>> now your 11 insta-weather forecast with meteorologist ava marie. >> check out this video from indianapolis. a lot of eyes were looking up in the sky saturday afternoon in central indiana as there was a halo around the sun. it's called a 22 degree halo and it was visible in the sky even though there was no rain. a lot of people get confused by this. it was an atmospheric phenomenon caused by tiny ice crystals in the clouds. that helps reflect the sunlight when it shines at 22 degrees and it refracts, rather, the light and causes that halo effect. we get a lot of e-mails into our weather center with people wondering what that is and now you know. next time you see it, you could be the weather expert on that phenomenon. we have a lot of sunshine today. no halos that we should be worrying about. currently 80 degrees at b.w.i. thurgood marshall and 84 at the inner harbor. you can see our live shot from tower cam right now. looks a little hazy out there but mostly clear skies right now. temperatures with all the sunshine have been warming upment we started off the day in the 60's. look where we are right now. 84 degrees downtown. 80 at the inner harbor. 80 in annapolis and in the 70's and 80's across the lower eastern shore. mountains are definitely the cool spot today. 63 currently in frostburg. now, the dew point has been holding pretty steady over the past couple of hours. it just recently dropped down to 57 so it was around 60 this morning. we've seen that drop but should increase again as we head towards the afternoon. what that means, it will feel a little bit more humid later today. that's as storm system is approaching which could bring a chance for thunderstorms later tonight. here's a look at the forecast, at least earlier into the day, starting off with sun and then increasing clouds with clouds building in especially from the west towards the afternoon and evening hours. high temperatures around 89 for baltimore. as you get downtown, maybe in the low 90's. ocean city, 86 with mostly sunny skies and mountains, 86 with a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. as for baltimore, i think the best chance for thunderstorms late tonight, after sunset. the sun sets at 8:37 p.m. if you plan to be out this evening, you have a chance that it's mostly going to stay dry. mostly cloudy skies into the night. 70's for the downtown temperature overnight and 60's as you head into the suburbs. looking at the current weather pattern, few clouds to the south in virginia. other than that, quiet and clear across the mid atlantic. that's all going to change as a storm system heads our way. keeping an eye on debby. our latest tropical system, tropical storm increase winds to 60 miles an hour but look at this. this is the spaghetti plot. this is all the computer models trying to figure out why debby is going to go. looks messy out there. we have a bunch going west and some going north into the gulf coast and some tracking it into florida. what this basically means, a very uncertain pattern. very hard to tell where debby is going to go. national hurricane center has put out their official forecast saying that it's likely to go off towards the west. again, this could change. we'll be keeping you up to date as we track debby. biggest concern right now if it tracks to the west will be the southern coast of louisiana as it could pass by as a category 1 hurricane. back to our area, forecast it's going to call for a slightly cooler weather as we head to the early week. mid 80's tomorrow. 40% chance for a shower and thunderstorm. 81 on tuesday. breezy conditions and we heat right back up as we look to the end of the week. >> thank, ava. we're minutes away from sunday "q&a" with ocean city mayor richard meehan. if you plan to visit the ocean, stay tuned. >> are you aware of what's covered in your storm insurance policy? what you need to know to avoid dishing out some serious cash. >> but first, here's a look at some events going on arnold town. -- around town. >> welcome back. the time is 9:17 and 81 degrees on tv hill already. the 201,200 contain season -- 2012 hurricane season is upon us which is the time to make sure your coverage is up to date. alex joins us with some tips. thanks for with being us. this is an important thing that a lot of people overlook. what do we need to be checking in terms of our insurance policy? >> i think there are two main things. first is to check your insurance policy and make sure you go over it with your agent and you know what is and what is not covered. secondly what you should do is go through and make sure you're up on home maintenance. middle of the hurricane is the wrong time to find that you have a leak in your roof. >> very good point. wind storm and flood insurance. identify never heard of wind storm. >> wind storm is not typically covered under most policies although you can add it through an endorsement. people typically don't have flood coverage although if you are in a flood zone, you may -- that's something you can look into. these are all issues you can address with your insurance agent or with an attorney who can help you. >> all right. and another good thing to do is just take an inventory of your property. walk through and see what you have there that you probably need to insure. >> exactly. one of the things that you want to think about is imagine that a hurricane has happened. what are you going to do? you're going to need a list of everything that you want covered. pictures is always a great thing. you can walk through your house with your cell phone and take pictures of whatever you think you'd like to replace because the key is going to be once a disaster happens, you want to have the list and the pictures so that you can prove to the insurance company you have everything that you want replaced. >> right and when you're talking about the things you want to replace, you want to make sure the insurance