canyon in our white house for the to be one percent of one percent none of the commitments have changed we must stay the cowards to make sure that Small Businesses and seniors are protected from the outside special interests and rampant gentrification people are off the affordability cliff you demanded change we brought forth Great Britain policy that has once again made San Francisco a National Leader last year commissioner kim and i proposed the maximum feasible amount of Affordable Housing in new development and created a requirement for marching housing if we want to keep our families in 2, 3, 4 town and keep our families in San Francisco we must house them if we want to get the homeless off the street we must house them if we want diverse Neighborhood House the 60 percent of San Francisco that qualifies more Affordable Housing and, yes this is going to be mean a little bit less profit for Developers Im sure theyll get by looking over the past year im proud of what we accomplished together he pledge to take on the shortterm rentals with the industry and have passed common sense regulations that the cities are looking at in order to protect ourville Housing Stock and with the mayor vote and a legislature from airbnb we still have work to do the Unprecedented Coalition of Hotel Workers and owners and tenants and landlords and neighborhood leaders have made it clear theyll not let people be over stood out by profit and greedy received a in my note with a person living with hiv that dpftd any patterns on the campaign trail he reminded me not to give up the fight thank you robert fewer friendship and encouragement i place a moratorium on converting the valuable singleroom occupancies hotels the only housing for the neighborhood living on fixed incomes assess i passed finance reform to eliminate the elected officials with the past support of 76 percent we passed a 200 and 61 Million Dollars available prevention bond indeed prop c was the only measure on our November Ballot that addresses our Affordable Housing crisis and the only measure rigging third street majority vote that passed and supervisor president london breed supervisor sandra fewer was short im using her time and we rei cannot the disgraceful attempts by the board of realtors by voting down proposition 2 and u by a margin and did all of that together i want to thank you San Francisco for not buying the height that deep pockets can afford and not giving up housing prevention have taken on a greater urgency in the ill not say risking one constituent reminding us the federal government attacking our Community Across the city r across the country people dont feel safe outside of San Francisco to be displaced is to lose a safety net and can mean the diversities literally between life and death for some people obviously we weve got a lot more work to do and housing is only a part of it many of you know im a proud environment squatting of San Francisco as senator mark leno with well aware well be in water in our lifetime and we must plan for how we occupy our place along did bay now ive been honored together with supervisor kim to represent San Francisco interests on the bay conservatism commission it is fascist work i know that many communities are looking to lead on Sea Level Rise and we must structured our urban 1ri789 everyone with a blog is a housing expert some will argue no such thing as neighborhood character cha character but supervisor sandra fewer stashgd to nicely at her inaugural speak everyone that whacks the streets of San Francisco historic neighborhoods knows different no other place like San Francisco and her neighborhood make they are tick whether preferring the third flower mart in the criticize or one last vibrant chinatown or the water shed every stick adds up to one of the even vices of the world on the minds of my constituents ill be rim not to mention our Police Department and any sincere hopes for the future im lucky colleagues all 11 district are treated equal but district number 3 is absent equal im lucky to have one of the best captains in the country david lazzaro. clapping. supervisor avalos wanted him back so bad captain lazarus is truly a model of the Community Policing if nob hill to chineseamerican have him and the working men and women on speed dial it captain is everywhere and has a plan i want to acknowledge our hard working and the reforms that William Scott burglary be leading in 2015 speaking the challenges in the year ahead i want to be on the record that responsibility governors means taking our budget process seriously and making the hard choices even when they dont fit in that vein im really saying this to the four new members of the board i note that i was the only member of this body to vote definition the budget last year the first time i ever voted against a budget and 9 times 1r0e79 for a budget i dont feel we were balancing it responsibly and i believe in prioritizing the critical needs and planning for the future i believe in identifying the progressive revenue that will not disproportionately impact the most vulnerable i dont believe in burdening the taxpayers with regressive takes when weve not balanced our load in the chambers i dont believe building in labeling the business molding quote unquote showing when their raking in major profit and hoping that problem will not communitybased away and tax breaks for corporations are good Public Policies taxpayers deserve their tax before they decide on funding for emerging needs, however, preying that need may be ive learned none trusts a government that designed a budget that places all the budget skadz on the public as i said voters elected us to do a tough job i pledge even when easier to punt i will continue to work for the progressive and democratic principles of petitions and justice the rule of law yes checks and balances and power and respect for all people and Groups Holding different views with the gift of some years i pledge to work with humor a sense of love for the city im truly looking forward to another 4 years one of the greatest jobs anyone can have i know my staff is as