From the Yellow Hammer looping Weather Center. Hi Dave Broder to speak with New Year to what's up. I really want to know if you do it Mike you know this is kind of my ha moment and I was comparing and the bill numbers are going up and I've been paying on them for what seems like forever and I am in the income based grand and on the federal student loan forgiveness plan which I'm not counting on it but I'm wondering if I should refinance that and be playing in the fall on the mound now while it's on my that snowball it's kind of the top one on my less right go or should I just keep them in the income based class and pay that minimum balance and then just keep it there while I'm on the debts now ball or refinance sorry when you get where you're now at the top of the debt snowball you mean it's the largest debtor your smallest that cracked the largest Ok and so on how much other debt do you have how much debt do you have total not counting your house. Not counting my house. About $800.00 on one credit card $3800.00 on another conductor not a line of credit I have a $17000.00 car payment and about $30000.00 to know and what if you're not on I think about $60000.00 a year and I'm a single mom. Pretty expensive car. Rental Car p.m.i. Ok. And you're just starting this whole thing yeah I did started the budget every dollar about and good for you how old are you. Really want good for you Ok good good on Prodigy a good start All right well the income based is never is always going to go backwards almost always depending on your income but usually it creates a payment that does not even cover the interest and so the extra half is added about the balance Ok so the income based does not ever get you out of debt in been less you have a very high income which you wouldn't be on income base usually for then so and as you know you've already discovered in a short time listening to us that you know we're discovering the income our the student loan forgiveness program is a fraud. 30000 people have applied for it 93 have gotten it and share my story and I have here that I can now do you know and it's so it's pretty pretty bad plan so anyway the. We've got to have another way to get rid this debt now so we're going to work that debt snowball clear of all these other debts when you don't have any payments but the student loan then you're going to be able to attack the student loan with a vengeance and you'll clear it up in less than 2 years at that point so you probably have about a 3 year plan. Because I heard about Ty's I know you're going to you're going to work extra and you're going to sell some stuff you may need sell this car and get down there and down into about a 5000 dollar car and that'll help you get rid us of a big hairy payment number one how much your payment on that car. About 305 down that's a lot but I have it on a 7 year 7 year Yeah well you 9 more because you're paying it often 3 or your I mean I read of it because what I'm looking at here is basically I've got about. $60000.00 worth of that making $60000.00 so if we do 28 year if we do 20 a year for 3 years that puts you out of debt that's what I'm looking at if you can't do that and your you can't get the can't see your way of doing it in the budget then you do need to get rid of the car but I think that's probably pretty doable somewhere in there you're probably working some extra jobs or some overtime you're probably shelling some other stuff you're definitely not seeing the inside of a restaurant like you're working there you're definitely not going on vacation you have a freaking mess you are cleaning up here and it's scary and I got rid of a can sneak out good but it's scary looking at all this and if you don't so here's the thing it doesn't matter what payment plan you're on with your student loan if it's going to be gone in 3 years anyway. So I mean you could continue to pay the income based until you get to it on the debt snowball and then tear into it right when you're when you're there because that's going to be only debt left at that point you're going to go bananas on that thing and just knock it out and so that. You know how you pay your debt snowball are how you pay your student loan or whether you pay your student loan doesn't really matter. If you're God if you're on a 3 year plan to get rid of it because you're going to be done with it that quickly anyway and that's where you need to be so we've got to get you tied into that let me do this let's put you into Financial Peace University the 9 week class and then financial peace the one your membership which will give you the upgrade for your every dollar every dollar plus and connects to your bank and you can go to the 9 we class and you can get in the online communities that are really supportive and you can watch the stuff we do streaming as all kinds of stuff in this membership it is a very very valuable thing and I give it to you for free I want to help you get turned around on this get out you can do this Sarah is with us in New York hi Sarah welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Or are you better than I deserve what's up. Really. Can start. And I was wondering how much. It's up to you you can decide Ok You know it's a pretty simple the reason for your call is is the equation stranger in the equation is the more I spend on vacation the less I put in my house downpayment fund Yes and I feel. Well that's a that's a positive adult kind of a thing not a not a negative shame but just this idea that you know how era you know how much you know you obviously want to go on some kind of a vacation but so what your household income. Or her income is $120000.00 how much is in your house downpayment fund so far we've just reached 30 that are good for you well Don. So I want your go. The goal is to buy a $250000.00 house and have somewhere between 15 between 15 