Teachers inspire the girls every day to keep working on their craft. As a teacher, im gratified to be working with students on the level of colleen and lauren. She introduced us to ensemble music and group playing. I think she has always given us great feedback. Just a little bit more of a crescendo going on. Well get started today in the northeast, near washington d. C. Our Nations Capital is a constant reminder that bigger is better. There are Big Decisions being made every day in d. C. When it comes to politics. On the football field, the Washington Redskins had one of the biggest and most heralded offensive lines of all time. The hogs. Eric henderson, assistant coach of Lake Braddock high school in nearby burke, virginia, thought his sons would add to the biggness of dc area football. Eric played college ball at rhode island. His son, john, another huge individual is playing on the line at frostburg state university. Young caleb kayleb was next in line to carry on the henderson genes. But a funny thing happened. Caleb grew taller, instead of wider, and suddenly being on the o or d line wasnt going to be an option, but playing quarterback was. Caleb henderson 6 28 everyone in my family is pretty big. My mom is tall for a woman. My dad obviously is a big because he played College Football. My brother is a big guy, so i definitely think im the black sheep of the family. 6 40 Eric Henderson 24 04 i always thought based on watching him throw and watching him catch that hed be a skill position kid. When he got to high school as a 9th grader we brought him up for the varsity practices and he fit right in. He physically carries himself as a much older kid and hes always had a strong arm and hes always been a good athlete. I just knew hed be a very good football player. 24 29 since taking over the reigns as the bruins signal caller, caleb has proven his father right. He ahasa been a very good football player. Last year, he threw for 26hundred yards and 23 touchdowns as Lake Braddock ran a 5wide offense. Ate, henderson is a pocket passer, but in his senior year, he will be asked to run a little more. Learning the nuances of this offense has been tricky, but it helps to have his dad right there with him. The two of them get up every morning at 5 to work on his game. Caleb henderson 10 28 we run from 56 and then lift from 67. 10 48 it isolates mechanics and it really doesnt put any pressure on me to complete a ball. Im pretty much just throwing to my dad. He tells me what im doing wrong, what im doing right, stuff i need to work on, stuff like that. I dont like the days that i miss it. I feel like my days off if i miss it. 11 03 Eric Henderson 28 02 well do footwork drills and well just groove in his throwing and just try to work on some of the finer points. Athletically hes there. Hes a big, strong kid. He is so limited in experience as a quarterback that he needs those extra reps. As much as caleb has to focus on the field as a quarterback, its off the field where he has had more difficulty focusing. He was having trouble with his schoolwork and would often find his mind wandering while trying to read or do math. The hendersons couldnt figure it out because they knew he was motivated. He just couldnt stay focused. Finally doctors diagnosed him with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Or adhd. Along with a touch of dyslexia. That diagnosis came as a relief to the henderson family. Eric henderson 31 41 getting that diagnosis really explained some things and i think it took some pressure off of him. Where he was able to clinically step back and say, ok, its not that i lack intelligence, its because of some things i need to work on and compensate for. 32 00 Caleb Henderson 13 44 im pretty focused on my grades right now. Theyve improved quite a bit since we found out my learning disabilities and we got an iup and we took the proper steps for it. 13 53 the next step for caleb was to sort through the many colleges vying for his talent and figure out which would be the best fit. That turned out to be easy for strongarmed qb. Only one college took the time to learn not only about caleb the football player, but caleb the person as well. Which is why he committed to the university of North Carolina last spring. Caleb henderson 14 43 actually no college knew about my learning disability or went that far into detail with me or showed me that much interest except for unc. They were the only school who really asked and contacted me every day and wondering what was up and stuff. I got really close to coach anderson and i told him the whole story and everything and they were the only school who really showed me that much interest. And as far as football goes, the tar heels offense has the youngster salivating. Caleb henderson 16 08 its the type of offense where youre throwing the ball a ton and there are big plays down the field which shows off my arm. And then there are plays where i can make plays with my feet and show how athletic i am. Just like high school, college will present a new set of challenges for caleb, but he and his family feel he is ready and cant wait for him to tackle the next obstacle. Eric henderson 25 57 as a College Football player, hes going to have to go through a lot of adversity. Theres going to be challenges. That kid, in 4 years, has been through a lot and i think hes going to be a better quarterback for it. I think hes going to be a better man for it. 26 10 caleb good catch man ll take our first break. High School Athletes dream of playing in one of the nations top allstar games. Every week we feature one udent athlete whos working to get to the game heres this weeks featured player. Casey tucker, a six foot six 300 pound offensive lineman from chandler, arizona, is a big presence on the field with big dreams to match. Steve belles for casey, his