You know, even after 6 years meltons murder was never considered a cold case. Investigators never gave up. They never stopped hunting down leads and today all of their hard work paid off. Jonelle meltons husband, michael, her mother and her two sisters were with Monmouth County officials when they announced three arrests in meltons murder. James fair made his first appearance on felony murder. His public defender entered a not guilty plea for him. Next was gregory jeanbaptiste facing the same charges. His attorney also entering not guilty for him. Ebenezer byrd stands before the judge tomorrow. The prosecutors said the three broke into meltons neptune city apartment thinking it was someone else, their intended target. Once they encountered her they brutally murdered her. They planned to burglarize a specific apartment but this was essentially a case of mistaken identity. We know this process is a long way from being over. Its a decision by the fda is igniting a little bit of a controversy. They approved genetically modified salmon. Its the first genetically altered animal you proved for human consumption in the u. S. What does that mean and how safe is it . Questions we want to get right to dr. Richard besser. Lets talk about this. How is it modified . So this is a very controversial subject. The fish has been modified in a couple of ways. A chanook. They inserted another gene from around. You put them into a salmon and you get a salmon that grows faster. It will be raised in panama and canada and sold in they modified the fish so theyre sterile. If the fish happened to get out it couldnt reproduce. Lot of steps here. I wasnt kid ding, a lot of people call this stuff frankin food. Is this really safe . I think i know that not everybody grows agree agrees with me on that. This is the first genetically modified animal being sold in the United States. The fda has taken years and years looking at their application. They looked to see nutritionally if it was the same and the answer was yes. The question is it safe and the answer is yes. For a lot of people they wont feel comfortable. We modify feeds all the time. We cross breed apples to get one that lasts longer and tastes better. We do that with animals to get one that provides more pounds of meat per hoof. These are different changes that are genetics but once you tinker by inserting a gene people are not comfortable. Theres the issue that the genes are to help the industry opposed to nutrition for families. I think that gives a lot of people like, oh, well, if its nutrition perhaps but considering its supposed to help the industry im not so sure im all that supportive. A different spin on terms of that question is if fish are produced that get to market sooner hopefully they will be cheaper. Weve been telling diet you want to have several portions a week. If youre able to produce it cheaper maybe it will be good. Will it be labeled . Will people know . I think it should be labeled. The problem is the fda is limited in terms of what they can do. Unless theres a risk they have no authority to require labeling. Today they issued guidance for voluntary labeling both for the fish and for other genetic modified crops. Those are open for public comment. I think there needs to be a law passed because consumers care. Even though i think from a health standpoint theres no difference, i think if you dont want to eat it you shouldnt have to.
