Police are writing citations for using a handheld cell phone device behind the wheel. They want drivers to pay attention. It did not take long for this man to learn the impact of distracted driving as he navigated a simulator. It is really, really hard. He crashed right away on his first try. The consequences are real out on the road. Police say Elizabeth Meyers was texting back in march when she encountered a young father riding a motorcycle. She was distracted and did not see an approaching motorcyclist who was driving on a roadway and he had the right of way. Jonathan roberts died. Elizabeth meyers was charged with manslaughter. Investigators say cell phone records indicate that she had one hand on the wheel and the other on her phone. This is a 20yearold girl who did not set out to kill somebody but that is what happened. The reality is there is no message that is so urgent that needs to be sent. This woman is hopeful that the case will drive home the point that distracted driving is more than a minor traffic offense.
