Votes. The clock is ticking on capitol hill. The house is back in session tomorrow with just ten working days left this year, so the pressure is on to pass another Coronavirus Relief bill and government funding to avert a shutdown. As millions are returning home from the Holiday Weekend, dr. Deborah birx says she is very concerned. Were interesting this postthanksgiving surge with three, four and ten times as much disease across the country, and so thats what worries us the most. We saw what happened postmemorial day. Now we are deeply worried about what could happen postthanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, thats where thats why we are deeply concerned. We have a team of reporters and analysts following it all for us this hour. Were going to begin with msnbcs Cory Kauffman whos in lake forest, illinois. It is home to the nations busiest rest stop, which means you had a lot of people to keep your eyes on. How concerned are drivers about covid safety there . Reporter yeah, alex, its been about 5050 i would say. Driving, by the way, according to aaa, expected to all in all when the numbers come in be down only about 5 nationwide. It takes about 2 million drivers off the road from 50 million last year to 48 million. Actually i have to note the lanes out here are pretty all the lanes are taken up. About half the folks i spoke to said they did change their travel plans in one way or another. Even though they did choose to drive, they shortened their trip, ate outside, wore masks. But half the folks i spoke to said they didnt want to make any changes at all. One thing they did agree on and most travelers did agree on, they wanted road travel this time instead of air travel. Thats down 47 according to aaa. Due to the pandemic, people are getting nervous about getting on a plane, and so that is why people have been choosing to travel by car this thanksgiving holiday. We went shopping. We went out to dinner and just walked around the town and really there werent a lot of crowds. I felt there werent a lot of crowds so i felt safe everywhere i went. Reporter yeah, so a lot of the car travelers that i talked to, alex, felt more comfortable with the fact that not as many people were out and so they felt like they could be a little safer in that regard. The problem is when everybody goes home, whether its by error driving, only half the people surveyed expected to actually isolate or quarantine, and that has led states to either consider or to already enact new travel restrictions. The problem is trying to enforce that and trying to track all that, which doctors say well start to see the effects of in one to three weeks. Thank you very much, cori coffin from illinois. Lets go from there to the white house now where the president is sounding off certainly on his latest unsuccessful legal attempts. Carol lee is in washington for us. Carol, recall for us what he is saying. Well, alex, he gave an interview to fox news for about 45 minutes where he lauobbed a number of unsubstantiated allegations and vented his frustrations with his lack of traction in his effort to overturn the results of this election. He lashed out at everyone from the republican governor of georgia, who he endorsed and now says he regrets that, to judges who have ruled against his legal team in cases brought in various battleground states. Now hes saying that he wants to take this all the way to the Supreme Court. But even there, alex, the president conceding thats going to be a very difficult task. Take a listen. The problem is, its hard to get it to the Supreme Court. Ive got the best Supreme Court advocates, lawyers that want to argue the case if it gets there. But they said its very hard to get a case up there. We should be heard by the Supreme Court. Something has to be able to get up there. Otherwise, what is the Supreme Court . Now, those comments come after the president received yet another setback. This time in the Pennsylvania StateSupreme Court. Ill read you part of what a justice there wrote. He said it is not our role to lending legitimacy to such transparent and untimely efforts to subvert the will of pennsylvania voters. Courts should not decide elections when the will of the voters is clear. So pretty scathing and yet another scathing opinion from judges who have ruled on some of the president s legal efforts here. But the president saying in his fox news interview, alex, that hes not giving up and that even if all of this fails, all the states certify the election, the results are solidified for president elect joe biden to win as is widely expected, it would be news if that didnt happen, hes never going to believe it. Hes always going to believe what he believes right now. Whatever he has to tell himself. Thank you very much, carol lee, appreciate that. Also new today as president elect joe biden prepares to name new cabinet selections, new concerns over the damage the Trump Administration can still do before leaving office on january 20. Ali vitali is joining us from Rehoboth Beach in delaware. Ali, what are you hearing about this . Reporter well, those concerns exist but theyre happening against the backdrop of this Transition Team that is just barreling forward, trying to make their policy priorities known while also naming some new personnel choices. Were hearing now about new jockeying behind the scenes as all of these different allies and groups try to put forward their picks and preferences for these key cabinet positions in an administration thats going to need to prioritize the pandemic response. Few roles are as big as health and human services. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus urging them to use the new mexico governor for that key role. I want to read a little bit of what he said. They praised the recent nomination of department of Homeland SecurityAlejandro Mayorkas saying the first latino and first immigrant to be nominated for the position as secretary of Homeland Security reflects your commitment to these efforts. The letter goes on to say this is a good start in ensuring that latinos, the largest Minority Group in the united states, are more fairly represented in our nations government. This comes as the Congressional Hispanic Caucus wants to see latinos make up about 20 of bidens cabinet ultimately. Some other names that were hearing include congressman karen bass, who we heard a lot about over the summer as she was in contention to be bidens running mate at the time as well as other california congressman raul ruiz and a doctor who is trying to make sure theyre prepared for the rollout of a vaccine but other things that will mitigate the spread of this virus which is only getting worse. Alex, you mentioned the concern about what the Trump Administration could do while the biden team is preparing to transition into office. Listen to retired admiral mike mullen this morning on meet the press. Its pretty difficult to think that over the course of 50 or 60 days you can do something constructive. But you can do something thats really destructive. A week ago there were certain many media reports that there was a debate about action against iran specifically. The president reportedly turned down. But i would be concerned that those issues continue to be raised. Reporter so, alex, those concerns exist, but we also know that joe biden is going to be getting a fuller picture on the Foreign Policy front as well as the domestic front as he gets his first president ial Daily Briefing tomorrow. The same goes for Vice President elect kamala harris. Were also expecting in the early part of this week to see more cabinet picks, specifically related to those on the economy. Ali vitali following the biden transition. Thank you so much, ali. A new explosive Washington Post article shining the light on the white house in the weeks after joe biden became the president elect. It calls the time since the election 20 days of fantasy and failure for President Trump and features the perspective of 32 senior officials who are speaking out mostly anonymously. Joining me now is jeff mason, White House Correspondent for reuters and jonathan allen, coauthor of shattered, inside Hillary Clintons doomed campaign. Guys, its awfully good to see you both on the end of this Holiday Weekend here. Jonathan, ill go to you first. In this Washington Post article, the officials described some of trumps voter fraud theories as, quote, insane and one even compared him to king george. So what does all of this say about the current climate of the white house . I dont even think you have to go inside the white house to judge that what these conspiracy theories are, are insane. Just look at what the judges are writing back to the various lawyers that are making complaints essentially on behalf of trump, whether or not theyre actually trump lawyers. They continually repeatedly say that voters should be respected and that the legal system shouldnt be used as a toy to try to exact an election victory that didnt happen among the voters. Now, inside the white house all reports are i cant use the term that i want, but its a show inside the white house with the president clinging to this idea that hes somehow going to be vindicated. He lost this election. It was clear much earlier than when it was called that he had lost this election and it continues to be clear at every step. And i think that the fact that he has people around him, you know, basically telling him that hes not lost it here is troubling. Yeah, i got you. I know the iword you were workig on there. Jeff, you found yourself thursday in the president s crosshairs when you tried to ask him a question. Were going to play it. Everyone watch this. Dont talk to me that way. Youre just youre just a lightweight. Dont talk to me that im the president of the united states. Dont ever talk to the president that way. The president is incredibly wrong, you are not a lightweight. I dont have to tell you that, you know it. But tell us about this moment. Were you surprised that the president had such an emotional reaction . Well, thanks for saying that, alex. Its true. The question was if joe biden is if the Electoral College votes for joe biden on december 14th, as it almost certainly will, will he concede . And he gave sort of a longish answer saying it would be difficult to concede because of the massive fraud that hes alleging and then i followed up and i think its the followup that upset him. Yes, i was surprised. But its our job in these situations to brush it off and keep pressing for answers and thats what i was doing. Yeah, and you do so very graciously under pretty strenuous circumstances but let me ask you this because it is not the first time youve been targeted by donald trump, this president. Why do you think that is . Do you consistently hit a nerve . Is your reporting that excellent that you are getting under his skin . Is that it . I dont know the answer to that. Hes targeted a handful of people over the last four years. I do seem to be one of those. I dont have an answer for it. I think, again, its my job and all of our jobs to just keep pushing for answers. It was a really terrific group of reporters that day in the press pool. After he didnt answer my question, he went to a reporter who rephrased my question and asked if he would leave the white house if the Electoral College voted for biden, and that elicited the main news today. So its just become part of the job to deal with those tirades. I dont really have much more to say other than weve gotten used to it. Yeah. Listen, unfortunately weve lost jonathans camera at the moment. If we get it back, well bring him back to the