Lights up on the map of San Francisco the unfortunate location for people are gotten seriously hurt or killed trying to get around San FranciscoPolice Department thats why that is the treatment the first of its kind protected intersections we wouldnt be here without the leadership of mayor ed lee the support of board of supervisors, i want to acknowledge jane kim its r hes been a strong supporter of the streets a great work by the department of public works to help design and implement just kind of work and strong advocacy from folks like the San FranciscoBicycle Coalition to pursue us thats why ear here wouldnt have been possible without the the leadership of city hall is please help me welcome mayor ed lee. clapping. thank you ed reiskin and thank you to the mta for working closely with many agencies to put the citys very first protected intersection together and to see how this role can help safety been the premium policy for the streets so thank you to the Bicycle Coalition, public works and walk sf and livable city working with our city agrees as well right here in a z inspector duffy, see the craft above you on the streets everyone using walking and bicyclists in particular intersection we have now to the data we have done prior to this change documented over 2 hundred people ride there to intersection to get to work thats as a an invaluable piece of data at the looked at the Accident Data the fatality date to inform us this was an important intersection to make that change so hopefully everyone driving a vehicle will appreciate pleasant users for this inspector, next item. People using different modes of transportation from walking and biking thats why that intersection was designed in. Way in which of the turns or more safer and slowed down and that the need to have much more alert of everybody users the intersection will be appreciated by that design i want to congratulate everyone for doing this because that will be a good test how integrated most transportation will work in a urban city like San Francisco i appreciate the design here i want to allow it to really flower to if we have data that informs us on challenging intersection well do those kind of safer ways to get everyone to appreciate the multiple you used going on i see tom livable city is here an advocate along with the coalition im here to more than obvious to support in effort in getting to vision zero and make sure that every project we identify regardless of whether we put a ballot measure if pass were trying to make that happen no matter what were committed to making vision zero and reality in the next few years and need to work with everybody thank you for cooperating and make sure were always doing the right thing and add my thanks to supervisor kim not here but a strong advocate for this to happen thanks. clapping. thank you, mr. Mayor the mayor mentioned the design of this intersection is being unique and design as the mayor said to slow down people and improve the visibility no matter how youre coming out or the mode you can see each other and reduces the conflict this unique design was the first for us in San Francisco it is relatively new in the United States though its a been designed used elsewhere in the world a lot close work between our agency and public works we the mta staff do the preliminary kind of the comprehensible and engagement them with the engineers over at the public works that is new to the design and public works contractors come in and do the physical work and the sfmta folks come in and that but in the stripping and the so forth a collaborative effort and mayor ed lee directed all city agencies to Work Together in a coordinated way to get the improvements done i want acknowledge of the sfmta our livable city section is here and mike one of the explosive wife designers and crews coordinating with public works and the sign shops to get those projects a lot of folks Work Together and the public works grateful to have a Strong Partnership want to welcome our public works director Mohammed Nuru. clapping. thank you e line e ed and thank you, mayor ed lee since 2011 when we passed the road bond we really had quite a few a number of opportunities role to improve how people move around San Francisco and seen more people bicycling and Walking Around the city our agency has been working closely with the Bicycle Coalition and sf works really to make it easily for people to get around the city as you heard from the mayor and ed this is a critical spot that is an intersection where people connect to various neighborhood and market to downtown or up to the castro or towards the financial district our designers work and this is the first protected zone that we are rolling out there will be several and as you can see light areas for people that can feel safe when we cross the street and making that easier for people that are using this and so weve very, very happy to be part of the design you know it is what San Francisco needs at that time more people are walking bicycling and our agency will continue to make our city safe we are a big supporter of vision zero policy and well continue to doing everything we can to make our city wonderful and more enjoyable for everyone temperatures. Thank you, mohammed and the contractors to make that possible and all the leadership and is coordination from within city hall the real benefit of what is different vision zero is a Community Partnership with the city it is not just the city but our Community Groups it is the coalition of dozens of groups close recognizey and neighborhoods and business groups coming together to support vision zero and one of the lead voices particularly when it comes to bike safety it the San FranciscoBicycle Coalition at the theyve been relentless for safety and pushing us to do more faster and better and thats pressure that stays on us everyday helps us to get this done we appreciate the leadership and the pressure from the Bicycle Coalition and were glad to be joined by executive director bryan. Thanks ed. Thank you ed reiskin and Mohammed Nuru and thank you, mayor ed lee for your living room in adopting the safety improvements that will make our streets safer and help us to chief achieve it. This will help to reduce the casinos of night vision and hopefully that will be embarrassed