That the amount of time we spend on our cell phones is bad. Right when was it when did it ever hear anybody say. Hey you spend a lot of time on your cell phone that's great. You know this always you're spending too much time on that thing turn it off don't know if it's rude don't be under cell phone all that well. They specially say that it's bad for young people and the question is So I mean let's let's assume that it's bad right how bad is how bad is it actually a new report from The Guardian says it could be pretty bad quarter of young people may have problematic smartphone use problematic smartphone phone use p.s.u. New research suggests one in 4 children and teens may have a problematic cell phone use that could be linked to poor mental health cording to experts behind the research published in The Journal b.a.m.c. Psychiatry more than 23 percent of children and young people have dysfunctional relationships with their smartphone I had thought funny but it's just it sounds like you have a dysfunctional relationship with an inanimate object it's hard to believe. Well experts have long question the side effects of screen time on mental health and well being the new research suggests that particular patterns in people's relationships to technology and smart devices may be more harmful than screen time itself. Interesting how does that work but see it seems like a substantial minority of teenagers and young people from various different countries are self reporting a pattern of behavior that we recognize from other addictions the quality of evidence is poor but it is enough to warrant further investigations Here's what it said the researchers looked at that from $41.00 studies involving a total of almost $42000.00 participants across Europe Asia and America analyzing a pattern of problematic cell phone use among teens and teen adults I'm sorry young adults the researchers pointed out it was too early to call problematic cell phone use and addiction but noted that the results revealed similar emotional behavioral patterns I think you can call it an addiction right you're addicted to something you can't put it down you can't stop using it you can't be away from it for too long that's the very definition of an addiction one of those critical things for parents to consider is whether screen time is having a detrimental impact on other activities like schools school relationships or other interests this study suggests that this is the case for a significant minority of children and young people. So we have these relationships with these devices now it's basically part of your arm right but we dwell on so much on the negative and the negative socially is of course that we're on these devices at times when we would otherwise be communicating with someone face to face and of course we're still communicating we're probably communicating more than we otherwise would but society has deemed some forms of communication preferable over others you see what I'm trying to say so talking face to face is preferable in the eyes of society over texting but he reaches to we have this computer in our pocket. We have at our fingertips a library a window into the lies lives of thousands of other people and that's where it gets sketchy right the social media sites there the reason why young people in particular are having so much trouble with this it's not it's not the phone per se it's the access to social media and the idea that all the time there are hundreds of people that have come into your life at one point or another and they're having a better time than you. I've certainly felt that way don't your little look at it people I don't post very much on Facebook or Instagram I used to post a lot when I was arguing politics on those platforms I don't so much anymore because I just I got over it. But there are a lot of people who post a lot of their lives on these sites and when you do you don't post the bad stuff that happens to you sometimes you do some some people do some people post everything but most people you know only post the good times and you see you turn on your phone you see all these good times and you're saying is so they're having good times all the time why you why can't I have good times and that makes you jealous We'll get back to that in a 2nd but the other thing about all this is that we as human beings get bored very easily correct ye in the smartphone is eliminated boredom to a great extent No more sitting at the doctor's office reading out of the magazines you you have thousands of magazines on your phone that you could be perusing millions of articles boredom is not as soul crushing as it was 10 years ago and I think we can all be pretty grateful for that can we right do you want to go back to the days when we didn't have anything to do while waiting for your car to be serviced the Chevy loop know about what about a really boring party whip it out. The phone without the phone and you're entertained but this article sees this differently and it's no surprise because too much of anything is a bad thing and we are on these devices some would say too much no doubt look I'm on mine a lot and I would be on it a lot more if I didn't have a desktop computer device in front of me pretty much all day long or if I had more friends what do you do and of course this hits young people the hardest because they're on their phones the most but were you aware that it could be leading to death as Americans are dying younger Americans are living shorter amount of time there's a new phenomenon and they're trying to figure out why Here's an article from The Washington Post from a couple days ago there's something terribly wrong Americans are dying young at alarming rates I want to hear your thoughts on this for 1467 