for your property is what it will cost to actually replace your belongings, right? >> exactly right. a lot of people do it based on what they thought their value was and that may not have been updated for several years. and as we know, there's been a lot of ups and downs in the housing market so what you want to do is talk to your agent about what is it going to cost to replace your home? and do i have replacement coverage in my -- in my policy? >> ok, good point. once a year, schedule an insurance checkup. what is that? >> you want to meet with your agent and talk about issues like wind storm coverage and flood coverage and you want to maybe even give your insurance agent your list and pictures. today would be a good day to do it because as i've seen, it's going to be sunny so i don't think we're in danger today. it's better to be prepared on the front end. make sure someone has your list of -- and your pictures away from your home. so that it's not destroyed in whatever may occur. >> all right. anything else that we're missing here? >> i think it's just preparation is the key and just -- and the one thing to keep in mind is a few minutes today can save a lot of heartache and headaches and costs tomorrow. >> very good point. thank you, alex. appreciate your time. >> you're welcome. >> stay with us, coming up next, 11 news. your sunday gardner. stay with us. >> i have been busy this morning. i have been pruning and trimming and making absolutely -- oh, i missed something right there. >> all right. you are quite the master pruner. be careful. let's not get everything right now. we'll talk about which shrubs you should and shouldn't prune right now. >> do's and don'ts with the little pruner coming up on your sunday gardner.nd@@ >> good morning. welcome to your sunday gardner. along with carrie angle from valley view farms. you'll put me to work a little bit. only a demonstration. >> that's right. >> we want to talk about controlling the garden. we're going to be control freaks today. >> there you go. i know in my yard i have a couple of ones that are trying to take over one side of my house and you can't see the windows in some areas. we are seeing things that you should prune now and maybe a few things that you shouldn't prune. things like lilacs and a lot of these things have been pruned right after they finish blooming. you don't want to affect buds that may be setting for next year. >> on older wood or what will become older wood by next year, if you cut that off now, no blooms. >> exactly. watch on your hydrangeas. there's always exceptions, there's a lot of hydrangeas that bloom on new wood so some of those could be cut back, things like endless summer and other varieties out there. >> for general plants like hedges and things like that, you can go ahead and sheer or prune them. sheering is like taking a big hedge trimmer and boxing something off or making it round looking. you're kind of cutting the ends. >> right. i have a large farmer near me and he must have a half mile of hedge around it. there's no problem. they take hedge trimmers and really go to town and knock that back. almost about a quarter every year. just to keep it in line. >> really? >> something like this if you have a pair of pruning sheers, these aren't a brand new nice pair. they are really used by our guys here. we like to bypass because for growing for greenwood -- >> the roundness. >> cut that better. if you're getting rid of deadwood, you can use the anvil type printer that you can have the hard anvil that the pruner comes from. with this, i can go back and see where the new growth is and prune it to shape. wherever you want to go there. now, be careful. it's always good like anything else, use sharp things, use gloves. >> cut back to a particular joint or anything like that? >> usually cut back to the stem or to where you have two more branches or whatever coming out. but again, with these, with boxwoods, whatever next to us, you don't have to be that careful because again, you can actually just sheer these. >> the boxwood can be sheered or if you really have to do a more dramatic cut, you go a little deeper but you selectively, you don't maybe want to take everything back if you're just trying to reduce the bulk of the plant a little bit, right? >> right. you might find sometimes you have it grown a little bit towards the sun. you might have to take out one side of it a little bit and bring it back. >> balance it out. >> in most cases, when you think about it with hedges, our tendency is to sheer the top and come down the sides. try to prune it so the bottom actually sticks out, is wider than the top so light can get down there. so often you see it in a vase shape where you want a pyramid shape where the sun can penetrate and the leaves are healthier as they go. >> over here, the bigger problem. knockout rose, you're beginning to see them everywhere. >> you are. >> what do you do with these babies? i know like in march or february, you get them back to -- if you want to control the sides, that's a good time to take them back before they start growing. now, we're midway through the season. >> i have a problem in my yard where i didn't prune mine back and i would have to give them a heavy pruning. with this system, maintain this. if you take off some of these old blooms, it will just hasten the reblooming. and keep it coming out a little bit fresher. >> that guy has some new growth there. you may want to -- >> take off the flower. exactly right. >> i hate to remove buds that are just coming out. >> right. >> but if it's too tall, you could take it all down here. >> it will be -- >> it will come back. >> you're going to set it back a little bit. if you take off some of these -- there's all kinds of blooms here, if you take them off, you'll be three or four weeks before it tries to bloom or gets itself going again. >> i think last year, they went through five blooming