Born, a father from italy. A mother whose parents were from italy. Raised in argentina. And you can see right now, the excitement that these children have. Let me put it back to the studio right now with liz, because i know that you guys have been following this all day long. And hes got such a busy schedule ahead. David, we want do go ahead and keep this picture up and continue to talk to you as the pope really works the crowd there as he just arrived just moments ago at our lady queen of Angels School. And david, its remarkable, hes being greeted as though he is a rock star by the young kids, dill you get a chance, did you get a chance to talk to any of the children and how excited they are . I sure have liz. They are very excited and thats a great way to describe him. He is a rock star and theyve been watching tv many of them. They know how receptive he has been to selfies and taking pictures and for example, you see it right now in the crowd as they reach out with their cell phones and take the pictures. Its been so much anticipation to this visit for the schools and for the students themselves and such on honor for him to come here. Its hard for them to put it into words but you can see it on their faces, look how excited they get and so is the crowd around us as well. What could be a daunting circumstance getting out of that car and seeing this crowd waiting for him. The pope came right out and went right to the crowd. And we saw high fives and you see selfies everybody it seems has a cell phone ready to go and then the smiles on everyones face as the pope stops. A father centauri. Thank you for joining us again Cardinal Dolan said that it was very important the pope had said to him that when he comes to new york, he wanted to see an inner city catholic school. What kind of schools do you think that he is he is expecting to see here . Well, when he was in buenos aires, he doubled the number of schools during his tenure. Flush and he wants children who dont have an opportunity for a good education to get one. So i think thats what hes affirming here. That these look at the faces of the children. Theyre immigrant children. Probably mostly first generation. And so he wants the Catholic Community to focus resources on helping these children. Its been a message of inclusion since he first landed in washington, d. C. Hes included everybody and every step of the way and this is just another outreaching event including the kids and this this visit thats just you know taken catholics and noncatholics alike. You know, we have an emerging hispanic majority in the catholic church. Uhhuh. And yet, we dont have the vocations and we have to make changes to be able to meet the needs. And i think by doing this, hes really sending a signal to the different bishops and you have to focus on this. This has to be a priority. What is remarkable as we watch the pope really work his way down this massive crowd that is outside the school that he seems really just energized and taking so much energy from these young people that hes interacting with. And hes had a daunting day so far. Well. I was at the 9 11 memorial. And he looked tired. He could just about get his spanish talk out. And then you see him now, and its as if hes a different person. He was gracious. Looked tired at vespers last night and today its a memorial and then look at the smile on his face, no doubt. The smiles everywhere. Yeah, father thank you and were going to continue to talk to you through the afternoon and check in right now with marcus solis. He is just outside of the school. Slight little off of the enclosed area where you can see behind marcus, so many people waiting to see as that motorcade went by. Marcus . Reporter ling and physical those kids are happy on 112th street, theres disappointment here on third avenue. So many people here to catch a look at the motorcade but it turned off on 111th street and folks were chanting we want the pope as they wanted just a glimpse of that fiat as it went by. Got somebody here, you came from . Connecticut. Reporter and why did you decide to come down here and what were you hoping to see. The pope. Yeah. We just think hes an unbelievable man and just wanted to see how close we could get. Reporter where can i go next . Youre ready to follow him around. I have both my daughters with me and were ready to find him. Reporter folks are hoping they get a look the glimpse of the pope as he leaves the school possibly headed down third avenue but a lot of really just a great crowd here. They were so happy lined up for hours ahead of time. There was a great cheer when they knew the motorcade was coming and at one time they were saying the lords prayer. Singing songs. So a lot of anticipation just excitement and a lot of gratitude too, that pope francis has decided to come to east harlem to this neighborhood to spread his message and to see the people here and they are certainly waiting hoping to catch a glimpse of him. Him on third avenue. But on 112th. Between second and third right now, the kids seem to be hoping to get a selfie or a shake or a a blessing from the pope himself. And David Novarro is outside the our lady queen of Angels School right now. David, we can sense the excitement through the television screen. What is it like to be right there . Reporter you know, its fascinating. First i have to