[captioning made possible by constellation energy group] captioned by the national captioning institute, inc. ---www.ncicap.org--- >> welcome to "11 news sunday morning." i'm mindy basara. >> and i'm lisa robinson. first let's look outside with jim nichols, in for john collins. >> they picked the perfect morning to take off. it is gorgeous today. everyone going to artscape, it will be a beautiful way to get outside. you need to take advantage of it now, and we'll show you why in a few minutes. 59 in frederick. temperatures warmer than what we saw yesterday morning. you can see these clouds mainly up to the north and west starting to dissipate during the overnight hours will be coming back later this afternoon. about 9:00 a.m. would be a good chance to go out and get a cup of coffee. beautiful at lunch time. 79 with low humidity. 82 by dinner time, but there are big changes on the way. unfortunately we'll talk about that in your seven-day forecast in just a bit. >> our big story comes out of baltimore city where two police officers are recovering after officials say a suspect opened fire while being taken into custody. >> the shootout started before 11:00 art morning at the intersection of edmonson and whit more -- whitmore avenue. >> a day that ended in a gun battle that left two baltimore police officers injured. >> i heard the shot, and you look around, and you see people running. >> it started in the north part of the city. officers responded to a domestic violence call. the suspect was gone by the time the police officers arrived. police say he moved to west baltimore and was allegedly involved in another domestic violence call. while arguing, the suspect shot at the officers. the officers took cover and broadcast a description of the suspect and his vehicle, a redford explorer. police say the suspect was out of his car and fired several shots through the driver's side window of the police car hitting the officer in the chest, stomach, and arm. >> our officer was able to get out on the passenger's side of the car, and he engaged the suspect in a gun battle whereby he incapacitated the suspect. >> the suspect was shot in the leg and the arm. but some say that's not all that happened a-- happened when they were on the scene. >> he was shot and down and they shot again. >> the commissioner wouldn't comment on that, but said -- >> this is a man that assaulted at least two individual women today. i have very few apologies to make about his condition or the outcome of this incident. >> he said he stands by this officer and their actions to prevent innocent people from being hurt by the suspect. to him those officers are heros. >> after being wounded in the seat of that car to pull himself out and engage the suspect in a gun battle, i it says a lot about the men and women in this police department, and i'm proud of their work. >> one officer was released from the hospital. the second officer remains at shock trauma. mayor sheila dixon visited the officers in the hospital. after the incident she spoke about her initiative to keep guns away from violent offenders. the person in this incident has an extensive history -- criminal record. compare your cereal at totalcereal.com and get a free sample. >> going to continue this trend of absolutely fantastic weather for our sunday. if you were out at artscape or just outside yesterday, it was gorgeous outside. we're going to do it again today. 66 degrees at inner harbor. 68 in the harbor. the city tends to keep things warmer in the overnight hours. the humidity is 90%. the humidity is actually going to be comfortable for today. it really is just a gorgeous look outside on our camera with the sun beginning to rise. get an idea of some of the cloud cover we're going to mention. most of which is off to the north and west, not associated with that storm system -- that's associated with that storm system out to the north and west. we do expect them to fire up again later this afternoon. just some fair weather cumulus is what we'll call them. not expecting any rain for the day. 57 in frederick. 52 out toward oklahoma. still 70 degrees in ocean city. if you are heading to the shore, this is going to be the best day for a while in ocean city. we'll get into that in just a little bit. cooler air will make its presence known here over the next few days. we have had a tough time of seeing any summer-like weather. that trend will continue in the rest of the week. this is going to be a beautiful sunday because we are between two different systems. a stationary front further down to the south. we are dealing with rain out to the north and west. not concerned about that for today. the real problem here, we have a switch going on. the front will come up to the front of the warm front and it will become stationary by monday, and that will be sitting by i-95 from new york city all the way down through virginia, and that will spell problems for us during the work week with rain. not expecting severe weather, but it could provide a damn per for outdoor plans this week. the clouds start to move in from the south monday. we will see an increase in clouds, but most of the heavy rains will be staying down to the south. on sunday, just a few clouds. 82 to 87 degrees. a great opportunity to get out and enjoy it. partly cloudy for tonight. 