stages. so just be a little bit careful with your roses. now, your hybrid tea roses you want to take those old flowers back and you want to go back to about the fifth leaf before you take them down. but it's just nice to have a pair of pruning sheers when you're walking in your garden to keep everything fresh. now, when you get to trees and larger things, we've always said, leave some of that to the experts really. >> when it involves a ladder or power lines, anything like that. >> exactly right. >> even if you're still on the ground and using the pole, you can bring the branch down on you. >> be careful. there are certified arborists out there, a lot of those folks can come out and take care of that stuff for you. be careful. handle what you know you can. leave some of the bigger jobs to the experts. >> you can always go to the internet, too, and get some tips and ideas on what -- if you have a question or something like that. >> home and garden information center has great information on there. keep it coming. >> or you can tune in next sunday for more on your sunday garden. i'll bring you some more tips about your garden. thanks for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> good job with the pruner. see you next sunday. >> if you have a question, a garden question, send it to sundaygardner, wbal-tv, baltimore, maryland. or you can go to our web site, wbaltv.com. >> and it is 9:28. 81 degrees on tv hill. ocean city mayor rick meehan is in our studio right now standing by with this morning's "q&a" segment. that's coming up. >> he brought us fisher's popcorn. dig into that during the interview. plus summer accessories. some of your favorite stars are wearing right now and now you can get it for much less. >> sitting on edge of his seat. he's so excited. >> i am. get that popcorn over here! >> temperatures are heating up. currently 79 in ocean city. it's already in the 80's in baltimore. we'll have details on the forecast when we come back. >> welcome back to "11 news sunday morning." thanks for joining us. >> let's take another look outside with ava. how is it checking out? >> well, things are really heating up. we've started off at 65. that was our low at b.w.i. thurgood marshall. 75 at the inner harbor. compare that to normal for the airport, 64 degrees. normal high is 86. the record for today, 100 degrees set back in 2010. i think we are going to stay well below our record but look at how quickly we've warmed up. 80 degrees right now at the airport with the humidity at 45%. as we look into the afternoon, we'll stay at least into the upper 80's to low 90's for the afternoon high temperatures. remember, normal is about 86 so we'll be a couple of degrees above that. increasing clouds and a chance for thunderstorms tonight mainly after dark. after the sun sets at 8:37 this evening. well, details coming up in the seven day that includes cooler weather. stay tuned. >> time now for the sunday morning "q&a" and joining me this morning is ocean city mayor rick meehan. thank you for being here. i said by the end of this interview, we'll get the popcorn tin in here. >> that's how we get in. show at the gate to come in. >> the guard says, you have the popcorn, come on in. >> that's right. >> first of all, you guys have had a great beginning to the season here. you obviously have been blessed with some good weather the last couple of weekends. how is it going for you? how are the merchants doing? what's going on there? >> i think everything is going great. you're right. great years, we've had that good weather in the spring. we've had great weather, terrific events. we had spring fest. we had the air show that is fabulous. we have a lot of different types of activity going on all spring, all early summer. so everybody seems to be very happy. the crowds have been good. they've been out and about. you know, everybody is smiling. the merchants are smiling and the visitors are smiling. that's the perfect combination. >> excellent. so right around the corner is fourth of july and i imagine it's going to be a big blast down there as well. >> it is. >> tell me what's -- >> first of all, it's hard to believe that it's fourth of july. >> i know. >> we're turning the corner here. in ocean city, we celebrate it in two locations. we have fireworks displays at two locations in ocean city. we have our huge fireworks display downtown in the boardwalk area and we have a fireworks display at northside park at 125th street that kind of divides it up a little bit so everybody doesn't have to try to get to one location. it's fabulous. it's a great way to spend the fourth of july with your family. >> ok. now, also some other events going on at the end -- towards the end of the summer, the dew tour is making a stop? >> we're one of only three stops they'll make this year. they'll be there august 16th, '17 and 18th. what a fabulous event that was last year when they erected that stadium out on the beach. they'll do it again. they look for it to be bigger and better. >> they had that event in baltimore once. i can imagine how much fun it is because you have -- down at the -- in ocean city because you have the ocean right there and -- >> incorporated a surfing event with it. they're going to do a little more of that this year so we're really excited about the dew tour coming back. >> folks in this area may be more familiar with the value that comes with going to ocean city because it's so close. only a couple of hours away. i mean, talk about -- i mean, the value even from this -- from our area, d.c. area, virginia, even parts of pennsylvania, it's a great deal to come to ocean city. >> it is. it's a drive to destination. gas prices are actually working in our favor this year, you know, so it's inexpensive to get there. and, you know, this is a summer of thanks in ocean city. and what we're doing in conjunction with all of our partners, the hotels and motels, we're offering