With scott pelley. Pelley today the governor of South Carolina said the state is finally shifting from emergency to recovery. The record flooding is blamed for 21 deaths in the carolinas. 27 dams have failed and more than 100 others are still at risk. More than 300 bridges and roads are closed, leaving many people stranded. David begnaud is in big dam, South Carolina. David . Reporter scott, were in the one community that is still in a response mode. This is the community of big dam. There is only one road leading in and out, and tonight the bridge to get there is buried underwater. I terrorize to squeeze by him. Reporter 15yearold hunter byrd has become the lifeline for his community. How many days have you been doing this now . Since tuesday. Reporter how many hours each day . Seven and seven. Reporter are you getting paid . No. Reporter hunter even ferried people to church on a road that looks like a river now. Tawanda smalls lives here. Oh, my god. Hunter is our hero. I look at him being david in the bible and this water is goliath. Reporter jennifer coxs daughter has cerebral palsy. She was running out of jennas made food source. Hunter brought us speed pedia for next two, three weeks. Reporter and hunter hauled it across the water for them. What would you norm will be doing on a monday . Going to school. Reporter but school is closed. Hunter hauled food and water and bottled water donated by charities. Gratitude is whats fueling an exhausted fire department. By humvee, helicopter, whatever it takes, well get to it. Reporter the water has dropped, three the five feet in some places around georgetown county, but its still dangerously high. Five miles east, back in big dam, hunter brit is ready for another run. He wanted to do it. He sad he wanted to help the community. Last night he got out of bed. Reporter christina brit is his mother. Im so proud of my son. Reporter as the sun sets here over big dam tonight, hunter is still shuttling people back and forth. Scott, this will be the eighth night that residents will go the sleep stuck along a fourmile stretch of county road. Pelley David Begnaud covering the Flood Disaster from the beginning for us. David, thanks very much. There is a new controversy tonight surrounding the house Benghazi Committee. The panel that was set up to investigate the terror attacks in libya that killed four americans, including Ambassador Committee investigator Bradley Podliska was fired, but he and the Committee Chairman disagree on why. Heres nancy cordes. Reporter podliskas claims are another blow to the house benghazi investigation, but republicans say hes lying. The air force reservist says he was fired as an investigator for the committee because he refused to focus solely on former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and her emails. This has become a partisan investigation. I honestly do not believe this investigation was set up to go after hillary. I believe it shifted that way. Reporter but republican trey gowdy who chairs the Committee Said podliska was terminated in part because he himself manifested improper partiality against clinton. He says podliskas accusations came only after he demanded money from the committee in mediation, and the committee refused to pay. Democrats say it is more proof that the committees chief goal is to destroy the likely they say the House Majority leader all but confirmed it when he said this everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right . But we put together a Benghazi Special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today . Reporter internal documents obtained by cbs news show that the committee originally planned to hold nine hearings this year to hear from eyewitnesses, intelligence officials, and the secretary of defense. But none of those hearings has taken place, and only one is scheduled with clinton as the lone witness later this month. On 60 minutes last night, president obama argued the scrutiny of clintons private server has been overblown. She made a mistake. Shes acknowledged it. I do think that the way its been ginned up is in part because of politics, and i think shed be first to acknowledge that maybe she could have handled the original decision better and the disclosures more quickly. Reporter republicans say theyve had to scrap some of the hearings theyve had planned because they have had difficulty procuring some of the relevant documents from the obama administration. Scott, they say they always intended to do most of their work behind closed doors. Pelley and the Benghazi Committee has been going on for nearly 18 months. Now nancy cordes in our washington newsroom. Nancy, thank you. Two suicide bombers, each dressed in 11 pounds of tnt, killed at least 97 peace marchers in turkey on saturday. It is not clear who is behind the massacre, which apparently targeted kurds, a minority ethnic group. Heres Holly Williams. Reporter as the family buries their dead, this family family country is grief stricken and also angry. Hundreds were holding a rally for peace when instead two explosions left carnage on a city street. Arms and legs were flying up into the sky, said this man. Two of my friends were killed, but i survived. The attack follows a flareup in violence between the turkish government and militants from turkeys kurdish minority, fighting between the two goes back decades, originally fueled by a kurdish desire for [explosion] in july a suicide bomb claimed more than 30 lives, and though the culprit is unclear, it rekindled tensions, sparking hundreds of killings on both sides. The turkish government began launching air strikes on kurdish militant camps. As kurdish politicians tried the lay flowers at the scene of the attack yesterday, there was a confrontation with police who said investigators were still working at the site. The turkish Prime Minister said that kurdish militants and isis nobodys claimed responsibility, and many of the mourners believe the turkish government is to blame because they say it stirred up unrest ahead of National Elections next month. Less than three weeks from that election in which kurdish voters could play a decisive role, the mood here in turkey is anxious and, scott, many people are expecting more violence. Pelley Holly Williams in istanbul tonight. Holly, thank you. Tonight for the first time former Blue Bell Ice Cream workers are claiming that management ignored complaints about conditions at their factory in texas that was linked to an outbreak of list tiera. Ten people got six from the bacteria and three died. The Company Recalled eight million gallons. Before this blue bell was the numberthree brand in the nation, sold in 23 states. Jim axelrod has our investigation. [horn honk] reporter until Early Morning house of august 29th, a single truck left Blue Bell Creameries of brenham, ice cream. When the Company Recalled all its products in april, its loyal customers sang their support. Oh, blue bell the best ice cream in the country prayed for their return and blasterred branham with signs. God bless blue bell. Its a fantastic product. But at the same time, theres a bad side to blue bell where everything was overlooked. Reporter for the last seven months leading up to the shutdown, Terry Schultz operated this machine at the brenham blue bell factory. I a