tell you what you see is a very small part of whats happening on the street. Its very loud. Its very exciting. But aside from that, theres a tremendous amount of security surrounding him unlike anything i have ever seen. For a pope in the past and i covered several. You know, im looking at police on top of the buildings. The people who live on this street were instructioned not to ohm their windows and many of them have done it anyway and many of them are taking pictures nonetheless because they want to be sure that everyone is safe. In the end and i said earlier, its all about the pope and the children. And of course the immigrants who want to make a story. If i could have you just maybe i have in my hand a symbol of this cross. That he has been given. A lot of gifts. This is a symbol of unity and coming together. And so pope francis meeting an immigrants and refugees, just one of the gifts hes going to be getting inside the church. But just not this. Every one of them a symbol of something else. Back to the picture of the pope right now. Inside the pope well four tables and looking at is t soccer the soccer ball and tools from the students who play soccer and tools and a tool belt and a book from the dreamers recounting immigrants stories and the duplicate set of linens to be used at the Madison Square garden mass and handmade by immigrant women. So much heart. So much passion going into this trip. The terms of the excitement right now, a lot of it is going inside the building. As you can see, hes just still lingering outside. But people are starting to make their way into the class where he will be greeted by song. Songing a sing for the pope and a prayer for st. Francis and also be meeting with the students representing four schools. Selected by the principal by a lottery. Could you imagine how excited the kids are . I spoke to one and he couldnt put it in words. Like i got chosen. I got chosen and you hear this again and again and because so many are la tee knee. El papa, el papa. So much love and celebration here in east harlem just wonderful to see it and to share it with you. Truly been just a gleeful time for so many people here in new york. Pope. As the pope walks into the school there, were going to keep that picture up because we want to show you another remarkable picture that is happening in new york city. And that is also central park. Im not sure do we have there we go and theres Diana Williams where thousands of people, tens of thousands of people, are right now trying to make their way into central park. Procession after he leaves the school. Diana. Reporter yeah, and liz, i think all of new york is here right now. It is the biggest number of people that i think ive ever seen in my life here in central park. And you can hear people applauding right now. Its not because the pope is coming by. They actually tend to applaud if any of the fdny or Police Officers walk by or if anything hams out here happens out here. But angela pan around and show what a huge crowd there is here. Marcus said people there were you know eight to ten feet people deep. But the beautiful thing about the park is its not flat. People can get up an a hill and on a hill and see across the way here to kind of get a look at the pope. Somehow we managed to get a front row seat here. We are right at the gate and ive been hanging with vinny all day. Hello new york. Reporter well talk to vinny later probably. Because he has been here all afternoon he didnt get a stitch of sleep last night because he was so excited and also working. But excited to be here and excited to bring his daughter here. Youve had a lot of other people here too and weve seen flags from owl over the country all over the country you know when they talk about new york being a beautiful mosaic, thats whats out here right now. We have folks from mexico and colombia all here with us and just having a great time. Everybody is happy. Everybodys excited to see the pope and weve kind of been having a cheering section on this side right everybody . Have we had a cheerings section . Yes and then been kind of going up with the cheering section hi guys. Yeah. So we are all ready for when the pope comes by. A while from now. After 4 00 and hes not due here until 5 00, 5 15. Were here and ready. Check back with us again. Liz and rob back to you. Thank you very much. We do want to listen in right now because you can see the pope was speaking, he is greeting folks and the children are singing. [ chanting ] we heard the children singing prayer of st. Francis and then the hail mary. The pope right there, the anticipation has been building now for well over a year. I know my own parish, we were getting ready for this and my kids were getting ready for this. They were excited and theyre not three feet way from opinion away pope francis like these kids are. Kids from st. Anns and st. Charles and st. Paul and our lady queen of angels. Mostly third graders and older kids mixed in there as well. The principal joanne walsh is introducing the pope to the classroom right now. The pope is going to meet with students representing four schools and then two of the students will give the pope a gift. A spiritual bouquet. A bouquet of prayers that have been written by the children there as we continues the meet many of the School Children there. Father, we have heard the pope