conversation, but if not, its all about you, my frepiend, so lets talk abou the president s legal battle in pennsylvania as the states Supreme Court has officially rejected his case against the mailin ballots. Does that mean that hes exhausted all of his resources there . Is pennsylvania over . Well, i believe after that happened, jenna ellis, one of his attorneys, said on to the Supreme Court. You were talking about that a little bit earlier in the show. The legal team clearly still sees opportunities, be it specifically on pennsylvania or more broadly on the multiple states that they have been fighting or challenging the vote results from. But yes, it is certainly not a good result for President Trump and it confirms, as weve seen over and over again in these cases and, by the way, by republicanappointed, sometimes trumpappointed judges that this campaign has not provided the evidence that it alleges is true and is present of their allegations of voter fraud. So tomorrow, speaking of the Supreme Court, we know they were scheduled to take up trumps order to remove undocumented immigrants from the population count, the census. Whats the significance of this case . Well, it ties in with what you were saying earlier as well about the number of things that can still happen in the last couple of months of President Trumps term that would be that many people would see as detrimental. The census issue was a big fight earlier in the year, and because now Justice Amy Coney barrett is on the court, this could portend a decision with regard to that census and with regard to undocumented immigrants that would be something that this white house would like to see. Listen, you mentioned amy coney barrett. Shes joined the bench. We saw the early signs that the more conservative judges are all going to stick together to make final decisions potentially. What kind of effect this could have on biden and his plans . Vice President Biden, now president elect biden has made clear that immigration is going to be one of his top priorities, saying from the getgo that he wants to have an immigration bill to congress within the first 100 days, i believe. So thats huge. How this particular ruling will affect him and his policies is hard for me to say but i can almost guarantee you that theyre going to come out against it, the incoming administration, if thats the direction it depose. Okay, jeff mason, our big thanks to you and also to jonathan allen. Thank you, have a good weekend. Covid vaccines could be out in weeks. If you already had the virus, what would the vaccine do for you . What would the vaccine do for you . vo when subaru shares the love, good things happen. Over sixtyfour thousand pets supported. Over twentyfive hundred wishes granted. Over two million meals provided. Over four hundred National Parks protected. In fact, subaru and our retailers will have proudly donated over two hundred Million Dollars to national and Hometown Charities through the subaru share the love event. vo get 0 for 63 months and subaru will donate 250 dollars to charity. Americans are still waiting for the fda to approve a coronavirus vaccine, but tuesday a cdc Covid Advisory Committee will meet to determine which groups should be given the first doses. The cdc will then issue those recommendations to states. Joining me now is dr. Ashish jha, professor at the Harvard School of health. Welcome, dr. Jha, good to see you, sir. Lets get to the cdc which is expected to designate Health Care Providers and those living in longterm care facilities like Nursing Homes to be the first to get the vaccination, right . So how soon will we realistically see those being administered and what groups come next in your minding . Alex, thank you for having me on. So thats right. So health care workers, First Responders and really highrisk people such as those living in Nursing Homes, et cetera, should be in that first group. We can imagine adding other elderly people, other highrisk people and essential workers next. The timeline here is were going to start getting the first group vaccinated in december and january. Then just depending on when more vaccines become available, the second and next groups all come to mind. Okay. So with millions of americans having already contracted this virus and they have recovered, many of them, should those people also be getting a vaccine . If so, where should they fall in line . This is a fabulous question. We dont really know. We havent really studied vaccines in people who have been previously infected. My sense is those people will need to get vaccinated as well because Natural Immunity doesnt last forever. But in terms of timing, i think were going to wait for the cdcs recommendations on this. My guess is whenever its peoples turns, they should probably go ahead and get vaccinated, even if they think they have been infected in the past. What about fast forward to this time next year. Are we still going to be Wearing Masks . Will we be practicing social distancing . At what point do you think those protocols stop or ease up, or should they . I think no doubt they will ease up. Things will be better by next fall. Even by late Spring Summer youll see some set of things really easing up. It depends a lot on what proportion end up getting immunized. If its 70 , 80 , that will make a huge difference and life will become to come much more towards normal. We may still in large crowds wear masks but for daytoday stuff well do much less than that. If a lower proportion of people get vaccinated, unfortunately well be stuck with a lot of these measures much longer. So perfect scenario, 70 or 80 folks to be vaccinated, how long do you think it would take to get there and how concerned are you about those who have trepidation when it comes to vaccinations, be they antivaxxers or those with a history