it was good. >> anyway, coming up, a lot of talk about the last 24 hours, the dow dropping 512 points on thursday. this morning all the talk is about jobs, jobs, jobs. >> that's right. the jobs report is coming out this morning. a lot of americans are taking a close look at that. of course we're worried about what the state of the economy is and where is it going. we'll have that for you coming up. >> of course, a time to take a lot out of you but also takes a lot out of you is not getting enough sleep. have you ever had that feeling you've got ven eight hours of sleep and you're still exhausted? we're going to look at the medical reasons behind that and, get this, women apparently complain four times more than men about being exhausted. i wonder why. >> exhausted by men. >> i wonder why. >> and, you know, comfort food. we all sometimes turn to it for different reasons. what is really driving you to indulge, why do you crave certain kinds of food? and we're going to try to help you get it more under control. i always like to say if loving mac and cheese is wrong, i don't want to be right. let's go inside. natalie is at the news desk. >> there is a bright spot today after a week of dismal economic news. hiring picked up last month with workers hiring $117,000 jobs in july. it brought the jobs rate from 9.1% to 9.1%. to keep it in context, let's check in with cnbc senior economics reporter steve lease m leisman. >> we were up 117,000, and a lot of that, while it was weaker than it should have been because the government is laying off 39,000 and 37,000. we had positive revisions upward to the prior month. so all of this is pretty good news. i think the market is going to feel like it dodged a bullet today with the unemployment rate ticking down to 9.1%. we were really worried about another recession here. these kind of numbers are together with upward revision of 60,000 to the prior month suggesting that maybe we're not so fast falling off a cliff into a recession, natalie. >> all right. good news in all of this economic turmoil we've been seeing. thanks so much. extreme heat is once again pi baking the south with a dozen states with heat advisories. dallas tops 100 degrees thursday for the 41st day in a row. the demand for power to run air conditioners and fans have utility companies warning that wide spread outages are possible today. we're going to have more on this in a live report coming up. former beatle paul mccartney says he plans to contact police claiming he may be yet another victim of the british phone hacking scandal. his ex-wife heather mills told the bbc she had been con fronted by a journalist with details of a phone message left by mccartney in 2001. mccartney called the scandal horrendous invasion of privacy. nasa says it has found the strongest evidence yet there is water flowing on mars. pictures taken by the mars orbiter show long streeks resembling streams running down the walls of craters during the martian spring. if it is water scientists believe it is very salty. otherwise it would freeze permanently during the brutal martian winters. here on this planet, an awesome site as well as rivers of glowing lava started flowing from a volcano in hawaii. it flows entirely in a national park and poses no hazard for residents there and a big draw for tourists. they're cute when they're little, but for a man in romania his pet bengal tiger got too big to keep at home. his human owner bottle fed him and slept side by side with the feline until wildlife officials found out and took the tiger away. local zoo has apparently volunteered to give alex a more tiger-appropriate home of his own. it is now five minutes past the hour. let's go back outside once again to matt, ann, and tamron. >> thanks, natalie. >> you got weather to talk about, it's the weekend coming up. we want to get all the details. >> we're talking about the heat, of course. and, of course, tropical storm emily, that has now dissipated. it's good news. kind of mess. it's mostly dropping a lot of rain throughout the caribbean where they don't need it. especially in haiti. days over 100 degrees. dallas is at 41. shreveport, 33. 38 in wichita. you can see right now the forecast for highs, san angelo today, 107, 104, little rock, 107 shreveport. add the humidity in, and feel like 112 in dallas, 110 in little rock, 108 in san angelo. you can see right now a big area of high pressure and warm moist air spreads across the south. by the time we get to monday, cooler dryer air filters in canada and that pool of warm moist air kind of swrirhrinks. our friends in texas, arkansas, oklahoma, parts of louisiana still going to be in those triple digits. a lot of big maroon 5 fans right here. >> in little haze in the atmosphere. today, a lot of sunshine. not like yesterday, with all those clouds. >> and that's your latest weather. natalie? >> thank you, al. this morning on "today's" health, the real reason you may be tired. if you're getting enough sleep but still waking up exhausted there may be a concrete medical reason behind that tired feeling. dr. raj is a "today" contributor and medical editor at "health" magazine. "health" magazine says that women are four times more tired than men. and, of course, a lot of things contributing to it. could be medical reasons behind it. >> we're not talking at lack of sleep because of the kids or worry. >> multi-tasking. >> exactly. we have real medical conditions that could cause it. >> let's take a look first. indicator could be your thyroid is out of whack. >> this is a very big one for women. auto immune condition usually. your thyroid is a gland located in your neck. it really regulates your hormones, metabolism. when it's underactive fatigue is the number one symptom. there are other things as well like constipation, feeling cold, dry skin. this is something the doctor can check with a simple blood test and may require a medication, replacement of that thyroid hormone. it will boost your energy level back up. >> celiac disease could be another culprit. explain what that is. >> this is something -- i'm a gastroenterologist. 