With Police Officers and commandos deployed across paris determined to secure the city and to track down accomplices. All of the attackers were killed. Seven who blew themselves up and an 8th terrorist shot to death by responding officers. What the terrorists want is with fear. Afraid of. But faced with this fear, theres a nation that defends itself and mobilizes itself in which once again will be able to overcome the terrorists. The International Response was immediate. With antiterrorism officers from several European Countries converging on france, to assist in the investigation. And president obama offering u. S. Support. On paris. Its an attack not just on the but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. And this is a fast moving investigation. A syrian passport has been found on the body of one of the terrorists. The french president is now promising a global man hunt to the accomplices. Again, to recap the latest numbers now, we have 127 confirmed dead. 300 hospitalized. 80 of them said to be in michelle, rob. Thank you so much. Eyewitness News Reporter, jim dolan arrived in france just moments ago. And hes joining us live. You just got on the ground there. This morning . One can only imagine. Reporter yeah, rob, you cant imagine. Attacks yesterday. Most people have decided to stay home. Many shops are open, but empty right now. All the museums, schools, mass transit also very slow this afternoon. Back here is the theater. 80 people were killed there yesterday. It is a city, it is a nation trying to figure out how they are going to respond to this. But really, just mourning and attacks yesterday. Of mourning. The first of three as so many people here try to grapple with what has happened here. This is an open city, much like new york, and right now it seems almost like a police everywhere and most people really choosing, it is paris. Most people choosing just to stay home and be with family and loved ones today. The things we have been hearing just a few minutes ago is that americans are among those hurt. Does it seem to have been, bataclan, the nightclub where the shootings happened, did that seem to be a target because of an american heavy metal band was playing and maybe americans in attendance . Reporter well, who knows, but that is the sense here, of course, that it is a place, you know, where westerners hang out. Where Many Americans would be likely to be. Obviously, people in europe enjoy the heavy metal music. The american style of heavy metal music. A lot of westerners here at this club. That is the presumption here. Thats why it was targeted. And the message from isis. They said that this was a center of prostitution, this area. You know, that is the feeling here that it was targeted simply because of western open values. And jim, last question here. President hollande called this an act of war. Are you getting any sense on the ground of what people think may come next as france decides how to respond to this reporter yeah, i can tell you what the knee jerk reaction is of some of the few people i have spoken to here. And you know, it is not good. They want to mobilize the military. The military has in fact been mobilized here in paris. But many people here responding as if this was a call to war. That this needs to be responded to and very strong terms. But again, this just happened. People still trying to grapple with it. Trying to get their feelings around what happened here. You can understand why many people here would be so angry and hurt. Jim dolan, thank you so much for joining us live from paris this morning. Just down the street from the nightclub where the terrorist attack occurred. Thank you. And jim, of course, stay safe, please. He mentioned americans, we have learned, no americans have been killed in the attack, those injuries are not life threatening. Security at the french consulate and across the city here in new york. The departments new counterterrorism unit is ready to respond to any threat. Eyewitness News Reporter is live for us at the french consulate and he has the very latest. Marcus. Reporter indeed, michelle. This is one of the first locations the nypd responded to. A presence that continues to see an officer responding outside of the front door on avenue. But at times, we have also seen as we did last night, heavily armed units standing guard on 5th avenue. This is part of the response that routinely happens after incidents here and abroad. The nypd fanning out to include high traffic, heavily Populated Areas like times square, Grand Central terminal. Penn station, those places all saw stepped up, highly visible the nypd deploying units to locations with any kind of connection to france. So whether it be a french government outpost, a french owned business, the nypd is senting units there and the Department Says this is all being done out of an abundance of caution and the mayor says the city is well prepared. The fact is, we have very quickly. Again, with sufficient training to address it. I think thats the model we have to depend on going forward. Besides the Police Presence, theres a growing memorial here. We have seen people dropping off flowers throughout the morning and theres a glass of red wine in front of candles in the blue, red, and white of the french flag. A flag that flies at half staff outside a consulate that has that growing memorial and also that Police Presence. Were live in the upper east side, channel 7 Eyewitness News. All right, marcus, thank you. And if you have loved ones in france and of course, concerned about their well being, the state department does have a the number is on your screen. 