well i want to this thing my City Hall Team that make is so much easier their individually and collectively incredible thank you sunny and cop i didnt and lee i cant express any appreciation enough. clapping. and thank you district 3 your supervisor is fired up and ready to go. clapping. okay. Thank you supervisor peskin for soaking up not only supervisor sandra fewer time but everyone else on the board laughter all right. Supervisor yee youre up next. laughter . Really . laughter feel free to be brief. I was instructed to cut any speak by 25 percent because of my colleague. Take our time supervisor the floor is yours. First of all, welcome the audience that is here the families and the friends and supporters you are the important people that was able to get the 11 of us elected and you deserve roumdz i want to welcome back the first of the even number of supervisors who didnt have to run for anything theyre sitting here today with us thank you. Well get our revenge two years from now and welcome back the reelected supervisors supervisor president london breed and supervisor peskin as well as the newly elected supervisors Suzy Loftus Sandra fewer and hillary and welcome our newly appointed supervisor jeff welcome to the chambers wed like to kick some ass. Like everyone else that will speak we want to thank everyone that helped us get here start with the voters in my district for allowing me to you serve another 4 years a prestige as many will acknowledge here today, this is such a special position to be able not only to help the entire city but also focused own the people that live in our particular district we have a wonderful district like everywhere else in San Francisco people want to live a life theyre successful and their families are successful and their children successful i want to thank my political consultant michael hes a little bit upset i cannot get him a ticket to get here oh, he made that in whoops Something Else has to give him a ticket i also want to acknowledge my staff first there are two no longer my staff they be the backbone and raised the bar in my office but are here today, this is calling names clapping. and olivia. clapping. and today now i have 3 wonderful staff member that actually was able to swing the tail end of my first four years into very productive years and they will continue to be the ones that will support me and make that happen and also their wonderful in working with other Staff Members of the supervisors and they are where are they behind me jen low, and erica. clapping. the biggest reason im here today to start any second term as supervisor because of the support i always seem to get and receive from my family it was my brother nelson that said to me yesterday when we asked his band to 2k5ek9 a song to his family and it is a song by the sly and the family stones no it is not but the name is we are family but thank you nelson i want to acknowledge that my two sisters are here today vicky and more and more remand they made 2 possible to make me a good adult as a kid i never got into too much trouble they didnt were successful but i was got me through my childhood thank you very much and i also not last but certainly my immediate family are the most important to me at this point of my life theyve given me permission to seek office this is my fourth time ive been successful in running and twice on the school board and twice as a supervisor it is only made possible because they gave and said to me go for it and serve the community as most of my adult life this was four years ago and same thing those are my wonderful, wonderful two daughters of me and. clapping. my wife of many decades kathy. clapping. well something new four years ago i couldnt say that will you for years later i have two doubled our size of the family now two sons james and dan and oh, my goodness now i have two new grandchildren from the end of the last year and one of them is here he was asleep through everybodys speech when we heard any voice he woke up this jamison. I want to make sure my granddaughter you kouth couldnt come shes a little bit more you know she were able to speak shell tell supervisor peskin hurry up but prove i have two grandkids. clapping. since the beginning of the first term my family as grown ive said that already and basically, the when i been what i focused on four years ago it about family and children thats the lens ive always looked through when i have to consider policies and legislation in this chamber. So it is not any surprises that by the way, one thing that people didnt point out here is that this is a majority majority parents member board. We have more parents here than weve seen on the board ever so congratulations well drive it; right . Parents family thing so its not my surprise to anyone ill fight to welcome families in San Francisco we need to do better, we keep on seeing the families are children leave the city we need to reverse that trend we did that in the first four years we looked at our children and formed the mayor and superintendent being the cochair of our family and city council to look at how we want our children to be treated and highway to make our families successful in San Francisco we need to continue that some of the things oozed mentioned that is really important for me is as we talk about Affordable Housing for people we need to inner fuss the discussion how we have Affordable Housing for families with children that is something that is beginning we need to do better on that we have no policies around that issue we need to create policy so that we actually make it real and improve the services so for the Public Schools to make sure im not talking about k through 12 only but pre k we need in support of education of our residents to make sure that we have a workforce that will continue to make our city successful we also one of the things that is really missing were beginning to address this is the issue about Early Education we are doing well when it comes to preschool around 3 to 5 but getting an f mark for those that are zero to 3 we really dont have much in the city for