That california clash may come down to buzzer beater, folks. Theres other races going on including paul ryan said he will vote for donald trump. First, today, in san diego, Hillary Clinton tried to score some points of her own with a Foreign Policy speech to kick off her fiveday California Home stretch tour before she faces off against Bernie Sanders in next tuesdays primary. The target was not Bernie Sanders. The man she expects to face off against the fall, donald trump. It was a big speech with a lot of sound bites. Heres the money sound bite. I believe the person the republicans have nominated for president cannot do the job. [ applause ] Donald Trumps ideas arent just different. They are dangerously incoherent. Theyre not even really ideas. Just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies. John, it was one of the biggest and best speeches clinton has given in entire campaign. How did she do . Were not going to be in the disagreement zone on the way you framed the question. I thought she did a great job. Ive said before, and ill say again, on Foreign Policy this will is a place where clinton has advantages in terms of resume and experience but a much greater command of world affairs. Can he clear the commander in chief threshold. Shell win the election and this was a very good start in making what im assume will be an argument she prosecutes all the way to election day. I was skeptical giving a speech on Foreign Policy was a good idea. It was a sustained attack on trump. She showed she could do it with humor. Its a sense this we nominate her. Its key because humor will be an important part of this. Cant beat trump with anger. Correct. I reserve judgment your early assessment this might be problematic. I think its a huge amount of good in that fight too. A lot of democrats, even those who like Bernie Sanders have concerns about sanders on Foreign Policy. You looked at clinton and said she can take trump on and that argument is undercut by how good she was on offense today. Okay. One of the golden rules of modern politics is you want to know what donald trump thinks about whats happening, just check his twitter feed. He fired off this tweet even before Hillary Clinton spoke. Quote, crooked Hillary Clinton, who i would love to call lying hillary is getting ready to totally misrepresent my Foreign Policy positions. S he tweeted bad performance. Reading poorly from the teleprompter. Well skill over the miss misspelling. Hes going to have to engage her in the substance of the criticisms. Trumps tweets were no match for her sustained attack. She predicted he would be tweeting out angry things and he did. For a number of voters, including women, married women, the contrast of somebody taking someone down in a sustained way versus 140 characters worked to her benefit. He did not do well and suffered from not having the army of opposition researchers and surrogates as she does. You cant beat her with twitter. On this question, he may have an argument with her later but lying hillary, crooked hillary has resonance on certain issues. Hes going to have to engage with her on substance and go toe to toe with her. She laid out very little today. Its still unclear where she wants to take the country on Foreign Policy. Shes got to think long and hard. That he both have to think hard about putting forward a positive agenda. Paul ryan made his announcement in an oped in the gazette. Ryan said hes voting for trump because he believes that the republican nominee presumptive would support the agenda he wants to pass through the house. So, john, the ryan endorsement expected but a big symbolic and substantive deal. Does it mean the Never Trump Movement was deader than it was yesterday . If you think of this week as the week in which the dreams of an independent candidate going up against donald trump and Hillary Clinton have boiled down to a relatively obscure staff writer as we said on the show with mr. French with an impressive resume, who will not be a big factor and now paul ryan expected but its symbolically its a huge thing. I think the Never Trump Movement now is done. Its going to send a signal to donors and a lot of people. I think trump has known for a while he would get this backing when he was asked about it at his press conference last week, he made it pretty clear, wink, wink, nod, nod, lets see what happens. I do think theres still some work to be done particularly with the financial community. An understated manner, but he put a certain he added one thin additional layer of gloss that a lot of people are uncomfortable with trump and the Republican Party have adopted. Their argument is i dont love him, but hes better than Hillary Clinton. Ryan put that extra level of gloss to say i dont like Hillary Clinton. Well get something from trump, maybe. It gives you a bit of extra rationalizing power. Donald trump was also on d. That means defense, today, over he has school. Aka, Trump University. Trumps campaign posted a video that showed handful of students praising the education that they received at t. U. Today on twitter, trump called the california judge quote, very bias and unfair, end quote. Here is good news for anyone with transferable credits. Trump University May be back by popular demand or regardless of the lack of such demand. He said hes told executives to reopen after the civil litigation ends. Normally faced with these types of charges and criticism, candidates