62 to 69 degrees. increasing clouds throughout the day tomorrow. temperatures in the mid and low 80's. down in ocean city, lots of sun. mostly sunny toward the maryland md mountains. unfortunately we're looking for more of that cloud cover in the seven-day forecast. across the state we're seeing temperatures in the 80's. it will be pleasant to be outside. stormy forecast. not each day is a wash-out. it looks worse in the seven day than it really is. each day a slirte chance for scattered thunderstorms with temperatures in the low 80's. >> speed km cameras are expected to be up and running in baltimore and in many other praces, zapping photos of people . some aren't worried about getting caught. >> you may not feel this way, but some maryland residents are begging for speed cameras in their neighborhoods while others have found a way around them. this man is pleading for a speed camera around his home. he says few people obey the 20-mile-an hour speed limit. >> i have seen speeds as high as 60 miles an hour. >> he believes speed cameras will slow drivers down. you might wonder how he and the police feel about this -- it is a warning system. designed to alert drivers when approaching a red light or speed camera. >> this sales man said he's fighting technology with technology, and avoiding a bunch of costly tickets. >> monday at 11, is that warning system legal? clouds out to the north and west. that's a storm system up toward the great lakes. those clouds will reappear later this afternoon giving way to partly cloudy skies. a great morning to step outside. maybe lunch outside. low humidity and plenty of sunshine. even dinner time, perfect for a barbecue. there are big changes on the way just in time for the work week. we'll have details coming up in just a bit. >> baltimore's department of public works says a water main break has happened on halethorpe avenue and washington. they say this is the second break in three months. d.p.w. officials say the 1600 block at halethorpe and washington avenue and more repairs may be necessary. >> mandatory water restrictions in place as the d.p.t. repairs a water main in northwest, baltimore city, and baltimore county. that means no watering your lawn or watching your car, and restaurants are prohibited from serving tap water unless specifically requested. residents just south of the restricted area may experience low water pressure as well. >> b.g.e. has unveiled its new multi-million dollar smart bill initiative. lowell melser has more. >> the future of electric and gas monitoring with its new smart meters, all part of an upgrade in b.g.e.'s grid. if b.g.e. gets the blessing, they will install two million of these meeters over the next two years. this will enable us to record energy usage and provide customers with more information about the amount and cost of energy that they are using. >> which b.g.e. officials say will help you, the customer, judge how much electricity and gas you use and when. it will also enable b.g.e. to reward customers with rebaits for reducing their energy usage during peek hours. -- peak hours. >> even a 1% or 2% would translate into the tens of millions of dollars saved annually in energy costs. >> b.g.e. wants to phase in these smart meters on an accelerated time table. >> the research group agrees we need to upgrade the grid, but it's concerned about the price tag. electric customers would be surcharged 38 cents per month and 44 senlts rising to $1.44 for electric and $1.32 for gas. >> b.g.e. is proposing to replace those, so rate pairs will pay not only for this in their home but the cost of a new meter. >> b.g.e. insists the means will make up for the extremes. >> if we're paying a $1.25 surcharge on the product but the net is a $10 reduction in the bill, that's the main thing. >> they hope to get approval in the next month or so. in the meantime, in an effort to affect more costs, b.g.e. will file with the department of associated out toward the great lakes, and you can see a little of that spin right there. most of those clouds started to dissipate during the overnight hours, giving to us a partly cloudy sky. no real concern about rain or storms for that fact. 70 down south. 52 now in -- 69 in ocean city. currently drier air out to the north and west is going to try to move in. an area of low pressure further down to our south. we have a little bit of a problem going on here. we have one storm going on to our west. we have this one storm system here. a lot of the weather patterns don't like to move. unfortunately that sun will become a warm front and then it will become stationary again for most of the work week just on the i-95 corridor. what that means is we're expecting lots of cloud cover and the potential for rain showers starting tuesday and lasting all the way into next weekend. futurecast shows clouds start to arrive by tomorrow afternoon, and most of the rain is not going to be arriving here until extremely late monday and even in tuesday in some locations. something we will certainly be watching closely. for the rest of today, very, very pleasant. it is a gorgeous day to be outside. you want to mow the lawn today because we might not have an opportunity tuesday. on your monday, partly cloudy, 83 to 87 with increase in clouds. down at the shore, a beautiful beach day at 81. mostly sunny. the index is high, use s.p.f. 30 or higher. all across the state, cooler temperatures found out to the west