We are going to close it up. I got some of my men coming down to close the building up. Structurally the building wasnt too bad. We are going to have an engineer check that out but at this point doesnt look like theres any structural damage. The frames for the glass and wall have to be replaced. Reporter the only good news is no one was seriously injured in this wild chase scene out here on route 22. That is the latest live from union. Anthony johnson, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thank you, anthony. Now to other story, four people injured including two critically after a hangar partially collapsed at newark airport. This happened as a construction crew worked on the hangar at brewster road. Toni yates is at the scene this afternoon with all the breaking details. Toni. Reporter yes, we will start with the good news first, all nine of the workers that were in hangar 14 that you see there behind me being demolished, all of them were quickly accounted for, four as you said were injured, they were taken to University Hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. Now to what happened. Its the old United Airlines hangar number 14. Newscopter 7 was overhead. She was being prepped by crews for demolition that was scheduled for tomorrow. Now, obviously something went very wrong and part of that building buckled while the workers were inside. Port Authority Police came, the Fire Department responded. They all stayed for at least an hour and then they left, which is usually a sign that there is no more imminent danger. United was scrapping this hangar since it opened a brand new 190,000 square foot Maintenance Hangar that he opened last year. Hangar 14 in its history hosted numerous dignitaries over the course of her life which many decades. President nixon was back there in 1971. Back here live, crews were here until about 3 40 this afternoon. No one spoke on camera, no one spoke to the media about what may be happening tomorrow so we dont know if the demolition will go on as it was scheduled for tomorrow after this accident. For now we are live here at newark airport, toni yates, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling a large warehouse fire in franklin township. The flames broke up inside the warehouse on metlers road. We are told that one firefighter suffered an ankle injury, another was brought to the hospital for heat exhaustion. And speaking of the heat, that was the top subject for some students as they went back to school today. Some districts in connecticut and new jersey ended up sending Children Home early but new York City Schools decided to make a go of it despite the heat and held a full day of classes for its students first day. Meteorologist amy freeze live in the Upper West Side with students who are dealing with the warm temperatures. Reporter yesterdays big record breaker, kids today were facing new classes, new teachers, new friends and in some cases classrooms without airconditioning. Now, while it was uncomfortable, looks like they made out the first day. Its ridiculous. Right now im drenched in sweat. It was very, very hot today, yes, yes, it was hot in the school. Reporter hot or not, students were ready to be back in the classroom even with temperatures near 90 and their parents were ready too. My kid was extremely excited. She was very excited to go back. Reporter and mom too . I was excited for her to go back too. Reporter at jfk high school in the bronx, temperatures soared to the mid80s before noon. You cant really focus when the heat too much heat, cant focus at all. Reporter but new York City School chancellor had little sympathy for the backtoschool sticky situation. One of the advantages of someone who has been in this system 50 years, i remember when there was no air conditioning whatsoever, so like i say to my children and i gave my grandchildren the other day the story of all the things they have that i never had and i managed to survive. Reporter the department of Education Reports 95 of Educational Department buildings have airconditioning in some or all of the instructional space. That means that a Resource Room or even a teachers lounge could quantify a school for having some airconditioning. Many schools with air conditioning units cannot get full use of them. Schools built before 1920 are unable to safely power multiple airconditioning units at the same time. Per regulation, teachers and parents are forbidden from bringing airconditioning or fans to school. I was surprised that we started school at all. I wanted the summer to keep going. Its really bizarre. You deal with it. Thats you just deal with it, you know. Reporter september . It wont be hot for long. Reporter that is true. Changes are upon us, for sure. Chancellor for rina farina said she cant remember air conditioning as long as she went back to school. It was interesting, a lot of new york parents say they cant remember starting temperatures this hot. It is unusual, the average high for this date is 78 degrees but last year the first three