today. He spoke obviously at ground zero earlier today. Very emotional speech as well as oh you know what . Lets go ahead and listen in right now. And this okay . This is a model of our new entrance [ inaudible ] this is the water for the vegetables and the flowers and this is the [ inaudible ] this is the compost pile for [ speaking spanish ] [ speaking spanish ] [ speaking spanish ] those are all third and fourth graders and hard to hear some of them but you could hear that some of them were speaking spanish to the pope. And father, as we watch this, it is remarkable, he is just captivated by children and they are captivated by him. Uhhuh. They are giving him gifts but hes really getting the gift back. Yeah, i think that he loves children. And he sees them as a sign of the future. So when hes with them, he wants them to understand that. And this mixes with the message that he brought, with the environment and the thought of inclusion and including everyone. But also immigrants. Yeah. I think when he was in front of congress, and when he was with president obama, he stressed that. We were built on immigrants and i think he was even identifying that hes now technically here as an immigrant. And i think it was important to say that. That the National Discussion needs to focus on the humanity of the immigrants and i think thats what he wants to emphasize as well. He also seems very savvy in using what you would i guess you could call his celebrity . To maybe bring cameras and capture images to show to the world that may not necessarily be shown. Yeah. You know, when he left the vatican, he just housed a syrian refugee family in the vatican and second one is coming. Hes saying to the churches in europe you can do this. Anytime hee does Something Like this, hes saying you can do it. So the local churches and local parishes when i was a kid growing up, the pope was at the vatican. We we talked about him. We prayed for him. We never had this opportunity to see him this close. But to see him walk into a parish classroom, thats something altogether different. So it makes him more human and more it seems more accessible. Right. We see hes the first real pastoral pope weve had. No other pope in recent time has as much experience working with people and ministering to people and it shows in everything hes done on this trip. How hes met hell meet with prisoners in philadelphia and the homeless in dc. Here the laborers and the migrants, what hes saying is these are the people who really we should be ministering to. And so thats i think the reason he he does this. Flush. Lets go ahead and see if we can listen in a little bit more. [ inaudible ] holy father, thanking god for gift of you. Our project shows some of things that we are thankful for on the edge. Holy father, we made this project to share with you. Their project. That was precious. Just a wonderful moment right there. Fantastic. Thats right. When the little girl looks at the pope, would oatlike give it a tie like to give it a try . From working our observe smart board own smart board if the board over there. I feel for you pope. I we know its no easy task but what remarkable moment for all these children to be able to work on these projects and then present them to the pope. Yeah. Again, he is right there. He is theyre talking to him like a best friend. Thats fantastic. Lets go back outside and David Novarro standing outside our our lady queen of Angels School david . Reporter you know, im watching this along with the both of you in the studio and you know whats happening here and you picked upmost of it. The students of the four schools that were chosen they all head Service Projects to had Service Projects to present to the pope. The last one being one on the environment and of course thats one Important Message the pope has been sending and he said of course to the u. N. And he said to of course our leaders here. I think just the charming moment where he has to use the now the kids. They got it. Stuff. But thats pretty much theyve been anxiously waiting for weeks with these Service Projects to be able to have that moment come and look at this moment right now. Having that oneonone moment. You know, so many of the 70 latino. This is an Important Message because the Latino Community very much the future of the catholic church. East harlem also one of the highest concentrations of Public Housing developments in the city. Which makes it one of the highest in the country. About 45 receive public assistance here. Its a school. Its a district that really has to deal with tremendous challenges. Exactly the people pope francis is reaching out to and wants us to open our hearts and our arms to. But again. I must keep going back to the latino pride. Theres so much of it here, you that probably had tee toe puente and marc antony and also the home of the el barrio. I cant begin to tell you what it means to have a latino pope coming here and putting east harlem on the world map. Liz and rob, very, very special. As he thanks the teachers and administrators at this school. And getting ready for the next part of the event, which is where he will meet immigrants who have been helped by Catholic Charities, the charity arm of the catholic church. Its been very important him right father to talk about the to him right father . Thats one of the things the vatican