133 americans have it. allergy to approaching in rye and barley called glute ten. when you're eating those foods you can develop bloating, diarrhea. one of the main symptoms is fatigue. it may be your only symptom. check with a blood test. you may need to have been a actually have a test where a tube is inserted in your stomach. the treatment is to avoid those foods. glut gluten-free diet. >> fatigue could be a sign of heart disease. i didn't know that. >> right. it's very important for women, you know, we don't often have the same typical symptoms that men do of chest pain. fatigue often precedes a heart attack in women. and it can be another form of heart disease like congestive heart failure. you need to talk to your doctor about getting an ekg or echocardiogram which will check the entire heart and valves. >> also, diabetes could be another symptom of sleepiness. >> what happened with diabetes, instead of your cells using tin glucose for energy it spills out into your blood. you're not able to get the energy you need. being fatigue is a common symptom of diabetes. and frequent urination is a symptom so you're waking up a lot at night. you need to treat diabetes. it can lead to many long-term complications. >> exhaustion could be a sign of depression. >> sometimes people don't feel -- or not aware of the typical sadness or hopelessness. they feel tired because they may be in denial of the emotional stuff. if they are feeling fatigued, take stock, are you happy what w. what's going on in your life because you could be suffering from depression and therapy and maybe antidepressants can help. >> vitamin deficiency. one of the common deficiencies is vitamin d. a lot of people not getting enough vitamin d. >> we're so careful about the sun these days because of skin cancer, which is great, but one of the side effects is we may not be getting enough vitamin d. a symptom is feeling tired. there are other symptoms as well. we're not aware of the long-term effects of a deficiency in vitamin d. these days we do have sun around. get the 10 or 15 minutes. >> get a little bit of time out there and the supplements. also, low b-12 levels could play a well. >> vitamin b-12 is important in terms of preventing anemia and neurologic function. there are people who are deficient, especially vegetarians. if you are feeling fatigue, it's a simple blood stes your doctor can check for. if you need supplementation you can get it in pill or injection form. >> another thing you say you should do iscabinet. >> one of the common side effects of many drugs is fatigue. a lot of people know about the antihistamine. >> benadryls and all of that that can knock you out. >> there are ones like antidepressants. many of them can cause fatigue as well as high blood pressure medicine. if you started a new medicine and you're feeling fatigue, talk to your doctor. it may require a change in the dose or changing the medicine all together. >> dr. raj, as always, a wealth of information. thank you so much. >> thank you. coming up next, comfort foods to boost your mood? i'm talking. what is that? it burns! it's singeing me! woman: i can't see! it's the sun. get out of the office more often with chili's $6 lunch break combos, featuring texas toast half sandwiches. ♪ chili's lunch break combos ♪ this morning on eat smart today, the psychology behind comfort foods. now, we all know grabbing a bar of chocolate or a bag of chips can improve our mood. a recent study confirms that. how do you recognize when you're overdoing it, besides the fact that your pants are getting tight. dr. gayle is a contributor. nice to see you. >> nice to be here. >> in and of itself, there's nothing wrong with comfort foods. >> comfort foods get a bad rap. people talk about gaining weight, but in general, actually comfort foods can boost your mood and we should falk about why. and it's okay to use them for that purpose. >> there's actually a biology to these comfort fooded. first of all, we've got a list of them. let's start off with high-calorie comfort food. >> interesting study that looked at a rat and took away their tastes. they found that even with unability to taste it, the sweetness, they still went to the high-calorie foods which activates certain regions of their brain. their brain wants high calorie foods. it minimizes stress. so in stressful times we need high calorie foods to run away from whatever we need to run away from. >> salty foods, what triggers that? >> interestingly, it waves a hormone called oxytosin. it's the hormone of bonding. it makes us feel closer to people, more social. it might be romantic or nonromantic. but loneliness is a big source of stress and a reason that people reach out for comfort foods. salty foods do make you feel more connected to people. >> what about the sweet foods? >> actually starchy foods, fatty foods, sweet foods, they all actually boost serotonin which is a kem chemical, antidepressant, literally, the antidepressants that we prescribe so often do change as well. they act in a certain way temporarily a little bit like an antidepressant. >> i know for myself, i would love to get a bag of -- big bag of fries, super size fries, a hot dog or a hamburger, something like that. and you feel great while you're eating it. almost immediately afterwarded. and then i would crash and feel horribly guilty. >> some of that is psychological. i think what's important to know is what informs your particular comfort foods, you named yours. it's biology but also the psychology. so memories that are attached to wonderful times. it may be what your mother gave you when you sought comfort or it may be a fun and lovely time, you associate that memory. now, that's a great thing. on the other hand, because we're pleasuring ourselves, because it makes us feel better, we might feel a little ashamed that we're kind of stuffing our face to try and feel better. that guilt afterwards, like that wasn't good for us or we're doing something just to make ourselves feel nice. >> it's a vicious cycle. >> a vicious cycle. >> eat, feel bad about it and then eat to feel better about it. before i knew, boom. >> that's when, al, you know you're not using comfort foods the right way. every once in a while if you're feeling a little alone, a little stressed and you want to use it, that's fine. there's a point where you can cross the threshold, where you get into a loop of doing it, feeling bad, doing it, feeling bad. on goingly feeling bad, comfort foods won't fix that. >> what is stressing you. >> what is stressing you and can you minimize that stress? can you take that stress out of your life another way besides eating? can you use the comfort food and be okay or do you have to do it over and over again? another thing you should do if you have an ongoing stressor, use other coping skills. exercise is a good one and a healthier one. >> i'm running now, just so i can eat. >> well, you know what? you run so you can eat, but you actually the running probably makes you need to eat less because you feel good from running. so there are other ways to feel good and destress yourself. and honestly, if you're feeling bad all the time and doing this all the time you might need to see a therapist because people sometimes come in to see me because they're really caught in a loop of eating all the time, emotionally essentially eating. >> and the trigger foods. how close are trigger foods to comfort foods, can they be the same thing?