days of school were 87 degrees or hotter so a break is coming for tomorrow. Thats the good news. Live on the Upper West Side tonight, meteorologist amy freeze, channel 7 Eyewitness News. A high school in the bronx is making a comeback after a crippling blast at john f. Following breaking news out of manhattans Upper East Side where we are told three people have been injured because of an outofcontrol car there crashing into a construction site. Eyewitness News Reporter josh einiger just arrived on the scene and, josh, what can you tell us . Reporter still pretty active scene here, dave, around lex between 88th and 87th, this car was coming down lexington avenue, side swiped a parked car and then wound up right here slamming into the back of a con ed work site. This was a work crew doing work on underground gas this car they say came out of nowhere, they actually watched it coming and they had to dive out of the way. One of the workers actually wound up pushed by the car under the back of this work truck which actually might have saved that workers life. At least two of the workers already taken to Cornell Medical Center a few blocks away, along with the driver of the car. We can show you video as that driver of the car and two of the workers were taken to the hospital. Police have been here on scene for much of the past hour trying to piece all of this together. The workers tell us that the driver was seemed to be foaming at the mouth, seemed to be having some sort of a medical condition when he lost control and slammed right into their workplace. None of the three hospitalized so far said to be suffering from injuries that are all of that all that serious and the driver was actually alert and conscious and talking on his cell phone when they wheeled him away and into an ambulance. Back to a live look now on lex, a flatbed coming now to tow this car out of here. There is a traffic concern, of course, on lexington at this time of day regardless and, of course, this isnt helping matters but hopefully this should all be cleaned up within the next half hour so. Passengers scrambled to escape using emergency slides to get off the burning plane on the tarmac. This happened in las vegas. 170 people were on board flight 2276 which was headed to Londons Gatwick airport. 14 passengers were taken to a hospital. Experts say a mechanical failure could have caused the engine on the 777 to explode. Federal investigators now looking into exactly what happened. Well, starting tomorrow, another town in new jersey will be added to the communities calling for outdoor water restrictions. Officials in mahwah are telling residents to conserve water, lack of rain, excessive demand for water and high temperatures causing a shortage at united water. The restrictions go into place from midnight tonight to 6 00 a. M. Heres what you need to know. If you have an even address, this affects you on mondays, wednesdays and fridays and if you have an odd address, youre prohibited from using water on tuesdays, thursdays and saturdays. Water is what we need in many parts of the area and we are getting in the form of a flood advisory now, right . The thing is this is isolated. Its almost Staten Islands private storm right now moving over to brooklyn. So think of it tonight, there are these spotty, heavy downpours and then tomorrow some relief. Not going to help everything because weve had a very dry pattern but a couple of spots that pick up a couple inches of rain. We have seen an inch of rain, dramatic shot. Youve got this bright sun shining sort of shining halo over Lower Manhattan to the left, youre looking at the basically the Northern Edge of the thunderstorm, over new york harbor, over Staten Island and crossing over the verrazano into brooklyn right now and just a couple of rain drops are reaching midtown and we are on the Upper West Side here, nothing happening here, dry. It depends on where you are right now but if youre under this storm, its tiny. 85 degrees right now, a south wind at six, managed to sneak in the 90degree temperature so that makes it the third heatwave of the season. Today was day three. 19th 90degree day, the average is 17. This is another amazing stat. 62 straight 80degree days. Thats just remarkable. We may actually break that streak tomorrow. That is the record. Storms stay spotty tonight, more widespread downpours tomorrow, flooding is possible on city streets and your neighborhoods, highways, poor drainage we are concerned about, the heavy, slow moving downpours. 