w.p.a. I want you know what are your thoughts are we using these devices too much. Do the negatives outweigh the positives when it comes to our attack death rates from suicide drug overdoses liver disease and dozens of other causes have been rising over the past decade for young and middle aged adults driving down overall life expectancy in the United States for 3 consecutive years according to a strikingly bleak study published Tuesday this is a couple weeks ago the looked at the past 6 decades of mortality data the report published in The Journal of American Medical Association was immediately hailed by outside researchers for its comprehensive treatment of a still in a magic tread the reversal of historic of longevity by sending here or here's the findings despite spending more on health care than any other country the United States has seen increasing mortality and falling life expectancy for people ages 25 to 64. Who should be in the prime of their lives in contrast other wealthy nations have generally experienced continued progress in extending longevity although eerily or research emphasize rising mortality among non Hispanic whites in the United States the findings are sure to fuel political debate about causes and potential solutions because the geography of rising death rates overlaps to a significant extent with states in regions that are hotly contested in the run up to the 2020 presidential election about a 3rd of the estimated 33000 excess deaths that the study says occurred since 2010 were just 4 states and yes what they're Ohio Pennsylvania Kentucky and Indiana Midwest 1st 2 are critical swing states in the presidential elections. The state with the biggest percentage rise in death rates among working age people in this decade 23.3 percent is New Hampshire many factors are a play the opioid epidemic is a major driver of the worrisome numbers but far from the sole cause the study found that improvements in life expectancy largely because of lower rates of infant mortality began to slow in the 1980 s. Long before the opioid epidemic became a national tragedy some of it may be due to obesity some of it may be due to drug addiction some of it may be and this is this is something I think that's a big part of it may be due to distracted driving from cell phones there's that cell phone again right it's just that the cause has to be systemic that there's some root cause that's causing adverse health across many dimensions for working age adults. The risk of death from drug overdoses increased 486 percent for midlife women between 199-2017 increased 351 percent for men women life mortality that's a scary thing it's a scary thing when we should be living longer than ever but you can make that connection you can make that straight line. We obviously we understand we understand how big of a role opioids play in this trend right a big one opioids they are an epidemic not everybody it's not people's fault that they get hooked on them but they get hooked on them nonetheless some people do it intentionally some people accidentally and they're killing a lot of people but the others the other issues I think would are more connected to depression more connected to young people looking for a thrill in the world that they they see as being increasingly harsh the world itself and that's when you increase in the unforgiving economically speaking that's when you turned out all that's when you turn to drugs that's when you turn to suicide so when you get lost in on social media it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy How do you stop it how do you make the world a place where young people want to live without rearranging their brains without spending all their time on their phone without booze without drugs what incentive do you have because it's looking like for many people the incentive of life itself isn't serving as enough of a reason you know I have a very close friend who is in alcohol treatment right now for the umpteenth time her parents who are trying to save her life she doesn't care she keeps going back to the bottle and you know why you know why it's because she's bored she's addicted Yes but she's bored it's to fight the boredom nothing interests her anymore that's why she uses a lot of this comes down to a generation that needs to be entertained that always needs to have something stimulating them and I look I get it I'm a part of that generation I understand the anxiety of always wanting to have something going on not being able to sit still and the a generation or a d h d whatever you want to call it. We could never sit still we can never focus we grew up an hour a bunch of adults who can't sit still and can't focus I still can't sit still or focus when I'm it during the commercial breaks I'm like I'm pacing around I'm reading stuff I'm walking down the hallway just to you know stretch my legs I still have a lot of trouble watching movies or reading and you know what my default is when I can't focus on one thing I go to the phone I go to the computer I go to the Internet that is the one thing I know I can focus on social media I can look at my friends around the world what they're doing for hours on end I don't know what it is a valid but I always find it never mesmerizing. But look I understand I totally understand how depressed it can make you sometimes people like to put up pictures of themselves at their best and seeing everybody having a blast when you might not be makes it seem like you're doing something wrong doesn't it like your inadequate So where where can you go to shake those feelings well a lot of people go to drugs or alcohol or other forms of addiction that fills the hole for them temporarily How do you stop that is social media jealousy and depression are they just