gage gunshot to gun his own dog. >> reporter: good morning, patrice. this is one of stanley coleman's only dog still alive. it's a huskey named goodard. he has been staying at barcs recovering after a bad afternoon in a backyard. it call started when he tried to breakup a fight between goodard and his bullmastiff using boiling water. when that didn't work, he beat the dogs with a 2 by 4.3 as a last resort, he grabbed his shotgun and opened fire. the one dog bled to death and another dog was found starved to death insid!!starved todeath in. >> now the person who answered the door where this suspected abuse happened in west baltimore says coleman is a truck driver ask and he issoften gone for long periods of time, but someone always stops by the house to care for the dogs. it's a crime we have been seeing a lot of here in the city lately and one that is not being taken lightly. last week, baltimore was the first city in the nation to establish an animal abuse commission. megan case and what they're doing to that is coming up later this hour. the attorney for a former rotc instructor accused of having sex with a 17 years old student wants to look at one of the notes from the jury. the judge declared a mistrial in the case of charles ray moore after the jury could not come to a verdict. they deliberated for just 3 1/2 hours. attorney thomas more ow more roe note could have contained information of how the jury voted. but tte judge sealed part of the note and the attorney says that is against the rules 36 years old christopher white is charged with first-degree murder in the death of clearance myers junior. he was strangled at the north branch institution last november while serving two life sentences for setting a fire that killed his girlfriend's two young daughters. two weeks before his death, he was charged with trying to have the girl's mother killed while behind bbrs. sending sex text messages or sectiosextinging is becoming moe common. under new policy, any student caught sexting will be expelled. if it's serious enough, the principal may also call police. some parents say the new policy is too harsh, but others say they have already warned their kids about the dangers of sexting. >> i mean, first of all, the kids aren't supposed to have a cell phone at school. i tell my son, you get caught, suffer the consequences point blank. >> frederick county isn't the3 first school district in maryland to address sexting and prosecutors across the state are also considering it a crime. ii turns out there could be a strong link between excessive texting and risky behavior. a new study finds that teens who text a lot are more likely to have sex or use alcohol and drugs than kids who don't send as many messages. the study focused on high schoolers who send more thann120 text a day ask who also spend at least three hours a day on facebook. it only takes aacouple of minutes, but you can make a soldier's day. the red cross is once coordinating things. >> transportation was the biggest issue because all of the services were being held in virginia. we arranged for a bus from morgaa's bus tours to move 54 people to virginia for in baltimore county, those cars are just cruising along, northbound, southbound lanes all the way down toward the beltway. and in fact, it's going to be a nice and quiet ride on the jfx as well, taking the southbound lanes all 28 toward north avenue and eventually into the downtown region. if you're going to approaching baltimore trrveling through the tunnels, let's take a live look through the fort mchenry tunnel. nothing to get in the way just p the congestion through the toll plaza through the tubes. 95 is in the green toward the beltway. let's see how it looks near the airport, that are returning to cooler temperatures. let's take a look at hd radar and this is what you find. we have dry conditions. and the snow spinning off the new england coast. it as it does, it moves slowly southeast it makes room for high pressure to move in. that is why we have clear skies and less windy conditions, stilú a brazey day coming your way. 48 temperature in baltimore which is not too bad. 44 in d.c. and the and ffr the west the dew points upper 20s and lower 30s. that means it's dry and there's still room for the temperatures to drop before the sun comes up. a northwest breeze at 10-15 miles per hour and it gust higher from time to time. here is candace dold with a check on the traffic edge. candace, how are we looking out there. >> reporter: steve, we do have an accident to talk about on 95, a crash on the southbound lanes at mountain road. it was just reported so no significant delays as of yet, but we will continue to monitor that, because you will at least find the activity theree to get around all of that, you can use 40 instead. on 95, a little bit farther down, let's take a live look, traaeling hrough baltimore county, here it is at whitemarrh boulevard and we are delay free, northbound, and southbound lanes down toward the beltway. speaking of the beltway, so far, so good. from 95 up toward 83, 11 minutes, 54 miles per hour, 52 miles per hour with an 8-minute ride from 83 up toward 795. notice, though, the volume is increasing and it's really starting to slow down from 795 toward 95, now at 44 miles per hour with a 14 minute clip. that's a look at only dog still living, a huskey, now recovering at barcs animal shelter, known to workers there as goodard. out alive after a deedily day at coleman's backyard. it started when he was trying to breakup a fight between goodard and his bullmastiff using boil