in the mountains. forecast shows a chance of storms developing late monday. but the best chance for rain will be tuesday. then we get stuck in this pattern. the seven-day looks worse than it is. we're looking for hit or miss showers or thundershowers. temperatures on the cool side into the lower 80's. >> we want our children to do well on important tests, like the s.a.t., but some parents accuse one company of taking advantage of that desire. the i-team found a company that urged pearnts to buy expensive products they couldn't return. >> when a telemarketter called sylvana marketer and asked her to increase her son's s.a.t. scores, she did. >> i consider myself a savvy consumer but as soon as she mentioned my son and education that was the key right there to get me to purchase a c.d. >> the company on the phone was the s.a.t. prep center out of texas. she implied that the company was affiliated with her son's school, so she bought a two toral for $119 and included a scholarship for a web site. immediately she had buyers remorse. >> as soon as i got off the phone i realized i had probably made a mistake. when her son got home, he said he didn't know anything about the c.d. and didn't want it. >> i followed the ininstructions step by step because i didn't want any problem getting my money back. i still to this date haven't gotten a refund. >> the better business bureau is all too familiar with the s.a.t. prep center. some parents led they were misled. said the kids asked for the software, but they hadn't, and the parents realized they could buy the same exact c.d. for a lot less. >> we bought this version online foor $30. and just like sylvana, parents are having trouble getting their money back. >> they tell me i have to open it get a label out and put it on the front, so if you open it, you can't get your money back, but if you don't open it, you can't get the label. >> others say there is a recurring charge for an online spuplment. >> they are having to change their credit card or debit card numbers. >> another complaint, no one can get ahold of the credit card company. >> it is ringing. >> we never got through, but our investigation reveals prep center owner john stewart has other problems. the texas congressman trawler says they were not paying sales tax. we discovered he was recently arrested. he's a registered child sex offender who did not report his employment address as required. stewart is now out on bail. his attorney did not return our calls. at this point, sylvana is not hopeful she will get her money back. >> they pushed the right button for me, which is my son's education, and still, i should have known better. >> the s.a.t. and a.c.t. prep center appears to be reselling software by kaplan a well known test p prep. technically she said the company can resell our products, bundle them and city. a quick look at the satellite picture. you see a few clouds off to the north and west. those have dissipated during the overnight hours. we expect them to come back, which will give us a partly cloudy sky. 54 degrees outside the door. a great opportunity to go out and get a cup of coffee. 79 by lunch time. by mid afternoon, perfect barbecue weather. there is a big change in the forecast, especially if you are headed down to the shore. i'll have all those details coming up. >> two baltimore city police officers were injured in a shootout with a suspect. >> it happened at the intersection of ed monday son -- of edmonson and whitmore avenue. >> the day that ended in a gun battle that left two baltimore police officers injured. >> i heard the shot and you look up and look around and you see people running. >> started in the northeast part of the city, officers responded to a domestic violence dispute. the suspect was gone by the time the officers arrived. police say he moved to west baltimore and was allegedly involved in another domestic violence call. while the officers were talking to the victim, another suspect came back and shot at the officers, striking him in the left side. the officer took cover and reported the vehicle, a red explorer, another police officer responded to the call. police say the suspect was out of his car and fired several shots to the driver's side window of the police car, hitting the officer in the chest, stomach, and arm. >> our officer was able to get out on the passenger size of the car, and he engaged the suspect in a gun battle where by -- whereby he incapacitated the suspect. >> he was shot, he was down, and he was moving, and they shot again. >> the commission said he had no information on that and wouldn't comment, except to say this -- >> this is a man that assaulted at least two innocent women today. i have very few apologies to make about his condition or the outcome of this incident. >> he said he stands by his officers and their efforts to prevent innocent people from being injured by the suspect. >> after being wounded in the seat of that car, to pull himself out and engage the suspect in a gun battle, i think it says a lot about the men and women of this police department. i'm damn proud of their work. >> kim dacey, wbal news. >> the second -- one officer has been released from the hospital. the second officer and the suspect remain in the hospital. police say the suspect in this case has an extensive criminal history. >> we have been trying to get all of our partners