in march provided 200 to go to the sistine chapel. And he sat with them and it was for not just ten minutes, it was for like two hours and he wanted them to get a tour, to have a good meal. He made showers available for people. I was in rome in march for the first time and i couldnt believe the Homeless Population in rome. So hes very sensitive to that. Trying to reach out in that way. We can see that the pope right now i believe thats Kirsten Gillibrand and we saw the governor there along with senator schumer. His son. Mayor de blasios son danita back there as well. Cant quite hear what they are saying but you can see senator jill brands receiving a gillibrand receiving a blessing there from the pope. David brought up a very interesting and important point. Our lady queen of angels has been serving east harlem for going on 120 years now. It is such a a part of the east harlem community. And its important for this pope to be here at this time with this community. You can see he just met Melissa Markviverito and right walk walking through one of the hallways and hes expected to also work his way down a corridor of the school to a gymnasium for where the main program will be and hell be meeting some immigrants. All right, in the hallway, supposedly there are some honors students that the pope is going to make his way by and they do expect him to just stop and [ applause ] and say hello to them as well. Outside the school, 250 students and thousands of onlookers including david and marcus there. But theres a lot of people out there right now in east harlem excited about this entire day. Father, we had talked a lot about the changing face of the catholic church. And those parishioners. And how theres been a shift from the east coast to more southwest and west coast. How much of a concern is it for the vatican, for the pope to come here, you know, the Church Officials here in new york recently closed and merged dozens of parishes. Weve seen so many Catholic Schools close recently. How much of a concern is that for the vatican . Well, its a real concern. Whereas we have a surplus of churches, down south they cant build them fast enough. So i think hes trying to stress that we have to kind of reorient as well. Because of the fact that theres more challenges. Thats why in manhattan, in this area, we have so many more immigrants coming. Are we meeter their needs . Hes going to places to stress that topic and a concern for the church. Father, thank you, well get back to that in just a minute. While we wait for the pope to reemerge at our lady queen of Angels School, we want to get to his next stop in central park. Aj ross standing by. Aj . Reporter 45, 50 minutes and then dozens of disappointed ticketholders coming around this perimeter here at 63rd and cant get in at this point. To central park. I was fortunate enough to get a ticket lastminute because someone who handed this to me and as you can see very clearly it states you have to be through security by 3 30. That was the cutoff and i got to say, in fairness officers here and people who are riding right at 3 0. They did reopen the gates briefly and since then, it has been shut down. Now as i mentioned i did manage to get past this photographer this is really just the first hurdle. As get past this theres a very long winding line that someone was telling me it takes several hours just to get close to the point to get through security to see the pope. Around 80,000 people were issued these tickets and im hearing a lot of complaints as far as how long theyve had to wait and how much confusion there is in getting through security and still a lot of worry as to whether or not people are even going goat to see the pope gosh debt to see the get to see the pope or not. [ inaudible ] so we get more information on just what will happen with those people who had tickets and were disappointed and didnt get in. For now live in midtown, aj ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. Oak, we apologize for the aid yesterday problems there with ajs microphone but if you had ha hard time hearing, there was just a huge amount of people trying to get into central park. And the nypd on the tickets that were given out during that citywide lottery, that people, they were hoping to get the 100,000 people in the park by 3 30 this afternoon. Unfortunately, the crowds have been so massive they have not been able to get everything everyone through security. And so it sounded like aj said they started to turn people away. Again, the popes procession is supposed to start sometime shortly after 5 00. And because of the extreme security measures, you needed a ticket to get inside to see the pope during his procession. They needed to go through the magnetometers and they wanted people through around 3 30 this afternoon. That appears has not happened. We have an eye in central park. Diana williams is standing by and among the crowd. Diana, whats it look like from your Vantage Point . Reporter its very, very crowded. We are at the tail end of whats going to be the papal parade thats going to wind its way through central park. Were at about west drive at about 60, 61st street here and all the folks here are ticketholders. Many of them spent about two, three hours in line before they actually got into these enclosed areas and everybody can kind of penned off. Much like