lot of times i walked in there and this was ice cream all over the floor. Reporter what do you mean all over the floor . Sometimes the machines would go haywire. On the floor. Reporter schultz says stopping to clean up the ice cream would slow down production, so workers left it an environment where bacteria could flourish. When he complained to supervisors, he says, nothing was done the correspondents i got at one point was, is that all youre going to come in here and bitch every afternoon . Reporter what do you think his message was . Production is more important than cleanliness. Its all about the money. Reporter fiveyear blue bell veteran gerald bland operated a fruit blender. He was told to pour fruit juice that dripped off the machine into barrels of ice cream mix to be used later. Youd see oil on top from the fruits that were leaking. That would still go right into the barrel. Reporter it would have been possible to oil from the machine end up in some of the ice cream . Yeah. Reporter bland says that practice stopped a year before the shutdown, but other problems persisted. Listeria thrives in wet environments, and both schultz and bland told us water was everywhere. On the wall by the threegallon machine. If it would rain real hard and water sat on the roof, it would just trickle down that wall. Reporter rainwater . Yeah. From the roof . Yeah. Reporter would get into the factory . Yeah. It had a couple times where it actually flooded area two to where they had to cut the machines off because it was too much water over there. Reporter what bland and schultz told us they saw is consistent with f. D. A. Findings. When the f. D. A. Inspected blue bells main plant here in brenham, texas, in march, they found a number of violations detailed in this report, including condensation dripping into the ice cream, dirty equipment and paint chipping from the ceiling directly above in the years leading up to the outbreak, the state inspected the brenham factory about every six weeks, and the army, which had a 4. 8 Million Dollar contract with blue bell, inspected four times a year. None of their inspections revealed violations that stopped production. Gerald bland questions the inspection process. We never. The whole time i was there, had a surprise inspection. As soon as they pulled up in the parking lot, the phone call starts. Everyone knows right away, you window. Reporter the ice cream that sickened five people was made on this production line. Blue bell shut it down in march, after confirming it was contaminated with listeria. But in other parts of the plant, production continued for weeks. Nothing changed. The last two weeks, thats when they changed washup procedures, and they started retraining some of us. Reporter isnt that closing the barn door after the horse gets out . Oh, i think all the animals got out by the time they shut the door. This is a terribly sad day for all of us at the company. Reporter on may 16th, paul kruse, the companys c. E. O. , announced the companys first layoffs, including gerald bland. There are a lot of things that could have been done to prevent this. I feel sorry for the people who died and got sick. Reporter blue bell says pending litigation prevents them from addressing our report, but in a statement to cbs news, they wrote, we are committed to ensuring were producing a safe product to our enhanced manufacturing procedures, including increased focus on sanitation and cleaning, ongoing evaluation from independent microbiologists, voluntary agreements with our state and hold procedure. That means they cant distribute any product they produce until a test confirms its safe. But, scott, their flagship plant in denham, texas, is still closed. Pelley part two tomorrow. Reporter back in november, the Security Camera at a Cleveland Park captured 12yearold tamir rice brandingish something that concerned a caller to 911. Hes pointing it at everybody. I dont know if its real or not. Reporter but the Police Dispatcher never conveyed the callers uncertainty to the officers on the scene. He keeps pulling a gun out of his pants and pointing it at people. Reporter acting on that information, the police pulled up to rice and within two minutes rookie officer Timothy Loehmann shot him dead. Shots fired. Black male. Reporter tamir rice was holding an airsoft gun. It looks like an a real pistol bullets. Two reports found that it was reasonable for loehmann to have seen rice as a threat and reasonable to have responded the way he did. But attorney walter madison, who represents the rice family said the cops decision to speed into the park instead of approaching situation where none existed. You cant create the danger and then claim to be fearful of it. Reporter Mildretta Warner Davis says, the victims grandmother, says the past year was torture. This will never go away, never go away. I had no other choice but to bomb, in this case, selected military targets and supply buildup areas. The results have been very, very effective. Pelley president nixon out thing the effectiveness of the bombing of North Vietnam in a cbs news interview in january of 1972. Well, now newly revealed topsecret documents show that the very next day the private nixon wrote what he really thought. David martin reported this story for cbs sunday morning. Reporter richard knicksons candid opinion of the bombing of vietnam, scrawled across a report from his National Security adviser, Henry Kissinger we have had ten years of total control of the air in laos and vietnam. The result zilch. A topsecret document discovered more than four decades after the fact by reporter bob woodward. What quite frankly i think changes the historical understanding of vietnam s that nixon, the commanderinchief himself, realized the failure. Reporter according to woodwards research, nixon had already ordered the military to drop nearly three million tons of bombs and would order another million dropped in the year after the zilch memo. It takes the concept of military leadership by a president and turns it on its head. Reporter the document was given to woodward by former nixon aid alexander butterfield, who took it with him when he left the white house. You may remember butterfield as the witness who electrified the water gate hearings by revealing the existence of the secret white house tapes. Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the oval office of the president . I was aware of listening devices, yes, sir. Reporter nixon was forced to resign when the tapes revealed he had personally ordered the coverup of the watergate breakin. Butterfield faded into anonymity until two years ago when he turned 20 boxes full of white house documents over the woodward. The reporter who had uncovered much of the watergate scandal. Some of those documents are classified top secret. How did you just walk away with them from the white house . It was easy. I just walked away with them. Reporter the zilch memo is still technically classified top secret, and government archivists have contacted woodward about retrieving that and other documents in butterfields boxes. Once that happen, perhaps the archives of the nixon years can at least be considered complete. David martin, cbs news, washington. Pelley and thats the cbs evening news for tonight. Around the world, good night
