The state Department Inspector general released a report on the worlds most famous private email system while serving as secretary of state. The scathing report confirms a lot of things that we already knew. Also she was not the only secretary of the state to do government business on a personal account. This tough report written by Barack Obamas government told us some new and important things. Some of her aids did not cooperate with the investigation. They had told it was reviewed and approved. There was no evidence it was reviewed or approved. The clinton camp said nothing to see here. Republicans, of course, were quick to jump on the news and condemn the democratic frontrunners judgment. Yes, those questioning her judgment include donald j. Trump, billionaire. As i say crooked hillary, crooked hillary. Shes as crooked as they come. For a year we heard this is not all that unusual what she did. This report makes clear it was unusual. Secondly, they made a big point of saying she always wants to cooperate with everyone. Thats always been her thing. Its an important talking point. Not only should she have done it for Good Governance but good politics too. Im a big fan of the First Amendment and that includes the right of speakers to speak. If this continues day in and day out, it will be part of the Clinton Campaign trying to paint him as a chaos candidate. I think it rallies his base. I think his conduct in those clips is not winning formula. Its trump being trump. He can be trump in some other way. It does rally his base. They will pay more attention to it than people who are voting on other issues. I think his base is already rallied and will be for a long time. I dont think that helps him again. What i keep thinking about, who are the persuadable voters. Who are the people on the fence and who will movable . Do they look at that donald trump . That mocking donald trump. That behavior mocking, bullying. You can think they are within their rights to protest, which i do. They are not allowed to disrupt. The bottom line is just that its inflaming it rather than trying to tamp it down. D hes said and done things outrageous. I think its probably not helpful. Im not obsessing about it. Images like this if they play out through the fall the images themselves . I think both. I think his reaction is not helpful for him and i think the images are bad. I dont love his reaction. Donald trump is working on another brand. Trump has been pretty successful so far at consolidating support inside the party. The latest news is key and reported first by our bloomberg colleague. The house speaker, paul ryan, is saying hes ready to end his stand off and endorse him as the partys nominee. He said he still hasnt made up his mind but a spokesman told Bloomberg Politics that the speaker will talk by phone. If ryan does endorse trump, how will that impact any cal cue g calculations romney has about getting in this race and going after trump. I dont know how seriously hes thinking about getting in this race. In any scenario it would be a race decided in the house of representatives. Not that he would get to 270 electoral votes and having paul ryan be speaker of the house and be on his side would make securing the presidency in that farfetched scenario would make it easier than having ryan be an official trump backer. I think the stop trump movements rest primarily on if mitt romney decides to do this. I think it becomes mump harder. Its already hard for people in the antitrump movement to say im this but a lot of people i like and respect are endorsing trump, et cetera. For romney to say this is a moral outrage, the notion that donald trump is our nominee and could be president when the guy he picks as a running mate endorses him. I think it would cut the legs out from romneys moral position that he wants to take into the race if he gets in. I think its completely right. Very difficult for romney in this instance. I cant help but wonder how lonely romney feels. He went out far on the limb and took a stance of real principle and some bravery and now he looks around and sees all of these people who he thought were including a lot of his big kn donors. They have not only flocked to trump but abandoned romney and now hes looking at the possibility that ryan may do the same. Very hard. All right. I think whether sanders i think it will bring it in the fold faster. Theres no doubt that Elizabeth Warren is a huge asset. I dont know it will help. I dont know that her presence will do anything to sanders head. It helps with clinton. In the end its still about what Bernie Sanders want and hes still more key to unify than she is. For all his flaws as a candidate, hes a better performer. Hes got greater capacity to drive the news cycle where he wants it to go than she does. That matters as much or more than anything else on the two sides. I think thats right. Hes far better at that. Not only that, hes sort of the new thing. Hes the new shiny object. Hillary, you cant really say that. Shes been around forever. Her family has been around forever. Were going to have you to lead us there what you would do if you were working for trump. You worked for the kasich super pac. He said a lot of things about trump not being the right guy for the party. He still hasnt endorsed him. A lot of republicans felt strongly that trump was the wrong guy to be the republican nominee and not someone with problems in the general election but really, deeply wrong. Youve made your peace with the idea of trump as nominee, right . Just explain your thinking how you came from being pretty strongly antitrump to being supportive of him. A couple of things. Number one, its a given. Hes going to be the nominee. I heard a bit of your show prior to think and i think you agree with me. Number two, he brought in this excitement and a whole group of new people into the party. Theres a lot of polls out there that say these arent really new people and some gentlemen that you guys work with have been promoting that theory. I think he has brought excitement and interest and newness to this race and now all he has to do is pick up the establishment. All these people the Republican Party has been trying to get, he got. He missed the solid regulars. He missed the john kasichs. Thats where the work comes. Theyre going to be easier to get than the add ons because nobody has been able to tuouch them. You call yourself a conservative, right . Right. By what measure do you think trump is a conservative . I have to say hes a republican. Thats all i can say. We have heard liberal things, moderate things and