she'll answer all of your questions coming up. also shopping for a new car. the cash for clunkers program is now over but if you're looking for ways to save and still drive away in a brand-new car, we have a road map for savings, up to thousands of dollars in some cases. we'll get an inside look at how dealers do business, an informed shopper. >> helps to do your research. if you're like me and do anythi everything last-minute, we'll have great recipes for your guests. but right now want to turn it over to amy robach for a look at latest headlines, in for ann this morning. good morning, everyone. labor day is a working holiday for president barack obama. he speaks today in ohio at the annual afl-cio labor day picnic. his remarks are expected to touch on health care in advance of a wednesday night address to congress on his proposed overhaul. on tuesday, obama will speak to american children as they begin the school year. more tough talk today on the nuclear debate from iran's president mahmoud ahmadinejad. he says iran will neither stop its nuclear development program, nor negotiate over what he calls its nuclear rights. a dramatic rescue in the philippines where a crowded ferry turned on to its side sunday and then sank. at least nine people died. but amazingly, almost 1,000 were rescued by other boats in the area, including a survivor found today after drifting 30 hours at sea. thousands of people turned out sunday in south lake tahoe, california for a parade to celebrate the return of jaycee lee dugard almost two decades after she was kidnapped. more now from nbc's lee cowan. >> reporter: pink balloons. jaycee dugard's favorite color. found their way skyward floating high above the town where 18 years ago jaycee disappeared. many feared forever. but now -- >> elation. it was wonderful. i don't think in my wildest dreams i ever thought we would be having this kind of a parade. it's a wonderful moment. lots of joy. >> reporter: as many as 2,000 people joined in. >> l-o-v-e we love we love jaycee. >> reporter: as for local law enforcement who spent years trying tro try ing to track jaycee down -- >> complacency is not an option anymore. any time there is hope, we have to keep hope alive. >> reporter: the hope is that phillip garrido, the convicted sex offender and convicted rapist accused of holding her captive come to justice. he and his wife face a laundry list of charges to which they've pleaded not guilty. an investigator familiar with the case says garrido's wife told investigators they picked out jaycee specifically because she looked cute and then followed her to the bus stop the following morning. jaycee's 18-year ordeal is unimaginable to everyone except an unfortunate few. one of them is shawn hornbeck, the missouri boy kidnapped back in 2002 and forced to live with his captor for more than four years. in an interview with "people" magazine, he predicts dugard is going through much of what he did, including guilt that she didn't try to escape. you're brain washed, he told the magazine. it's as simple as that. both phillip garrido and his wife nancy are being held without bail, due back in court as early as next week. last time they were seen in public she sobbed while garrido himself sat expressionless. lee cowan, nbc news, los angeles. a white glove michael jackson tossed to a fan 13 years ago has brought big bucks at auction. jackson's white sequined glove sold for more than $48,000 sunday in australia which the singer toured in 1996. the winning bidder is the hard rock hotel and casino in las vegas. it is the first of many jackson gloves to be auctioned off. it is now coming up on five minutes past the hour. let's head back outside to natalie and lester. >> that's matt lauer's glove, we were saying. he tried it on. >> glad you explained that. we want to get another check of the weather. al's off, stephanie abrams from the weather channel is good enough to be with us today. >> good morning. i found the birthday section on the plaza today. we have a 4-year-old here, a sweet 16. we have these girls turning 9 and this one was born labor day 1990 -- this one, too! lots of birthdays here. let's have a look at the forecast for the day today. where are we going to see messy weather? >> good morning, joy. hi. i watch the show all the time. i love your segments. they are so interesting. my question is, i recently read that exercising is not effective for weight loss. is it true? >> first of all, thanks for watching. hey, nancy. >> hi. >> in theory, exercise should help you lose weight. because it enables us to burn calories. but, unfortunately, without significantly curbing your food intake, exercise alone will not knock off the pounds and here's why. if you could imagine, by moderately walking for -- at a moderate pace for about an hour, you'll burn about 250 calories. it only takes a couple of minutes to gobble down one or two handfuls of trail mix or a scoop of rich ice cream which is the equivalent of 250 calories. so you can undo all that hard work at the gym in a flash. but that doesn't mean that you should hang up your sneakers because exercise