ah, in 2016 american diplomats began complaining of a variety of medical symptoms that included things from physical pain to ringing in the ears to cognitive difficulties. these symptoms were largely ignored at 1st, and then the term havana syndrome was coined. the u. s. government initially dismissed the symptoms as the product of crickets. yes, crickets, but something more sinister is likely behind it. i'm john kerry aku and you're watching the whistleblowers. 2 2 2 2 2 cabana syndrome is a perplexing condition when diplomats at the u. s. embassy and havana. cuba began reporting things like physical pain, migraines, nausea, ringing in the ears, and even in extreme circumstances. traumatic brain injuries, the state department and the defense department called the events anomalous health incidence. cia director william burns called them attacks. and after a preliminary look, the government decided that the situation was one of mass hysteria caused by nothing more than the noise made by crickets when they were seeking to mate with other crickets. that was ridiculous, of course. and it was wrong in the following months. in years, dozens of american diplomats and government officials in places as far flung as hanoi bogota, washington, australia, moscow and elsewhere reported symptoms associated with vanna syndrome, even a former station chief in moscow, resigned from the agency and led a lawsuit saying that he too was a victim of havana syndrome, and that the cia was not taking him or other victim seriously. doctor's now confirm that this syndrome is real. there is verifiable, damage done to victims, and many of them can show evidence of traumatic brain injuries. but there is no treatment, no rhyme or reason why some individual seem to be targeted, while others do not. and no admission from any element of the u. s. government that this is real and that something needs to be done about it. we're happy to be joined by dr. learned len burke. he's a russia born physician who came to the united states in 1994 to work for a pharmaceutical company in houston, texas, a naturalized citizen. len resides in suburban, chicago with his partner of 20 years, and he works in the regulatory field in 2019 he started experiencing symptoms of havana syndrome at his home. these symptoms are continuing to the present day. land was diagnosed with havana syndrome, formerly by the same team of experts that diagnosed us embassy personnel, medically evacuated from cuba. as a result of these debilitating attacks. dr. bur, has been on medical leave since 2021. his case was referred to the defense department by a neuro weapons expert from georgetown university. neither d o d nor the f b, i has made any steps to investigate his diagnosed and validated case of havana syndrome. len, welcome to the show. it's good to have you. nice to have nice to be with you. thanks for joining us. love start at the beginning. you began experiencing symptoms in 2019. tell us about what you were feeling back then. how these symptoms started and what led you to believe that you were suffering from havana syndrome? it started really out of the blue. oh. just unknown odd noises. end of sounds that nobody could hear only me. and them a ring ringing in the here are the gym assists. um well tonight is to go call them um my braces. oh, that was very um, some unusual sensation that i could, i could feel in. it was very painful. i am still an on going to this day. it's painful, debilitating and ah, it feels like nothing else. it feels like something grabs you. m 5. great. you like a lighting like it 24. 0 really? very. and in full of suddenly start suddenly in, in and disappear suddenly in leave you very all confused. ah, disoriented ah, ah blues equilibrium? i can walk in straight line sealants, lady on my feet. urine usual i, i've never encountered anything like this len. i want to point out at the outset here that you are a physician, a medical doctor, yourself aware, you know anatomy, you know your body, you follow medical developments and the symptoms didn't make any sense. so you went to your own dot doctor and you told him what you were experiencing. so what was the initial reaction from your own doctor? what did he tell you? i went to several doctors and they were really dumbfounded. they couldn't figure out what it was. i, i had to start doing my own research and i'm, i'm a physician, i'm scientifically minded. i had to starts a systematically investigating every possible hypothesis from a chemical that metals to arch systemic disorders. in then i'll also alden a psychiatric disorders that that's a possibility. i had to exclude that and i do not have downloaded a dual disorder. um, so what i did find is that there was a group of cuban diplomats. um that oh with the condition that with now call her syndrome. and um, they were examined by doctor hoffers, the university of miami who published his paper. i saw him up in it and i made an appointment. i spent the day there or do industry to a test and, and she diagnosed me with this condition um which it was absolutely oh, on believable to me that some would be due to me, a civilian law. diplomat. not in cuba. that was a big surprise. yeah. after this began happening to you as to plymouth in cuba, the state department and the cia commission studies to get to the bottom of the causes, at least that's what they said they would do. the state department's advisory group, it's called the jason adviser group finally said in early 2022. that it was not likely that the symptoms were being caused by a directed energy weapon. also in early 2022, the c. i a released a report saying that in 976 out of 1000 cases of havana syndrome, they could confirm that the symptoms were not a result of a hostile foreign power without drawing any definitive conclusions. these studies speculated that the causes of havana syndrome could be ultrasound waives, or could be the results of pesticides. but a blue ribbon panel of the national academies of sciences, engineering and medicine, said that the likeliest cause was microwave energy, specifically directed, pulsed r f energy. one of the doctors and experts told you about the origins of this thing . have you discussed with them the, the notion of r f energy or microwave pulse energy? absolutely. yes, this is mrs steele ill leading hypothesis. the pulse of directed pulse up, break