This thing happened so quickly the bad guy barely got in to the second door of this bank branch when he pulled that gun, cops say, and was promptly shot by the security guard. Reporter it was rush hour on this busy stretch of franklin avenue. People running home from work, running errands, getting cash, when a man walked in to this chase branch and pulled a gun. Entered the bank, announced the robbery and pointed a black handgun at two security guards that were located inside the bank. Reporter but he may not armed as well. One of them a retired Police Officer pulled his own weapon and opened fire, hitting the wouldbe robber several times as innocent bystanders hit the floor. Tonight crime scene investigators scoured the bank for clues while outside they ran every license plate to try to here. Hes now in the hospital where he needed surgery for his injuries. Back live, this bank branch closed. It is still a crime scene as investigators continue to figure out exactly what took place here. They say this bank branch actually has been hit some number of times in the past. Its not clear exactly when and how many times. But police want to know if the suspect who was shot tonight might possibly have been responsible for past robberies here. Happening now, con ed crews are working to restore Natural Gas Service to a building in manhattan after a gas leak triggered evacuations. About 500 build ings were forced out. The utility says service should be restored by tomorrow morning. What happened in that park . That question baff ling police tonight as four of the five suspects in that alleged gang rain in brooklyn are released the das office admitting it will not meet its friday deadline to secure indictments against the teens. An attorney for one of the boys says its a step in the right direction in a case that is only proved to confuse investigators. I see an incredible amount of doubt, an incredible amount of reason for the District Attorneys Office to really look at this. The das office will use the next 180 days as allowed by law to build their case. That will include dna evidence. The fifth suspect is being held on a prior charge. An Elementary School suddenly finds itself with an outbreak of norovirus. Ps12 in woodside. Its happened over the last two days. The school will be open tomorrow. Its not clear how many students will show up tomorrow. Also tomorrow the funeral for one of the Young Columbia University students killed in a bus crash in central america. Attacked on east tremont avenue, just two blocks from his apartment. But he had no idea he had been slashed until he rushed in to the bathroom to wash off the blood and saw a horrifying image in the mirror. There was blood all over the i didnt know i was slashed until i saw the deep cuts across my face. Reporter these pictures were taken after the attack in joses room at st. Barnabus hospital where he lay for hours, replaying it in his mind. He was walking home from a neighborhood restaurant when a man walked toward him. Once i passed him it happened really fast. I was pushed, i asked him whats going on then he hit me across the face and i fell down. When i got up he hit me again and i fell down again. Reporter jose is a brick layer and his daughter depends on the money that he sends home to his family in honduras. He says he never saw a knife and says the attack was entirely unprovoked. I have no idea. I didnt recognize the guy. There are some crazy people who live in the streets. But i really dont know why this happened to me. It happened early monday morning. Its illegal to give away public park land and then on top of that they want the public to pay for this facility. Weve not yet reached an agreement. Having them work in a park thats not carfree, thats not free of pedestrians or cyclists is not going to change the fact that theyre still being put in danger. Eyewitness News Reporter Tim Fleischer talking to a father whose daughter was killed by a school bus and wants sensors on buses. Reporter there sits a potential life saver. With this detection center, Bob Osullivan knows when he pulls up to wicroft Elementary School he knows when and where students are around his bus. It tells us to stop, pause, and look. Reporter Eyewitness News got an exclusive look at the sds, a series of these sensors placed strategically around the bus, detecting any movement within 10 feet. Mike is with the controls that manufacturers the sensors. Because this is where the children are getting on and off. Weve also done two censors on the backside here to pick up obstacles. This is probably the most critical area right here. This is a microwavebased technology. Works in snow, sleet, inclement weather. Reporter the system is being closely followed as new jersey lawmakers consider abigails law that would require all new buses to be equipped with censors. The proposed law is named after 18 month abigail who was killed by a bus in 2003. Her father supports the legislation. No reason why buses shouldnt be equipped with the same type of alarms and cautionary devices to prevent a tragedy that ive endured.