offers scores of health benefits. for example, it puts you in a positive mind set so you make smart food choices. research shows that it helps people to maintain their weight long-term after you finally hit your goal. most importantly, it reduces the risk for heart disease and diabetes and cancer, and it boosts your immune system and your mood. to nancy and all our viewers, walk on. >> all right. we also want to get to a couple e-mails, joy. this comes from carol in massachusetts. "i used to be a heavy drinker but stopped years ago. i found that after giving up alcohol my sugar cravings spiked. what's the reason for my sugar cravings?" >> well, carol, congratulations for getting rid of the bad habit. i'm not surprised she has sugar cravings because what alcohol does is it temporarily gives you a surge of a brain chemical sar t atonin is a mood-boosting effect. her brain is looking for other ways to get the surge, and carbs and sugar does the same -- >> what can she do to curb those cravings? >> instead of going for junk food and sugary things, go for high-quality indict-friendly carbs like cherry tomatoes, apples, bananas, even oatmeal sprinkled with cinnamon and raisins will do the exact same trick. >> a phone call from lauren in florida, good morning. >> hi, joy. my question is that i've heard a lot that pomegranate and pomegranate juice is really healthy. i want to know if it is true or all a lot of hype. >> lauren, that's a great question. pomegranates are incredibly healthy, but that said, wow, they have been hyped up like crazy. here's what we know. the research shows that they have an impressive amount of antioxidants. pomegranates have been shown to slow the progression of prostate cancer and they are very, very healthy for our arteries. so it is good for our overall heart health. but i say, all fruit is healthy. so take advantage of everything, befriend your local farmer, visit the farmer's markets, buy things that are in season and on sale. and if you love pomegranates, like i said, they're terrific, but try to eat the whole fruit versus drinking a lot of the juice. pomegranate juice, like other juice, is loaded with sugar and calories. >> i was always told don't drink your calories. eat the fruit, don't drink the fruit. >> for people that just love the juice, at least try to cut it with water or seltzer. >> probably not great in a margarita either. >> another segment, amy. >> all right. let's move on to the next e-mail question. this is parker in new jersey. he wrote in and asks, "i love beef. is it really so bad to eat red meat and what's your weekly recommendation?" >> well, there are a few major cons for eating a lot of red meat. red meat means beef, pork and lamb. first we know that it's typically filled with a lot of the artery-clogging saturated fat, which elevates the bad cholesterol. that's the ldl. remember "l" for lousy. it elevates try giiglycerides s is not great for heart disease. it is also linked to colorectal cancer, gal stones and gout. you can enjoy red meat, just follow three simple rules -- one, limit your intake to no more than two to three meals per week. two, go for lean cuts. look for words like loin and round, sur loirloin, round. try some of the game meats, ostrich, buffalo, venison. they're typically much leaner than your standard selections of beef. >> a last e-mail from karen in california. >> still a good time to go to the dealers. they're dying for your business. car sales overall are way down so the dealers really want some traffic. >> they're willing to make a deal. and women in particular tend to buy half the cars these days so that's an interesting fact. you say the first thing to do when you go to the dealership is to narrow your choices. >> basically what you want, you don't want to just fall in love with one car. if you're in the market for a family sedan, say look at the honda accord, the camry, the ford fusion. you don't paint yourself into a corner. if you go to the dealer say, i got to have that car, that's the one, then they've got you. if you're not getting any satisfaction from the negotiations, say i'm going to go to plan b. >> i'm in the market as well. if you go on to some of the websites for these dealerships they allow you to compare other models. that's a good way to compare if you want to do your leg work first off. >> do all your research. >> next, figure out the value. we're talking about two things -- the value that the amount of the dealer paid for the car that you're thinking of buyi buying, as well as the trade-in value of the car you're bringing in. >> face it, dealers aren't in the business for charity. but the question you want to know is how much did the dealer pay for the car. go to "consumer reports," kelly blue book. basically you need to start negotiations, bargain up from the dealer's cost, not down from the sticker. >> how much negotiating room is there usually off the value, the price tag that you see? >> in general, rule of thumb is if you can get 2% to 4% above the dealer cost, that's considered a pretty good deal. however, if the price of gas spikes up to $4 a gallon, there