in other corridors across the city i want to applaud the staff of the sfmta so for graces new ideas and xernts and looking forward to hearing from people that walk and bike and drive and seeing that Feedback Incorporated to the design i know many of the members of the Bicycle Coalition have excited about the redesign and it is working beautifully and the cars are making the right turns that slowing down behind you he before the redesign of this intersection cars with speed there and try to get across the bike lanes so we need more complete streets projects to protect and design and build xroiz for the health and safety of everyone that walks and drives with geneva and so the streets approaching the redesign protection should be considered along 80s coordinate in order to help the city improve the Street Safety and achieve vision zero. Thanks bryan and as bryan said gathering well be feedback from people that bike through the z that walk and drive through it and as the mayor said well be doing an evaluation to see what is working and not and other parts of city finally i want to acknowledge the 0 folks out here with the jack hammers powerfully concrete and from a construction were the ones that were contracted to do this around the city and want to give them a shout out this project and many others and the other contractors that work with side benefit of all that work were trading jobs for San Francisco businesses thats it we look forward to seeing how this works and it seems to be working as designed works well and safely i hope to keep that that way everyone of the fatality collisions we hear and read about through throughout the year tragic and every one of them is preventable that is to help to prevent them along with educating people when the laws and about how to get around town safely and changing the laws but that work is important we can get to zero with projects like this thanks very much we appreciate everyone coming out here we are at the embarcadero. We are standing at one of locations for the street artists. Can you tell me about this particular location, the program . This location is very significant. This was the very first and only location granted by the board of supervisors for the street artist when the Program Began in 1972. How does a person become a street artist . There are two major tenants. You must make the work yourself and you must sell the work yourself. A street artist, the license, then submitting the work to a committee of artists. This committee actually watches them make the work in front of them so that we can verify that it is all their own work. What happened during the holiday to make this an exciting location . This would be a magic time of year. You would probably see this place is jammed with street artists. As the no, there is a lottery held at 6 in the morning. That is how sought after the spaces are. You might get as many as 150 street artists to show up for 50 spaces. What other areas can a licensed street artist go to . They can go to the Fishermans Wharf area. They can go in and around union square. We have space is now up in the castro, in fact. How many are there . We have about 420. Are they here all year round . Out of the 420, i know 150 to sell all year round. I mean like fiveseven days a week. Are they making their living of of this . This is their sole source of income for many. How long have you been with this program. How much has it changed . I have been with the Program Since it began 37 and a half years ago but i have seen changes in the trend. Fashion comes and goes. I think that you can still find plenty of titis perhaps. This is because the 60s is retro for a lot of people. I have seen that come back, yes. People still think of this city as the birth of that movement. Great, thank you for talking about the background of the program. Im excited to go shopping. I would like you to meet two street artists. This is linda and jeremy. Night said to me to print them nice to meet you. Can you talk to me about a variety of products that use cell . We have these lovely constructed platters. We make these wonderful powder bowls. They can have a lot of color. York also using your license. You are also using your license. This means that i can register with the city. This makes sure that our family participated in making all of these. This comes by licensed artists. The person selling it is the person that made it. There is Nothing Better than the people that made it. I would like you to meet michael johnson. He has been in the program for over 8 years. Nice to me you. What inspired your photography . I am inspired everything that i see. The greatest thing about being a photographer is being able to show other people what i see. I have mostly worked in cuba and work that i shot here in San Francisco. What is it about being a street artist that you particularly like . I liked it to the first day that i did it. I like talking to mentum people. Talking about art or anything that comes to our minds. There is more visibility than i would see in any store front. This would cost us relatively very little. I am so happy to meet you. I wish you all of the best. You are the wonderful artist that makes these color coding. Nice to me to. I have been a street artist since 1976. How did you decide to be a street artist . I was working on union square. On lunch hours, i would be there visiting the artist. It was interesting, exciting, and i have a creative streak in me. It ranges from tshirts, jackets, hats. What is the day of the life of a street artist . They have their 2536 in the morning. By the end of the day, the last people to pack the vehicle probably get on their own at 7 30 at night. Nice to me to condemn the nice to meet you. It was a pleasure to share this with you. I hope that the bay area will descend upon the plaza and go through these arts and crafts and by some holiday gifts. That would be amazing. Thank you so much for the hard work that you do. Hi, my name is jamie hooper. In this episode, we are featuring the romantic park locations in your very own backyard. This is your chance to find your heart in San Francisco with someone special. Our first look out is here at buena vista park, a favorite with couples and dog lovers. It is as old as its neighbor and both have a significant