Climate is in crisis. Everybody thats made their living in this bay is doing a total different trade. Over four inches of rain completely washed our cows right out of the pasture. Climate change had become a divisive issue, affecting the food we eat and altering familiar traditions. Not just in one place, but every place. Climate change is becoming something we can taste. Since the early 1900s, wisconsin have gathered every week to fry upper ch, a local fish that once thrived in the waters of Lake Michigan. Oh, lovely. Lake perch. Those are smelt. Slaw, tartar caussauce, lemons. I have my own system. Tartar sauce with a little lemon juice and ketsup becomes my grandmothers russian dressing. Wow is that delicious. Perch are such a clean, fresh tasting fish. These are bread crumbed, which is the traditional fish fry methodology. Its a tradition being kept alive by hundreds of restaurants in the state today. Friday fish fries have such roots in milwaukee. I dont think it will ever leave. Yeah. Its just its who we are. One big thing is different, though. Yes. The fish. Yes. Right . Yes. So i notice, you know, there is all kinds of different fish in here in what used to be perch is no longer coming out of Lake Michigan. No. Yeah. Its coming out of the northern side, the canada side of lake eerie. The water here just doesnt support it. Yeah. Especially in the lower basin of Lake Michigan. Its hit it hard. When my parents were kids, they were going out for perch fries. When i was a kid, i went out for a cod fry. Since the 1990s, perch have been on the decline. Milwaukee fish fries now include imported perch, along for salmon and cod. Did you go to fish fries as a young girl . Yes. Every friday night. Cod, cod, cod, cod. Salmon, cod. Cod, salmon. So nobody here went for the traditional perch . Nope. On the menu. Nope. The biggest seller here is the cod. Which by the way, comes into the restaurant here at a little over 5 a pound. The perch phillies come in at about 15 a pound. Even those seeking to claim a little bit of nostalgic family comfort, well it comes at three times the price. All right. Carry on. Were looking for perch and the food they eat. This is a plankton net that we used to catch plankton and algae, which are the basic food web. The oranganisms are a mix of algae and plankton. Oh, my god its like a whole little world. It is like a universe. Newly spawned perch rely on this food to survive. 70 feet below the surface rests a ship wrecked ferry, a prime habitat for perch. So there is the live picture. Yeah. So we are on the topside. This latest 2010, we would see little schools of perch. Five years ago, we didnt see many perch or any perch really and now nothing is around. When did you ever see a video of a ship wreck that didnt have fish swimming all over it . You always see that. But were not seeing it. Plenty of food, but no fish. And thats because the earth is warming, and the spring fall on the lake is happening sooner than it used to. Its getting earlier and earlier. Its getting earlier in the year by about one day every year. Perch are very fixated on a day night cycle. And so the ones that have lived in Lake Michigan, they spawn at the same time. Perch are born at the same time each year on a lunar cycle. An earlier thau mew means it bl before the baby perch are born and are eaten by the adults. Thats why the perch are gone. It is the baby perch right after hatching. They cant get food, and its over. It has such broader impact than just not selling perch at the market. Right. It really is something which is changing the social fabric of our region. I did not grow up with this tradition. But when i eat fried fish, i think of the sauce that my grandmother served with it. I think of the sides that she put on her table. A jewish family in new york. Red cabbage potato pancakes. My point is, were all influenced by the food that we grew up in the communities that we were raised in. The loss of one regions fish fry tradition should worry you because it isnt just one region or one lake or one fish. A landmark 2019 United Nations report predicts the potential for vast marine dieoffs in the coming decades. Part of the plant and animal species on earth threatened with extension. It will affect the lives and livelihoods of millions. I have the fear that because of our Climate Crisis that all the things i love to eat are disappearing. This is what were dealing with. Wild oysters, which used to account for 90 of all of floridas oysters and 10 of all the oysters harvested in america have simply vanished. Hello. Hi. Come aboard. When you were younger and the oysters were plentiful, how many bags would you put in the boat . Actually, when we first started out, we didnt put them in bags. We just threw them in the hull of the boat and when you got home, you shovelled them into a wheelbarrow. My family, me, my dad and my little brother would catch a boat load. Now you are lucky to get a bag. Right. Im looking all around, and were the only boat out here. If you see another boat, theyre not oystering. Ill tell you that. You have a great sense of humor and you are making me laugh, but it is a heart breaker. It is. Its terrible. There was 27 processing plants up and down this beach. More processed right here than anywhere in florida. Ricky and shannon have taken me out to cat point. It used to be the most productive oyster bed in the bay. And were here a half hour to an hour. Well probably be lucky to catch a dozen legal oysters. From having two or three dozen in one. Right. And this is just hike a giant fork tweezer. I drive it. And this is going to be funny. Lets see if he can still do it. See, this is what were dealing with. This is just theres nothing. Right. Those are all dead. There is literally nothing here. Nothing. Same thing. The crabbing is good today, though. Once the ideal habitat for oysters, it was a perfect mix of salt water from the gulf and fresh water from the rivers. In 2007 we experienced our first major