them we need to support that we need to support the families cant afford to not only pay the rent but 25,000 for childcare im hoping any colleagues that are parents will be very supportive of that issue that is a very important issue that will makeorbreak San Francisco when it comes to children and families the other issue that is really important for all of us is that we want to make our streets safe pedestrians, for bicyclists, and for drivers we need to pass more policies that will support our goals of vision zero to get is by 2024 to no fatalities. We need to do better were trying but havent done real well that is something that im hoping all of us will join hands and pass policies around that the other thing that i want to pension mention that San Francisco should support the tech developments we must not let technology and Tech Companies control San Francisco technology should make the lives of san franciscans better not worse. We must tackle the problem of shortterm rental economy that is ruining our Housing Stock and we must also look at how we control those cars that are what do you call those things selfdriving cars and those ubers and lyft Companies Taking over the streets one of the things im looking forward so theres a lot of things differences in opinion i know well will Work Together as our president elect trump gets into office we must stand together and push back and make sure our values and cultures of San Francisco is for ever maintained thank you very much. clapping. thank you supervisor yee and again congratulations on your reelection. Now i will recognize the supervisor from district 8 our new colleagues supervisor jeff. clapping. still trying to figure out how to work the mike. Thank you supervisor president london breed. So id like to introduce my husband phil berry. clapping. hes the im getting hints from the audience for you to stand up so when i was appointed im going to sit down sorry still working this out when i was appointed i told the mayor that he had appointed a family my husband and daughter were a unit were all in that together and i want to echo supervisor yees comments about the importance of parents and families supervisors finite have kids in the San Francisco Public Schools and former Board Members and this is important to all of us thank you, mayor ed lee for his confidence in me for the appointment and im honored and humbled by that i want to deeply thing Supervisor Scott Wiener for his Outstanding Service i know well be working with him as your senator in sacramento i want to acknowledge before i forgot things about my husband truly i wouldnt be here today, if not for him you know weve lost so many people in the community and the willingness of my husband to marry an hiv person and raise a family i never thought id see 40 my generation has been. Late and never thought ill be married and never thought id have a child im going to be 50 and a have a husband and child and owe this to the city for all the work and also owe to all of us to our lesbian sisters that take care of us and walked with us in those dark, dark days and Still Holding United States together and acknowledge two of the finest people in my life and two beyond jones you know know them historic historic figures. clapping. so 0 o one of the reasons i stepped back political around raising my kid is San Francisco is under a threat from donald trump and people in washington our immigrant community has already been targeted so many of the people that we worked with over the years reduced the health disparticipant through the implementations of the Affordable Health care act through mel 200 and 50 thousand san franciscans receive care with the Affordable Health care 90 thousand on medical samth this president threatens to roll back lgbt rights right we take for granted as a 11th hour e lieutenant governors noouchl well need the fierceness to respond to the attacks all our communities will be understand im not going to speak much longer but i do want to leave with a thought i was kind of alluding to this you know when aids first struck 36 years ago a lot of Community Responded with hate with fear there were kwaurn tennis and this was gods will not San Francisco San Francisco came together mayor brown became the first funding for aids research in the country clapping. and, of course, mayor feinstein but the entire community were not marginalized cared for i think as we think about moving forward and really what are likely to be very, very, very dark times i just ask that may we not fight amongst ourselves but together against our common threats and looking forward to working with everyone thank you. clapping. thank you jeff and welcome to the board of supervisors. Why first of all, the staff that we live under a rigsd system that is circling unjust not more obvious than this moment so staircase and impossible to design that will be easier for us to fight that injustice and rigged system and politicians are going to have to take a side and it is going to be easier for us to educate people what is really going on it will be hard thats number one and number 2 people want to be engaged in levels i have never seen in my lifetime i was at a conference late last week 200 young women saying i want to run for office and run now i dont like the way the world is i want to take responsibility to change it thats the type of engagement well need if were going to fight back and make the change we want to make and number 3 lets face it the democratic part has lots of mind and hearts of people there needs to be a shift if we regain power im proud here in San Francisco both in the june election we won an election but yesterday we are progressives took the majority of seats in ab 17 and 19 representing us at the state level were headed in the right direction and when we have leaders like Bernie Sanders and elizabeth warning that are popular as at the federal level well see that change happen at the deckingic level as well this will make our work much easier here in San Francisco to advance any fundamental im and goal in life so i will end there is a ohio they