>> good. thank you. >> you're on your first book tour. everybody is fascinated by your story, are you a little surprised? >> i'm hopeful that you know, that they are gonna get something out of it for sure. >> a lot of people as cath was pointing out knew you were a single mom. they didn't know the hardships along the way, the sexual abuse, the suicide attempt. somehow you ended up giving birth to the most famous person on the planet. it is interesting to know people are reading your words out there. >> excited to hear reactions, a few people that read it really inspired them. >> so that's why i wrote it. just to know that you don't have to stay stuck in your pain. and i know other people's stories helped me. >> justin wrote the forward, we know that but you told me when we first got together that you tried tell him almost all of this stuff before you decided to write the book. is there anything now that you've shared in that book that he's upset about or you wish you may be had held back? are you still feeling really good about it? >> not that i know of. he read the book and he wrote the forward and he has been super supportive, i know it was hard for him to read some painful parts. but he's been really supportive. >> you can actually see your bond in the piece you two did together. it was when he was singing to you, it was a small little tiny portion of the spot but it really touched so many people. people were tearing up watching it. i think we have a little clip of that. let's watch that. ♪ when you're broken in two let my love take you higher and i will help you ♪ . >> how does it feel hearing that watching that? >> oh, who doesn't want somebody singing to them, especially your own child? oh, he's just amazing. >> we will just keep watching it. >> it's -- i have an amazing son. >> you told the story and kath was telling me about this at the dream center, you went and spoke to some women who may have been in your similar situation, they didn't know you were justin bieber's mom at the time. tell us about that. >> well, i had been to the dream center once before and i wanted to take a tour of it because i was so inspired by it and just seeing the different parts of it you know, women's recovery, men's recovery, sex trafficking, teen discipleship, sex trafficking, they just have all these amazing parts of it. >> extraordinary. >> i went there on a tour matthew barnett the founder and pastor there, he just introduced me to the women's recovery center as -- as his friend patty. >> mm-hmm. >> and so they had -- there was three of them and they each -- there was a whole bunch of them but three of them told their story and shared a bit of their story and there they were really moving, painful stories and when they were done, they thanked me for coming and they were going to go about their day. and i said, could i share a bit of -- a bit of my story with you guys? and they said, sure. and so, you know, i went into how i was abandoned, you know, when i was younger and the abuse and the suicide attempt and all that stuff and when i got through telling them how i had come through it, i just said and now i stand before you here as justin bieber's mom. >> wow. >> and they were just so moved. not because -- i don't think they cared who justin bieber was, but just to know that there's hope, you know? >> and you found that hope through a friend who taught you that god loved you, right? and you didn't think anybody could really love you. we only have a little bit of time left. tell us about that. >> about the man? [ cheers and applause ] >> we're back with more "today" on this winesday wednesday. sarah is in knoxville at the university of tennessee, a very spirited crowd of volunteers they like to call themselves. >> sarah's third stop we hit the campuses of the six finalists in our college challenge. the other schools are syracuse, the ohio state, brandeis, university of south florida tampa and creighton. so go right now, if you can, vote for your favorite school, klgandhoda.com and we are going to visit the winner in october. >> one of our favorites around here is guiliana rancic. last year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer but what began as the worst year of her life turned out to be one of the best, maybe the best. >> she is now a proud mom of edward duke rancic born on august 29th. >> so excited. >> good to see you, guiliana. >> where is duke? >> he is home with papa bill. probably watching right now. hey guys, love you. >> how sweet. >> yeah, so, he is just a cutie pie but he's three weeks old so we can't travel with him. >> of course. >> how is being a new mom, how has it just been? >> everyone is going to tell you it is going to be incredible it is beyond. it is beyond words. i mean, look at him i just want to just -- i don't know what i want to do to him but i love him so much. >> you wonder what love was until you have -- >> it's a different type of love. it really is. and it's just so true, motherhood is the greatest job in the world. it is the greatest