would use their campaign and surrogate to put on a full court press. Donald trumps defense boils down to donald trump. Does he need a full compliment in. This week will go down as one of the biggest weeks of campaign. Between now and the conventions is when this will be won or lost. I think its very difficult to fight back the way hes fighting back when, make no mistake, the press is very sympathetic to the argument the Clinton Campaign is making that trump u. Was a scam. Trump is fighting back in way thats worked for him before but the assault has just begun. If they dont look at the coverage and see how its different, theyre making a big mistake. Think about a well coordinated attack in politics. Youve got not just the candidate, youve got the surrogates. Youve got the staff and then in the case youve got on paper, in the stories of the Washington Post, New York Times and the documents revealed or unsealed, youve got employees, former employees, voices from within saying scam, scheme, frauds. If youre donald trump, you have a big megaphone but thats coming at you from a lot of directions. This all could be happening before our eyes. Coming up, well talk to the attorney general about the civil case hes brought against trump u. Well do a play by play of Hillary Clinton with the take down of trump Foreign Policy. But with added touches you cant get everywhere else, like claim free rewards. Or safe driving bonus checks. First, before we talk, lets listen to Hillary Clinton contrasting herself with donald trump. This is a man who said that more countries should have Nuclear Weapons including saudi arabia. This is someone who has threatened to abandon our allies in nato. He says Climate Change is a hoax invented by the chinese. He says he has Foreign Policy experience because he ran the Miss Universe pageant in russia. I wrestled with the chinese over a climate deal. Brokered a ceasefire between israel and hamas. Negotiated the reduction of Nuclear Weapons with russia. Twisted arms to bring the world together in global sanctions in iran and stood up for the rights of women, religious minorities and lgbt people around the world. It seems Hillary Clinton is doing a couple of things. One is to attack donald trump and offer a defense of her own record of Foreign Policy. How well do you think she pulled off both elements of that strategy today . I think thats right. What struck me the most about this speech and it goes to the former of attacking donald trump, when we saw all those dozen plus republicans try to attack donald trump throughout the course of the primary, every time they did it, they seemed smaller than donald trump. Attacking them seemed to make them seem smaller by comparison. One thing clinton did today that i hadnt seen from her yet was go after him in way that made her seem bigger than he was this some ways, at least for the audience in that room. From that perspective, i think it was successful. There was less emphasis on the back half of this piece. What stood out both in the room and i asiem ysume you saw it on and i saw it in person, what she was talking about her record there wasnt a vigorous defense of some of the pieces that will be problematic throughout this campaign whether its libya or the war in iraq. I think it was some of that contrasting but it was the attacks that stood out. Lets listen to a little more with her being in the room as president obama made the order to go in and take out bin laden. I remember being in the situation room with president obama debating the potential bin laden operation. The president s advisors were divided. The intelligence was compelling but far from definitive. The risks of failure were daunting. The stakes were significant for our battle against al qaeda and our relationship with pakistan. Most of all, the lives of those brave seals and helicopter pilots hung in the balance. It was a decision only a president could make, and when he did, it was as crisp and courageous a display of leadership as ive ever seen. Imagine, donald trump sitting in the situation room making life or death decisions on behalf of the united states. Imagine him deciding whether to send your spouses or children into battle. Imagine if he had not just his twitter account at his disposal when hes angry but americas entire arsenal. Do we want him making those calls . Someone thin skinned and quick to anger who lashes out at the smallest criticism . Do we want his finger anywhere near the button . No. We heard the audience there practically rehearsed. I dont know how they did so well but the audience helped her along and loved it. What other audiences outside the room, people receiving the message either live or report, who do you think she was trying to reach with this speech . A couple groups of people. Some of those Never Trump National security elites. You have been talking about david french, bill crystal. Not to say they will get on the Hillary Clinton train but the sense is theres people who are willing to listen to this message. Maybe Hillary Clinton is the experienced, steady Foreign Policy hand thats more familiar to republicans. I think security moms also, weve identified in previous elections. Sometimes suburban women have been late to break to her. That happened in the senate in 2000. This is one way they can try to win them over earlier. I also think that potentially there are some republican white men who they might be able to win over