91 in wrightstown so we have had showers trying to cool off the numbers, 81 in newark, still 90 in andover, 83 in islip and the dew points are around 70 degrees. Its very sticky and uncomfortable, so the atmosphere is now full of water and we are going to ring it out with a cold front coming through and you see the drier air with the lower dew points to our west. That comes in by friday, not by tomorrow. So basically from now all the way through tomorrow i have to include a shower or thunder threat in the forecast but really through the overnight and into the Morning Hours tomorrow through the these are all really spotty chances so its scattered storms, not storming all the time but you get caught under one of these and you can see some flooding in the area. But i think they are more widespread later tomorrow into tomorrow evening. So notice just over the past couple of hours, this all just blossomed really over parts of Middlesex County and over parts of union county and now just exploded over the verrazano, lots of lightning there and now its going to be brooklyns storm here as things get quieter in places like south beach, Staten Island, its headed over to bushwick and over gerritsen and eventually into parts of queens. Otherwise thats pretty much the only game in town. Then you have this cold front and all this moisture here and thats why we are saying more widespread storms during the day tomorrow and then the drier air will come in tomorrow night into friday. Temperatures behind the front, you go from 90s to 70s and 60s. So showers and storms tomorrow, about 78, and heavier later in the day and in the evening hours. Partly cloudy, warm, stoic, a sticky, a shower or storm around 73. Tomorrow 78 so we break that 80 degree stretch. Noticeably cooler but still muggy, showers and some heavy downpours with thunderstorms. Periods of rain tomorrow night are really early on and then it tapers off. Coming up at 4 30, the pattern remains a little unsettled into the weekend but the weekend isnt a washout. More on that in the sevenday accuweather forecast and we will track that storm. Its not a Severe Thunderstorm Warning with that storm. The real concern is just flooding downpours, quick flash floods so be careful of that over Staten Island. Richard besser here and he will tell you the truth. We are talking back to school, tell me the truth. So lets get to the first question. Yes. Hello. Hi. Wes posted why do schools follow the American Academy of pediatrics, their guidelines for vaccines but not their recommendation for school hours . My daughters bus arrives at 6 30 in the morning. That is very, very frustrating. Its a great question. Its good news, bad news, its good they are following the recommendation in terms of vaccines, its bad they are not following the one in terms of school starting. Middle schools and high schools are not supposed to start any earlier than 8 30. These kids getting 8 1 2 to nine hours of sleep, no way to get it if it starts that early. I think the only way to change it is if parents go to School Boards and make a ruckus. The school says with after School Activities and things theres no way they can start that late. 17 of schools across the country that start at the recommended time and its a real problem. The kids are sleep deprived. Natural segue to this next question. I thought it was. This is a problem a lot of parent can deal with because the kids have been sleeping, staying up later, later this summer. The question is this, how can i get my high schooler to go to sleep early, set a pattern . This is going challenging. First is in high school theres always this work that kids have to do, lots of homework that is going to keep them up and about if they have afterSchool Activities but also biologically theres an issue here. Their bodies are not getting the boost of melatonin which makes them sleepy until later at night. Young kids and adults, we get it earlier and so we are ready to go to sleep. And so thats a challenge. But there are some things you can do. You want to make sure theres no caffeine in the Late Afternoon or evening, dark in the bedroom, you may need new shades in there and that can help. No electronics. Even the electronics off of a smartphone or a laptop will keep them up later or delay the rise in that melatonin which makes them sleepy. No meals in the bed, no homework in the bed. Its just for sleep and then if they can stay on a schedule that can help them give their body getting used to that routine of going to bed a little bit early. Thats good advice for me. Its the same rules for everybody. This next question i wrestled with this morning with hummus for my daughter. This person is asking if i pack a cheese stick in my kids lunch is it safe to eat by lunchtime . The rules on cheese sticks, the fda says that for hard cheeses you get four hours, for soft cheeses you get two hours. The Companies Say the same thing and thats good. But four hours is a long time and i worry less about that cheese stick than the tuna fish sandwich thats in there next to that cheese stick. What i would recommend is put an ice pack. You can get these plastic ice packs, put that in the lunch box and you will be fine for four hours with either one. Can you guarantee that the ice pack is going to make it home . It never does. Thats the problem. We went through a lot of those when our kids were little. They stayed at school, yes. Thanks a lot. Wish we had more time. Wraps it up. Next week i think weve got a lot of questions from parents about health issues. Yes. Looking forward to