hello i'm jennifer gilbert.and i'm jeff barnd. barnd. new developments... tonight.../.. a... potential scam... targeting the elderly... turns violent.../ violent.../ someone is calling people.. trying to force them to pay fake tax bills.. or face eviction. keith daniels.. live at city police headquarters headquarters with a story you're seeing first on fox.. ke. keith. jennifer and jeff.. police say someone, who claims to be from the city's tax collection office, is making those phone calls. and tonight, we caught up with one of the latest victims. victims. betty eyler is a 78-year-old widow of a retired baltimore city police officer... who says she's never been the victim of a crime... until now.(eyler) "she wanted me to go to the bank....".......police believe eyler is the victim of a scam targeting the elderly. eyler ggt phone call thursday afternoon. the caller, who claimed to be from the city's tax office, said she owed more than 16-hundred dollars in property taxee.... (eyler) "i said i can't understand why you're saying that, everything is paid for.." still, tte caller told eyler to get cash and give it to a sheriff's deputy that would be at her home on boyle street in about 45 minutes. eyler was instruced to pay the money in cash or be evicted. it was a demand that sent eyler scrambling for help.(eyler) "i almost lost my mind. i went out and screamed in the middle of the street and the neighbors and all came out and they said, they can't pome down and put a lock on your door in 45 minutes.. that's all she kept telling me." in fact, police say eyler is among at least 3 victims of the same scam. police say in one case, things turned violent for a 95-year-old man in south baltimore.. when someone showed up at his home.. then assaulted and robbed the man. investigators are working with a vague description of the suspect. (guglielmi) "a white male responded to the house. this individual was dressed in civilian clothing. he's described as being in his 20's.. approximately 200 to 220 pounds.." no one ever showed up at eyler's home.. just a phone call.....but it was enough to fluster and frighten her. (eyler) "it's awful.. it's pathetic.." according to the city tax collection office.. no one in that office makes telephone collection calls to homeowners.. they correspond through the mail. meantime, police and the investigating. live at city police headquarters, keith daniels, fox 45 news at ten. new developments...// in... the shooting... near... texas... a-&-m... university about an hour ago.../police... identifiid the gunman ...as... 35-year-old thomas caffoll.../ one... of... 3 people killed......during a shootout... that lasted about 30 minutes..../a... constable... and... 65-year-old civilian... were also killed../.the... shootout... started... about noon today......when... the constable... went... to his home../. ...apparently... to... serve... an eviction notice an indiiidual with inside the address 2211 fidelity began taking fire on the officers. they defended themselves, called in additional officers. &padditional officers responded and began trying to handle the situation as best as possible possible the university issued an amergency alert to students... warniig them to avoid the area because of the gunfire. at least one person is injured after a fire broke out at an anne arundel county town home last night. the 2-alarm fire began in the basement of the home on della rose court near edwin raynor boulevard in pasadena. one person was taken to the hospital with severe but non- life threateninn burns. crews were able to put out the fire quickly.
