Right now weve got teens in monticello. Then were subfreezing across the board with the temperatures below 32 and windchill factor feels even colder. Take a few degrees off what thermometer is reading and expect that wind to settle down over the next couple of hours. By noon, everything should feel really calm. Clouds come in quickly. Were tracking a light flurry so not a big deal, and its not covering everywhere. After sunset, south and west could see a flurry fly. New Jersey Transit workers are facing a march 13th deadline for a strike or lockout despite whats being called productive contract negotiations. This thing is far from over. Eyewitness News Reporter marcus solis is joining us live with more on what could be a big mess for so many commuters if they dont resolve this thing. Good morning, marcus. Good morning, rob, indeed. There will be a rally here this morning. Thats near the woodbridge train station by Union Members as this strike deadline looms and draws closer. Now, the union has set a march 13th deadline for a work stoppage. The union says its members have gone five years without a money and Health Care Contributions. Both sides did meet yesterday in washington. There are more talks scheduled for monday. As we said, no deal yet. A strike would impact 105,000 commuters who ride new Jersey Transit trains into the city to work each day. There are, of course, fears that a strike would lead to massive traffic tieups and delays. I hope they dont strike because that is a real consequence to them and to all of our families who have to take mass transit to earn their living. Reporter so there are some contingency plans in the works. There are five park and ride bus lots that the strike would affect new Jersey Transit rail only. There would be more buses at the Port Authority and increased ferries and increased p. A. T. H. Trains. Still, some are predicting the delays could be up to two hours to cross the hudson into the city. So the contract talks continue, and there will be that rally here later this morning. Solis, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thank you so much. This morning, police are searching for the person who opened fire outside of a queens nightclub shooting a livery driver in the head. Robert castillo is in Critical Condition. His suv crashed into a pole after he was shot. This is Surveillance Video that you will only see on Eyewitness News. It shows the crash early yesterday morning. Castillo, who is 37 years old had just dropped off several passengers at a club. They went inside but ran back out because they were being chased by the gunman. They jumped back into castillos suv. We believe that the people that were being shot at were inside of his vehicle at the time. Instead of the person hitting the people he was he hit mr. Castillo, the driver. Investigators say castillo is not a licensed livery driver but has been working for a there has been violence at that club before. About a year ago, three people were slashed during a hiphop performance. Also new this morning, police are searching for a robbery suspect whos been targeting banks in queens. Take a look at these pictures showing the man police say robbed a bank in astoria yesterday afternoon. Police say he demanded cash from the teller and then took off. The same man is suspected of robbing a chase bank in Oakland Gardens a little more than a month ago. Turning now to politics. Well, the turmoil and ongoing war amongst republicans and president ial candidates impact a handful of critical primary elections today or will it spark more voter interest . Kansas, kentucky, maine, and nebraska are preparing to caucus today. A fifth state, louisiana, will hold a primary. The Republican Party is still sometimes a raunchy debate. Mudslinging. The husband of a woman found dead more than five years ago. He is in jail this morning. Joseph jones who seemed devastated when we interviewed him back in 2010 is now charged we spoke to jones back then, and he has the details now. Reporter joseph, how does it feel after all this time . Joseph jones said nothing as detectives led him away. Back then, he couldnt stop talking. I can barely sleep. I cant eat. Every time i eat, i throw up and get sick. Reporter it was days before christmas in 2010 when the body of nicole tessa turned up about a football field away from the home she shared with jones and their 3yearold son. Jones claimed tessa disappeared days earlier but waited two days to report her missing. It didnt take long for a police dog to find her body. [unintelligible] i dont even know how to explain to him that a caring, loving mother who tried to do everything she could for her children and her family and everything. Reporter when investigators took jones in for questioning tessa had been arguing over drugs when he left in a huff and she left their son with a neighbor. At the time, the couple argued all of the time. It doesnt make any sense. And that was josh reporting. The details are expected to come out at his arraignment on monday. Today, a candlelight vigil will be held to remember a College Student who died in a possible hazing at a college upstate. The friends and family of bradley doily will march to a nearby park where they will release balloons. Doily was 21 years old and played basketball at buffalo state. He died last month. Cops ruled his death suspicious. Toxicology results have not yet been released. Also today, a Memorial Service will be held in texas for a former nypd officer david hoffer was shot during a gun bat well a suspect near dallas. On monday, a Memorial Service will be held at st. Patricks cathedral in manhattan. Bill bratton is mourning the death of his father. He was 89 