championship match tomorrow. along with the consolation. don't forget matt kuchar even though they lost to luke donald will still be playing the loser of this semifinal in the consolation match tomorrow, as well. >> johnny, i don't understand that play. he just took a 1-up lead after 13 and played a long iron off 14. it's not a very difficult driving hole. but he's put himself in a tough position here. >> you hate to take, you know, an iron off of a par 4. this is a bunker. like wow. >> and in this morning match with jimenez, he'd be hitting an iron off the tee. hit it and make birdie. >> so there you go. >> i don't have any problem with the iron off the tee. i have a problem with the iron into the bunker. >> how far do you got, roger? >> he's got 198 to this bunker. >> roger, the 35-mile-per-hour wind prediction has not come true today, has it? >> it's not that hard. it is gusting up a little bit, i'd say maybe got up in the mid 20s at brief moments. but no. nowhere near 35. >> that may need to go. he might have got that heavy. that just catches the front bunker. >> so you hit a bad shot the caddie makes you break your own bunker. >> there's nobody behind him, that's for sure. >> nothing's new. >> here's a situation, john, like the last hole, bubba has put himself into perfect position off the tee. >> look at that. >> the lie and everything. >> looks pretty good, doesn't it? >> he's got 132, john. >> the back left hole location there. >> uphill, roger? >> slightly. downwind. >> the draw again. >> a bit of a miss for bubba with a sand iron with kaymer in trouble. 1-down in his match. trying to reach the finals. against luke donald. stay with us. we'll be right back. golf channel and nbc coverage continues past 6:00 eastern hour here out of the beautiful southwest. and nbc sports app which is one of the hots new apps of the year is now available on the ipad and iphone. to get all the inside info and much more you can go to the app store now here, got a few things going against him. got to play across a bowl. actually where the ball is, have to get it somehow over that into the hole. the wind is helping him. but getting it to land on top and try to spin it. >> 45 yards. >> pretty close to that, johnny, about 40. >> that's never going to get up over the ball. >> going to fall back down. >> i'm surprised. >> accenture match play championship comparison between these two. about the same number of holes played. holes won. lost. pretty even. although they are pretty much opposites of each other the way they go about their play. watson kind of a free spirit. guy that's really never had any lessons. self-taught. martin kaymer brought up through the german system, golf, very regimented. definitely a swing that is very technically sound. >> i love that bubba could be as good as he is with just his own home-grown action, crazy foot action, just -- just a natural movement for him. he doesn't think anything of it. what kind of shot he wants to 4i9. >> it's found see guys not so wrapped up in instructors, so to speak, and just kind of playing the game. >> so homogenized. >> bubba watson, he's like a swashbuckler. take a look at pinpoint animation from bubba's putt. at the bottom of your screen. he's going to start in the bowl and go up and over that slope. 56 feet in length. and doesn't have that much doesn't have that much break for these greens. about eight feet. this is going to be slow up the edge of that bowl. >> trying to commit to his read. you're right peter, slow putt. >> travel a little bit. >> what a read, though. >> it's a good lead, john. >> yeah, it's a good putt. it was slow like you guys said. real slow. he gave it a good whack. >> there's a lot of grass on the greens. the greens are in great shape. but they're healthy. there's a lot of grass, so could be a little sticky from time to time, especially going uphill. >> the fear of the strong wind, jake they did not mow the greens and in fact watered them between quarterfinal and semifinal play to make sure if the winds picked up they wouldn't get out of control here. >> that's one thing that you taught me, johnny, back when i started the tour. you told me that i had to hit the uphill putts harder. i didn't really understand it. you said it was a gravity thing but that would take too long to explain. >> he was analyzing your game way back then? >> that's the byu advantage. >> that's right. >> see if he can get it into the hole. >> got it there. but misread it. so that's a five for kaymer. so bubba watson has this straight-in three footer. to tie the match. and if bubba wins this hole, it's going to be the seventh lead change in this afternoon's match. talk about up and down. roger you were talking about bubba focusing on these putts. he's been practicing only from ten feet and in. he said i'm not worried about anything else. this is the area that's going to make him money, make him birdies, save missed greens. >> and everybody else that ever played this game. >> well, seve, he could chip in a lot. >> he's coming off a key miss from a short distance on the last hole, right, rog'? >> yeah. it's from just inside six feet. this is about half that. so bubba watson. seventh lead change in the match. pulls even with martin kaymer. stay with us. we'll be right back. entirely different semifinal matches as we continue our golf channel on nbc coverage here. luke donald, getting by matt kuchar 6&5. and martin kaymer and bubba watson once again