percent to 20 percent down so they want to make room like yes you have 30 Ok yes and when you talk about spending on the vacation. We have budgeted $4000.00 to come to South Carolina for a few guys with his coke id so we budgeted $4000.00 for that putting like restaurants for we. Know you're going to enjoying our son while you're there. Very cool. I would I know what I would regard as a financial issue alive I would do a $4000.00 vacation in this scenario it's not throwing off your goal that much I would not do a 14000 dollars vacation in that scenario. The ratios are what I'm looking at your income the amount you have saved and your goal 4000 doesn't throw you off your goal 14000 would that's where I'm getting my answer so I think you do the vacation I wouldn't trust this great vacation day by the way this is that Iran. If you turn on the t.v. We said we didn't want to. Be in debt for the rest of our lives and at some point we got introduced to a financial piece here through our work actually they operate it and we were just on board we didn't want to be paying student loans for the next 25 years so we said we're going to live off of one income and just put everything into it as much as possible and to student loans in I would just have a goal in mind and it happened one year later you're done Yeah I think what time can courage elations I love it how's it feel to be free. It feels good and what I said sometimes I think oh man we spent all that money and put it to the government but now we're going to do the same thing and put it into savings and so it's pretty pretty cool that now that money staying with us instead of just going somewhere else you know now that you've got control of it and you're not working for someone else you didn't have another Sallie Mae living in your in your house there on campus. Thank you we're proud of you well done you guys very very well done. So somewhere around 15 or 20 years ago a lady called in from Grand Rapids and I picked up the phone and I couldn't get an award edgewise she just Machine Gun me verbally she's like I. Made up all the debt I did a bit of a debt I gotta have a garage sale I got some we got a bunch is out in front of miles I did it I'm debt free I'm not free I'm debt free and she hung up. I'm like what just happened and we started people saying that's supposed call you've ever heard I'm not gonna say anything well because it wasn't about me obviously it was about you celebrating a victory after unbelievable sacrifice to cause that victory to occur you need a place to yell you need a place to dance you need a place to smile a moment in time go I did this and so people started calling in after she did that the said hey I want to do that I want to do my debt free scream I'm like I don't even know what a difference cream is but I think we just invented it but all it is is the end of a strenuous journey the Celebrate the war is over and there's victory and so we have a victory parade a ticker tape parade Well it's always a victory dance at the end of any strenuous thing and that's what this is this is a milestone marker it's the time that you say I did it. Because you have overcome the odds you are no longer normal you are bigger average you are no longer typical and not only is this just a feeling you had inside but you have proven it with your actions just an in an appalling God out of debt in 12 months they could have taken their new job with her and said oh we're just going to be consumers instead they said we want our lives back we want to straighten up this thing we want to clean this up they're heroes they're particularly heroes to that little baby that's going to come next week and so we have a chance to be honored when you do this stuff and you when you're a hero when you save money vest and you get out of debt and I run into your Chris Hogan runs into you New say hey I'm an a.t.m. I'm an every day millionaire we're going to celebrate with you we're going to high 5 your success we don't shame Pete Best around here we don't think success is a bad thing we think victory is an excellent thing we peak we think people who decide to be victors instead of heroes and we give you a place to celebrate that we give you a place to have that milestone and celebrate it was 17000000 people. We want to solve this is the ultimate freaking high 5 right here that's what it is touchdown you know stand and look and wander off with your head hung down you do that touchdown dance baby. When you win the Super Bowl you are excited when you win the World Series the Stanley Cup you are excited. But battled and against all odds have won and so we celebrate. And those of us that are your fans we celebrate with you. And around here we are fans of our fans. Were fans of you we are fans of people like young couple right there I think there are I think there studly I think there victors and I'm so proud to live in a country generation is going to come up and be ruling things in a few years people like them they've earned the right this is that they. Which is the culmination. Which I'm back in the financial mecca right here at Studio a. Play. Christians in Tennessee I Christian welcome that I remember the show your question for Chris Ogun then me. Are you great man how can we help. Ok. I'm 23 years ago I had $45000.00 a year excluding any bonuses. Bonuses. M.r. Carney does not have a farmer in front so I'm looking at my own retirement money want to invest a couple weeks. Financial adviser they were nice smartest or pro. I would you do then them what I wanted. Told them what I wanted to. Ok what is the only one I have now they will put it you tell me I wanted. From listening to them I want to investigate girls start mutual fund 25 percent across the 4 that you wanted that you are that you and you know I'm 23 I think I have a long time today so. I think that would be