draught. In 2007, we had no fresh water. Due to that, the lack of fresh water, you have more predators. Means drilling konks, lots more drum. They drill through shells and eat the oysters inside. Drum are large fish that crush the little shells before ingesting them. Both predators have decimated the oyster supply here. The lack of rainwater that increases their numbers is a direct result of Climate Change. The rest of the country is flooding but were in a draught. Well, thats Climate Change. A biological scientist and Professor Emeritus with Florida State university. Hes been studying this bay since 1970. They did models that show that. This area would become dryer and wed have these big storms, a lot of rain and then no rain, which is the worst thing you can do to a river bay system, and thats what happened. If you look at the river gauges, normally it is around 15 to 17 feet on the gauge. It is at four and a half feet now. I love eating oysters, so im having lunch at lynns. This place used to shuck, can and sell oysters wholesale. We went from selling by the tractor trailer loads to five a dozen. I had 40 harvesters, and we worked just about round the clock. How long have you guys been in business here . Right. So 51 total . And my grandparents had a bait and tackle shop on the same property. With no wild oysters left to shuck, lynne turned her business into a seafood store and restaurant and started selling farm raised oysters. It really upset my mom because she felt like we were giving up. I said no, mom. Were not giving up. Were just going to have to do it different. Its buckling on your chin strap. Yeah. And trying to take care of your family. Yeah. Local officials insist the economy is strong, but times have changed for oyster men. I used to oyster, oyster and shrimp. Ive been on the bay since i was about nine years old. 800 boats, 300 left. Darren now works as a mechanic. I had to do something. I had to get off the waterfront. I miss it. I mean everybody that made their living in this bay now is doing total different trades. Ricky right here. I do alligator hunts, wild bore hunts. You are pivoting into whats left. Im a chameleon. I changed what i had to. A lot of people is moving out. Its hurt a lot of people. The picture that you paint is not a pretty one. Sad thing here is thats all people know to do. Its all they want to do. They have done it all their life. They raised their children to do it. Theyre raising their grandchildren to do it. And its just not there anymore. It is not something that i really wanted my kids to have to do, but i want them to have the advantage of being able to do it if they want to do it. The choice. Right. Because its a heritage. Its a lifestyle, you know. Same thing, nothing. And i feel absolutely nothing on the bottom but crushed shell. The bottom line essentially, its not going to get better. Its going to get worse. As it gets worse, the bay will stand less and less chance of ever coming back. At some point the bay will change to a point where even if the river started to flow again, it wouldnt come back. Every time. Every single place where the land meets the water, i hear the same thing. The fish are swimming somewhere else because of temperature. Our yields on our crops are lower. When you keep going on and on and on where entire industries are having to shut down or its becoming too expensive to do business. Why the hell arent we doing anything . That was my question for you. We as a nation do it better than anyone in the world. In 2017 President Trump appointed scott pruitt to run the department. As Oklahoma Attorney general, pruitt had sued the epa 13 time sdp. Do you believe co2 is the primary control nodule for climate . No. I think human activity on the climate is very challenging to measure. It was a takeover in my mind by people that had the interest of dismantling the epa, and they continue to do that. The way the Current Administration is handling Climate Change policy in many cases is contradicted by the actual science. We have all heard the number. 97 of climate scientists agree that Climate Change the happening and humans are the primary cause. Having worked with scientists to get a group of scientists to agree, that is a almost an impossible thing to do. The federal government isnt even willing to admit there is a problem. It makes no sense to me. It makes no sense. What bothers me is there are valid scientific questions that we need to put in research. No doubt. When we cant get past that stage, i would call it criminal. Administrator pruitt resigned in july 2018, but that hasnt stopped what environmentalists see as the Trump Administrations assault of environmental regulation. President trump got up and talked about the environmental great things theyre doing. One thing after another, [ bleep ], [ bleep ], [ bleep ]. My administration has made it a top priority to ensure that america is among the very cleanest air and cleanest water on the planet. Since taking office, the Trump Administration has rolled back or eliminated more than 95 rules that were protecting the environment, more than half of those directly impact the fight against Climate Change. To sell this to the public, the white house hired william hap n happer. Hes a distinguished physics professor at princeton. Smart physicist. Works at a great university. I dont think anybody disputes that. Hes got out of his lane a little bit. He joined the National Security council in 2018 to reexamine Climate Change. Our co2 is clearly a benefit for a plant. His name claims Carbon Dioxide is good for the earth. Were in a carbon deficit, which is ludicrous. What he does cite is agriculture. Hes right that in some cases the yields may go up. But there has to be water to make that happen. Thats, as you know, a huge issue on climate because of the changing patterns of prec precipitati precipitation. If there is not the water, all those great carbon fertilization will not help. So they keep using that one little piece