A plum island home ravaged by fire. A charred shell barely standing. The bright flames sent black smoke billowing through the community this afternoon as the scene looking for flareups. Neighbors say this could have been even worse if not for some helping hands. Our jim smith is live on plum island tonight and he joins us with the very latest. Jim . Reporter well, ken, we still dont know what caused this fire here on plum island. But i can tell you that investigators with the state Fire Marshals Office were here for most of the evening and meanwhile take a look at whats left of this house. Unfortunately its in ruins. But incredibly nobody was hurt and as you will see, it could have been much w. Fire crews work into the night. Soaking down hot spots only hours after an inferno destroyed a home on plum island. The five alarm fire broke out sat saturday afternoon and it was roaring in no time at all leafing a home in dash leaving a home in ashes and badly damaging the others. My moms house. Reporter amys family home neighbors and families. It wasnt any one house that anyone was caring about. It was everybodys houses. And everyone just pitched in and people grabbed hoses and buckets and they were throwing water. Everywhere. Reporter but not everybody was so lucky. Kenny doors family home was incinerated along with some cars parked out front. Its very upsetting. Yeah. Its very upsetting you know to see Something Like that happen. And your whole house goes flames pretty much. Its very surreal right now. Hasnt set in. Tonight i will not go back to my house. Reporter the fire could be seen for miles around, from land and the sea. The damage is severe but incredibly nobody is hurt. It took a group effort to keep the entire neighborhood from going up in flames. Mutual aid from as far south as middleton and as far north as the New Hampshire seacoast. They did a great job in the heat and proud of all of them. A great job by everybody involved in making sure that these flames did not spread even further. That includes an offduty fire captain who lives right here on the street and sounded one of the first alarms. The das office says Austin Robins was killed after the car he was in went out of control and struck several trees. People gathering to drop off flowers and cards or just taking time to reflect. The driver 19yearold joseph cap of gardener has been charged with drunk driving and Motor Vehicle homicide. In boston, a string of violence is being tied to this weekends caribbean festival. Reporter ken, police say that shooting that killed a man was actually indirectly tied to that parade but the Community Tells me that this parade is both respected and part of their tradition. That suspect quickly took off and ran down College Avenue and jumped into a car. Police are investigating. Aquinas man is facing charges after driving into a hingeham cafe. Police say Jeffrey Mahoney went over the sidewalk and right cafe on north street last night. Two customers inside were seriously hurt and a passenger in the truck was also injured. Scary moments on board a Southwest Airlines jet when part of the engine comes apart midflight. These images obtained by wbz news show the engine with its front cover torn off and passengers were going from new orleans to orlando when they heard a blast and oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling. The flight continued on for about 30 minutes before making an Emergency Landing in pensacola. It was shaking right afterwards and that sound. Just like blew. You could hear it blow. Then there was that rattling after it and we and i was shook a lot when we were landing. Parts of the engine tore off and damaged other parts of the plane including a wing. Luckily nobody was hurt and the plane landed safely.