a sign of the times 410467 w b l It's like the David Baltimore County Dave you're on what's up there they go yeah I don't know. You know. I imagine they have kind of like you know there are you know there is you can go to you can go to therapy just like you go to rehab for drugs you go to therapy for Internet addiction. Yeah but I don't know how many people can really afford it just like a detox for Internet addiction Yeah I don't know if insurance pays for it. Yeah I mean you know a lot of people you know your business. Might you know I could check the. Internet. You know I'm always checking in on you know. What I want to not not go to dictionary. But I know there's a lot of talk about that. Didn't incarcerate people for a nonviolent. The thing is when it was someone really on like a drug a lot of times the only thing that is they get you off a lot and they put him in a rehab they could just walk out of there you know a lot of times like being in jail for like a minute is the only rehab you know it's the 1st step to rehab and I know that I love to. See the number of people who are addicted to something that go to jail and then use again when they get out I'd like to see those numbers. Oh yeah I mean nothing perfect and then there's drugs in jail. And I'm not saying people should be warehoused in jail for drug possession I'm just saying. A lot of people go on these binges and you know some people that I've encountered with you know they just like stealing all of. You know their addiction and a lot of times they have to you know detox and I'll leave for a little while you know I call it will do that prison thank you so much for the call Dave I mean prison will detox you you have no choice in the matter and they do have. You know they have recovery in prison it's a big part of what prisoner releases should indiv they die no Most prisons have it but a lot of prisons probably don't have a very good they're trying to recover these addicts but you also know for a fact that when these guys get out of jail who's waiting for them right outside the jail house the drug dealer. Andy you assume that you know when you get out of jail your life is essentially ruined what incentive do you have not to go back to the drugs you have an incentive not to do crime but what incentive do you have not to do drugs anymore because you know they're not throwing a lot of 1st time users people who are caught with you know a little bit of cocaine or a little bit of error when they're not throwing them in the in the jail for 5 years you have to do something else in order to make your way there. But yeah yet look kids are bored and when we come back we're going to talk about how the workforce is dying faster. Mobile ad I want to get into a Little Raven stuff but in the last say we were talking about smartphones we're talking about young people why they're dying early why things have gotten so dark for a lot of young people and I want to talk to want to take a call from Ray and. What's up. For your. Friend Yes tell her she needs to fall in love that's the solution people. They. Were given the previous 250 generation sense of what they should they get all your love can can come with a lot of other issues and I think that's I think but that's a big part of her actual issue is that with. Love and all that. You know not everybody can look in the right places for love it's something that a lot of people are lucky in but yeah I mean that experience leads to good experience we've always had we've always had these ways that you can improve your life and we have ways you can prove to that have been proven to. Have a reluctance to make commitments Yeah you can you can say that but I mean Also what is it about millennial that is making them that are killing them off so quickly what is it about millennial is any it has to be something about the progression of society doesn't it that's why I keep pointing to the smartphone that's why I keep pointing to these you know new fangled technologies that are made that have changed our lives in such credible way. Yeah. Yeah yeah. That they have that you're in and around Yeah I don't know what the answer is I mean unless you take a bat you backtrack on all the technology that's changing our lives thank you for the call Ray I appreciate it I mean look yeah if you could go back in time of course you wouldn't take away the cell phone of course we don't want all these changes of course we love social media social media has made our lives better in so many ways I have a. Text from Rich in promoting here it says The smartphone has been unbelievably positive in staying connected to my daughter as a divorced dad and a non-custodial parent game changer equalizer Yeah oh god that smartphone is amazing it's one of the greatest inventions we've ever come up with I mean I didn't have come up with it but you know is this is science. But at the same time it comes with. Warning signs it comes with danger it has changed the way we think and it's not really the smartphone itself I think that's changed the way we think it's the access that it gives us to things like social media All right so I think Mayor Young I think Mayor Young must listen to this show and we know that obviously look another big win for the Ravens on Sunday another convincing victory against a good team. Ravens are in the playoffs a little concerned about Lamar Jackson with a quadriceps injury whether he's going to play or not and I mean everybody's assuming that he's going to play but if they wanted to sit him for a day maybe this would be a good time they're almost guaranteed to win. Thursday night because they're playing my New York Jets and you'll hear that right here on Thursday night be filling in for Brett holler that afternoon and Jack Young Mayor