water. when that didn't work, he beat the doos with a 2 by 4. as a last resort, coleman grabbed his gunshot and opened fire. >> it's later this hour. a man just released from prison is found dead in a vacant public works crews discovered the body of darius currie inside of this home on west lexington street on saturday. police say he hhd just been released on prison on october 26th. investigators are trying to figure out who killed him. police do not have a suspect or motive. an elderly woman is in serious condition this morning after jumping out a second floor window to escape her burning house. it happened monday morning on bex hill road in woodland. neighbors called firefighters to report the flames then they found 87 years old h he edna sis lying in the bushes. she barely escaped the fire after waking up to blaring smoke detectors. >> i started for the stairs but i cooldn't find the stairs because there was too much smoke. so i went to -- >> simmons suffered a head injury. no word on what caused the fire. a tragic story out of pennsylvania. parents say their son took his life after being bullied at school. school administrators say they didn't know anything about it. according to the teen's mother, her son was picked on over the way he dressed and for his soft spoken manner. she wonders each day if his death could have been prevented. >> if the bullying would have been corrected, maybe it wouldn't have gotten to this point. maybe he wouldn't have taken his life. i don't know. >> days before the teens suicide, hii high school held an antibullying assembly for students. school officials say it was not in response to any specific problems at the high school. the proposal to build a wal-mart in the remington neighborhood is one step away from getting the go ahead. approved the plan last night. it would bring a shopping center to the site of the old anderson automotive dealership near 25th and howard street. even though the city council seems this think it's a gooo idea. many neighbors are still concerned about the potential impact on traffic and small businesses. >> i think it'ssgoing to bring some much-needed jobs, but i'm businesses that might bed andl i'm hoping that, you know, the wal-mart officials, the law officials would recognize and reach out to the small businesses and help stabilize them instead of putting them out of business. >> final zoning approval on the project is expected to happen next week. it only takes a couple of minutes, but you can make a soldier's the mall of in columbia and folks have been bringing cards here. >> reporter: can we have a picture of the cards. >> she says dear soldier, thank you for fighting for my primpings in the usa. >> reporter: she says she is thankful. she is glad that they are able to do this. you are loved and remembered and appreciated. what kind of reaction do you hear from the soldiers who get these cards. >> it's a simple mmssage, but it's one that connects them to the people back home. it lets them know that they're not forgotten and that people do appreciate the sacrifices they are doing. >> reporter: next event to do this, where is it. >> at the towson town mall at the nordstrom. from 10:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon. come out and sign a card. reporter: you will supply the cards. bit breezy today. it's nothing like it was %-then.ay with the strong winds 33 is the dew point. that is an indication that dry air is in place. it's an indication that the temperatures drop to 48 degrees before it starts to bounce back. we're in the low 40s in the outlying areas. the winds northwest at 5-10 miles per hour. %-the low pressure is moving off the southeast and the high pressure will move in. that will allow are to the winds to be less strong then they were yesterday of the diminishing winds for today and even into tomorrow, much less then. the high pressure will be sitting with a check on the traffic edge. candace. >> reporter: well, steve things are starting to pick up on the west side of the beltway. we are seeing the congestion on 695, traveling outer loop lanes near security boulevard, 31 miles per hour there. we need to talk about a few accidents. there's a new one into the newsroom, on the southbound lanes of 83. it's at belfaat road. so could always use york road or even falls road as an alternate route. we're talking about an accident on 95 in the northeast corner. it's on the southbound lanes right at mountain road. the good news about this one, it's in the clearing stages, but you can always just avoid aal of that activity ann use 40 as at alternate route. on 95, farther down let's take a live look at whitemarsh. the northbound llnes the traffic is flowing freely. it's a bit sluggish approaching the beltway on 95. a cramped ride dispurr set of on eventually toward the fort ú%henry tunnel. a live look at 195 traveliig at 95, we haven't had any police. the police investigated this thoroughly and animal control investiggted this thoroughly and now it's up on the court. >> what should happen to a person like this in terms of punishment, because that is where we said we have to try to strengthen some the laws? >> with respect to the animal cruelty laws, he has been charged with one count of animal cruelty which carries a maximum of three year sentence and multiple cruelty charges which carry a maximum of 90 day sentence. and therr's provision that the court could order him to get psychological counssling. >> how long has the task force been in place. >> it was in place for a year and it expired. we were excited that last week the mayor signed legislation to convert the task force from one year group to a standing commission. ú%w we willlreport to city council and the mayor and continue on? >> and in the time that you all have been working, even though we hear stories like this on occasion, how much progress has what are the significant changes that you all feel good about that are happening in the city? >> we had never been tracking animal abuse cases until now. that is something that has started. there's been a significant amount of training of animal enforcement officers and police officers, we want to continue that with judges and ve veterinarians and there's been a tremendous out reach toopeople to report the crime when they see it and children.