they do in times square. For new years eve. So you have huge crowds of people and these giant pens. And everybody being very cooperative. Very nice. But weve also been watching and seeing people across the way still coming in. So we dont know if the her still allowing people do people into the park or not. But again 80,000 ticketholders and they were selected by a lottery although we talked to one two women here who actually got their tickets they were very fortunate this morning they called it a miracle but they got off the train and hoping to just come and see the pope and off the train they got and somebody handed them two tickets to be able to come in here and look theyre right here with me. They have a front row seat. Theyre very excited and very happy to be here, this is really the feeling is just everybody is excited and everybody is happy. We have seen emts out because obviously people have been standing for a long time. Waiting for a long time. So weve had some people pass out. No serious injuries that we can tell but emts are out here. And of course as you look around, you can see the police are here as well. And the bomb sniffing dogs and explosive sniffing dogs having out as well. We are here. We are waiting for the pope. And its now less than an hour from now that he will be winding his way down west drive here. And again, folks, very, very excited to see him. Excited imdeed and also excited at the school where he is right now. The pope receiving some gifts, he just received a soccer ball. From the lesson in soccer i believe. And a very good lesson in soccer and soccer is one of his most behooved sports, san lorenzo is his team. Glue up watching them in argentina and where hes from and right now hes meeting some of the immigrants who have been invited. Hes now moved into the gymnasium at our lady queen of Angels School. He will meet here with families who have been helped by and affected positively by Catholic Charities. Lets go ahead and listen in. [ speaking spanish ] what youre looking at right now [ speaking spanish ] thank you very much, im going give you a to give you a hug. This hug is on behalf of everybody here. The day workers. The pope was presented a gift of a soccer ball. We saw that but he also was given tools and a tool belt. To signify the hard work of the immigrant community here in new york city. And beyond. And you can tell the pope is hes affecting them and he is affected as well. Uhhuh. Father, you know we heard the pope talk earlier today at ground zero and obviously he spoke very important speech at the u. N. Our expression and the dreams are for a better life in the united states. We hope to rid ourselves and our families and to build the common good for our neighbors. Please accept this gift of our stories and dreams. More than a thousand people have welcome you to new york and in recognition of your voice on behalf of the poor. Please, accept this gift as our gift. Hi [ laughter ] [ speaking spanish ] its from all the indigenous from honduras. This is my daughter, shes 4 years old. Whats her name . Fernando. Can i give fernanda. Can you give you a kiss . Father, so we heard hello pope francis. Were a group of mothers that and support each other. And this is our present. It is a table cloth. Its a replica of the table cloths that are going to be used today at mass. So its a table cloth for the mass. Welcome. [ speaking spanish ]. I would like for you to bless this bracelet a mother gave it to me for her disabled daughter. Thank you. And bless the mothers as well. Thank you. Father, so what do you expect to hear from the pope . What is he going to say to these people today . I think hes going to say that its important for us to continue to have opportunities for immigrants to work, to live, to study. And for the church to be the catalyst for a lot of that. Through its schools, through Catholic Charities, through social services and even the parishes. Once again holy father, you have met people from new york and people coming from all all over the united states. Catholic charities has a privilege and the responsibility to receive our brothers and sisters the oppressed, the poor, and also those who have aspirations. We do it with dignity and passion in the name of jesus christ. Our service is a blessing from god and it gives us life. This cross that we present to you is a symbol of the confirmational work that Catholic Charities does together with the saving force of the cross of jesus christ. Please accept us with in our appreciation from all of us here. [ applause ] come. You who are blessed by my father. Take your inheritance. The kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. Me to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me to drink. For i was a stranger, and you welcomed me. For i needed clothes, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you cared for me. Came to visit me. Dear brothers and sisters, good afternoon. Im very happy to be with you today. Along with this big family, which surrounds you. I see your teachers, your parents, and your family members. Thank you for letting me come. And i and especially your teachers to forgive me for stealing a few minutes of their class time. Everybody is happy. I know. [ laughter ] they tell me that one of the nice things about this school and about the work that is being done here