to understand what we need to do here in this city to close the loophole on handguns. this is a prime example. >> the mayor says this will be on the agenda at the next criminal justice board meeting. >> family and community members gathered to say good-bye to a friend. officials say it was during a botched robbery that two men attacked a man as he left a social club. police have not made arrests in the case. the man's body will be sent back to africa for a funeral. >> friends and customers gather to remember liquor store owner joon am kang. he was shot and killed inside his liquor store on -- in fuller ton -- fullerton. police say nothing was stolen in the robbery, but friends say otherwise. >> i've read a lot of articles that said they weren't sure if anything was stolen. but those articles are wrong. what they stole was something from all of us here. they stole something from the community, they stole from his employees, his friends, and his family. >> mr. kang opened the store 15 years ago. customers remember him as i generous man who was willing to give anyone a break. >> a fire that killed a 5-year-old prince george's county boy is ruled an accident. crews responded around 5:15 friday afternoon. investigators say the father left food cooking on the stove. his 5 and 7-year-old sons were inside the apartment at the time, officials say. >> the food on -- fire on the stove had burned itself out by the time firefighters arrived but had generated a tremendous amount of smoke. >> the 5-year-old died at the hospital, and the 7-year-old is in critical condition. the father is recovering from injuries he suffered while trying to rescue his kids. >> a water main break on halethorpe is reported. the six-inch main ruptured flooding three homes. officials say service has been restored, though more repairs may be necessary. >> they also blame aging infrastructure for another water main that affects about 150 residents in northwest baltimore city. that means no watering lawns or washing cars, and restaurants are prohibited from serving water unless it is specifically asked for. >> there is a good excuse not to wash your car. >> i know, i love that. >> baltimore city we get into the late afternoon hours. really, the last few hours kind of falling apart, but if you watch here, that is a stationary front that will be our problem during the week, and that will put us into a wet pattern for most of the week. 54 in d.c. cooler and drier air out to the west will try to move in. temperatures will be a little below average. average is mid 80 this time of year. our high temperatures only reaching the low 80's for the next few days. that's mainly for some cloud cover. right now to our south, we are setting up for a beautiful sunday. the weather pattern that is shaping up, it is going to be difficult for these storms to move. the weather system will come to the north and stall there. unfortunately this pattern will lead the potential for many clouds and even the potential for wet days ahead. you see in our insta-weather futurecast you don't have to worry about any storms today. a few clouds will start to move in late monday, and we are thinking after midnight on monday we could see a few rain showers sneak up from the south. for today, 82 to 87 degrees. it will be important, if you can, try to move along today, because when you see the seven-day forecast, you might not be able to. 83 to 87 for monday. if you are lucky enough to be on the shore, lots of sunshine. that will be changing significantly, as early as tomorrow. maryland mountains 81 degrees as well. everyone dealing with the sunshine. a few popcorn clouds as well. of course out toward the mountains it will be in the low 70's. here is your seven-day forecast. it looks like more than it is. each day after late monday we will be dealing with the threat for scattered rain showers, maybe a pop-up shower or thundershower in there. each day is not a wash-out, but it will be gray and soggy. francisco. california transportation officials say the accident happened around 3:00 saturday afternoon when one train rear ended another. both trains were full at the time. no serious injuries reported. >> a suspect responsible for six murders is in custody. the bodies were found in tennessee yesterday morning. when the suspect confessed, he gave up information that led to one of the bodies in huntsville, alabama. there were two additional crime scenes. five people were found dead at two separate homes. investigators say some of the victims were related. >> we have -- it may possibly be tomorrow before we can give you the fantastics of the victims. >> not released names of the victims or consensus expected will not say how the victims died. >> two high school girls softball coaches have been fired for violating the frederick county alcohol policy. it stemmed from a part at the coach's home. but not what you may first seem. >> it was first shock, hurt, and then there anger. i was numb. i didn't expect it. >> brad young, coach of the varsity football team at walkersville high school talked about how he felt last week when he found out that he and j.v. coach were fired. it was back in june when the coach threw an end of season party at his home where both players and their parents attended. he said at least one parent brought beer to share with some of the other parents and at no time were the