dreams are real simple. Its to get a degree and then hopefully have the opportunity to play in the nfl. Casey its not just a dream. Its something that i really want to work for. My uncle, my cousin have nfl experience. Thats huge to me just to see that theyve done it. Craig tucker in his mind, theres no limit. So, he aspires to take it as far as he can. Lisa tucker i support cays dream by being supportive of him. Ive always told my kids, youre capable. Casey knows that the key to success on the field is working hard off it. Casey id say one of my strengths is how i prepare for games. My mindset is play 100 percent every game, play as well in the Fourth Quarter as you did in the first quarter. Coach casey is a 66, 67 type kid who became a beast as a junior. And as a senior, i think the sky is the limit for him. This kid knows what it takes to get to the next level. Kids look at him and kinda want to emulate what he does. Casey has a special relationship with his little brother, luke. Mom casey and luke have a special relationship, primarily because luke has special needs. Every little thing is hard for him, but it also brought us together as a team. Dad football has been a bonding relationship between casey and luke. Luke loves to watch him play. Luke i love him. Hes smart. Im really happy when i watch my Brothers Team win. Casey my little brother luke motivates me a lot. Just seeing him grow up and everything it makes me realize i have a blessing. Motivates me on and off the field, just take advantage of every opportunity i have. Ets go southeast to florida, where joe mccann met a rising star in the golf world. The weather in tampa, florida makes it a great place to live if you love golf. And terese romeo does. The junior at Freedom High School found a passion for the game soon after she first picked up a club. Terese 34 one christmas, my aunt got a me golf club, just because my entire family plays golf. They took me out and let me swing a couple times. Jeff took me out and said hey lets teach you to play golf. And i thought it was the most fun jeff leonard 49 my first interaction with terese, she was about 8 or 9 years old. She challenged me to a putting contest. I beat her, she cried, and i knew we had a very competitive young lady on our hands. Vanessa 58 one day we just put a club in her hand, she started swinging. Jeff leonard said we need to do something, so she got involved with first tee. Over the next six years, terese spent a lot of time with the first tee of tampa bay, an organization that teaches both golf and life skills to Young Players. And her attitude and talent impressedverye she came across, even professionals like dawn coejones. Dawn coejones 41 not a big gal, has to rely on r short game. Splice to 51 shes got all the shots in her bag, and shes still learning. Shes got that short game that anybody who plays golf knows that chipping and putting is key to success. Shes even developed her own fashionable superstition. 7 30 i wear two different socks every time i play golf. I was having a bad couple tournaments i guess. Splice to 7 49. One morning, i was just mad. I had a bad first round. I think i shot 78. So i grabbed different socks and i shot 72, so i like you know what, im never wearing matching socks again. But golf wasnt her only love. Terese also showed a lot of promise as a young gymnast. Unfortunately, as she entered high school, terese suffered a broken wrist competing in gymnastics, and that hampered her as a freshman. She had surgery a year later that put her sophomore season in doubt. Then she and her coach had an idea. Coach 1 39 the week after her surgery, doc said she wasnt going to be able to play full time until last two weeks. So, for her to qualify, she had to play in at least 4 matches, so i said, terese why not play with one hand just to get into the matches. And she was pretty good with one hand. Mom 3 23 as a mom, im a worry wort, i was like are you kidding me . She had to play 4 matches. Splice to 3 43 so, we said, okay, and she said okay, mom let me at it. Okay, fine, as long as this right hand doesnt touch the club, were good. And she had a ball doing it. She thought this was so much fun playing onehanded. Joe standup 10 alright, terese, im bad enough playing golf with two hands, how were you able to do it with one . Terese it took a lot of practice and determination, but after all that, i really figured out a way that i could do it. Joe 51 as far as your score, what was the big difference as far as if you were healthy versus playing with one hand . Terese well, it was higher scores, of course, i dont hit the ball very far with it or anything, but i got a couple pars out of it every once in a while, and it was really fun. After playing with one hand to qualify for postseason play, terese was cleared to play with both hands again and took first place in district and regionals. Now her coach is excited to see what she can do in two healthy season of high school golf. Coach 2 51 i think shes going to be really good, good chance to make it to state, and maybe even winning state. Jeff 4 22 division i college golf is easily within her grasp, if she wants to go beyond that, she has the skills to do that, that will be up to her. Now, when terese plays, shes not thinking about pain in her wrist, shes thinking about her mentor. Colleewalker was a professional golfer who passed away last year, and losing her has weighed heavily on terese. Terese 8 27 colleen was mentor a friend, like a second mom to me. Splice to 8 52 she was always there to bring my spirits up if they were down. If my spirits were up, shed raise them any higher than i ever thought anyone else could. She was my role model, someone i looked up to and i still look up to do this day. Terese has a lot of golf left in her life, and maybe she will make it to the lpga tour