would say. speaking foreign language. there is nothing bad that canned be turned into good thats truly how i feel im optimistic not only moment in history to maintain the status quo but advance the cause of our people im looking forward to working with every single one of you to advance the world thank you very much clapping. thank you, supervisor. Thank you supervisor cowen. clapping. again, thank you all for being here madam clerk, any other business before this commission . That concludes our business for today. Were adjourned. Everyone thank you for coming out on a beautiful sunny summer afternoon although i guess the first day of winter im ed reiskin and this huge interest in low income intersections in San Francisco so great to so, so see many of you here to celebrate a accomplishment for making streets of San Francisco safer as people know hopefully most people know city leaders in the mayor and board of supervisors and the commissions as well as stakeholders decided 3 years ago no longer tolerant and accept that people will die as they try to get around San Francisco so we adapted vision zero back in 2014 to eliminate traffic fatality by 2024 a number of ways we are work toward to goals and with an is redesign the streets to make them safer for all road users were doing that in all vision zero using date to drive us to where we can make the most impacts and when it comes to the streets we know from research by the department of health that a small amount of our streets 12 percent of our corridors and intersection are responsible for more than 70 percent i have our facility collisions where we are standing lights up on the map of San Francisco the unfortunate location for people are gotten seriously hurt or killed trying to get around San Francisco Police Department thats why that is the treatment the first of its kind protected intersections we wouldnt be here without the leadership of mayor ed lee the support of board of supervisors, i want to acknowledge jane kim its r hes been a strong supporter of the streets a great work by the department of public works to help design and implement just kind of work and strong advocacy from folks like the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition to pursue us thats why ear here wouldnt have been possible without the the leadership of city hall is please help me welcome mayor ed lee. clapping. thank you ed reiskin and thank you to the mta for working closely with many agencies to put the citys very first protected intersection together and to see how this role can help safety been the premium policy for the streets so thank you to the Bicycle Coalition, public works and walk sf and livable city working with our city agrees as well right here in a z inspector duffy, see the craft above you on the streets everyone using walking and bicyclists in particular intersection we have now to the data we have done prior to this change documented over 2 hundred people ride there to intersection to get to work thats as a an invaluable piece of data at the looked at the Accident Data the fatality date to inform us this was an important intersection to make that change so hopefully everyone driving a vehicle will appreciate pleasant users for this inspector, next item. People using different modes of transportation from walking and biking thats why that intersection was designed in. Way in which of the turns or more safer and slowed down and that the need to have much more alert of everybody users the intersection will be appreciated by that design i want to congratulate everyone for doing this because that will be a good test how integrated most transportation will work in a urban city like San Francisco i appreciate the design here i want to allow it to really flower to if we have data that informs us on challenging intersection well do those kind of safer ways to get everyone to appreciate the multiple you used going on i see tom livable city is here an advocate along with the coalition im here to more than obvious to support in effort in getting to vision zero and make sure that every project we identify regardless of whether we put a ballot measure if pass were trying to make that happen no matter what were committed to making vision zero and reality in the next few years and need to work with everybody thank you for cooperating and make sure were always doing the right thing and add my thanks to supervisor kim not here but a strong advocate for this to happen thanks. clapping. thank you, mr. Mayor the mayor mentioned the design of this intersection is being unique and design as the mayor said to slow down people and improve the visibility no matter how youre coming out or the mode you can see each other and reduces the conflict this unique design was the first for us in San Francisco it is relatively new in the United States though its a been designed used elsewhere in the world a lot close work between our agency and public works we the mta staff do the preliminary kind of the comprehensible and engagement them with the engineers over at the public works that is new to the design and public works contractors come in and do the physical work and the sfmta folks come in and that but in the stripping and the so forth a collaborative effort and mayor ed lee directed all city agencies to Work Together in a coordinated way to get the improvements done i want acknowledge of the sfmta our livable city section is here and mike one of the explosive wife designers and crews coordinating with public works and the sign shops to get those projects a lot of folks Work Together and the public works grateful to have a Strong Partnership want to welcome our public works director Mohammed Nuru. clapping. thank you e line e ed and thank you, mayor ed lee since 2011 when we passed the road bond we really had quite a few a number of opportunities role to improve how people move around San Francisco and seen more people bicycling and Walking Around the city our agency has been working closely with the Bicycle Coalition and sf works really to make it easily for people to get around the city as you heard from the