years old. He served in the navy during world war ii. He later worked double shifts at a post office and a Metal Plating shop to support his family. He also worked the docks of boston as a longshoreman. In this mornings health alert, a curious connection between a lack of sleep and getting the munchies. Then we get a spring preview. Brooklyn feels like 13 right now. Feels like the upper teens and low 20s in a lot of places. Windchill is a factor as you head out the door this morning. It doesnt stay that way. Well see the temperatures coming up quickly in the sunshine. Temperatures will stop in the 40s. The light northerly winds will improve. Already feeling the edge of the clouds here. As that happens, were dragging in a chance for snow. On the futurecast, look how little of it shows up. By 2 00, we have the clouds around here. 6 00 at sunset. Weve got no precipitation, but late tonight, after midnight into the Early Morning hours, theres a little bit of flurry activity. Its something to watch. Weve got warm air pushing in, and were 15 to 30 degrees above average. That puts us in record territory. 42 today. We drop to 32 with that isolated snow shower and then to end the weekend, our snow showers will be just very flurrylike until 6 30. Then we have sunshine in the afternoon, 44 degrees. Heres the accuweather seven day forecast. Were up to the 50s on monday. 60s by tuesday. There it is. Wednesday. Were going tore 70, and thursday 50s with friday 64 degrees. I want to share a little bit of the trip with you because a lot of it as always, can be traced back to the weather, as you know. I like to bring the weather back into play. Please. On vacation, we went to kauai, which is the northwestern island of oahu. We went on this trail, see how muddy it is . I did it with my son, whos almost 18, and it was incredible. 22 miles total. Backpacker magazine called it one of the ten most dangerous in the u. S. Outside magazine called it one of the 20 most dangerous hikes in the world. Sounds like a vacation. At points, this trail became as narrow as two shoes. Really . And other parts, look at the cliff dropoff. Oh incredible views, and while we were there, that was the destination of the hike right there. Highest waves that theyve had in 30 years. They were able to have the big eddie surf tournaments that they havent had in seven years. It was incredible. Every step of that hike for 11 miles in and 11 miles back was a challenge from mud to extreme inclines. Then they have something called the crawlers ledge, which you almost rock climb across. Now, thats where you posted the picture that said danger, and you were showing that was another place called queens bath, which was extremely dangerous during the winter. Because theyve had the high surf there and people go down and sort of sunbathe amongst the rocks. Even while we were there, they had a death. Different places are dangerous. So you have to research. I spent a lot of time researching the trail before i went on it. Our whole crew went to the part that was very safe. We didnt get on the ledge. You had a fascinating trip. Was it relaxing . Time own vacation. Dont you hike all of the time on vacation . All the time. I do, from the hotel to the tiki bar. [ laughter ] i love the pictures on social media. Lots of beautiful pictures. New Jersey Transit workers are planning to rally this morning. They are facing a march 13th deadline for a strike or a lockout despite whats being called productive contract negotiations. Reporter good morning. 4,000 rail workers have gone five years without a contract and are asking what they call for modest pay raises. It will be a rally here near the station at 11 00 this morning. This affects about 4,000 workers. They set that deadline march 13th. There were talks yesterday in washington both sides meeting. There are more talks scheduled for monday, but as of now, there is no deal. Again, money and Health Care Contributions are the sticking points as both sides try to work out a deal and commuters certainly hoping that something can be worked out. 105,000 commuters take new city every day. So the hope is that a strike can be avoided to avert some of these massive tieups and delays that people are anticipating. Some have said they can take two hours to across the hudson river. There are some contingency plans that have been put in place should there be a strike. Five park n. Ride lots have been established. More buses will be available at the Port Authority, and there will be additional ferry and p. A. T. H. Train service. Again, no the sides will meet again on monday. Simpsons former property. Here we go. Its being tested to determine if it was the murder weapon and the killings of simpsons ex wife and her friend nearly 22 years ago. Preliminary assessments show that the knife found during demolition of simpsons former home is likely not the murder weapon. Investigators say the knife is simply too small to be the murder weapon. Cops, though, still testing for dna just in case. Historians have the right to reassess any case. If they conclude that this is evidence that proves different from the verdict, the people have the right to know that. Now theres word that a now retired cop told at least one lapd supervisor that he had been given the knife by a construction worker. The supervisor, though, concluded it was no big deal, at least to him, because simpson had been acquitted and the case had been closed. Also, new information this morning in the civil case against bill cosby. His alleged victims are accusing cosbys lawyers of stonewalling them. Attorneys for seven alleged judge to force cosby to respond to pretrial inquiries and document requests. They say they