Dangerous travel continues this afternoon in the foothills as temperatures stay below freezing. Dozens of wrecks kept crews busy today. Our Steve Ohnesorge has the latest from hickory. It has been a mess across the foothills not because there was a lot of snow or sleet or freezing rain but there was just enough. And just enough to cause big problems. Jake sanders says this happened without warning. Hit a sheet of black ice going 25. Where he thought the road was clear it wasnt. He slid off the road and into a ditch. Across the foothills, rescue crews were working nonstop. The main roads were not immune this is i40. Highway 321 had bad spots, too. Folks driving right into trouble. It can be deceiving. At the bridge over highway 10 this s. U. V. Rolled over. English but got the message across. Actually flipped four times. And as crews worked this wreck, a truck hit the bridge guardrail 100 feet away. Chest the hill and lose control. With more rain and sleet adding to the misery, ed had this advice. Stay home today. Highway crews are doing what they can. But these are not fun roads to be on right now. If you are going to go out, be sure you are careful, especially in those areas that are normally shady. I put my hood up its been im on 277. And so are ncdot crews monitoring and seeing how traffic is responding to the roads because with freezing rains it can get tricky. In charlotte we have not seen a ton of freezing rain but with the prolonged cold we have had over the last few days, that is what is the ground is cold and that is what is concerning. They prepped for the storm by laying 68,000 gallons of salt brine. And parked in kilo indications near exit ramps and offense passes to see if icey patches development most of this day has been spent watching. Crews started their days around this morning around 3 00 a. M. Im told as the temperature increases some of them will be sent home because the potential for ice decreases. And yeah, it is in the form of rain if the temperature is falling on is below freezing then it will freeze on contact and that is why it is an issue. And we have our temperature that is still not above the freezing mark. 3 0 in charlotte. Your humidity has come up from yesterday. We had dew points in the singledigits. Now we have dew points in the 20s and that allowed the atmosphere to moisture up. Yesterday when snow was not reaching the ground it can make it down because the ground is saturated. There and temperatures are below freezing. If anything falls on the roadways that are below freezing, yeah, that is when you will have the problems. Foothills temperatures in the mid20s now. 30s low 30s for most of our South Carolina counties and eastern North Carolina counties. 33 our warm spot is in boone for the time being. We still have a winter storm warning in effect for the mountains and more counties in the foothills. Most of us have a Winter Weather advisory and union county North Carolina there is a freezing rain advisory. Here is what it looks like. We have light freezing rain in our foothills. South carolina is where the heaviest rain is falling. And temperatures are below the freezing mark. Here is charlotte and uptown here. If you are traveling down 77, mecklenberg county, are you likely to run into that freezing rain. Also just about all around 485, if you are traveling in that area, you need to be careful for the possibility of freezing pineville, idlewild, matthews, providence, mint hill all of those areas do have the potential for slick spots. Right as people are coming home from work this evening into South Carolina, we have more freezing rain. You will notice fort mill you have pink and unity you have the potential to see freezing rain. Here is 77. And then farther south in South Carolina it looks like its just rain. If your temperature in your area in particular is just below the freezing mark, again, there could be problems. We have warm air just to the west of us. We have heard reports temperatures in the 50s in the mountains of tennesseement and to the east its warm. We have one cold air trapped area that just has really had a hard time mixing out. That is going to mix out. So before by midnight we should all be seeing temperatures above freezing. But here is the rain we have back to the west. And there is a whole lot of it. Here is the light stuff thankfully as the coldest air is in place. And here comes the heavier precipitation during the overnight period and we could have heavy rain tonight. More than a inch in some spots. Tomorrow wet in the morning 45. 57 is your high.