students near the alcohol. days later young said he steefed a letter from the school principal asking him to explain why beer was at a school function. >> i didn't realize it was a violation of policy, but a appropriate punishment would have been a letter of reb reprimand and don't do this again. >> then last week coaches young and cleveland got word they were terminated. >> the players were hurt, dismayed, upset, and now they are fighting to help keep me as coach. >> that would include this save the walkersville coaches facebook page which talks about how upset the players and their parents are, highlighting both coach's hard work and dedication to the kids. still, if these coaches were so well liked, it begs the question. >> any idea who ratted you out? >> i can't comment on that. >> while coach was silent, the facebook page shed some light saying a parent upset about their child's play time reported the incident to the board of education. now two coaches are out of a job. >> the frederick county school board would not comment calling this a personnel matter, referring to its policy on alcohol. however, the coaches can appeal to the superintendent. coach cleveland has not appealed. >> howard county residents targeted by a water scam. >> how victims are being tricked into buying purification treatment they don't need and how you can stop a scam. >> if door to door. some residents have been offered free water testing. melissa carlson has more details. >> door after door at the governor's grant townhomes you can small plastic bags with vials and official-looking instructions inside. the this resident said she saw the men who placed them here and spoke to them. >> i pointed out to him that solicit tation was prohibited by ordinance in this neighborhood, and he proceed to tell me there was no solicit tation involved and there was water testing, and he told me how horrible the water was. >> they called howard county utilities to inquire about the water and why it needed to be tested. administrators for howard county affairs. >> howard county is great. the solicit tation is actually not from the county but rather from a private organization that didn't identify itself on the solicit tation at all. >> and in there lies the problem. while the small print reads not affiliated with any government program, howard officials say it can be deseeving and possibly a mistake. >> people who want to do testing will then come back with an indication that your water isn't safe or should be better and could try to tell you what could be a costly water treatment system that you may or may not need. >> as we found out, some people filled out the requested personal information and left their samples while others tossed the test. this man said he received almost the same solicit tation before. >> i did then, and i think 24 hours later, 36 hours later they came back and wanted a charge for a water sample, so i had an in to what it was then. >> howard county stalls say they are still investigating. >> they are trying to identify the company. at that point we will talk to them about potential violations of law. >> melissa bins are putting the squeeze on donations. who is profitting? the i-team uncovered dozens of these collection boxes that may seem like they are benefiting marylanders when they are not. at a local hospital, concern about the identification of this box is turning some away. some believe the bins are directly impacting their iferts. the st. vincent depaul donation center of baltimore believes its donations are down 30%. more than ever, marylanders are turning to nonprofits for help. it is important to select wisely. give the donations with direct maryland kecks as early as possible. make sure you check with the better business bureau to see what their experience is with these organizations. ask these agencies where a donation ends up. does it stay local or is it sent around the country? is after being taken custody. >> just after 11:00 at the intersection of edmonson and whitmore avenues. >> a day that ended in a gun battle on the west side that left two baltimore police officers wounded. >> i heard the sound and looked around and you see people running. >> it started in the northeast part of the city. officers responded to a domestic violence dispute on lake avenue around 10:30. the suspect was gone by the time the officers arrived. police say he moved to west baltimore and was allegedly involved in another domestic violence incident. while police were talking to the victim, the suspect came back and struck at the officer. the officer took cover and broadcast a description of the suspect, a redford explorer. another person heard and pulled up behind the s.u.v. police say they fired several shots to the driver's side window of the police car hitting the officer in the chest, stomach, and arm. >> our officer was able to get out on the passenger side of the car and engaged the suspect in a gun battle. whereby he incapacitated the suspect. >> the suspect was shot in the leg and the arm, but some witnesses say that's not all that happened. >> he was shot and down and not moving. >> commissioner bealesfeld said he had no information on that and wouldn't comment except to say this -- >> this is a man who assaulted at least two innocent women today. i have few apologies to make about his condition or the outcome of this incident. >> he