8884074747. And joining us now to talk about security measures here in new york city following the attacks in paris is former nypd commissioner, ray kelly. Thank you for being here. Good to be with you. What this says to me as i watched the coverage all day yesterday and hearing the news this morning, not just paris has a clear idea of the reach, the ambition, and the capabilities of isis. Do we not . Absolutely. We havent seen a terrorist organization like this with the resources, with the manpower that they have. And of course, with the inspirational ability that they have. We have seen them matastasis in pakistan, they are in afghanistan, they are in north africa. So, they definitely are a force that well have to deal with for a long time to come. They were talking about syria. The terrorists when they were speaking in Perfect French without an accent. Some would say okay then, syria is the problem. Its been a problem for awhile. What does that mean . Does that mean that these mean were home grown . France . Maybe grew up in france and were rat call radicalized. They were citizens or born in france. The reality is, the french have had a problem with a growing radical muslim element in france now for quite awhile. It has the highest percentage of muslim citizens of any country in europe. And of course, Charlie Hebdo, we saw the attack, the attempted attack on a train. If that had taken place, if it wasnt for the heroism of the americans tackling this individual, you would have seen tremendous carnage. That individual had nine magazines with him and an ak47 rival 47 rifle on a moving train. A terrible event. Those american heros stopped him. What is also sobering, those over the last two years here in america, 70 americans have been arrested for plotting to conspire with isis. This is a problem in our country as well. Couldnt we see Something Like this happen here . Especially considering the soft targets that they targeted last night . Yeah. Unfortunately yes. Here in new york city, we have done more than any other city in the world to protect ourselves from a terrorist attack. But there are no guarantees. We have an open city. The population goes to 10 million a day during the business week. So definitely, there are tremendous vulnerabilities and something that we have to just steal ourselves to. Again, we ask people to be alert. Look at the world through the prizm of 9 11 and the traumatic events weve had here. Its a dangerous world and a changed world. You know so much about how we have stayed safe here in new york, you were a big part of that. To what extent does these targets speak to you . I mean, these were soft targets. We have talked about that. The fact that americans may have been in this club, this nightclub. Certainly places where you arent going to have armed guards out front in any city in the world. Yeah, i mean, endless number of, you know, soft targets. And obviously where people gather, you have to be concerned. And i think as far as professional sports are concerned, i think theres been a lot of focus on that, but there are other events that perhaps less so. So, maybe well get a revisiting of that issue with some sort of lower level events. But its, you know, its a changed world that we have to change. We have to be flexible to adjust to these as much as we can. And its scary. As we talked about before we went on air, we dont know the answer. We dont want to live in a prison state and because you fanning out all over the world. There doesnt seem to be an easy or right or complete answer to this. Thats right, very complex problem and if you go to war, some people are advocating, who you go to war with, where do you conduct . Theres no easy answers. This is going to be with us for a long time. And again, no credible threat in new york last night or as we speak. All right, thank you very much. Thank you. Now just the last half hour, we have learned that french officials decided to close the eiffel tower indefinitely. Armed guards stand ready to deal with any security incident at that world famous landmark. Officials made the decision to close down disney land europes leading terrorist attractions. We are showing you a picture right now of some of the headlines from the papers and the publications in paris. This time were talking war. And just talking about horror and carnage in paris. The president of france gave an Early MorningNews Conference and blamed isis and then minutes later isis officially claimed responsibility. It is so reminscent of those days after 9 11 when george time, said active war. We know where that took us. You have to wonder, is france gearing up for the same kind of retaliation . What will that look like . What will that bring the United States into . There is so many Foreign Policy ripple effects