honor in the world. >> you ended up freezing eggs? >> yeah. >> what you guys did after you found out? >> we did i was going through ivf, i found out i had breast cancer, we had to kind of freeze the eggs and figure out our plan and once i went through my surgeries and i could kind of think straight again that is when we moved ahead with the surrogate because i'm on medication right now for the next four and a half years. >> the tamoxifen? >> tamoxifen. >> sure. right. >> not fun. >> you don't have any of the bad side effects? >> i don't. i'm very, very fortunate i don't have the side effects so far, so good it is funny, i don't look at it as oh, i'm taking a drug every night, which kind of did at the beginning, now i look at it as positive, i'm taking something that could save my life. and i think that changes things a little bit. >> now you have even more reason to want to have a long life. >> absolutely. >> want to see every milestone in little duke's life. >> i appreciate it now. >> you want women, young girls, to make sure they are very aware of breast cancer. tell us about that. >> absolutely. hoda, you know this. >> yeah. >> what is unbelievable about breast cancer is if you find it early you have a 98% survival rate. five-year survival rate. that's huge! >> that is enormous. >> when i heard i had breast cancer, i immediately thought death sentence. i thought, oh, my god, i can't believe i'm gonna die and if you find it early you can survive and you have a high chance of survival. so the key is early detection. it is finding it early. >> tell the ladies what they need to do. >> okay. well, tomorrow is do it for the girls day, which is very exciting so we are rallying women everywhere, give yourself a self-exam in the shower, wherever you want it takes 30 seconds. i can do it. i will do it for anyone in the studio today. they're like no thanks. but it's so easy to do. takes 30 seconds. it can save your life. >> get your mammograms. >> talk to your doctor, what am i supposed to be doing. >> this one lit from inside or what? >> really? i'm happy? >> you're lit all the way around. >> is it obvious? >> we love you. >> so happy for you. >> thank you. i love being here. thank you. >> he has come a long way since his brat pack days. >> still pretty good looking, 80s heartthrob andrew mccarthy is here right after this. >> no they are very sweet, those movies hold up. i never would have thought it at the time. it's amazing really. but i mean, i was looking that the one thing from "st. elmo's fire" and i remember that incident like it was yesterday, doing that take. yeah. >> it is funny, you were part of the brat pack but you, yourself, are a loner. >> a little more solitary than that. one of those strange ironies i was lumped in. now it's come to represent a really affectionate thing, the brat pack. it's a nice thing. >> you had an experience on the subway the other night. >> i did. i was on the subway. a woman was kind of looking at me. i thought oh, great. i knew i had a long way to go. finally she got up and kind of smiled at me. i'm smiling back politely hoping to crawl under the car. she got up and she said, "you know, my husband just died two months ago. this is the first time i've smiled." and it just program my heart. we ended up hugging each other on the subway car. >> you mean something to people. >> really those movies really touched something in a generation of people that. had a big effect on me. >> let's talk about your book a little bit. >> yeah. >> some people are calling it sort of the "eat, pray you love" for guys, the male set. >> i don't know if it is for guys but it is from the male perspective. that's nice compliment. i thought that was a terrific book it is sort of an internal journey played now the exotic locations. >> you said it started out when would you go on these sets to work, exotic locations, instead of hanging out with the crew or cast or something, would you sort o stay in that little wherever you were and go explore off by yourself. >> yeah i just found myself meandering off, movies would end, i would stay and continue traveling for longer and longer and i began eventually just traveling for travel sake and then i began to write about it for magazines and stuff. >> you win awards. >> go figure. >> go figure. >> the big thing, too you had trouble with relationships, couldn't figure out how to make them stick and you finally did. so, what was the answer there? >> you know, i figured things out on the road. some people go to therapy or have wine together. >> careful. >> it works. >> it works. >> for me, figuring stuff out happens when i'm far away from home. i had this dilemma. i love this person and yet i have this other part of me that just wants to go. so how do i reconcile? >> how about taking her with you. >> that happens sometimes. >> here hears an idea. >> haven't thought of that one, kathy. it was sort of that reconciling those two aspects of myself. that push me, pull you, i love you, i got to go syndrome. >> you are happy now right?