all square. neither golfer has had bigger than a 1-up lead. as watson makes a par at 14 to square up the match. and they get ready here on the short par 4. just 334 yards. it is reachable. johnny, driven it on the green this week out of 100 tries. >> well, you can see the cross desert right there, 217-yard carry. the bunker on the right is definitely in play if you flare it 300 yards. bubba won't have any trouble reaching this green. i think kaymer's got enough strikes to be able to do it himself. a big falloff on the right which is not a bad way to chip into this green. and you just don't want to go left, which is possible in the desert. that is no good over there. so it's short, but it's dangerous. you hit a bad shot here you can get in trouble. >> that's what you want on a short par 4. >> yeah. hole location on the back left. >> no one drove it this morning in the quarterfinals. >> i would think, roger, are you close by there? >> i am, john. >> what's that wind doing again? >> well, it feels like it's from the right. maybe with some help in it. >> so it's a perfect cut drive for him? >> yeah, that's i'm sure exactly what you're going to see this ball start off to the right, cut back, ride the wind. >> i think he's flat on the green. >> number one driving distance on tour. look at this curve ball. >> holy mackerel. >> that curved too much. >> going to have to get lucky. doesn't look like there's any luck over there. >> desert brush. >> not a bad shot. >> watch this thing. we'll see how high his hands are there. a little early, i think. he leaves the face open too much. stays under it nice. but too much open clubface. started fine. just had a huge krich on it. >> that must have curved maybe 80 krards. >> maybe 80 yards or so. >> kaymer's thinking this might be the opportunity i need. just don't want to go on that low bunker. >> looks pretty good. straight bullet. >> this does look good. >> well, not a bad spot. >> greenside bunker for martin kaymer. well, earlier today, in the quarterfinals, it was a great comeback by bubba watson. and this was bubba at the 13th. and that chipped away after he was five down through ten. so a birdie there gets him to three down. then his second at the par 4 14th. taking on j.b. holmes in the course. and again, the accenture championship, this would turn out to be an incredible comeback. 5-down in match play through ten. you don't come back from that but bubba continued the chase. his second at the 15th, after he had gotten just two down with a winning hole at 14. that would be another winning hole. four out of five holes. he was still one down after they halved 16 and 17. and this was j.b. holmes' second shot at the 480 yard finisher. the desert low. and so, bubba was able to win the hole eventually. although there's a tight shot of j.b.'s ball. he got a drop, redrop. in the meantime bubba watson is waiting. as it took 23 minutes to play this 18th hole alone. so, j.b. holmes gets another drop. >> the drops, they have these little watering drip devices under the bush to keep that alive and also where that ball was, bubba still waiting. finally holmes with his third. well past the flagstick. so bubba went on to win the hole with a par to square the match. so again, it took 23 minutes to play 18. first extra hole, at the 10th, 19th hole this is. and holmes visiting the desert again. this hole took 27 minutes to play. bubba watson got involved just to make sure that any kind of drop that j.b. made was properly done. getting involved in the process. and it just took forever the final two holes between watson and holmes to complete. >> bubba wasn't happy where the initial drop was going to be and was trying to help him a little. >> all bubba needed on the final two holes to pull off an incredible comeback for a couple of pars, watson didn't lead the entire match until that last putt fell. it took 50 minutes to play those last two holes. and you know, j.b. holmes not the quickest player on tour. we understand that he has gotten some criticism on the slow play, perhaps, that took place. >> well, what is the situation with bubba watson right now, rog'? >> the ball has come to rest in the middle of a bush. unplayable and now he's just going to have to figure out where he can drop under penalty of the shot. and come up with a play. >> just go somewhere, man. >> you're in the way every hole. every hole. >> it appears that bubba was talking about the guy holding the red jacket. he did not like how close he has been to their shots for much of the round. >> well, i haven't noticed him before but bubba just made mention of that. obviously something he doesn't care for. >> well, when you're dragging around a red sweater, you know, that's going to catch your eye. if the guy's moving at all. >> the match director giving him directions. >> and he'll get two club-lengths no nearer the hole. going to be playing three if that's the option he elects. >> he can use -- >> yeah, but all he can do is drop right there. >> okay. >> you can go back as far as you want. so it's not too tough. >> he loses his match after this hole, he had the perfect shot for this hole location and yardage, and just get that big old flare, and it's not a good time to go 1-down to world number two. >> you wouldn't expect kaymer to be the kind of player that's going to help you once he gets ahead with a few holes to go. >> he did try to help miguel out, i can tell you that. >> well, that's true. >> won