that will come from this. Not an easy war to wage. I think that is really the point of this. So hard to understand that everyone that was targeted just totally innocent. A concert. A soccer game. Night. Young people out having a good time. Very, very, very hard to yeah. Weather is a welcome distraction this morning. It is. It could take your breath away. There. The latest reading coming in from newark is 40 miles per hour. 37mileperhour wind reading. There. And you will feel it. A lot more chilly than its been the last couple of days. The temperatures will reflect that, or the feelslike will be in the low love 30s in some areas north and west of the city. Low 40s in the burroughs all day long. Watch out for the wind. Yeah. Layer. At the park 35 humidity. Winds fluctuating between 15 to 35 miles per hour. Pressure is Holding Steady right now. Also reports of light snow from sullivan, ulster, duchess county. York. Thank you so much. Looking out on the back deck. A sign not only of the season, but also the strength of the winds from across the great lakes. This northwest wind, which is very, very cold out of canada from the north, comes across the warmer lake waters. As that happens we get the little streamers. That happened overnight to the Early Morning hours and that produced some light snow for the northern counties. It doesnt reach us. We get the wind and the chill from it. We have wind gusts of 35 miles per hour. A lot of locations, teterboro, white plains both at the official reporting stations there, and then in queens at laguardia 37mileperhour wind as well. Looking across the afternoon we expect these winds to taper off so the wind chill factor, the feels like mid 30s 40s through the afternoon. Its just going to be chilly all day long today. Below average temperatures dont last very long. Basically just today. Then we are right back in the swing of above average and that warm trend that we started november with is back in a big way. A few flakes that were far north and west, they dont last. The feelslike freezing temperatures are with us for the early part of the day and then end later on this evening, but winds leave us and we turn out to have a beautiful sunday afternoon to close out the weekend. Early next week the pattern is nice as well. The entire eastern seaboard affected by high pressure. That keeps the clouds away. A north wind in town. By tomorrow morning mild afternoon allowing for that westerly component to bring us temperatures that are at or near the average. 58 to close the weekend. No showers expected. We are rain free not only today, tomorrow, and into monday, but we could go to the middle of the week before the next chance for rain. That will be a strong cold front country. Really plenty of time to scheme one. City. 30s in the suburbs. Tomorrow the best way of the weekend, i think. 58 degrees with a few high clouds. Less of a chill around as well. The winds start to taper off. Per hour for the wind speeds on the futurecast. Part of next week aboveaverage its mild through wednesday. As we mentioned, no rain until maybe the middle to late part of next week. Thank you, amy. Eyewitness news saturday morning, cities across the u. S. Remembering the lives lost last ez el a. Also, flags outside the president s home in france lowered to halfstaff today. French president Francois Hollande met with top government and Security Officials there this morning. He says these are the worst attacks in france since world war ii. He called this an act of war and has vowed to strike back. Weve also learned minutes ago that one gunman of the eight terrorists involved in this has been identified. Good morning. Thanks for being with us. I am rob nelson. We have Live Team Coverage on the attacks in paris. Eyewitness News Reporter jim dolan live in paris where police are conducting an investigation. Live in the newsroom with breaking new details. 127 confirmed dead. Revised numbers. At least 200 hospitalized. 70 in critical condition. To be clear, these numbers have changed and will continue to change. But this was a highly coordinated, lowtech attack. Precisely what authorities have been bracing for here in new york and around the world. Militants with isis now claiming french soil since the second world war. The french president today called them bar barionsions and is declaring it an act of war. The death toll 127 and likely, sadly, to rise. The Emergency Rooms of paris now overwhelmed with the injured. Most of them with gunshot wounds. The attacks were carefully planned and carried out by a small army of militants in every corner of the french capital. Restaurants, bars, sidewalk cafes, outside the National Soccer stadium, and inside a concert hall where gunmen blasted their way in, took the audience hostage, and massacred up to 100 of them. Stunned survivors emerged into the street and couldnt believe they were still alive. Someone managed to finally open the access for the roof and we all rushed to the roof where we were waiting. And then a man, who had his apartment facing the roof, opened his window and he let us all crawl through. And we stayed in there, in the dark, waiting for things to pass. But we could keep on hearing the noise of