with this. I think they know thats probably not necessarily a group they will do well but maybe theres a few and this would be the kind of argument they would be susceptible too. She seemed extraordinarily confident and referred to donald trump throughout as donald. What do you make of that . You know, i was asking specifically about this. Its dismissive. Shes also said governor romney or senator mccain in other instances. Somebody told me privately that they think it was a deliberate decision to put this on an even playing field. Its something we didnt see republicans do much of in the primary. Thank you. I got to say to you real quick, barack obama yesterday, Hillary Clinton today. That looked like a formidable onetwo punch. Theyll have a lot of arguments to make. When we come back, 500 miles north of san diego to Silicon Valley, right after this. Important message for women and men ages 50 to 85. In advance of tuesdays california primary, we thought wed do a bit of catch up on Silicon Valley, not the hbo program. We mean the real Silicon Valley who that grown into a political force. This year something seems off. The tech hub around a San Francisco hasnt warmed up to any president ial candidate so far. To understand why this is happened, you night need a little quick History Lesson on silicons valley role in president ial cycles of recent past. Silicon valley front, center again. 1939, hewlettpackard start in the garage. 1990s, valley explode. Helps bill clinton. Clinton helps the valley. 2000, the valley is split. They like gore. They also like bush. I will hear the best scientific advice from leaders in your field. 2008, Silicon Valley helps obama. Obama helps Silicon Valley. A top lobbyist from google visited with the president 128 times since he took office. 2016 pumped about the finals. No so much about the race. Clinton had a hard time selling to that crowd. Among your friends in Silicon Valley, how many are Trump Supporters . None of them overtly. Except for this guy. Hes now backing donald trump. Others give up on earth entirely. The space expert said he wanted to send humans to mars by 2025. Huge moment was a for a first time they dont have a candidate. They dont like much about trump or clinton. Neither have a fingertip field to the issues that matter to Business Leaders in the valley. Silicon valley is the politics there are some libertarian elements. Theres some left of center. Theres some right of center. Theres not a lot of far left and not a lot of conventional far right. They love immigration. Hes picked fights with three of the biggest leaders in the valley. Then you have hill clinton. We talked about the absence of her economic message. They love bill clinton and the information super highway and the way he talked about the economy and they like barack obama. Theres not a will the of love for Hillary Clinton because shes attacked the economy and seemed like on the wrong side of uber. They are like wondering what to do. She does not have an authentic despite the focus of her email, she doesnt have an authentic connection to their product. Shes not someone who loves the things they do. Its a huge opening now. Shes been able to raise a ton of money without having the fingertip field. Thats part of why Silicon Valley has been courted. Now they both need them. They both need the image. They still are california. Theres still a huge avatar of the future. Neither one is running a future forward campaign. The best thing is to catch up with technology. Both these candidates, i dont know if they see the value in it let alone going to capture. Quite a change over the last couple of psycycles. Coming up, our colleague mike bender join us to talk about paul ryans oped piece and more. Latest data say . Our customer is a 21yearold female. Heavily into basketball. Wait. Data just changed. Were joined by the Washington Post chief correspondent. He joins us from the post room. Here in our studios we have dan bender. Dan, id like to start with you because youre the dean. Tell us what you think about Hillary Clintons broadside against donald trump on Foreign Policy today. John, shes had some bad days during this campaign and this was not one of them. She was warming to this task long before she got up there to give the speech. It was a very, very tough speech. Mocking in all sorts of ways. She was trying to not disqualify him but to get under his skin in every possible way. He will respond no doubt tonight in ways that only he can. She defined the day with that speech. Mike, when youre looking at this, you followed both sides of this campaign, what do you think, what does trump need to do in some sense. We talked about trump being more president ial. How does he meet this particular kind of challenge on Foreign Policy from her and rise to the bait without rising to the bait . Thats something hes been promising to do for months and cannot get out of this rut. Look at the last month of tru trumps campaign. Its one disaster after another. This News Conference the other day. The reports in the New York Times about his treatment of women. Colleagues getting audio of him pretending to be his own spokesman. One thing after another. Theres eight or nine instances of this. I think thats what we saw clinton trying to do. Trying to feed into that today and try to get under his skin. If past is prologue, shell be successful. What was the sense you got from them about she thinks things