will be a line of people outside all the dealerships that sell the most fuel-efficient cars. in that case you probably won't have any negotiating room. >> you put emphasis also on taking test drives but you say take long test drives, not just the around the block kind of test drive. >> a lot of car sales people have a preferred route that they like to go on. however, you have every right to say to the person, listen, i'm going to drive this car for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, see what it is like on the highway, on a bumpy road, is it noisy, for example, do i fit in the seat, are the controls easy, do i have good vision all the way around. it involves you being comfortable in the car because you're going to pay for this for a few years so you got to get something you like. >> another thing you point out, an important thing, also check out the situation for children in the back seat, make sure there is enough room but also for your children's car seats. i know this is something that having a second child i didn't really think about until i plugged both my car seats in and i've got in room in the back seat. >> it is a big deal. especially as a result of the cash for clunkers, a lot of people are saying we need to downsize, get a smaller car, spend less money on gas so we'll go something smaller. when you go shopping, have somebody watch the kids, for example, it is hard to car shop when you have's got your kids and they're tired -- >> can we go now? >> yeah. so you bring the car seats with you and install them in the back seats. is there enough room behind like the driver's seat and the back seat so that you can move the car seats in and out and all that stuff. >> the other thing is you say arrange for financing beforehand. a lot of people make the mistake of getting to the dealership room, like okay, i'm ready to make a deal, then they have to work out the actual money situation. >> "consumer reports" has always said do your homework. this is part of it. not only do you have to figure out how much the car will cost you, but go to your bank, credit union, get the best rates for financing. then you can even go to the dealer and say can you beat this rate? >> next to seal the deal, you have to go to the dealership. this is where you say you have to beware of the mark-up. what should you watch out for? >> one of the ways dealerships make money -- it's fair, they're allowed to do this -- but they'll try to sell you paint sealant, fabric protection, extra rust-proofing. they want to etch your vehicle identification -- extended warrantees, all this stuff. most of this stuff you don't need. most of the stuff is a waste of money. most of the stuff costs the dealer almost nothing to buy themselves, then they narc way up and try to sell it to you. >> or ifakgz you can thinly sli it, that works, too. in go thinly sliced granny smith apples. don't lose a finger. don't go all julia child on us. that's what the fennel looks like. add that fennel into it. >> perfect. >> then some toasted pine nuts. if you toast them it really brings out the flavor. most of those nuts go in there. exactly. then diced chicken. we talked about rotisserie chicken. pick up a chicken at the supermarket. they do it for you. scallions. parsley to brighten it up a little bit. salt, olive oil. pepper. those lemons over there. we can each take one. squeeze it like this, then your hand filters out any seeds that might show up. we don't need these seeds at this party. then give it a good stir. toss it around. >> that's really it? >> that's it. that's it. again, no mayonnaise. you can fill up little bibb lettuce cups like this. you can just -- >> display like that or also in like a wrap. >> tortilla or pita bread. you spill it all over the counter. it's really good. >> that's easy! i love it. now over here -- open-faced apple tart. we got our dessert. i put almond paste on the bottom. you can buy that at the supermarket. season the apples with spices and sugar. we get this nice concentric round here. >> i've never seen almond paste at the supermarket. >> it is in the baking section. i promise. >> you make your own crust here. but you can also use store bought. >> certainly you can use store bought. get that turbo charge with that almond underneath it. almonds and apples go so well together. sprinkle a little bit more sugar. egg white first. it will make it nice and shiny. >> this is so easy. >> almonds on the outside. and the sugar. >> it makes sense because it sticks to the egg white. >> exactly. pop it in the oven and this is what you get. isn't that gorgeous? >> it is so much healthier for you this way rather than a typical apple pie. >> exactly. there's no two pie crusts and all of that. we also have apple chips. all of these recipes are at yankee magazine.com and your website. have some fun with apples. >> how did you make those apple chips? is that just baking them? >> yeah. on a very low oven, 200 degrees. ginger, sugar, cinnamon, whatever spices you like. isn't that great? another great, easy thing for your kids. >> like a candied apple. >> isn't that fantastic?