explosions, shouting, guns and screaming without really knowing what was going on. Reporter all the attackers were killed. Seven who blew themselves up. An eighth terrorist shot to death by responding officers. One has been identified. French authorities are convinced there were accomplices and the master minds remain at large at this hour. Michelle, rob. Thank you so much. The people of paris are in mourning, still reeling from the night of terror. Eyewitness news report are jim dolan is live in paris where multiple investigations are now underway. Jim. Reporter the investigation . Its infancy. It is centered on accomplices. The eight people who were actively involved in the attacks are all dead. So investigators now trying to figure out who was behind them. Who facilitated them and who made all this happen. Right back here beyond this line of Police Vehicles the batacian theatre, 80 people were killed there last night. I want to just read from the isis statement for just a moment here. It says they targeted the Bataclan Conference Center where hundreds of appost ates had gathered in a prostitution party. It was a concert. It was young people out enjoying a night many of them from the United States. Many of them westerners. I spoke just a few moments ago to a woman from new york city. She lives here in paris, lives right down the street from this. There are people she knows who were in the band. People at local restaurants. She does not know where they are. And that is paris this morning. Many people trying to get their heads around this and trying to find out what happened to their friends and loved ones who were in this area last night. Jim, what can you tell us about removal of bodies from we have heard from another correspondent on the ground earlier this morning that there were still bodies inside of the concert hall. Is that what you are hearing . Reporter yeah. There is still so much work to be done here, michelle, on every level obviously in the investigation. Obviously, the logistics, the grizzly logistics of cleaning this area up now. The police are not giving a lot of information about this. Hall. Here. Trees. There. So many others tried to get to the top. Tried to get out from the ground floor. It was a disturbing it was a difficult scene here. And a lot of people gathering out on the street when they heard the sirens and they heard the gunshots. Done. A lot of people trying to get their heads around what happened here last night. The scary part to me is that paris just went through Something Like this back in january. We saw those attacks at the publication Charlie Hebdo. 17 People Killed in that. Less than a year later they are dealing with this. It has to be a city that clearly is rattled now that its become this epicenter for terrorism. Such a target. Reporter and the Charlie Hebdo shootings were just a few blocks from where im standing right here. This is centered in a very small area. The people who live in this area and who come to this area have seen an awful lot over the last several months. Yeah, its starting to rattle them had. Of course, people trying to figure out what the government is going to do it to respond to all of this. I am sure the government is what its response will be as well. But that is france right now. That is paris today. Trying to determine how they this open society. All right. Jim dolan joining us live from the streets of paris this morning. He talked about the trendy area in which he is standing. The 11th arrondissment. Those districts. This is the trendiest, the youngist, the hippest, most fun arrondissment in paris. They targeted most of the popular areas in paris. Not necessarily it tourist areas. Including Prime Minister the u. K. To brace for casualties while also condemning what he called the, quote, brutal and right now the Terror Threat level in the u. K. Is set at severe. That is the second highest level. Again, at this point we do not believe that any americans were killed. There are some injuries to americans, but they are not believed to be life threatening. Again, still so much unknown at joining us to talk about security measures here in new york city is terrorism expert nick cassel. As the details came out about what happened, specifically as michelle was talking about a second ago, the soft targets, what does that it will tell you about isis capabilities and perhaps what it means in they decide to bring these kinds of attacks here to u. S. Soil . Well, they are going to. They are requesting to bring they are going to bring attacks here because they succeeded in three things. They have the ability to radicalized nationallized or born here citizens to get them to act upon terror. Number two, they practiced in mumbai, they practiced at Charlie Hebdo. They got to down. What do they do . Lowtech attack. All they had here were a few bombs and guns. Distraction, first the attack at the stadium, diversion. You have the resources respond there. And then they go for their prime attack, which was the theater. Thats the way theyve developed it. Thats the way theyre going to continue doing it. Lowtech. Already 127 dead. 300 wounded. Those may die. Thats the future. Doing it until its thwarted by us. How we could