is that some of come from other places. And many from other countries. And that is nice. Even though i know that it is it is not always easy to have to move and find a new home, new neighbors, and new friends. It is not easy but one has to begin. At the beginning, it can be hard and tiring right . Often times, you have to learn a new language. Adjust to a new culture. Even a new climate. Theres so much to learn. And not just the work at school. But also many other things. Like for example, you were playing with your ball very well. Make new friends. And this is very important. The good friends that we find, with these people who open doors for us. Who show their kindness to us, their friendship to us, their understanding and theyve tried to help us so that we do not feel like strangers. Like foreigners. It is work that is being done by people who help us feel at home. Although sometimes our imagination takes us back to our homeland. But we find good people that how nice it is to feel that school, that meeting places, are a second home. This is not only important for you, but also for your families. So school ends up being one big family for all. One where together with our mothers and fathers and grandparents, teachers and friends, we learn to help one another. To share our good qualities. To give the best of ourselves. To work as a team. To play as a team. Thats very important as well. And to pursue our goals. Here, theres a very important street named after a person who did a lot for other people. I would like to recall this person with you. Im talking about reverend mar ting luther king. One Martin Luther king. One day he said i have a dream. He dreamt that many children, many people, could have equal opportunities to, his dream opportunities, his dream was that many people like you could have access to education. He dreamt that many men and women like you could keep their head high with the dignity of those who concern their keep. It is beautiful to have dreams. It is beautiful also to be able to fight for those dreams. Dont forget about that. Today, we want to keep dreaming. We celebrate all the opportunities which enable you and us, adults, not to lose the hope of a better world with greater possibilities. So many here that have greeted and that have been introduced to, they also dream with you. They dream about this. And that is why they become involved in this kind of work. They get involved in your lives. We all dream. I always know that one of the dreams of your parents and teachers and of all those that help you and also Cardinal Dolans as well. Hes a very good man. The dream is you can grow up and live with happiness. Here, i see you smiling. Keep smiling. And help bring the joy to everyone you meet. It is not always easy. There are problems in all households. There are difficult situations. There is sickness. But keep dreaming. Everyone here, children and adults, you will have the right to dream and im very happy that you, whether at school or here, you can find in your teachers and in friends and everyone that comes near you, to provide assistance, you can find that with saying the support you need to do it. Wherever there are dreams, wherever there is joy, jesus is always present. Always. Now, whose foe is sadness . Whose foe is trust . And envy and evil desires . Whats the name of that . The devil. The devil sews sadness. Because he does not want to see us happy. They dont want us to dream. Where there is joy, jesus is always present. Because jesus is joy. And he wants to help us to feel that joy every day. Of our lives. Before going, i would like to give you some homework. [ laughter ] [ applause ] can i do that . It is a simple question but very important. Please dont forget to pray for me. So i can share with many people the joy of jesus. Let us also pray so that many people can share the joy like yours, like when you feel accompanied, assisted, when you feel that youre getting in fites, although fights, although there are problems there may be problems, but you have peace in your hearts because jesus will never abandon you. May god bless you and every one of you and our lady protect you. Thank you. [ applause ] now can you sing me something . Do you know how to sing . Yes we do. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Altogether, one song and then we are all going to pray to the lord. Were going to say our lords prayer. [ applause ] now, were going to pray. Altogether were going to pray the lords prayer. Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thr kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. God almighty, father, son, holy spirit. Pray for me. Dont forget the homework. [ laughter ] [ applause ] you have been long to pope francis while he has listening to pope francis while of Angels School talking to immigrants there. Along with students and father who joins us here on set, may i with all due respect, just a charming, wonderfully charming speech as he spoke to those people there. And has a real is able to create a real connection to the people who hes talking to in such a simple but profound way of doing it. I mean you talk about getting to the real core of emotion and talking about what the people have been through. Just through moving and starting a new home and making new friends and saying i understand. I understand your story. And it