three in a row at 15, 16 and 17 beginning right here. >> this is all powerful. >> oh. >> right underneath it. ball came the much slower than he thought it would, johnny. >> he could have really spun that from that lie. >> you see a lot of shots from the desert here today. and kudos to our crew here that get those shots, they have to take their cameras in the thorny desert, and right where these guys follow them around. it's been a long week for them. but, we sure appreciate all the great shots that they give us from wherever the ball ends up. >> this shot right here will come down with a lot of spin. if he hits it correctly, huh, roger? >> yes. >> how about a little chubby reporters that have to walk out there? >> well, look at the things that are sharp out there. >> you're not carrying a 60-pound camera. >> you got that right. >> struck it under the hole. >> okay. >> not great. but okay. >> doesn't have to do real well there. probably just has to two-putt. let's take a look at this third shot for bubba in the desert. trying to straddle that bush and comes down where he strikes behind the sand. i think that sand was a lot softer, and there wasn't as firm a base as he thought. so when the club went down, talk about skidding, it actually went down under almost like a bunker shot and he went under it. >> i think it surprised him. >> kaymer could be on his way here to a 1-up lead. three to play. >> if this doesn't go in, i'm sure he'll concede the hole. >> that would mean kaymer would only need to two-putt. >> up over a little rise in the green, john, and it's going to be moving to his right. >> the kind of thing if he somehow were to snake this out, it could really shock kaymer once he's going to -- gave it a good chak. >> and he has conceded the putt to kaymer and the hole. >> so, back advantage to kaymer 1-up. and it is his fourth lead for the fourth different time in this match. back and forth they go. we'll be back with the 16th with kaymer on top trying to take on luke donald tomorrow. for three , i'm a coach. but when i was diagnosed with prostate cancer... i needed a coach. our doctor was great, but with so many tough decisions i felt lost. unitedhealthcare offered us a specially trained rn who helped us weigh and understand all our options. for me cancer was as scary as a fastball is to some of these kids. but my coach had hit that pitch before. turning data into useful answers. we're 78,000 people looking out for 70 million americans. that's health in numbers. unitedhealthcare. they play on in the second semifinal. bubba watson and martin kaymer still with hopes of lifting that trophy tomorrow. luke donald has the same hopes. 6&5 winner over matt kuchar. a couple of lopsided wins for luke today. earlier a winner in the quarterfinals against ryan moore. and then martin kaymer, 1-up through 15 over bubba watson. again, neither bigger lead than 1-up all day long. as we continue this long quarterfinal and semifinal day at the wgc accenture match play championship. the play has reached the par 3 16th. 192 yard par 3, longest par 3 on the card here. we'll take a look at how close this match has been. lots of halves, as you can see in the middle portion of that first nine. and they're just exchanging blows here on the backside. >> to the right. i think, roger. >> that's correct, john. a little gusty back up here in this canyon. >> should be a good win for a soft draw. >> flared it well right here this morning. he has started it and it is losing it right again. >> that's not a good lead. gives him a lot of options. not much green to work with. he might have to chip and run it up there, on a 50/50 up and in is all. >> so yet another opening for bubba. >> that's a heck of a gift right there. >> bubba, when he got into that pga championship playoff, with martin kaymer at whistling straits last year, was really proud of the final round 68 that got him into that playoff. he was asked after he lost in the playoff to kaymer how disappointed are you. and some people were kind of taken aback that he wasn't more disappointed. and he just said hey, listen, i'm happy. i shot a 68. i got into a playoff. i almost won my first major. and the attitude that he's adopted. positive, doesn't get down on himself even when things don't go his way. >> dan, not only that. that final round put him onto the ryder cup team. >> absolutely. >> put him up on the point list to play in his first ryder cup. >> he was emphasizing all the positives and the press was saying, boy, we thought he might be a more dejected guy. >> this was a perfect shot for him to hit that cut up against the wind that's going to the right, i would think, roger, just would hole it right in there. almost ten feet right of the hole and cut a little bit up into it. come down real soft. >> i would agree with you, john. but you never know, really, what kind of shot he might play. but i would think, i would like that. i would like to have something favored that i could keep left of the hole. >> as it stands right now, he's going to hook it. >> you never know like you say. >> you never know. >> way out to the left and play a big, sweeping, with the wind draw. >> oh, gosh look at that. >> way right. way right. >> over there to kaymer. >> wow, look what happened on the last hole. you know, bubba got himself into trouble. when you said it set up well for him, miscue there at 16. the forecast is full of ifs. retirement these days, if i'm too exposed to