first served their requests back on december 2nd but have received no documents or any signed answers, either. The nypd is reminding new yorkers to remain vigilant while riding a subway after a man with a knife was arrested on a brooklyn train. This is cell phone video showing that man on the q train. This is thursday. The woman who shot it said the people on the train were unable to do anything about it. Paul isaac was arrested shortly after the incident, but it comes just days aof Police Arrested a man in harlem, accused of carrying a knife at the 2 train station. All of the people sitting on the train were ignoring him, trying to do the whole new yorker thing where you just block it out. That is a tendency to be checked out in this city, and thats not the best strategy for safety. Now police are going underground to remind new they are handing out fliers calling subway riders not to hesitate to call them if they see something suspicious. And catching a flasher hiding out in a School Bathroom composing himself to kids. Police released surveillance images of the suspect. They say he went into a bathroom at Maria Regina High School last week and got undressed. He held the door open and flashed people who were simply walking by. Some guy we didnt know came in, and he was in the bathroom. He cracked the door open and was, like, naked. So my friends ran and he ran out. When my sister told me, i was scared a little bit that, like, anyone can get in, kind of. Wow. The man was last seen driving away in that blue vehicle you see right there on your screen. I went out and visited him. He is the nicest guy in the world and works in this great place money we did the story a few weeks before his birthday. On march 2nd, a few days ago, and turned 105 years old. Again, the worlds oldest barber up in orange county. He was treated to a cake and lawmakers. Hes been cutting hair since he was just 12 years old. He started to help make money for the family at the time. He says he has no intention of retiring. And hes good. Look at those sharp lines. Let me tell you, the hands were steady, and hes good. I think ive seen his barber shop. Is it kind of in a strip mall . Yes. I have a couple of friends who get their haircut there. People who grow there say he gives a good cut. I said what do you do to celebrate . He said, come to work. 105 is awesome. Hes been the worlds oldest barber now since he was, like, 98. So for years now, hes been the oldest. So every year, he kind of reclaims the throne. Happy birthday. Weve got sunshine to start. Thats good for anybodys day. The clouds come in, and it wont be as brutally cold as yesterday. Well have less wind. Temperatures are expected in the low 40s. As we get started out there, heres what the skies look like. Weve got blue skies overhead. North winds are currently 7 miles per hour, expecting them to not only go calm but switch out in the southwest, which will add to our warmth later this afternoon. Here we grow with the headlines. Cold start outside. Woo he have windchills right now that are in the teens and low 20s. Sunshine gives way to clouds and even a trace of snow west. Early on sunday morning, right now, im thinking its isolated snow showers now and cant rule out the possibility of a quick race especially south and west of the city. That would be 2 00 a. M. To 7 00 a. M. The window that that could occur. We get a spring preview next week. In fact, record warmth is possible. It feels like 14 degrees in brooklyn to the possibility of 70 degrees by the middle of the week which would go down into the history books. Bundle up, expect clouds to come in, and it will be overcast by the afternoon. Temperatures will be slightly below the average this time of year, which is in the low 40s. Then we have a gradual warmup. Radar and satellite, not much to see. The changes that happen today are first these clouds are pushing in from the west ahead of that system that could produce light snow. Really falling apart. We get also a change in the winds out of the southwest. Warmup. Move in. Cloudy. Late tonight after midnight, here comes this weak system and disturbance coming through. See what i mean . Between midnight 2 00 a. M. And 6 00 a. M. , there its a little bit of activity. Maybe one of those bursts could bring the light trace of snow, but thats about it. I expect flurries in those tuesday into wednesday, the jet stream takes a total trip up north and we could be 15 to 30 degrees above the average for this time of year. That puts us at the potential for breaking records through the middle of the week. So today, sun to clouds, 42 for the high, and then its overcast that isolated snow showers, maybe a few floweries fly early tomorrow morning. Its out of here by 8 00 a. M. Then weve got sunshine and 44 for the afternoon high on sunday. Monday, mild and sun breaks 54. Thats feeling good, 54 degrees. Tuesday feels like april in the mid60s. Then we could break records on wednesday with 70 degrees. The record on that date is 69 degrees. Thursday and friday, temperatures are still very mild. 54 on thursday and friday. 64 looks like the next ten days to two weeks, weve got very mild weather. Meaning the temperatures are above average. There is a hint that there could be a cold spell as we close out march. What do they say, out like a like this is similar to the groundhog. Whatever. Thats i allot of animals to tell us about. What im saying is well have to watch it carefully because it is a volatile time of year where we could still get snow but you are also breaking record warmth. This warmup this week will be a preview of whats ahead for us. Its generally been a mild winter. It has been compared to the last two. Whenever you see 70 on the sevenday forecast, it is a psychological blanket. It just kind of warms me up a little bit. Hows this for a psychological blanket. 