are going . Theyre excited about trump as a candidate and his ability to sell himself and market himself. Uneasy about the structure of the campaign. The general chaos within the campaign. Trump has been talking about raising a billion dollars. Theyre nowhere near that. Fred told me he doubts they can do half of that. Trump is not doing fund raisers every day. You saw jeb bush last year. Say what you want about jeb bush but every time he was sitting down for lunch, break or dinner he was raising six figures. Trump has only done a couple himself. You cant schedule him more than a week or two out because of the infrastructure of the campaign. They dont know which super pac to help. Theres a general sense of frustration there. Dan, trump obviously is created a lot of excitement by even the national polls. How much of the structural problems, like for instance, donors concerns can be cured by paul ryan saying hes endorsing trump in. I think ultimately thats of limited value, mark. For one as you have suggested earlier, this was inevitable and to be expected. It took a little longer than might have for reasons that roon y ryan is best able to explain. I think there are larger issues. Theres still any number of people who dont have the kind of responsibility that speaker ryan has as the most prominent elected official in the party to be a supporter of donald trump. Those hold outs still exist. The money is a concern, obviously. I think the structural issues inside the campaign are still a factor. Theres a will the of things that he has to worry about. He will take comfort in these polls and understandably so. I think that he cant be complacent. Its felt hes been off stride for the last several weeks given everything thats coming at him and perhaps uncustomarily so. In one way or another what we see from him over the next few weeks will be very telling because as we all know, this is a defining period in the campaign. What happens between now and the convention will be very, very important. Never trump, dead, as we suggested earlier in the show . Is there anything left . I think never trump has been dead for quite a long time. Going back do trying to prop up rubio in florida. Im not sure what sort of success they would have had any way. You look back at 2012. The closest state in that race was florida and it was decided by 1 . The third party candidate, gary johnson finished with less than half a percent in florida. The clintons plan to spend a will the of time out in california. Are they maybe building up the stakes too much or got to go for the win . I think the stakes have been built up by Everything Else around it. Sanders helped to raise the stakes by barn storming california for the last several weeks. They dont want to lose the state. They know it would be another dent in her candidacy. The stakes are there. She will try to come through with a victory. The great mike bender. Thank you for joining us. Always awesome to see you both. When we come back, our crash course this Trump University with new yorks attorney general right after this. Im alex trebek. Were escaping the hot pit of hell by bringing some rock and roll fury. The last time that rage against the machines played in los angeles, we out grew trump, sanders and clinton by a margin of three to one. The general electorate is ready for our message. Its a pretty strong hat. Its a strong hat. You guys have three big catalogs to draw from. You do a bunch of that stuff. Youve also done some original music. Vewe have a song of the time and for the time. Ill let the colyrisist to discuss. Were done with the vibe. Were standing up and were making our voices known. The partys over the twoparty system been over a long time ago. We have to come up with something that looks forward into the 21st century that makes sense to these new generations that have come into the voting marketplace. Do you see a meaningful difference between the democrat and the Republican Party . Not really. I never have. Trump, clinton, sanders. Why does this feel unprecedented . It is an unprecedented moment in history. I think both those campaigns have tapped into something very real. People right, left and center believe the system as it currently stands does not serve their needs. What theyre being offered up is a racist demagogue on the one hand and a great sort of dreamer on the other hand and in the middle is the lesser of three evils. None of those choices are good enough. Is that Hillary Clinton in the middle . Yeah. There needs to be an alter voice that stands unapologetically with the people. What are you doing in july . Theres a thing called the Republican National convention in july and that will a Perfect Place for us to cause a ruckus. You have a venue in cleveland . We have a venue and there may be venues that will be sort of spontaneous. Its hard to say. This is the kind of thing you dont broadcast to the local authorities prior to arrival. Youll be there. Well see you in cleveland. Well be rocking furiously in and around the rnc. Any chance to see you in philadelph philadelphia . Anythings possible. Were figuring it out. At tehe end of the four days if you have raged your most effectively, what will have happen happened . Timmy c. Will have gotten the nomination. My view is that progressive radical or revolutionary change comes from below and not from above. Even if you stake your hopes, sometimes that doesnt work out. If you take them on