let's go to the governor for the latest. i will have more later. >> this is gov. martin o'malley keeping in -- speaking in reisterstown with an update on the latest ground. captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- [captioning made possible by constellation energy group] >> we are awaiting gov. o'malley. >> good morning. here we go again. i want to give you an update on snow preparations for the state of maryland. i guess we should also give you an update on where we are in terms of snow recovery from the last historic snowfall. we have approximately 12,519 houses without electricity right now. approximately 10,000 of those are in montgomery county. so that number continues to come down. we have personnel -- we have to add up to 3000 personnel deployed in every corner of the state since friday morning. the forecast right now as we prepare for him tonight and tomorrow is for anywhere from 10 inches up to 20 inches depending on where you are in the state. with once again central maryland appearing like it is forecast to receive the greatest amount although the eastern shore and the upper shore predicted to receive a sizeable amount. as you can imagine, we have a lot of challenges. as we go over the all-time record in case no season. among those challenges being where do we put the snow after it is proud. second, to shift around the dwindling supplies of salt so that we have as much as we can to put into this. we have been gearing up as you might imagine all day. i've been out on the interstates and on highways. the highways look pretty good now when you consider where they were just about 24 hours ago. the interstates i have been on, including some trouble spots like route 50, are down to the pavement. in this next storm we are going to have trouble doing that. in many places we will not be able to plow the snow off the roadway and onto the shoulder because if there is snow piled up on the shoulder. our goal for the next 48 hours is to keep the highways passable and for emergency vehicles and also for certain vital commerce that has to go on, including helping salt trucks coming back to our salt domes. let me reiterate, i might sound like a broken record, but this is not a good day to be on the roads. if we encourage you to stay off the roads this evening and into tomorrow. however difficult the roads were to manage in this first 26 inches or 28 inches, they will be even more difficult as we receive another 10-20 inches. on the side streets in the counties and in the city, still a big challenge. york county government, your city government knows that it's a challenge. yet as angry as people might want to become with their city council people were county council people, the fact of the matter is when you have a snowfall of this magnitude, this historic magnitude over the short amount of time in which we are receiving it, it is just -- there is no city or county government geared up to be able to remove all of this from all of the secondary streets, as much as all of us would like. we also have national guard still out there. they are on 22 missions right now. they are arresting and gearing up and preparing to go back out there to again assists local firefighters, paramedics, and police. they are also teamed up with their state counterparts. i am joined by a number of people at the command center. as distinguished from the operational command center for state highways that you have become familiar with. we thought you might want a change of pace, that is why we ask you to come here.