of information to go, see, see. Williams princeton credentials gave the administration pro fossil fuels policies a boost in credibility in spite of statements like this. The demonization of Carbon Dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor jews under hitler. I think that people have grossly overestimated the ability of co2 itself to cause warming. He reported on the influence conservative organizations have on america. There is a lot of money thats going from, you know, say the Koch Donor Network to think tanks and they provide the academic legitimacy for the climate denialism, right. We have all heard of the koch brothers, but here in milwaukee, the brothers im interested in are the bradleys. They made a fortune in manufacturing in the mid1900s. In 1942, they founded the Bradley Foundation and began spreading that health awealth a town. Their foundations which is hundreds and hundreds of Million Dollars in size. Over 900 million. As you visit places like the museum and you go to many theaters, you will see the bradley name. And does a lot of good in the city of milwaukee. But they also donate to other organizations, some of which are climate designers. Most prominently William Happer and his group. Remember William Happer . We reached out to him several times, but he declined to talk to us. In september of 2019, he resigned from the National Security council and returned to the board of the co2 coalition. It is a group thats pushing an agenda. That agenda is there is no proof that co2 emissions are related to Climate Change. Uhhuh, uhhuh. The co2s coalitions messages isnt just aimed at you and me. In 2016 they released two videos aimed at children. What if there was something that could make plants grow bigger . And something that could make the whole world greener. Wow. Look at that co2. Co2 . Who knew. Co2 is amazing. It is essential. Thats quite a spin. Thats putting it mildly. He received 175,000 from the Bradley Foundation of milwaukee from 2016 through 2019. The co2 coalition isnt alone. According to an analysis of tax filings conducted by the corporate watchdog grop documented, the foundation gave 8 million to groups concerned with climate denial amongst other causes in 2018. The Bradley Foundation declined our repeated requests for an interview. They did send us this comment that highlighted the foundations, quote, fidelity to the constitution, end quote. What about it . I do know about the bradley center. I wonder if they knew one of their hometown foundations also funds the work of Climate Change designers . Really . I did not know that. Yeah. Back in florida, citizens and state officials alike have been extremely skeptical. The Republican Party in florida, which governs florida, decided that there is no such thing as Climate Change. Florida officials were reportedly instructed to stop using the term Climate Change in official communications during the administration of governor rick scott from 2011 to 2019. Scott now a United States senator has said he is not convinced Climate Change is caused by human activity. This come from mr. Trump right on down through the ranks. While Climate Change decimated the wild oyster population, many locals still dont believe it. Climate change i really dont think i think the i think its the oil spills. A lot of people said to me that one of the reasons is because of the bp oil spill. Oh, yes. The great oil spill lie. If you look at the maps of that oil spill and the distribution of where they think it might have gone, it didnt reach here. Others point to a fight over the flow of fresh water coming down from lakes near atlanta. Atlanta has been sucking up a lot of the water and they dont release the water they used to. Because theyre damming and utilizing all that water upstream. Were not getting as much of that water anymore. We did studies on the amount of water coming out from georgia. It was nothing compared to the stopping of the rain. Right. Scientists have done the work on Climate Change. And there is absolutely no doubt its happening. Its so weird that people would fall for the lies that are taking place when right in front of their very eyes in our own area, its happening to them. Down a little. You hear our politicians say that Climate Change isnt real. Yet the popularity amongst farmers for our president went up from 2017 to 2018. I think Rural America tends to lean more conservative. It is unfortunate that it is a political issue because its Public Health and an environmental issue. When it comes to Climate Change, seeing is believing. How long have you and your family been in this business . I live on a century farm. It was homesteaded in 1904. Wow. On the night of june 27th, 2019, it began to rain at bobs farm. Tell me about this horrific rain and your cows. We had over four inches of rain. Only four inches, but it fell in just a few hours without anywhere for the water to go, it roared through bobs farm. Completely washed our cows, 56 head, right out of the pasture. These are cows floating down the river. Poor cattle. The velocity of that water was so severe. Thats terrible big time. We found most of them downstream about six miles. Four cows and 13 calves were lost. Do you think your cows were victims of Climate Change . I say what happened is a result of Climate Change. Bobs cows are special. Among the 3 of cattle that are grass fed. Our goal is to have those cattle out in a Natural Environment rather than the feed lock. The vast majority of beef is finished in large feed lots on a diet of grain instead of gas. When cows eat grain, they release much more methane into the environment. What can we do about that as consumers . Well, for starters, we could eat less meet. Cheese or no cheese . These are beyond meat patties. I have never eaten one, and neither has bob. Im anxious to see what you think of this. Okay. Its very good. Uhhuh. But i can tell its not beef. Im a beef farmer. I know this was not a gotcha moment. And i feel the exact same way.
