his wife were waiting for a train at the station in the bronx yesterday morning. The attack appears to be random. The suspect ran from the station. Security improvements to the u. S. State departments email system are expected to be finished today or tomorrow. Now, this comes after a hacker got into that system. A Senior Department official says activity of concern was detected in the departments unclassified email system in late october. He says there was no compromise of any classified documents. The entire system has been shut down since friday while those security upgrades are made. Right now, open enrollment is under way for the Second Season of the Affordable Care act. Health and Human Services secretary Sylvia Burwell says 100,000 people submitted new applications over the weekend on healthcare. Dozens of families will have a thanksgiving turkey this year, thank to some of Atlantic Countys finest. Members of the Atlantic CountySheriffs Department dropped off turkeys yesterday at st. Officials said about 60 families will receive turkeys, thanks to donations from the Sheriffs Department and other charities in Atlantic County. Runners pounded the pavement in pittsburgh to help the families of two Pennsylvania State troopers. Bryon dickson and Alex Douglass were honored at the officers down 5k yesterday. Dickson was shot and killed outside of the Blooming GrovePolice Barracks in september. Douglass was wounded in the shooting. In the pocono mountains, theyve been making the snow at blue mountain, but this morning its a mix of rain, very light rain and some freezing rain as well. Temperatures nicely in the 40s, well above freezing for the i95 corridor. The coolest temperatures are north and west, but its above freezing for levittown, langhorne, middle 30s for doylestown and 37 degrees at shell font and warren. Kintnersville, 36 degrees, so no sign of icing and there wont be north and west. Just in the pocono mountains and farther to the north. Its a steady rain for philadelphia and dover. Cape may is just out of that rainfall. Well likely get a break at times before the next round of rain moves in from the southwest. You can see it. What we wont get from this system is the snow. That will not make it into our area. But the cold that is producing the snow . Oh, yeah, we are going to get that. Future weather hour by hour shows 4 00 this afternoon well be in the 50s with a steady rainfall again in delaware and south jersey. It will be tapering off during the evening hours. And by late this evening, thats when well see the colder temperatures start to move in. 11 00 tonight, 38 degrees in allentown and pottstown, 43 in philadelphia. Poison control data shows that out of more than 5,000 calls about the highly caffeinated drinks, nearly half of those involved kids under the age of 6. Many of those children suffered serious cardiac symptoms or seizures. A new Study Reveals the dangers of Secondhand Smoke from marijuana. Researchers did tests on lab rats and found that their blood vessel function dropped 70 when exposed to secondhand marijuana smoke. That can harden arteries and cause a heart attack.