of taking them . I completely understand people who have some amount of hesitation because this is a new vaccine. The scientific integrity with which this vaccine is developed is very high and has been done very well. My sense is when the data is out and people see the data and they see large numbers of people getting vaccinated, i think most americans will end up wanting to protect themself and their families. As long as we get to 70 , 80 , which i think is possible by july, it can end up making a huge difference in terms of bringing this pandemic under control. All the travel for thanksgiving, how concerned are you that two weeks from now, you and i may be talking about some pretty staggering numbers of covid cases . Yeah, you know, alex, i am worried. Obviously a lot of americans heeded warnings and stayed home, but a certain proportion didnt. And for those folks, the key is when you come back home to really try to limit your contacts for a while, get tested a few days down the road if you can. But i think being extra careful right now is going to be critical. Boy, we have a big surge happening across the country with hospitals pretty full. Adding more will strain the system. Such sage advice, i much appreciate that and youre welcome any time on the broadcast. Thank you so much. Thank you. This week marks six months since the death of George Perry Floyd jr. Born in north carolina, he spent most of his life in houston, texas. He died on the streets of minnesota, his neck pinned under the knee of a Minneapolis Police officer. The video of floyd pleading for his life for more than eight minutes shocked the world, under lockdown by the covid19 pandemic and sent tens of thousands into the streets in protest. Joining me now, black lives matter activist, former member of president obamas 21st Century Policing task force and an msnbc contributor. Brittany, its very good to have you paback on the show despite this unhappy milestone. More so for floyds family having to relive these final moments on an anniversary level. When you think back on this flash point and how it possibly changed the world, what comes to mind . I think weve been seeing a steady build over the last six or seven years of what these flash points havemen meant. When we saw Trayvon Martin be killed and mike brown jr. Be killed and the ferguson uprising come out of that, all over the world people started to wake up and this is exactly what happened with the murder of george floyd. I want to be very clear that it should never have to take someone losing their life for people to wake up to injustice but thats what we saw this summer. Brand new people, brands and organizations that we never expected to join us in the streets finally did. What that turned into were folks who were ready to be organized to deliver on critical Ballot Initiatives and electoral victories all across the country. The democrats owe so many victories to the very same people who came out and poured into the streets this summer on behalf of george floyd, breonna taylor, tony mcdade and so many more. People are waking up to injustice and the role that they can play in correcting it not just on one day but every day. I really truly hope to see that the Biden Harris White house continues to extend and open doors to those very folks, not only because they in part owe their victory to us, but because weve got important things to say about how to move the country forward. How strong is the tide that you feel and see turning . Is it something that can make a full 180degree turn any time soon . Try to put that into perspective for me, your expectations on that. Well, i like to remind people that this is the latest chapter in a long, generational protracted freedom struggle in this country. Ever since my ancestors were brought to these shores, we have been struggling for our freedom alongside our indigenous family who have been struggling to make sure they can maintain the sovereignty in their own land that they deserve. These struggles happen over generations and we never see instantaneous change, but we do see in these moments of awakening and engagement and energy, we do see shifts that can begin to build on a larger scale. Weve seen changes in st. Louis like closing the work house, a medium security jail in downtown st. Louis. We know that just this week seattle has reduced their Police Budget by 20 . We know that cities like minneapolis are trying to reimagine what Public Safety looks like. We know that the university of minnesota has decoupled their partnership with the Minneapolis Police department. So there have been changes that we have seen that have occurred because of the pressure that weve seen be mounted on the streets and in policy making spaces. What that means is that we have to remember the work is long term and we have to see this thing all the way through. Brittany, when you Say Something like seattle has reduced its Police Budget, you say by 20 . There are people who are going to hear that and freak out, thinking that its that were devolving into a lawless society. But explain why that is good. Is it because money is being reaproportioned, put places where Mental Health services, other things that police have been having to do that they may not have to do, they may not have been trained to do properly . Thats exactly right. We are talking about moving the money into the places where it best protects the people. Thats it. Its our money to begin with and we want to make sure that our tax dollars are actually going into the places that keep our communities safe, protected, healthy and well. That means investing in Mental Health services, that means investing in quality and fair housing, that means divesting from states that harm people and investing in livable wages, addressing poverty and homelessness. These are the kinds