this xenophobic fear based racism, that wont work out either. It starts around kitchen tables. It starts in their classrooms. The songs travel the world. How would you like it to be looked at from the outside. Were on wavelength with the rest of the planet looking inward. Somethings got to be said and somethings got to be done. Joined now who a man who donald trump said is disliked by practically everybody. It could be a lot worse. It is the attorney general of new york. He joins us to talk about the civil lawsuit you have pending against trump u. Lets say this wasnt donald trump. How big a case of this in the scheme of things as your Office Brings . Weve brought case against different for profit universities before. This was part of a broader investigation. More than 5,000 people were ripped off for millions of dollars. Across the country or just in new york . Across the country. How many in new york. 6, 700 victims. It was run as new york university. It was never registered or certified. Didnt do any of the things you have to do to call yourself a university. We brought the suit back in august 2013, long before anyone thought he would be the republican nominee for president. Its nothing to do with politics. Its straight up fraud case. Made representations to these people they would teach them his personal secrets to get rich in real estate. He had nothing to do with writing the curriculum. The president of the university has testified to that under oath, so has he. Its a straightforward fraud case. Its now hes sgentered the political scene and he decided to take me and the judge in the parallel case, which is a class action in california starting on friday. We have entered the debate. Youre involved in the Clinton Campaign, correct . Youre on the new york leadership council. I endorsed her a long time ago. This is part of what trumps argument is this a purely political thing. He also gave money to you at one point . Yes. After i won the democratic primary in 2010, he gave me 12,5 12,500. All of this is politics. The fact its happening to him is hes become successful this politics. Do you have political motivations that you want to disclaim . We started this in 2012. We sued him in 2013. There was nothing going on then relating to him in politics. Its not credible this is a political case. This is a fraud case. There were thousands of victims. Were talking about people in 2008, 2009, 2010, in hard times bought this pitch. Weve seen many people buying his pitches lately. We have videos of him saying my hand picked experts will teach you my personal secrets. You can learn everything i learned in a lifetime in a weekend seminar. We know from the sworn testimony he gave and the president of the university gave that he never met the instructors. He didnt write the curriculum. People thought it was a university. The new York Education saying you have to stop calling yourselves a university. It was scam from beginning to end. Its fraud. We brought a lot of fraud cases of People Holding themselves out to be lawyers. This is what we do. What kind of evidence do you have, if any, thats not part of the Public Record yet . In our case, most of what we have got in our case is in the Public Record. Theres some stuff thats been sealed in the california class action. The judge recently, in that case, announced he was unsealing other portions of it. We have the playbooks that are the scripts. Its clearly instructions designs to get people to spend as much money on trumps seminars as possible. We have transcripts of the actual seminars themselves. Its nothing really secret. He says he doesnt want to settle and he wont. What would be a just kind of settlement in this case . He has to pay back the money from the people he ripped off and the fines assessed by the state of new york. You cant allow people to run around saying this is the halperin university, the halperin hospital. Hes going to have to pay the fines he owes new york state. On the face of it, from your point of view, it should have been shut down from the first day . It was. We have the record and this is all before the court. Again, the class action in california have been pending for years. A lot of arguments trump makes hes made to the courts and they have been rejected. He lost virtually everything in a set of motions decided in march of this year in our case. Hes made the arguments that we have records of him sending deceptive letters back to the new York State Department of education. Were moving to another state. Were changing the way we do business. At one point there was a physical forced entry into their offices because they claim they werent in new york. This is all before the court. Youve not deposed trump at this point . We have not and dont think we need to. We did depose the president of the university and other employees and students have been deposed and we can use the sworn testimony. Were ready to go to trial. Anything that might make you bring trump in . Were ready to proceed. Hes taking a last appeal to the highest court in new york. Once thats decided, were ready to go. Thank you. Thanks to the attorney general. Dont forget if youre watching us in washington, d. C. You can listen to us on bloomberg 99. 1 fm. Well be right back. Take on the unexpected with a car that could stop for you. Nissan safety shield technologies, available in the altima, sentra and maxima. Nba finals begin tonight. Its going to be great.