one day. But ultimately, terese wants to do what colleen did mentor Young Players through the first tee. Jeff 5 16 shed really love to teach the game at some point. She really enjoys when we have the summer camps, we have our young kids out here, the 678 year olds, and she gravitates towards them and likes teaching the game to them. Terese 9 33 i get to sit there and help the kids and teach them what others have taught me. Its so nice carrying on what a legend like colleen has taught me. Sometimes its my own words of course. Its a passion of mine. I find so much enjoyment in it. So whether its teaching the game or playing it,pect to e romeo right here in tampa, doing what she loves. In tampa, florida, im joe mccann. Thats not the only reason were here, were here to help kids and football is a great vehicle its a great hook, you can hook em with football make them come to school everyday make them do their school work and by the time theyre 161718 years old they realize thats not all that hard to do and maybe theyll learn traits that theyll take with them the rest of their lives. The world may be different than when coach nolen first got stepped on a sideline, but he finds that the kids are basically the same. They are much more hip to what goes on in the world around them, but theyre still kids and they still have the same problems still nervous about asking sally for a date theyre still looking for structure in their life they want to do the right thing they just need somebody to goad them along to it. Falcon hs football orner, safety, linebacker all four of them, i played on dline for a couple of plays when we had a guy i think he cramped up or hurt his leg. They had a special formation for me to play quarterback last year, i played slot, i played outside wide receiver, played running back everything but oline to be completely honest. Its no wonder the recruiting Services List kalen as an athlete. Its definitely a fitting description. Kalen is a big play machine, his sub 44 speed helped him get close to 2000 all purpose yards as a junior. But hes also 62 and around 225 pounds with a 375 pound bench which helped make him an all conference outside linebacker. Soundbite dylan cutkomp sr. Falcon lb fb es a man among boys. Thats the easiest way to put it. Ive grown up with him since we were little we played on the same team in the 4th grade and he was the best athlete in that league. Falcon rb lb ts fun, ive never liked playing just one position i dont think thats what football is all about i know once you get to certain stage you have to pick the position, but for now why not play everything you can. Picking a position is only half of it, as the 1 rated prospect according to rivals in the state of colorado id put him 1 in the world personally kalen has offers from over 20 programs from around the country. However he doesnt expect to decide on a college until after football season. The position i play at the next level will be a little part of how i pick a school but not too much, i want to be in a place where i love the environment, the people, the coaches, the players that im playing with. Kalen dreams of scoring touchdowns as a pro one day, and he even has two uncles that played in the nfl. Thus far hes shown the desire to put in the hard work to complement that natural ability. Its played by more than 250 Million People around the world. But not everyone has access to fields or parks, like we have in the united states. These are boys and girlsn uganda, here to celebrate this american teenager, and their love for soccer. You se like the famous quote from field of dreams, if you build it, they will come. Hundreds came to use their new soccer field. Who is this all american teen . Im someone who really likes soccer. He really does. It goes much deeper than that. Kyle weiss wants you to be able to play it to. He might build you one. Its his hobby. My hobbies are just playing any sport possible, traveling, meeting people. And soccer, of course. You see, he and his brother, garrett had this idea back in 2006. I am one of the founders, and this is kyle, the other founder of fund a field. In 2007, they made it happen. I was only 13. My brother and i we so lucky to go to the world cup in germany. Its like the craziest, most passionate event in sport. Just to go to the game was so much fun. As they started to talk to fans, they heard stories of difficulties trying to play. Many dont have the proper equipment. We wanted to send equipment back. We got new cleats every year, new soccer balls, we got back and we told all of our equally crazy soccer friends about it, and they all wanted to help. Suddenly, we had all this equipment. One of the kids was like this is really cool that were going to send equipment to people, but shouldnt we build a field first so they have somewhere good to play like we do. A short time later, they filed paperwork to start their own charity called fund a field. We build soccer fields for kids in third world countries to help them recover from traumas and move forward from conflict and give hope where they might not have any, really. This idea raise add few eyebrows. People laughed at us, and we kept raisedding more and more money. All of a sudden, we had 36,000 and became an official nonprofit. His organization started to take off. Fund a field has 30 kids that are the core directors of the organization that hold two fund raisers a year and work 50 hours at other peoples fundraisers. After building the field, kyle doesnt hire someone to build the field. He goes tohe location to help out. This is video from a 2009 trip to uganda. E went into kenya and built two fields. We bui four soccer fields in uganda. This year, we have two fields in haiti on the way, one in the democratic republic of the congo, one of the most war torn, violent regions in the world.
