>> what we saw today was markets in japan coming back. you will see more volatility. we are not just watching japan. we're watching what's going on in the middle east. we're watching the housing market here in the united states and so it's a really good reason that you put your long-term money into the stock market. you can ride those ups and downs out. if you have short-term money it doesn't belong there. >> stay the course if you're in it for the long haul. okay. let's get to our great questions. we have a caller on the line. holly from california. good morning. what's your question for the panel? >> caller: good morning, everyone. my question is i suspect i will be laid off soon. i know that i will receive a severance package. i estimate that it will be about $10,000. we have $17,000 in credit card debt along with two car payments, a mortgage and two teenage kids. should i apply all of the severance to the credit cards? it has an apr of 12% and we do not have anything in savings. >> holly, do you know when the next round of layoffs may happen? i'm sorry to hear that. >> no. it could be sometime this year. it could be in a couple of months or in the next eight months. >> so, jean, holly has a couple of months to prepare. that's key. >> it's really key. no, holholly, don't take all th savings and give it to credit card debt. you may need to live on that savings. start now and save as much as you can. put additional money to pay down the credit card debt, but keep the savings up. you're really lucky that you know this may come down the road. you may want to just start looking for a swrjob. >> caller: i have. >> it's not easy out there. good luck. next an e-mail question from cindy who writes, my grandson is a sophomore in high school. where can we find grants and scholarships for college? >> first of all, congratulations. it is great to start early looking for scholarships and grants. there is a lot of money out there. the key thing to remember is you should not pay money to find money. if you're paying money it's probably a scam. there are a couple great websites to check out. fastweb.com and the college board has a great website where you can find grantings and scholarship money. >> we all rely on mark cantrowicz. he just published a new e book. it's like $6. secrets to getting scholarships. so i would go there. >> you don't have to be a straight-a student. you can be a great student who wants to go to college. there are tons of scholarships for everybody. don't assume you won't qualify. >> now to skype for garrett from new jersey joining us. good morning to you. what's your question for the ladies? >> good morning. my question is i'm currently on dialysis. my wife and i live on one income. because of that we have racked up credit card debt and we worked hard to get that down. we have we have stopped saving to get that paid. we are down to about $7,000 in credit card debt beyou have $10,000 between the money market, the roth ira and savings. my question would be because of our situation would it be advisable to take the $7,000 and pay it off? >> he has a great condition given his medical condition. >> congratulations for paying down the debt as well as you can. do not touch your savings. i think you answered the question. you said you havele health concerns. i can sense that you're telling me youle feel sometimes that money is tight in this situation. the savings is for an emergency. go back to the credit card statements. there is disclosure that they have to tell you what to pay every month to be out of debt on that card in three years' time or less. that may be more aggressive than you are used to but it's a good way to visualize. three years is tangible. the closer you can get to paying off the debt in three years, i think that's the solution. do not touch your savings. you may need it. that's for you. you deserve that savings. >> you need it for emergencies and especially given the medical situation. next we have a caller on the line. angie from york, pennsylvania. good morning. >> good morning. >> what wouldle you like to ask the ladies? >> my husband and i would like to move into a bigger house with more land attached to it. we are in our mid 30s. we make over $100,000 per year and have very little debt. we bought our house eight years ago for $121,000. we owe $81,000 on it now. we both have 401-ks equalling $100,000 and $20,000 in savings. we're thinking we'll have to spend between $275,000 and $300,000 to get the house we want. >> right. >> let's see what our ladies advise. jean? or if we switch you to another team would that make a difference? you can also then go one step more and try looking for solutions because you're trying to get your kid over the slump. >> you want your kid to share in the solution. >> you do. number one, look at yourself and say, are my expectations in line?
