We have breaking news in midtown. A horrific accident has led to the death of a Young College student from new jersey. Police say 20yearold man fell from interior scaffolding at the Four Seasons Hotel on 57th street while he was attempting to take some photographs. Eyewitness News Reporter kala rama is live now on the scene with an update for us. Kala . Reporter well, lori, that family of the victim has a lot of questions for police. They simply dont believe that he was here at the four seasons just to take a picture they say. I just talked to the family of 20yearold Conner Cummings. They say hes a photography buff and theyre trying to get to the bottom of just how this happened. Police say he and his 18year old friend were climbing scaffolding when he fell nine stories down an interior shaft just after 11 00 last night. Scene. His friend climbed down to get help and he is now being interviewed by detectives. Conners aunt says this just doesnt add up. Were trying to get answers. They said that he went up the elevator and then went up a stairway and went out on the balcony. But the cops arent saying exactly what happened. And i know the medical examiner was up there. I mean, hes the young kid. Hes a good kid. I mean they werent drinking. They were taking a picture. Reporter conners family says that he is not the daredevil type. Doing climbing on scaffolding. But they know that hes a photography buff so theyre looking for more answers from police. Conner is from rockaway, new jersey and he was attending college in massachusetts. Meanwhile security the cornerstone of the success here and what revelers will see here in times square in terms of the show of force from the nypd will be unprecedented. Were talking about more 6,000 members of the nypd all assigned here to times square and some of the officer will be in uniform and heavily armed and others will be blending into the crowd. The idea is to make sure revelers feel as safe and as comfortable as possible. Of course coming on the heels of the terrorist attack in paris and then San Bernardino, california, certainly thats in the back of many minds. So the nypds counterterrorism effort has been enhanced and stepped up significantly. Meanwhile though, there are no known threats right now against the city. These guys do a great job. Reporter ken, it will certainly be a tough new year for a family from new jersey after a 20yearold man fell to his death here at the Four Seasons Hotel while just trying to take a picture. We just talked to the family here of 20yearold Conner Cummings. Hes a photography buff. Police say he and his 18year old friend were climbing scaffolding inside when he fell nine stories down and interior shaft just after 11 00 last night. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His 18yearold friend did climb down try to get some help but right now, he is being interviewed by detectives. Detectives also recovered photography equipment that they say the 20yearold and 18year old were using by conners aunt he was with one friend. And be if friend called and the friend called his mother. I dont know how long conner was laying there at all before they even called the police. The police are inside. I asked them one said a little longer, one said not too long but i cant like get an absolute answer. Reporter Conner Cummings family says that he is not a daredevil and they just dont understand how this could have happened. They hope to get more answers from that 18yearold friend. Investigators say an employee tried to break up a fight between two customers inside the restaurant on 58th and 3rd this happening last night. Thats when another man stepped in and slashed the worner in the leg with a box cutter and involved in the fight. Both the victims were treated and released from the hospital. Still not clear though what sparked the original brawl. Nypd officer joseph lemm killed by a suicide bomber in afghanistan was honored in a farewell by his many colleagues and friends and his grieving family. Weve got dense fog this morning with mild temperatures and fog burns off and that fog burns off to sunshine. And then cooler temperatures for this weekend. But normal temperatures for the weekend and maybe even warmer than normal. 45 long island and 42 bridge fort and 46 down the shore. Visibilities to the north and northwest are reduced in some of the fog and now morristown is two miles. 3 around newburg. Visibilities are improving this morning.