Young wants the city lit up purple to show support for the team and I say we should know bludge he wants purple everywhere Here's what Mayor Young had to say from the Baltimore Sun Mayor Young once Baltimore lit purple to support Ravens we are witnessing greatness the playoffs balland Raven with the playoff bound Ravens in position to lock up the a.f.c. North and with a victory in their prime time game against the New York Jets on Thursday night Mayor Jack Young wants the city lit up purple to show the team support young is asking for residents and businesses in Baltimore to help shower the city in purple light while it's in the national spotlight good idea the department of general services started the efforts Monday by installing purple light fixtures and city building buildings while the bromo seltzer tower the War Memorial and city hall dome will be lit purple starting tonight Additionally the home page of Baltimore City's Web site now is a purple themed background we are witnessing history before our eyes Young said in a statement the radiant Ravens have been on a magical run and we want to do everything we can as a city to support the team and help keep that momentum going good Jackie and gets it on this one doesn't it. Light up the city. Young is asking for residents and businesses to support their team and understands this is something that can bring us together he understands just how big of a deal this is that we have this super team in our city and the super player in the city and he wants to utilize this team to help fix the city's issues which needs to be done but it needs to be done on a much deeper level of course than bathing the city and purple right now what else can you do have and this is a question I've been asking a lot on the show how else can you use Lamar Jackson who had 3 touchdown passes didn't break that single season rushing record because he didn't run a lot in the game on Sunday but I think they didn't I think they didn't run him intentionally I think they wanted to show that they didn't need that in order to win games and they accomplished that mission and look this is a question I've asked this before how do we use this team how do we use this uniting force to help Baltimore solve its most pressing problems those being crime and violence in the city how do we take Lamar Jacks who could run for mayor right now and win how do we use his popularity and get kids off the street and my thinking is this is just one of the things I came up with you could do it by putting billboards all over the city with Jackson's picture and other Ravens on it and that tells kids hey stay in school or stop the killing Jackson is an authority figure he needs it you know we he and the front office of the Ravens and Harbaugh's people and Lamar Jackson's agent Jack Young needs to meet with them try to figure out a way to spark the change that the city needs so badly but you've been watching them on t.v. You know you've been to the games you when you have what is probably a sure win coming up on Thursday night the timing for all this is perfect it's a perfect time to unite the whole city behind this team and Jack Young seems to be trying to do that. I hope it can work would be very interesting to see if murders if the crime rates if they do start making a deep playoff run starts to drop we had 4 murders over the weekend as Lamar Jackson breaks the record which he should do on Thursday night against the Jets team with the Jets actually have a pretty good run defense. Still what is he like 35 yards that's nothing for him so what do you think how would you like to see this team and their success utilized to help Baltimore solve some of its other issues because this is going to be a great is going to be great for business as well national attention Baltimore is going to get in what could be 2 home playoff games is going to shine a spotlight on our city it's going to bring in Taurus it's going to bring in media they're going to be patronizing our businesses. Returns a guilty verdict in a Federal Hill murder and we can expect to see a bit of snow in the Baltimore area this week these stories and more on News Radio and want to 1.5 big. Dan chose to replay that Danielle said she believed the news radio 1090 s m one a 1.5 and the w b a l mobile apps an op ed in The Baltimore Sun this morning from a writer who I'd never heard of before named Debbie Hines really a whiny little op ed and I'm going to read a bit of it phew now. Seeing Black hurt come all the hairs presidential bid. It's ironic that black women are considered the backbone of the Democratic Party and Harris as the only black woman running for president suspends her presidential bid the media panders to other contenders concluding Pete to judge who's just around one percent for Senate support from the African-Americans and Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden but it's the same coverage for Cammalleri as well because she was never there and I'll save my commentary for after I'm done with this as an African-American woman and former prosecutor I see the media making the choice for the people and not the other way around like it should be it's like the tail wagging the dog. Black women know that we must work twice as hard and twice as good did be twice as good as a white man to get half as much and Mrs Harris credentials were at least twice as good as that of Mr Blue to judge his room and really does not like. Mr Boot a judge in California has served 2 terms blah blah blah she goes over all her experiences or skill for performance skillful performance questioning Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh she made cabin on comfortable even cringe with her strong direct and intense question yeah remember that questioning