forest, a refreshing retreat from urban life. The pass that meander we do under a canopy of 0, redwood, pine, and eucalyptus. Chill out and this environment and you might see butterflies and dandelions. Blue jays fly between the eucalyptus. It is ada accessible. Public transit is plentiful. Six, 24, or 71 bus. We have conquered the steps, we walked the dogs, and we have enjoyed a beautiful view the park has to offer. This is the place to take someone special and enjoyed a beautiful look out. Come to corona heights, located in the heart of this district. It offers a spectacular view of the downtown skyline, the bay bridge, and the east bay. The park is one of the best kept secrets. Unlike twin peaks, it is hardly ever crowded. On any given day, you will run into a few locals. Hop on a 37 bus to get there with that any parking worries. Locals can bring their dogs to run with other dogs. There is also grass for small dogs. It is a great place. It is a wonderful place for the city to provide these kind of parks. The dog owners appreciate it. Take time to notice the wildflowers on the grassland. And keep your head on the lookout for hawks and other bird life. Take your camera and be prepared to review the city in a way you will not forget. It is prominent with beautiful formations that are perfect to watch the sunrise from the east over the bay. This is another one of our great look out. We are at Mount Davidson. It has the highest point of elevation in San Francisco, 928 feet. This is the place for you to bring someone special. Enjoy all of the pathways, trails, and greenery that surrounds you. It provides a peaceful oasis of Public Open Space and great hiking trails. The spectacular view offers a Perfect Place to watch the sunrise, or, sunset, with someone you love. It is a good place to get away from the hectic life of the city. Get some fresh air. The view is fantastic. Wear sturdy shoes to conquer the trail, you have the feeling of being in a rain forest. Mount davidson is also a great place to escape the noise and the apostle of the city with your partner. Bustle of the city with your partner. It is quite a hike to the top at Mount Davidson but the view is worth every step. This is the place to bring that someone special. The maus coney Center Project is transformation of the Convention Center and it is not only addition and increased space but also a transformation of the urban neighbor around it in a positive way. 25th largest Convention Center in the country but the conventions are getting bigger so with this extension it is 13 largest we have been under construction a year and a half and set to complete the construction in 2018. It generated over 9 billion in San Francisco 35 percent of viz 2rs coming to San Francisco are coming to maus coney. 2500 jobs will be created. If we didnt do the expansion we would luce 200 million in taxes a year. The conventions they are talking about going other cities with ample [inaudible] and exhibit space and not come to San Francisco. There is a lot of [inaudible] we are at a point now where our [inaudible] two halve oz the mos connie and think what we desire is one space. We are adding space about 200,000 space. We are connecting the two existing north and south exhibition halls that excavate under Howard Street to increase the largest exhibition space to 1 contig ws space over 500,000 square feet. The spot im standing in will be inside the lobby. The building will be pushed out to Howard Street and connected north and south above and under ground. When you go on the north our south side you enter into a hall that is divided into major ways this is Public Private partnership. The Hotel Industry [inaudible] splitting it up of the building. Since we have a north and south Howard Street it [inaudible] to make [inaudible] improving the bridges to make them more accessible so go over Howard Street [inaudible] developed to look at several different proposals for a light [inaudible] to work with that bridge and the selection of the [inaudible] he is on what i think is a beautiful piece that is very animated. You will be able to see it as [inaudible] cross the bridge and can see it as a resident of San Francisco looking up. There is a second bridge and this bridge replacing an existing bridge over Howard Street that links yerba buena gardens to a childrens playground. Make a much larger public space as well as aplaza space that brings you up to that in a visible way. We worked on the playground to make it safe and invited and added more open space the area will be connected with the neighborhood. [inaudible] much better space for everyone. Why is such a fundamental part [inaudible] could be thought of as columns and beams [inaudible] the areas that you walk to check in prior to [inaudible] all those activities [inaudible] opposed to [inaudible] we thought of ways to bring light into these occupied spaces including skylights and [inaudible] highest level of [inaudible] recycled steel. The concrete is [inaudible] we will be harvesting all the rain water and storm water and reusing it. In [inaudible] they extend down into the aquifer level of the water level which means water is being pumped out to remove the pressure and there are over 15 million gallons of water per year that maus coney center pumps out so the water is wasted. Our idea is disconnect the ground water system from the [inaudible] and reuse the water and save and preserve and use it for [inaudible] and use it for other irrigation uses. We have excess water to fill up [inaudible] there will be limited traffic impact during construction there is a 8 month period where we have to take a lane of traffic out from Howard Street so we can expand the tunnel. We anticipate the construction to be minimal. [inaudible] make the center statef the art and much more competitive. [inaudible] having the space. [inaudible] underneath howard. Having [inaudible] this is a [inaudible] worked with the residential, the merchants in the neighborhood, the non profits to make sure this is a vibrant area. Even if you dont come to the convention and enjoy the public space, it is something that helps revitalize the neighborhood and bring energy to the neighborhood and more people to the neighborhood and shops and retail and shocase San Francisco around the world.