conservative things. Who knows what he really is. Thats what elections are about. I think people like you will push until we know what the real donald trump is like. Youve had a lot of clients, republican clients for statewide office and other offices. One gentleman that watches your show every day so hes probably watching now from naples, florida, he called me a few months ago to say he and his wife thought the Republican Party needed a major shake up and donald trump was the shake up that was needed. I talked to one republican who said Trumps Supreme Court list that he put out was enough for them. That was enough, exactly as planned by the Trump Campaign to say here is this list of people i put on the court and now is enough for this person to go from never trump to hes better than hillary. The better than hillary right now is the only hurdle you have to get over. Thats maybe not that difficult if youre a republican or even a moderate. Stand by. I was a year ahead of time. I said he had to not be donald trump. He couldnt be the apprentice guy. He couldnt brag. His couldnt use his helicopters and airplanes. That was probably the worst advice ive ever given anyone. I think the helicopter and the airplanes became icons in the primary race and did a Great Service for donald. I think right now he needs to get to what i was recommending a year ago, which is he can go on and use the plane and the helicopters and do his rallies that he does so well. He can still be a little bit outrageous in those. That has attracted a certain type of voter to the donald trump group and its a winning coalition. He needs to get me. He needs to get more establishment types back on board and to do that, number one, i think he needs to be president ial. You hear that a lot. Im not the only one that says it. Not maybe in his rallies, but i think Paul Manafort is doing a good job getting him more president ial in that direction. Then real quickly, he has to shift it to being more about me and more about you and more about every American Voter than it is about donald trump. Im tiring of hearing of how successful he is. If he continues in his rally to say how successful he is but his paid advertising makes him look president ial and talks about what his brain is going to do for me, is it going to help me pay my mortgage, help me make my car payment. More about me, less about trump. Finally, because people vote for people they like and both hillary and donald have a little upside down problem in their likeability. He needs to be humanized a bit. Ive never met him. Ive talked to some people who have had dinner with him and just his dinner conversation and some of those things hes pretty normal. The eating at mcdonalds. All that kind of stuff. You couldnt expect that unless you heard it from somebody who went and dined with lihim. I think theres a twofold approach. Keep doing what youre doing because its working in the rallies but let the rest of us see you have a serious president ial side. I want you to pretend that you just drank an entire bottle of bourbon and youre looking at me and you i have morphed into donald trump. Ive invited you in and said those are some interesting general ideas, im thinking about hiring you to be my ad guy. Make the pitch how you would execute that. Give me your pitch to mr. Trump about what you would specifically do. What kind of ads would you put on the air, what duration, when . I would start with a race defining film. Its not that hard to define Hillary Clinton and donald trump as two different people. The closest i could come out here in hollywood where this is used a lot is defining it based on something else. Mine would be morning in america for Ronald Reagan. He wasnt in the ads but people were. People that were just getting married, people that got their first home and putting their kids through college because Ronald Reagan had been president. I think that was past tense. This could be future tense. Theyre concerned as proven. He just needs to show how his successes help me and from everything i know about donald trump, thats a pitch that he probably would appreciate it. You would go with a long film released pretty soon and get up on the air with a bunch of 60s, 30s, what would it look like . I would start with the long film. I would make a 60 out of that and run it heavily on Broadcasting Cable and for the remainder of the campaign, you have to contrast with hillary somewhat. I dont think in donalds unusual case he has to do it as much as others do. I think the most important thing he can do is say im going to make your life better. It doesnt have to be whats wrong with hillary. The press does a pretty good job of talking about that. I think he needs to come off as president ial. Make hes not even in his ads. Maybe its just people talking about their hopes and dreams and how a donald trump can help fulfill it. I think people thought that about barack obama in 2008. Four years later, they were disappointed that their mortgage wasnt paid and they didnt have a new car and some of those things which was a problem for obama. I think donald trump, its possible, he could make people lives better and sure sell the story. Tell me something you think the Clinton Campaign is doing well now. Clinton campaign, you dont hear much about debates about strategy and tactics. Youre right. Shes also not going out of her way to offend any large segments of the american electorate. Things like where he went to new mexico and insulted the new mexico governor who happened to endorse marco rubio who is a fantastic governor of rising star and the Republican Party, things like that make me more weary of donald trump. Heres your chance. Win him over. Ive been in alexs claire before. I held my nose and voted for both of them. Come fall, i know hes going to vote for him. Youre suggesting the best argument to convince alex is to hold his nose and vote for him . No, no. Im saying he needs to take his time. Hell come to it. The reason theyre not supporting donald trump yet, i think thats a cause for concern from the Trump Campaign. I think they should be doing everything they can to unite the party. I want to be convinced he will govern as a limited government conservative. Hes not spelled out a lot of his agenda yet. I think the campaign is moving to a different phase. We have noted on the show that trump has done a shockingly good job, the speed at which the party has unified around him. In the middle of this project, why go to new mexico and assault the republican governor of that state. I dont think it was the intention to go there to do that.