of things that we can do that over the long term actually reduce crime, reduce the carceral state and reduce peoples feeling of a lack of safety. Because weve made communities safe from the ground up instead of overpolice them from the top down. So we are not talking like trump would like you to believe and the folks associated with him would like you to believe, were not talking about a phone ringing in an empty room where theres nobody there to pick it up. We are talking about making sure that the person on the other end of that line is actually trained to keep you well instead of being trained to harm you. Brittany, i love our conversations and the passion that you bring to them. Thank you. Come see me again soon. Thank you, i will. The president proving that he may just be his worst enemy when it comes to the runoff elections in georgia. My conversation with James Carville is next. Conversation s carville is next but we didnt stop there. We made a cloud flexible enough to adapt to any size business. No matter what it does, or how it changes. And we kept going. So you only pay for what you use. Because at dell technologies, we stop. At nothing. New reporting today suggests the president s rhetoric around voter fraud may actually hurt republicans in georgias Critical Senate runoff races. Yesterday in an event with Ronna Mcdaniel quickly turned into an anxious q a writing in one sharp exchange, a trump backer quizzed mcdaniel on why georgia voters should bother to invest more money and work when its already decided. Its not decided. This is the key, its not decided, thats what she told the crowd of dozens. Joining me now, James Carville, Campaign Manager to bill clintons 1992 campaign, nbc news political analyst and cohost of the podcast politics war room. Welcome back to the broadcast. With donald trump also urging his supporters to not boycott the runoff elections, even though hes doubling down on the false claims the election was rigged, do you think by spreading these baseless voter fraud claims hes hurting his own party . I think we also need some clarification here. First, senator leoffler and senator perdue, where do they stand on this . If youre asking republicans to go vote, somebody is telling them votes are not calculated. I saw President Trump on fox, with maria the money person. They were saying throughout pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, georgia, arizona and nevada, trump would have won. So apparently theyre making the case to the Supreme Court to throw out votes in these six swing states. So i think senator loeffler and senator perdue need to clarify what their position is particularly as it refers to the go governor, the secretary of state and whether or not georgias votes should be cast out as President Trump is advocating on television. How much do you think they will do that . We have the president who intends to campaign in georgia this week, i think its next saturday hell be down there. First of all, how much influence does he really have either with those two senators or with the general population in georgia . Well, i dont know. He can say does he think its a fair state . But i think President Trump is not on the ballot. He is a beaten man, and he keeps getting beaten worse. He paid 3 million to get beaten worse in wisconsin. So hes really they are the relevant people. They are the people on the ballot. They should be asked about their governor. They should be asked about their secretary of state. They should be asked if they want their votes to be thrown out in the Supreme Court as apparently President Trump is advocating. These are hard questions for senator loeffler and senator perdue. They need to be asked. Hopefully reverend warnock will ask it. The democrats are united. I hope we unite around them, 15 minimum wage, expanding Health Insurance to people and getting ahold of prescription drugs. I think theres a winning message that every person f georgia can coalesce around. But the questions are coming fast and furious for the two georgia senators that are on the ballot. They havent been beaten yet as trump has. Trump is beaten, hes a loser. Well, perhaps those two democratically Challenging Senate candidates will ask that question, that or reporters of them. That said, when you look at georgia, you know its a traditionally red state. Joe biden filmed it blue. Its the First Time Since you and candidate bill clinton did it back in 1992. So this time what do democrats need to do in georgia before january 5th to guarantee double senate wins . First of all, we know the firsttime voters, there were a lot of them. And the chronic voters are probably going to come out. And i think youre going to see the campaigns and hopefully the democrats really focus on working that part of the vote. But i think the way to win this is to have a larger macro message and talk about the minimum wage, talk about these Economic Issues that the democrats you know, the minimum wage passed with 60 of the vote. 60 for 15 minimum wage. Georgia rural hospitals are getting clobbered without the expansion of medicaid. They have to figure a way to expand that, where the congress can help them do that. If we talk about those kind of relevant issues, i think were going to do very well and get a lot of these surge voters to stay in the process and maybe well bring a couple more along the way. You never know, you dont know until you try. Let me get your reaction to this new daily beast reporting that says trump is gaming out a 2024 rematch and even eyeing an event on joe bidens Inauguration Day to sort of kickstart that. I guess just put the attention on himself in as positive a way as he can. What do you think . Well, first of all, hes got 46 in 2016 and hes going to get probably 46. 