wasn't that impressive it was kind of stupid to be honest with you she didn't ask him about anything even remotely related to his decision making process or his qualifications as a judge Meanwhile Mr booted judge mayor of South Bend Indiana since 2012 is a war veteran in a Rhodes scholar that's all admirable but he has no state or national experience under his belt. And South Bend with a population of about 102000 hardly qualifies as big city experience so she's going and here's where she's going to say it's racist I can just I can feel it coming Center for American Progress in its November report women of color a collective power in the United States outlines just how important African-Americans are to the presidential election sadly senator here is couldn't survive the media favoritism of Mr Blue to judge among other things perhaps of despair is going to cut it out cut in on the media cheek to cheek dance with the small town mayor she might still be in the race for president we hope the remaining candidates don't forget the African-American vote. Ever received the Democratic nomination for president must engage African-American voters particularly black women so yeah being black that's what she's saying being black heard heiresses is the argument that this. Is make it. So this is predictable it's predictable coming from the left they will take any opportunity they can to try and prove that a person of color isn't being treated fairly because of their skin tone it's an old playbook and I thought we were done using but apparently Debbie hides really likes cum all hairs and really does not like people to judge but I don't think she's looking this hard for excuses I mean I think she's looking too hard for excuses here's the reality check Ok here's what happened to Harris Harris was initially bolstered by her skin color as Democrats really like diversity and she was out there talking about bussing kids to schools which is a terrible idea that would have lost her any election any general election at playing the race card against Joe Biden she was doing pretty well. Then a couple of things happen that had nothing to do with Kemal Harris race the 1st thing was that she tripped all over herself a Medicare for all plan being the 1st one to say that people would have to lose their private insurance that was a big mistake and we've seen even the left understands that that's a nonstarter with the American people for the most part that you had Tosi Gabbert. At the 2nd debate reminding everyone that Harris was responsible for putting black people in jail for drug crimes which is a sign among many in the party of white supremacy itself so Harris wasn't her because she was a black woman she was hurt because she was a lousy candidate if there's any is there any doubt in anybody's mind that Michelle Obama could enter this campaign tomorrow and win the entire thing is there any doubt in anyone's mind at all but this is where we are still with the left it's this excuse making for personal failures and Kemal has plenty of them and the reason the reason that there are no people of color currently at the top of the Democratic primary polls is because the Democrats don't have that many talented candidates who happen to be people of color. Not a lot of people of color who want to run for president right now in the Democratic Party for whatever reason I don't know. And the article is more of an attack on Pete boojum who I mean let's face it is just a simple simply a better candidate than Kemal heiresses because he doesn't come across as angry all the time like Harris does he hasn't promised to take everyone's health insurance away and then gone back on it he does he's run a very effective campaign and he appears to be an electable guy all things being equal he also happens to be white in the happens to be gay why there isn't more from the identity politics left on potentially electing the 1st gay president is beyond me maybe maybe though it plays a role in why he's doing so well in Iowa New Hampshire who knows but you also have to remember this that black voters can be very pragmatic they were in favor of Hillary Clinton when a Barack Obama was actually in the race in the early days when they switched but they're not going to vote for someone just because that candidate is black. That's not how it works in the Democratic Party even a Democratic Party that's obsessed with race and obsessed with identity politics that's not how it goes if it did then Cory Booker and Kemal Harris would be front runners right now or at least in the game instead they've got nothing Cory Booker's still around 2 percent or one percent. Sad state of affairs for I you know you know Cory Booker's problem is he's just too nice I think he's not angry enough that's I think that's the problem with Cory Booker So yeah I this is I'm surprised this op ed got published it was it's an anti booted judge op ed it's a race baiting op ed. I do expected from the Baltimore Sun's out authorial page and I really do. All right what else do I have in the store for you to well I mean the night's almost over isn't it there's a for a new another poll showing that Hillary Clinton has emerged as the top choice of Democratic voters I have a hard time believing this as I've said this says that Hillary Clinton is the top choice for voters Mrs Clinton did 21 percent followed if she was in the race not just in general if she was in the race I guess it doesn't surprise me because she has such I name recognition Biden got 20 percent but it's not I don't think there's a real hunger for Hillary Clinton in this race I still don't believe that in terms of the Democrats I'm Dan Joseph I'll be back one last time after this listen to the sea floor show on demand 24 hours a day at w.b.