one of the best. Recommendations for my retirement my view but my view you have you would say otherwise but I'm pretty predictable is what I've been saying for 30 years so why would they not which will function. Well I told them what I wanted to be and I'd go down to. 25 percent in a job. And then they wouldn't do what I actually set up an appointment with the smart that's actually. After not. Very Christian is going to be rich ugh and Christian I am proud of you because the the bottom line is somebody's got confused they were can piece money this was you had a plan and you've got dreams and you had somebody that flat out told you no that's like going to a drive through to get some food and they tell you you can't have it so what do you do you move on my friend I'm proud of you and you sit down with somebody and you walk to your dreams and get someone aligned with you they that's why we talk about the smart best to do that well that's why we talk about having the heart of a teacher because Christian obviously at 23 young years has already figured out when to go question proud of you today than I am to you've already figured out that you're in charge of your life not some other Goob and when you put your life in the hands of when you don't have a life and man I'm view just killed a man you should like that was a manly decision a grown up adult decision well doc can tell me this a 23 years old where did you learn about money. I mean I only ended a very. I just have a lot of drive I don't want to get stuck in a rut I want to I want to be able to provide and possibly retire early on but you know so you're out of debt right. That is written down to about 12 grand that will be. It was an investment on a boat that actually you that I thought. You know a lot of people. Actually going to buy you thought of and come it will probably probably be in a couple a lot that will come within the next. 3 months Ok so you're out of debt you build your emergency fund then you're about to start putting 15 percent to $45000.00 which is basically going to be a fully funded Roth at about 6000 bucks give or take your fully funded Roth or aren't you pretty close to be and sit down you're smart Mr Perot and pick out for mutual funds one growth one growth in income one aggressive growth in one international you understand how to do it because you understand it is what you want to do the smart Mr Pro should have the heart of a teacher not the heart of the arrogant boss. And would show you know your and my lawyer and I get a name and then you're going to be just fine man. The thing there is not. Doing it's that he understood his in charge that changes everything it really does Dave and at $23.00 for kind of wherewithal that's a big deal how long you're going to copy a Hogans book Everyday millionaires because I think I'm talking to one. As well. Hi William what's up. Guys it's all the staple you think. I have I think the Dave Ramsey plan since I started making monkey 40 years old. And it's going to be on today. And I'm sitting in a spot where I got a network of about 2000000 and I recently been sold an investment property to primary mortgage money didn't I don't want to but I want to have about 335 cash and I. My heart my condo up here in Colorado in the mountains to just use and enjoy but I'm trying to understand that's going to let me long term question which I think it's it's a small percentage of your net worth and you're paying cash for it Ok can you afford to let me have $2000000.00 Can you afford a $350000.00 are toy but that's exactly what it is that's exactly what it is it usually I mean it'll go up in value but we're not going to justify it on our own By can and because you've worked your butt off to be here you've lived like no one else and later you live like no one else you know why I drive the cars I drive. Them not because I care what you think. I drove like no one else not drop by I got drive like no one else you know. I thought a lot of conversations with people I try to counsel your way about deferred gratification and I think it might be a good example of that so it is your cause of it and it's a small percentage now if you told me you can buy a $1000000.00 toy out of $2000000.00 now you're ratios are starting to get off right. By my primary No 430000 which for call about it actually yeah. And it's actually I mean that's what I had and it's a little more about 620. Here's the thing my friend you have earned the right to be able to go do this and what you do and not have guilt Ok you know the people that try to chime in with an opinion it's not about them right they didn't do the work I mean they don't have a $2000000.00 net worth like you do go get your condo and enjoy it right take friends there yeah have companies that go to your church that maybe can't afford a vacation let them go stay there for free use this thing. You have that right yeah you've you've earned the right and it's a small percentage of your world and so I mean that's the thing it's a ratio you're always looking at and when you're dealing with wealth the only way you can keep your perspective is keep your ratios going is to look at ratios because some of the stuff I do if you have 200000000 dollars. Is. It just weird because normally people have to make writers write like should you do that. And the only way to look at it is look at through the lens of what's one percent of my net worth see what I've heard. It put it in perspective for people you know give yourself permission to enjoy to a degree yes to a reasonable degree right and it's not you being consumption oriented to know your you know you're probably giving a lot more than he's spending on himself most most of these 2000000 dollar millionaire Thursday joins me this half hour answering your questions he is author of the number one best selling book every day millionaires.
