Governor mcauliffe met with vdot crews yesterday in richmond. Up there, theyve been on the road salting, sanding, and plowing for 36 hours has snow on highways. And thats why mcauliffe had this warning to let crews do gonna feel i gotta be outside. you are fine if 3 people have died in virginia since the storm rolled in. And some 11hundred crashes have been reported by state police alone. Lets talk about the dc area and Northern Virginia now. Washington at the national zoo received 22point2 inches of snow. Thats short of an all time record, but when you get that much snow, does it really matter . Some communities west of the district such as leesburg got more than 30 inches. Getting around dc today forget it. Crews are still cleaning up roads and Metro Train Service is still suspended and an update on whether theyll run tomorrow is expected this afternoon. This video comes from even farther north in philadelphia. Their official measurement came in at 20point8 inches. The storm just stopped theres still lots to clean up there. The citys Transit System is expected to start back up this morning. As far as getting around by car thats a different story. That broke the old record set back in 2006. A travel ban that went into effect will likely be lifted within the hour. The storm has proven deadly in the city. 3 people have died from shoveling snow. But when youre in the middle of nowhere you cant do a whole lot. Thats what hundreds of people had to deal with this weekend on the pennsylvania turnpike in the western part of the state. Cars, trucks, and busses all stranded in Bedford County east of the National Guard helped get those people out of the 33 mile long traffic jam but it took more than 12 thought that wed see some vehicles, service trucks, or whatever come along, and just nothing. Watching tv, trying to keep warm. Some people finally got out of there about 24 hours later around 7 last night but their cars are still there. Students at Liberty University taking the opportunity to get some sledding in. For others, it was all work and no play. The had to go to work clearing the streets. But a lot of people there say they are enjoying the snow, because they know it wont be on the ground for long. The snow also caused some problems in tennessee. Several drivers couldnt handle the roads, and abandoned their cars on the side of the road. People even had to help out other drivers by pushing them out of the snow. Southern massachusetts got a lot less snow than a lot of other places. Places like cape cod only saw about three to six inches of snow. But wind gusts were clocking in at more than 50 miles per hour.
