Which makes the checkout lane, victory lane. Well they brought us hits like saving private ryan and catch me if you can, now oscar winners tom hanks and Steven Spielberg team up again, and they take us on the thriller of a cold war mission in the new movie bridge of spies. Sandy kenyon has the review. Good morning. Events depicted in bridge of spies took place more than half war between the soviet union and the u. S. , but director Steven Spielberg has brought this story to life today. The film is called bridge of spies because thats where a couple of prisoners were exchanged at the height of the cold war. One was an american pilot shot down over the soviet union, the other a russian agent held by the u. S. The soviet spy they caught, we want you to defend him. Insurance lawyer James Donovan played by tom hanks is recruited for the tough task of trying to ensure the spy gets a fair trial. This will be a first for the both of us. You should be careful. Smart words as it turns out. You know how people like at us, the family of a man trying to free a traitor. The guy labeled the traitor could be just another stock bad guy, but he makes him a mysterious human being. This is the latest in a long line of decent men hanks has played, and it marks the fourth time hes been directed by Steven Spielberg. When tom was going full donovan, yes, i was intimidated. He was strong. The masters skill is obvious as the two strands of the story get equal weight. The lawyer thought up the idea for the swap and hes the Natural Choice to make it happen even in berlin. Some of the tension dissipates because bridge of spies is about a quarter of an hour too long but it seems a small complaint to make about a movie that is so exciting and entertaining. So confident was hanks as donovan his director and pal was at least a bit intimidated, at least thats what Steven Spielberg told me. His star was just so strong in that role everyone got a little scared at times. Bridge of spies is from disney owned by the same Parent Company as abc7. Im sandy kenyon Eyewitness News this weekend.