free fireworks now every tuesday night during the week. there's a free laser show down on the boardwalk every sunday night. there's free concerts every wednesday night. there's sundays in the park on sunday. concerts at sunset park. we have all these activities going on all summer long that don't cost anything. come down, we want to thank you for being there. go out and enjoy it. >> good family fun. get to a couple of questions here. there was one question that a viewer had about safety and road crossings. they said, how can you stop jaywalkers on ocean highway? i know this is a problem. i'm a resident and driver of the ocean highway and this is all -- this is dangerous for all. so what can be done? i'm sure the police are familiar with this. >> well, they are. you know, we do an awful lot. we have public service announcements. we have campaigns. we have marked crosswalks. we have the crosswalks with the signals. we have the median strips. we do everything to advise all of our visitors to obey all the laws you'd obey at home. use the crosswalks and use the timing mechanisms, you know, so if people are on vacation and so often they run out into the highway and it's just -- it's terrible and then something bad happens. that's the last thing anybody wants. so we want to encourage everybody, please obey all the pedestrian laws. and the drivers, you know, just anticipate that anybody can step out at any time because they're on vacation and sometimes they're just not thinking like they may be at home. >> ok. >> be safe. that's what we want, everybody to come to ocean city, enjoy it while they're there and return home safely. >> perfect. also, you said there was a thing we saw also about some counterfeit money that you're telling people to be careful of. >> actually our police department that does an excellent job, i think they busted that already. i think they've confiscated the machine that was making the money and, you know, we're way ahead of it, but again, you know, you have to be careful and on vacation, you're there to have fun. we want to you have fun. just remember, just be careful and be safe. >> all right. i, unfortunately, have to end this interview now because my popcorn is sitting over there waiting for me. >> come on up here. >> wait, i'll have a taste before we -- >> i don't know if we'll get it open. >> get it open? >> it's vacuum packed. >> i don't know. let me see here. >> it's open. >> there we go! >> see? you want to share some with me? >> this is what ocean city is all about. >> you're not kidding! >> enjoy it. >> polish this whole thing off. >> way back over there. >> next week, our guests will be congressman dutch rufusburger. if you have a question for him, you can send them in. e-mail your questions to sunday questions at wbaltv.com. mayor, thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you for having us. glad to be here. >> great. don't go away. back with more news. but first here's david gregory with a look 80 at b.w.i. thurgood marshall up from our morning low temperature of 65 degrees. yesterday, we were in the upper 80's to near 90 degrees. today, we'll have much of the same. look at how quickly we've warmed things up. already 9:00 a.m. and we're already at 80 degrees. 83 in salisbury and 79 in ocean city. the coolest spot on the map -- the higher elevations. in the mountains right now, only 63 in frostburg and 68 in oakland. if you're trying to get away from the heat, that's definitely a good destination for today. dew point temperatures, they've been in the 50's to low 60's this afternoon. dew points help measure how much moisture is in the atmosphere. any time it's below 60, it's pretty nice outside. lot more humidity in the air towards cambridge. and even in baltimore, we expect the dew points to rise a couple of more degrees towards the afternoon. it may feel a little bit more humid today than where we were yesterday. here's a look at the forecast for today. we're starting off with sunshine. but clouds will be increasing towards the afternoon. those clouds mostly building in from the west. so the mountains first to get mostly cloudy. they'll be at a high of 86 later this afternoon. 89 in central maryland including baltimore and d.c. and 86 for the high in ocean city. much of the coast with the sunshine the entire day as the clouds slowly build in from the west. the mountains may see thunderstorms late in the afternoon. as for baltimore, that's a better chance tonight after dark. the sun should be setting at 8:37 this evening. after that point, we start to talk about chance for storms and they could be scattered in nature with winds south 5 miles per hour overnight. drop to the 70's downtown. downtown area stays a lot warmer. concrete helps to hold in some of that heat. drop down to the 60's into the suburbs for the overnight lows. high pressure in control for our weather pattern right now. there's a stationary boundary to our south. that's keeping things a little bit unsettled along the coast. also a cold front coming in from the west. this is crossing over the great lakes today and eventually, that's going to bring our rain chances tonight into tomorrow. also have to keep an eye on the tropics. our latest tropical system, debby. a tropical storm winds sustained at 60 miles an hour that you can see on the radar bearing down on the western tier of florida. heavy wind and strong waves pushing on shore as well. where debby is going to go is the big question. the national hurricane center has put out their official forecast taking debby first north and then towards the west. traveling just south of louisiana into the next couple of days. strengthening over the warm waters to a category 1 hurricane. however, i want to show you what all the models are thinking. this is what we call spaghetti plot. it's all the models put on one map. showing you that all the models trying to figure this out. it's going all different