ú >> there's more awareness. people are talking about it and willing to get involved and call -olice when they see things like this. >> they recognize that link between animal abuse is how man violence and they're starting to get it? >> that has beennthe correlation. if this man is willing to pick up a shotgun and kill his own dog, who is road on the southbound lanes. you will find that all the way up toward the activity. you will want to use york road or even falls road as the alternate route. once you approach the beltway from 83 up toward 795, it's in the green, but quickly increasing, 9 minutes right now 47 miles per hour. and well, the west side of the beltway, from 795 down toward 95, it's slow go, 17 minutes, 36 miles per hour there. doing much better on 95 through baltimore from the fort mc mchenry tunnel, toward the beltway, 8 minutes at 55 miles per hour. that's a look at the morning travels. patrice, back over to person who answered the door where the suspected abuse happened at est baltimore. says that coleman is a truck driver and is gone for a long period of time, but someone stops by the house and takes care of the dog. it's a crime that we have been seeing in the cityylately. just last week baltimore became the first city in the u.s. to establish an animal abuse commission. an elderly woman is in serious condition this morning after jumping out a second store window to escape her burning house o. neighbors called firefighters to report the flames and then they found 76 years ld edna simmons lying in the bushes. she suffered a head injury. no word on what caused the fire. almost a decade after making headlines for being kidnaaped in her teens, elizabeth smart takes the stand against hhr accused captor. brian david mitchell is on trial charged with kidnapping elizabeth in 2002 and holding her captive for nine months. they were arried in a hasty sermon other and hh raped her every day see the rain on sunday night, maybe a shower then if anything at all. the chances are that it will 65 degrees for the high temperature at the eastern shore. note the winds higher than elsewhere. 1020 windy. 10-15-mile-an-hour winds gusting we will enjoy plenty of sunshine with a few clouds in. that's for hagerstown and really and slightly to the west of there as you get into the higher elevations, though. high temperatures may only be in the low 40s. 41 for the low tonight under mainly clear skies. we will stay near 60 degrees pretty much through the week will it's upper 50s to near 60. you're looking at plenty of sunshine through most of thh week, veterans day, and friday and saturday, too. and maybe a late shower as i mentioned overnight saturday and sunday, but just an outside chance of harford road only 11 miles per hour. you will find the delay. on the jfx, the congested ride ú%ere as well, 30 miles per hour road. let's talk about 83 at northern baltimmre county in fact. it's because of appear accident on the southbound lanes. you will find it at belfast road. now the good news is that it's finally in its cleaaing stages but the damage is done and we do have delays leading up toward all of the activity. you could always use falls road or york road as the alternate routee once you get past all of that and make the check on the beltway. let's takeea live look at pikeville, that is going to be a bit of a cramped ride and even the inner loop stretch as well up toward the jfx. that is the usual deal, though. as you go around the bend on 695, at liberty road, checking out the outer loop lanes, you ccn see a straight stack of cars outer -- bridges on the outer loop direction. seeing the cramped ride the ordinary deal from owings mills heading on the southbound lanes down toward the beltway. and in carroll county an reported. it's a crash involving a bus, no passengers are on board, so you will find the activity on route 32 at washington lane. better as well toward baltimore. 8 minutes at 53 miles per hour and only 54 miles er hour ith a 9-minute drive on southbound 895 from the harbor tunnel all the way toward 95. that's a look at the morning travels. patrice and megan over to you. a west baltimore man faces more than a dozen counts of animal abuse after police say he used a 12-gage shotgun to shoot his dog. he was trying to breakup a fight between his huskey and bus mass- bullmastiff using boiling water. when that didn't work, he used 2 by 4. as a last resort he took his gunshot and opened fire. the mastiff did bled too death. a 3rd dog was found starved to death inside of a crate. >> with why would ou have the animals if this is the way you're going to treat them? >> a person who answered the door where the suspected abuse happened says colemaa is a truck driver and is often gone for a long period of time but sommone always stops by the house tt take care of the dogs. the attornny for a former rotc