respond to it and cure the problem. Until then, we have to watch out. So you are not surprised at all when we heard that these terrorists with guns were screaming in Perfect French with no accent whatsoever as if they had grown up there, because they probably did . Right, right. They have, you know, we have to realize this, that in a war against isis, we have to at areas . Getting people social media plays a role that . Tremendous. That. How they are able to do this. Another key dont here is how were these cells able to attack . How were they able to do that . Or the french werent able to intercept them by communication. We didnt have the french didnt have an informant in there or an undercover. Those are the three key components to disrupt cells. Different kind of war against isis and will the u. S. Get sucked into that . You know, thats a different quandary. You think that isis wants to attack and inflict casualties for the purpose of changing the thats what terrorism is meant to do. However, isis here wants to suck western militaries. Their grounds. So how do you respond to this, not to fall into their trap of going in there and fighting them on their home soil, right . And respond to this. Send a message. If you do it, were going to try to stop you. Were going to reengage you. But were going to punish you. Lets not forget 70 americans, americans in the last two years have been arrested for plotting to conspire with isis. Including in new york city. I want to leave folks on that sobering note. Thank you, nick. Next on Eyewitness News saturday morning, a show of solidarity. A u. S. Sports team pausing to pay tribute to the people of we pause to mourning those victims from todays attacks in paris. We ask that you join us in remembering these individuals and their loved ones. The u. S. Mens soccer team joined in a moment of silence at a world cup qualifying match in st. Louis. They paused before their game at Busch Stadium yesterday to honor the victims. The tragedies in paris. Busch stadium and other sports venues, of course, stepped up security measures after news of the attacks. It is part of a collective effort to keep fans and athletes safe. Everyone going to be wondering about safety the next few days here and abroad. We had a lot of heavy talk this morning. Lets talk about the wonderful stretch of weather. Chiller . It could take your breath away because the winds have been strong. 35 miles per hour. Our top wind speeds. And it feels colder out there. Make sure up. Lots of bright sunshine. Temperatures dont recover until tomorrow. Right now 37mileperhour winds. Thats the latest reading from laguardia airport. So some blue sky showing through. Even at central park temperatures at 46 matching with the winds still gusting above 30. So the feels like temperatures in the low 40s. Also the strong winds coming from the north over parts of sullivan, ulster and duchess county enough to really sort of cot the back deck. Anna marie, thank you for the photos this morning. We have a little picture via twitter. You see the streamers overnight come come from the north and west. We know those are letting up just a little bit, allowing for more mild air to come in wind gusts will still be strong through the middle day. Then they will ease in the afternoon. Doesnt mean we get the benefits of the warmer air. Thats not until tomorrow. So still looking for the wind chill. Feels like upper 30s and low 40s. As we get into tonight under clear skies chilly again. The best we can hope for is the upper 40s. Someplace are there. Newark 48, bridgeport 49, islip 48 degrees. Now, watching the satellite and radar purr on accutrack, other than the streamers that came off of the lake, what happens is the cold air goes across the warmer lake waters and that produces some light snow for parts of upstate. Some of that snuck into the nortrnhe counties. We turn the corner for tomorrow afternoon. So 58 for the second half of the weekend. Thats not bad at all. Right on target for this time of year. On the futurecast we are rain free. Even the skies look good tomorrow afternoon for very few clouds. Early part of the work week still under the influence of the same pattern that allows for very mild conditions. So the next several days we are above average for this time of year. The skies look good. There are no major weather features for us. About the middle of the week we will be dealing with the cold front that will bring storms across parts of oklahoma, texas panhandle area. We will be watching the storms come from there. Not until wednesday do we have an eye coming into our area. Tonight 40 degrees. Chilly overnight. Tomorrow nice recovery. The accuweather forecast shows us mild by monday. We have stopped this accutrack for us. Sunday afternoon you see the winds are back below 15 miles an hour and that allows for the mild air to really come in and settle into the area and the pattern benefit for us is right through wednesday. We are in the low 60s. Mild mix of area. Even though we see a surge of warmer air thursday ahead of a cold front, the temperatures for the end of the week. All in all, decent weekend. Tomorrow is probably the more comfortable day. 66 coming. I like it. Thank you.