frequency energy in the microwave range. we still believe in hypothesis and a dislike. most of the doctors in my entire up, oh, group of physicians felt that takes care of me. they're all on the same page. they understand that this is a new development, this is a new phenomenon, and they concur with the diagnosis of dr. hoffer. whoso a tells me that this is a, uh, uh, this kind of brain damage is um, a hallmark of directed energy. oh exposure. and it is an ssl, it's not something that you can just kitch walking down the street. that's not why fi, it's not just the regulates like a designer type of energy life. specifically peskin, specifically o b can be specifically directed to one's brain. um and in damage and, and, and into severe damage. and does this happen only in the vicinity of your home or your work, or does it happen at different places as you're going know about your business throughout the day? it does happen in, in, in different places. and at this point, anywhere i am, i traveled to different states state of the hotel. you rent them apartment, so i thought my may be, oh, it would be um, oh, easier there? oh no. anyway, i go it. oh reaches me out. i even travel to the missional radio, quiets on in west virginia. yes. oh there's oh oh there north hours. oh no south hours most no. oh why fi of moya? oh. oh. even cars with the oh. oh satellite radius. yeah, i'm all right, this is a, this is highland county, virginia. there's a, there's a u. s. naval facility there. and um, it's a, it's listening for signals coming from outer space and so there's no, oh, wireless interference at all. no cable tv, no cellphone towers, no, nothing. it's supposed to be a quiet zone. and i was a doctor. i you have to walk several miles to lead to those radars and i, i, i stood next to the biggest radar it met in the on and i got attacked just the way i'm inside of home. i'm attacked anywhere. i go the only relief i get when i travel fast enough in my car, but like 65 so many miles an hour. so perhaps there's some tracking system that doesn't catch up would be, but that's my hypothesis. i, i'm way, i'm a man of evidence. this is just my expect, which tell us about some of the lasting effects of havana syndrome we're told in the studies that the, the initial phase is a sonic disturbance. but the more dangerous part is that 15 percent of people who show havana syndrome symptoms have a 2nd phase that includes disruption to brain activity. has that been your experience? that is correct. um, we let me make sure that we use the right terminology when you say, so an acre exposure that implies are acoustic um waves. it is another acoustic if the work was the, everybody would have heard it. but microwaves. oh microwave attacks up in so there's no sound if it's it perceptions of south and so you are correct. see cdc, he should report in 2019 as describing it as a by facial disorder. so the phase one includes these attacks and the symptoms that follow, and then they're wanting a stage that basically represents sydney grain degradation. in what snug clear is, whether, whether or not those some are federal employees who came back from you in other places. ill experience, these attach, the reporting has been rather obscure about but there's some of some people specifically returned from china. they had these attacks also on us soil. as far as my case, i'm start in phase one, my attacks where these are sort of microwave concussions. it's a daily occurrence in i might, i'm stuck in phase mon and so as my brain degrading on steel and sen disaffected it. i can start in treatment. i can start in your habilitation, is it? have they been understanding supportive? have they been able to be helpful in any way? yes. oh, you know, john, you are as strong as the people you surround your yourself with that i and l. u that my partner, my best friend, my family, who by the way, reside in germany. they, initially, they were skeptical, but they understood, and they know me well. so up and there's evidence. so they're very extremely support my partner called every member on the intelligence committee. but the biggest challenge that i had in this whole situation is really coming to grips with reality that this is happening to me. right? this is, this is a, this is a really, it's a big built the small to, to realize that somebody's remotely damage in your brain and for a really unknown reason. i'm not a default. i don't holding secrets, i never worked for the government. and yet here i am having the same brain damage those cuban. yep. one people have some federal employees. so yes i oh, it's a, it's a really oh, it's a bad situation. anyway, you look, yeah, this is a tough one. tell us about your experience with people at the department of defense are on capitol hill or other governmental organizations related to havana syndrome . we know that d o d, the state department and the see i have studied their own personnel who have developed this syndrome. but what about private citizens like yourself? have you gotten any answers, any satisfaction from any element of the government? unfortunately, lots i, after i receive my diagnosis, i reached out to every elected official to every aren't from local police to the oh, local elected officials, all the way to your centers in the white house in, in every member of intelligence community than intelligence committee. nobody was even remotely interested in investigating right in, in looking into it because i was not a federal employee. yes, it's really absurd. these weapons are real. they exist the why wouldn't somebody use this weapons on us soil against civilians wise it on lead, limited to federal employees and, and the hvac that the act of the b a senate passed and the congress passed on. the president obama side into law is discriminatory. nature, what only certain people receive this damage that's absorbed in an on top of that, we know i'm just look at the 2016 act of acquisition of directed energy weapon systems. it's a document that was rather than the sum floor festival. the armed forces committee, we own this weapons, we know what they do, the, there's a definition in the fact that these weapons systems incapacitate personnel and degrade and damage personnel. not only who have been but people, so officials say of this is a mysterious condition. lynn. what are the next steps for you?