it. Thank you so much. And do you have a health or medical question that you may not want to ask your doctor . You can post it or send it via video or abc7ny. Com, twitter or facebook. We can try to answer your questions during a future segment. Coming up its called the survivor tree, discovered in the middle of the World Trade Center wreckage. Nearly 14 years later how it is breeding new life to other communities recovering from tragic events. We all watched it last night, Serena Williams beat her sister at the u. S. Oh, thank you introducing the oneandonly Volkswagen Golf sportwagen. The sportier utility vehicle. Well, there are Sand Sculptures you make with a bucket at the beach and then this. Chloe crawford, a fifth Grade Student at cashiers North Carolina spent most of the summer at that stand. The little cups added up. Chloe and company were able to donate more than 44,000 to their school and then a grandmother of a student matched that total and that inspired two others to donate huge sums bringing the total to 110,000. Are you kidding me . Thats amazing. That must be pretty good lemonade. Yes. It got bright and sunny outside of our window but we know the system is still moving through. What happens is these showers, they look pretty benign early on, they hit with is hit whats called a sea breeze front. And as that convergence happens and the air rises, all of a sudden air rises, all of a sudden it took a minor storm and made it major over Staten Island and brooklyn. Thats what we are seeing this afternoon and it is isolated. Again that picture with that black back drop of the new york skyline, thats what it looks like so you have sunshine over secaucus and then a heavy thunderstorm over parts of brooklyn and queens and in the south shore of Nassau County. Its also reaching over into parts of monmouth county. Weve had flood reports out of keenesburg right now so again, very, very localized. Go back to the other and take a look at an 85 temperature in new york city. Theres the heavy storm moving away from Staten Island, theres more sunshine coming back, 85, partly cloudy and by the way, this storm isnt going to bring any relief. It actually just makes it more of a steam bath because our humidity stays up. Thats what the storm looks like right now. Youve got one over raritan bay there, south shore of long island, another couple of thunderstorms working through ocean county and not too far from toms river and into jackson as well. But this is the main storm right now headed toward the rockaways, canarsie, so get ready for this valley stream, hewlett, long beach, jamaica and jfk promising delays. A lot of lightning near the rockaways right now, hopefully people got off the beach there. Theres a lot of lightning here, 24 lightning strikes just in the last 15 minutes and this looks like a storm that will hold together and this is a picture scan and it should be heading across Nassau County and into western suffolk over the next hour and these slow moving downpours stay over southern monmouth and ocean over the next hour, so these have a history of dropping about an inch, inch and a half over, lets say, an hour, hour and 15 minutes so it can cause flooding. And basically on the planner you have to plan for scattered popup storms at any time tonight through the day tomorrow. A lot of the times not doing anything but there are some scattered showers and heavy downpours. But as we get to the second half of the day tomorrow, thats when the storms really blossom, becomes more widespread and we all have heavy downpours. Evening commute tomorrow looks nasty. If you notice on the futurecast here, see its honing in on some of these scattered storms, maybe a few more to the north tonight. Still scattered but a few may actually impact your morning commute. Its rather muggy and gray tomorrow morning, then the radar really lights up after lunchtime tomorrow and these are heavy showers and downpours causing some localized flooding. They will be with us into the early evening hours, then leave, clouds should give way to sunshine on friday. Much more comfortable and temperatures are in the 70s. Expected rainfall within these storms and dont look at just any one area but the idea that some places could get 3 inches of rain where storms go over frequently, thats a possibility. So one to 3inch storm not out of the question. Air quality goes back to good tomorrow as this rain finally cleans out this atmosphere. So heres your sevenday accuweather forecast with a stormy day tomorrow, on friday clouds break for sun, i still contend that saturday is the better half of the weekend, rain should hold off until at least late in the day if not at night and im concerned that that rain is slow to move out on sunday, still be raining. So jury still out on that and then it turns drier and seasonable into next week so we will track these storms through the evening hours, sunny on the west side but storming like crazy over parts of the area. We know youre going to continue to monitor it. Of course. Thank you, lee.