said he stands by his officers and their actions to protect innocent people from being hurt by the suspect. to him, those officers are wounded. >> after being wounded in the seat of that car, to pull himself and engage the suspect in a gun battle, i think it says a lot about the men and women of this police be on the agenda at the next meeting. >> members of liberia's community got together to -- in a botched robbery two men attacked the 60-year-old roti. police have not made arrests in the case. his inside his store thursday night. nothing was stolen from the store according to reports, but his friends tell a different story. >> i've read all the articles i can find, and every article said that they weren't sure if anything was stolen. but those articles are wrong. what they stole was something from all of us here. they stole something from the community. they stole something from his employees, his friends, and his family. >> mr. kang opened the store 15 years ago. we interviewed him a few years back when he if sold a winning lottery ticket. >> a fire that killed a 5 yeerlt boy is ruled an accident. investigators say the father left food cooking on the stove. his 5 and 7-year-old sons, officials say, were inside the apartment at the time. >> the fire on the stove pretty much burned itself out but generated a tremendous amount of smoke. >> the 5-year-old died a short time later at the hospital. the 7-year-old is in critical condition. the father is recovering from injuries he received when trying to rescue his children. >> baltimore's department of public works says a water main -- blames a water make main break -- in fact, they say there is a rash of recent water main breaks. they say the six-inch thick main broke flooding three homes. service has been restored, though more repairs may be necessary. >> you can also blame aging infrastructures for mandatory water restrictions in place this morning. the d.p.t. repairs a water main which affects 150,000 residents in baltimore city and county. that means no watering your lawn or washing your car. restaurants to the north and west will have a little bit of an influence on us. temperatures will be on the low side also. so if you like that hot, sticky, july kind of weather, unfortunately this isn't the forecast for you. watching this line you saw there on the stationary front, the problem we're running into this week is we're not seeing any major systems come across the country, which means our pattern is going to get kind of stuck. this front will turn into a warm front by late tomorrow and then it will go stationary again along the i-95 corridor, and what that means is we'll be looking for cloud cover throughout much of the work week. futurecast shows the sunshine for today. clouds starting to arrive late tonight, but mainly late on monday. thicker cloud cover starting to move in. accident happened around 3:00 p.m. the trains were full at the time, but no serious injuries were reported. >> a suspect ked connected to six murders is now in police custody. bodies were found in alabama and tennessee yesmed when the suspect confessed, he gave up information to one of the body -- that led to finding one of the bodies in alabama. in fayetteville, tennessee, five people were found dead in sue separate homes there. some of the victims were related. >> we are probably going to be here all night. it may possibly be tomorrow sometime before we can dullly give you the we will have a gorgeous afternoon. a few clouds off to the north and west with an area of low pressure off to the great lakes. we'll see some more clouds starting to pop up. you see this line right here, that's a stationary front off the coast, and it is planning to move a little closer to us, and that is going to have a big impact on our weather by the middle of the work week. 67 in dover. 70 in ocean city. temperatures starting to spike up a little bit. we're looking for temperatures in the low 80's today. lots of cooler, drier air off to the north and west will have an influence on us. temperatures holding steady into the mid 80's which is cooler than average. this is what we're watching right now with no major weather systems on the map, we're looking to get stuck in a weather pattern. the satellite picture will turn into a warm front. come to the north of us, and it is going to park itself over i-95 over most of the work week, and that's going to be a problem because we'll see a good deal of cloud cover over much of the day and rain showers throughout tuesday, wednesday, and even into thursday as this pattern breaks. future showing sunshine today -- futurecast showing sunshine today. monday sunny and a few clouds start to move in by the afternoon. most of the heavy rain stays to the south for monday by arrives mainly after midnight on monday. the rest of today, a beautiful day outside. 