mayor and ed this is a critical spot that is an intersection where people connect to various neighborhood and market to downtown or up to the castro or towards the financial district our designers work and this is the first protected zone that we are rolling out there will be several and as you can see light areas for people that can feel safe when we cross the street and making that easier for people that are using this and so weve very, very happy to be part of the design you know it is what San Francisco needs at that time more people are walking bicycling and our agency will continue to make our city safe we are a big supporter of vision zero policy and well continue to doing everything we can to make our city wonderful and more enjoyable for everyone temperatures. Thank you, mohammed and the contractors to make that possible and all the leadership and is coordination from within city hall the real benefit of what is different vision zero is a Community Partnership with the city it is not just the city but our Community Groups it is the coalition of dozens of groups close recognizey and neighborhoods and business groups coming together to support vision zero and one of the lead voices particularly when it comes to bike safety it the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition at the theyve been relentless for safety and pushing us to do more faster and better and thats pressure that stays on us everyday helps us to get this done we appreciate the leadership and the pressure from the Bicycle Coalition and were glad to be joined by executive director bryan. Thanks ed. Thank you ed reiskin and Mohammed Nuru and thank you, mayor ed lee for your living room in adopting the safety improvements that will make our streets safer and help us to chief achieve it. This will help to reduce the casinos of night vision and hopefully that will be embarrassed in other corridors across the city i want to applaud the staff of the sfmta so for graces new ideas and xernts and looking forward to hearing from people that walk and bike and drive and seeing that Feedback Incorporated to the design i know many of the members of the Bicycle Coalition have excited about the redesign and it is working beautifully and the cars are making the right turns that slowing down behind you he before the redesign of this intersection cars with speed there and try to get across the bike lanes so we need more complete streets projects to protect and design and build xroiz for the health and safety of everyone that walks and drives with geneva and so the streets approaching the redesign protection should be considered along 80s coordinate in order to help the city improve the Street Safety and achieve vision zero. Thanks bryan and as bryan said gathering well be feedback from people that bike through the z that walk and drive through it and as the mayor said well be doing an evaluation to see what is working and not and other parts of city finally i want to acknowledge the 0 folks out here with the jack hammers powerfully concrete and from a construction were the ones that were contracted to do this around the city and want to give them a shout out this project and many others and the other contractors that work with side benefit of all that work were trading jobs for San Francisco businesses thats it we look forward to seeing how this works and it seems to be working as designed works well and safely i hope to keep that that way everyone of the fatality collisions we hear and read about through throughout the year tragic and every one of them is preventable that is to help to prevent them along with educating people when the laws and about how to get around town safely and changing the laws but that work is important we can get to zero with projects like this thanks very much we appreciate everyone coming out sustainable future. San francisco streets and puffs make up 25 percent of cities e citys land area more than all the parks combined theyre far two wide and have large flight area the pavement to parks is to test the variants by ininexpensive changing did new open spaces the city made up of streets in you think about the potential of having this space for a purpose it is demands for the best for bikes and families to gather. Through a collaborative effort with the department we the public works and the Municipal Transportation Agency pavement to parks is bringing Initiative Ideas to our streets. So the face of the street is the core of our program we have in the public rightofway meaning streets that can have areas perpetrated for Something Else. Im here with john francis pavement to parks manager and this parklet on van ness street first of all, what is a parklet and part of pavement to Parks Program basically an expense of the walk in a public realm for people to hang anti nor a urban acceptable space for people to use. Parklets sponsors have to apply to be considered for the program but they come to us you know saying we want to do this and create a new space on our street it is a Community Driven program. The program goes beyond just parklets vacant lots and other spaces are converted were here at playland on 43 this is place is cool with loots things to do and plenty of space to play so we came up with that idea to revitalizations this underutilized yard by going to the community and what they said want to see here we saw that everybody wants to see everything to we want this to be a space for everyone. Yeah. We partnered with the pavement to Parks Program and so we had the contract for building 236 blot Community Garden it start with a lot of jacuzzi hammers and bulldozer and now the point were planting trees and flowers we have basketball courts there is so much to do here. Theres a very full program that they simply joy that and meet the community and friends and about be about the lighter side of city people are more engaged not just the customers. With the help of Community Pavement to parks is reimagining the potential of our student streets if you want more information visit them as the pavement to parks or contact pavement to parks at sfgovtv.