54 sounds warm to us. Happening today, transit workers are mobilizing to get negotiations continue. Where this ends up, no one knows just yet. Marcus solis joins us live from woodbridge with more on this story. Hi, marcus. Reporter good morning, rob. Yes, this weekend the rally, next weekend could be the picket line as the strike deadline looms. These are 4,000 new Jersey Transit rail workers. The union has set march 13 as the work stoppage deadline. The union says its members have gone five years without a contract. At issue is money and Health Care Contributions. Both sides did meet in washington, d. C. There are additional talks scheduled for agreement yet, and so the talks continue. That threat of the strike looms. It would impact some 105,000 commuters who ride new Jersey Transit trains into the city for work each day. There are, of course, fears that a strike would lead to some bigtime traffic tieups, delays crossing the hudson river. I hope they dont strike because that is a real consequence to them and to all of our families that have to take mass transit to earn their living. Reporter here is the contingency plan thats been put in place. There will be five additional buses. There will be additional buses at the Port Authority bus terminal, and there will be an and p. A. T. H. Trains, which wouldnt be affected by walkouts, but again, those new Jersey Transit trains could affect some hundred thousand commuters. The talks continue. The union will be rallying later today. Solis, channel 7 Eyewitness News. New this morning, police are searching for a robbery suspect whos targeting banks in queens. Take a look at the pictures showing the man police say robbed a bank in astoria yesterday afternoon. Police say he demanded cash from the teller and then took off. The same man is suspected of robbing a chase bank in Oakland Gardens a little more than a month ago. Rate now, Cardinal Dolan is honoring the victims of an attack in yemen where four nuns were brutally murdered. Gunmen stormed a retirement home run by catholic nuns yesterday killing more than a dozen people. Four members of the missionary of charity, the religious order being remembered. Also, friends and family will gather today to say a final farewell to the High School Student who died while she was on a missionary trip in Funeral Services will be held today for 15yearold lanese moore. She was working to build a school and soccer field when she drowned in the hotel pool. A classroom at the school where she was working has been renamed already in her honor. Also today this morning, a long island man is in Police Custody charged with his wifes murder. This happened more than five years ago, and her body was found. Joseph jones was arrested last night in suffolk county. His wife, nicole tessa was found dead near their home in patchogue in at the time, jones told police he and his 31yearold wife got into an argument about drugs, and he left in a huff. When he returned, she was gone. Eyewitness news spoke to him at the time as police searched for his wifes killer. All right, moving on to will all of the turmoil and what some are calling a brewing civil war in the gop and the candidates for president , will all of that impact a handful of primaries and caucuses set for today, or will it spark more voter interest across the country . Voters in four states, kansas, kentucky, maine, and nebraska, are preparing to caucus today. Meantime, a fifth state, louisiana, will hold its primary. The Republican Party still reeling after a raucous, even raunchy debate that involvely devolved into a lot more name calling and mudslinging just a few nights back. Meanwhile, donald trump, still a frontrunner,pulling out of his appearance today at the conservative convention known as cpac. Meantime, democrats are going to caucus in kansas and nebraska today. Investigators say castillo is not a licensed livery driver but has been working for a bronx car service for about the last month. The club where the shooter opened fire is no stranger to violence. Nearly a year ago, three people were slashed there during a hip hop performance. We have now information this morning on the recovery of a teenaged girl who was hurt during a gun rampage. 14yearold abigails family says show has taken her first step since that shooting two weeks ago. Six people died, including her grandmother. The girls injuries were so and doctors were worried that she would be brain dead. The family says she is making unbelievable improvement. Floridas governor is expected to sign into lawn a new bill that requires ten out of 12 jurors to recommend execution in order for it to be carried out. This comes after the u. S. Supreme court ruled floridas current law unconstitutional because it allows the judge to reach a different decision than jurors. The court cases across the state were put on hold after the supreme courts ruling. Turns out, being back on earth after a year in zero gravity takes some adjustment. Astronaut scott kelly is having some unique issues with life back on solid ground, including what he says sensitive skin. This is the march 13th strike deadline loaning, that is the date that has been set by the Union Representing 4,000 rail workers who say they have not had a raise in five years. They have been working without a contract for five years. They are asking for a raise. Both sides meet and did talk in washington d. C. Yesterday. They will be meeting again on monday, but as of now, no agreement in place. Of course 105,000 commuters trains every day to get into the city.