was very powerful i thought. Well, even using the idea of dream in the bible, dreams are ways that people get revelations from god. So theres a divine inspiration in dreams and i think hes tapping that to let them think about god being with them. If they dream. So i think he took a very biblical idea and made it very understandable to that audience there. Very understandable to catholics and noncatholics but even take away what he was saying to the chirp of grow up and children of grow up and live with happiness. Live with joy. Uhhuh. It is beautiful to have dreams and beautiful to fight for those dreams. Dont forget that. Thats what he said and going back to what my mother always said, you asked kids to pray. Because god hears those prayers first. And so great that he said i have little homework for you. [ laughter ] it was great sense of humor. With a great sense of humor. You can see all the kids kind of stop for a moment and just a simple request of just pray for me. David novarro, he is outside of the school you can see the pope is now leaving the room. Hes making his way back outside of the school where he will once again be greeted by some students there waiting. David . Reporter hey liz, i just want to talk a little bit more about what you guested and that was the charm that was just coming through. A lot of that has to do with pope francis being able to speak in his native language. And when hes able to do that, he can go off the planned script and especially in front of children you get to see why so many people are just so in love with him and just so excited about his appearance. As you just said let me turn around here. We are getting ready for his departure right now. Tremendous amount of security in place. I hazard to guess maybe as much security outside this school as there are people inside this school. And for good reason as you see right now he continues to say his goodbyes and youre looking there. The man with the beard. Hes monsignor Kevin Sullivan and of course pope francis was very important for him to talk about immigrants, this is a story he knows very well. Its being won i mean his family come from italy and grew up in argentina. And it is historic address to congress on thursday. Francis asked the lawmakers embrace millions of undocumented immigrants. This was the message he wanted to get out here among others you see Cardinal Dolan there leading the way as they are about to leave the school. Outside. Many, many people. Over 250, close to 300 if you add some of the friends of the families that are here waiting to say goodbye. Also, from the windows you can see residents who were not part of the invited list but live here in the community. People who were actually told dont look out the window. Keep your window closed. For security risk. Well, let me tell you think the they have the windows open and they have the cameras ready to take the pictures, they are very excited and all of them anxious to get a glimpse of pope francis as he makes his way out. Beginning to hear a roar of the crowd. Cant see frit the pictures live from inside but outside you can see that theres a lot of anticipation. As he begins his way out here. Next stop, of course is going to be central park. Going to be like. This area here is very controlled. Its only the invited guests difficult to get on to this block. Unless you lived here. Beyond that, thats why it is not possibly the kind of wild excitement you might see in some of the other public areas. Here right now, a very Excited Group nonetheless. Just the opportunity to be those privileged to be invited. Those lucky enough to see the leader of a church that represents about 1. 2 billion catholics around the world. And now, that space is here in east harlem. Among those, those their stories being told from a pope with so much in common with them. I cant begin to tell you how important it is for some of these people in a community with more challenges than many other communities in this city that overcome these challenges and are able to live their life and the dreams and their promises that pope francis wants them to live. And hopes for them and prays for them. Hes coming out and this is something that happens everywhere he goes. Im going to wrap up the live report here in east harlem and i can tell you the latest right back to you in the studio. All right. David thank you. You can see the pope and the photographers emerging from the school and were expecting the pope to emerge from the school from there, hes going to greet some of the children we understand. And then he will be getting back in that now famous fiat. And he will make his way south. And over were not quite sure the route yet but then of course he will be heading towards central park. Where at a certain point, on your 72nd street he will change from the fiat and make his way into central park. We should tell you there was some concern before that perhaps not everyone was going to get into the park that perhaps it had been closed down. The secret service has said that they are still processing people. It is still time to get into the park. They are bringing in more tsa agents to try to get people through faster. But they did not shut down the park. [ please stand by for captioner transition ] when he came up here to east harlem, he spoke specifically about Martin Luther king drive