82 to 87. if you have yard work to do, this is going to be the day to do it. next week will be a little on the wet side. it will be a pleasant night tonight. you can give the air conditioner a bit of a break. we will wake up with sunshine. clouds arriving by the afternoon. lucky enough to be on vacation, it will be 81 another ocean city. s.p.f. 30 or higher notice or you will get a burn in about 15 minutes. the rest of us seeing temperatures into the 80's. your seven-day forecast shows that stormy pattern starting to move in. it looks a lot worse on the seven-day panel than it is. none of these days will be wash-outs, but each day will have a potential of seeing rain showers. it will be mostly cloudy and temperatures will be staying in the low 80's, even into "earth right "i owns the bin. we tried to reach the owners. instead office manager michelle ventura answered our call. she said earthright has 60 bins here and sells the clothing. st. joseph gets 60% of the proceeds. >> we asked about the confusion it -- it would cause having st. josephs. she said earth right is not trying to mislead anyone. >> when we call, we tell them it is st. joseph center. they all work together. they are all part of the roman catholic church. >> this for company donates to d.a.r.e. america, a drug prevention program. >> this is a shirt from the norfolk mission team. >> the owner says this clothesing, 42,000 pounds of it, is headed to gaut mallia where it will be shall -- gaut mallia where it will be sold. >> it can be broken up and sold to individual village people. >> she says their company has given d.a.r.e. more than $250,000. d.a.r.e. says the bins help in many ways. >> when they put the logo out there it is a reinforcement for the people to know the program is out there, alive, and well. >> the cancer-free america bins are owned by capital clothing recycling. the president of the for-profit company jay caterri said he has about 100 bins in the baltimore area. his company has come under criticism on the web for the amount of money he allegedly gives to charity. >> there was a disgruntled employee of ours that started a false blog on the internet. he sent the blog directly to the people at the cancer center. >> the sydney cancer center at johns hopkins tells us due to concerns about cancer-free operations it no longer abblingsepts donations from this organization -- accepts donations from this organization. >> anyone can swing and spin things or you can say this guy went out, started a foundation, and he gave away $87,000 last year, and it helped people that might not have gotten helped. >> now he says cancer-free america gives about $1,500 a month to the johns hopkins children's cancer center. officials tell us for the time being the cancer center and children's center are not accepting donations from mr. catari or his organization, cancer-free america. hopkins said the money is being returned. >> and what about those yellow bins? 800 in our area which belong to a nonpropped profit called aid. >> planet aid disagrees with that f. they add in 2008 they spent 42% on international aid, 41% on habitat protection and that planet aid has a conflict of interest policy in place. any officer or board mb that might be perceived to have a conflict will always excuse herself from any discussion or decision in such matters. and most joined by john gert rusm de. you're going to teach us not only how to make a great crabcake but how to keep it together. >> people get nervous about that because you don't want it to fall apart, otherwise you have scrambled crab. >> let's talk about the crab you are using. this does not look like all lumps. >> exactly, you want to use some jumbo lump and lump because it holds together better. you need a little bit of the smaller pieces just to make it all congeal. >> what about the less of the glue we need to keep it together? >> we need a little glue, you need crabcake batter. a little mayonaise and eggs. this is a very traditional chesapeake crabcake. that is generally how they all start. you can go a number of different directions from there. we are going to put in some dry mustard. you could put in a dejan, a wet mustard, and -- dijon, a wet mustard, and every family has a different way of doing this. you just give it flavoring, a little old bays. >> of course, that's a signature. i can smell it -- it's so good! >> and a little wochester sauce. you find it in so many chesapeake rezz bies. -- recipes. >> has a juicier feel. >> exactly. in austin they like to put lemon juice into the crabmeat. this recipe is from jan clayton down in cambridge which is the oldest packing house on the chesapeake bay. >> is that your secret where the crabmeat comes from? >> yeah, you have good crab, you are going to have a good crabcake, that's for sure. batter up. if you're high end you can use panko bread crumbs, the japanese bread crumbs. but we'll go real here. this is saltine crackers. put a little of those in with the crab meat first. take your batter, pour it all over the crab meat. kind of give the crab meat a bath. it likes it very much like that. >> spicy batter. >> exactly. let me get my burner turned autopsy a -- turned up a little bit. you might want to put a glove on. i generally don't, but today we will just a little here. so you just mix it. you see what i'm doing here? i'm tossing it. you do not want to use a spoon or any kind of ewe tense yill like -- utensil like that because there are laws in this state and we can be arrested. >> if you used a spoon at home -- >> it breaks up the lumps. >> the secret of cooking it together is something you said you do before the crabcake is cooked. >> i form the crabcakes gently, put it in the refrigerate oir for one hour, then it holds so you can cook it without it breaking up. so i'll start. then you have some crabcake. >> john, thank you so much. if you like the recipe, right to us here at the