7 in 2020. If he wants to lose again, go out and run, man. Do it again. Just like you keep recounting votes and keep getting beat. If you want to get beat in 2024, the country is not going to go back to you. The country is moving on. I hope that president elect biden can move the country along, because people are looking for a different direction here. Im talking about over 6 million more voters voted for President Biden instead of President Trump. So i hope biden turns the corner and we start turning the corner in georgia and start being about things we can do to improve peoples lives and asking them about whats your position . I think the democrats would be united. If miss abrams wants to run for governor in 2022, i think the party would be more than happy to get behind her. Before i say thank you and farewell to you, you called it. You were on the broadcast the weekend before the election with Doris Kearns Goodwin and you called the Electoral College count. When it first was solidified, despite all these Trump Campaign lawsuits and the like, i was like, dang, that guy called it. You were spot on. So i just wanted to say props to you. That was very good. Even a Blind Squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. Thank you for letting me hunt for the acorn. Okay, James Carville, talk to you later. Go to autismspeaks. Org. Happening right now, Labor Union Workers have joined forces with nursing home employees on the picket line in chicago. Theyre all calling for an increase in wages and hazard pay as covid cases rise in the city and in fact across the state of illinois. Lets bring in Valerie Castro on chicagos south side once again. Valerie, with a welcome to you, last hour you said things would be getting hot right about now. We were just looking at some live pictures there. I know overall the strike has been ongoing to six full days. Any signs yet that both sides are anywhere close to an agreement . Reporter alex, yeah, a rally is set to start in 20 minutes where other labor unions will be here to show solidarity. Theres been no word of any sort of agreement yet. About 700 workers are on strike. They went on strike about a week ago monday. They work for Infiniti HealthCare Management. That is a company that owns 11 different facilities across the state of illinois and they are protesting, asking for better starting wages, asking for better protections in the form of ppe and hazard pay. Covid has been a real problem in these longterm care facilities here in illinois. About 45,000 cases of covid and 6,000 deaths. Thats according to the state health department. And illinois overall has a total of about 12,000 deaths, so these longterm care facility deaths make up half of that. Workers are protesting at all of the locations and also held a rally yesterday in Federal Plaza in Downtown Chicago asking for their demands. They want a 15 starting wage and their Union Representative was there to talk more about those demands. Take a listen to what he had to say. We need to make sure that we are being taken care of in that we want our owners to protect us and give us guarantees at work, give us proper ppe. Workers should not have to wear masks for a week. Give us the pay that we deserve. This is not a minimal wage job. We shouldnt be giving workers wages that we know next year when the minimum wage goes up is going to make them minimum wage workers. Reporter and that is a representative from seiu, the Union Representing these workers. They also point out Infiniti HealthCare Management received more than 12 million from the federal c. A. R. E. S. Act earlier this year. They say where is that money . They want to know where its gone and why it hasnt gone to compensate them and pay them hazard pay. In about 20 minutes, the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Federation of labor is expected to be here to show their solidarity for these workers of the we have reached out to management several times but have not heard back. Thank you very much from chicagos south side there. The busiest shopping season of the year will be scaled back dramatically in california. New restrictions on shopping go into effect tomorrow. Santa clara announced some of the strictest new rules in the bay area for businesses. Lets go to scott cohn standing by for us. Give us an example of what these restrictions will look like, scott. Reporter alex, theyre not as draconian as the restrictions we saw they beginning of all of this. Remember, Santa Clara County was among the first to be dealing with the virus and the restrictions that followed. And now were looking at some of the worst case levels of the pandemic, even worse than they were back in the spring. The county Health Officer saying she is gravely concerned. Heres basically what theyre looking at. Theres no stayathome order this time. Rather, there is a suggestion that people quarantine if they travel outside of the region. Any nonessential travel is strongly discouraged. And then there are the new restrictions on capacity for businesses. So we are looking at, you know, 10 of capacity for indoor retail. That goes up to 25 for supermarkets and pharmacies, but the business operators are expected to monitor that closely. Its yet another challenge for Business Owners in a year that has been full of them. Ive been in business for 13 years. Ive poured my heart and soul into this business. To see it it almost felt like the rug was pulled out from under me. It wasnt a mistake i made or something i did, bad decision or just, you know, anything i could have controlled. So it was a tough one to have to adapt to the fear of losing the thing that at the time was one of the most important things to me. Reporter she was of ibiss boutique, said she had to adapt fast. She moved a great deal of her Business Online where she had no online selling channel before. This was a boutique that was focused on selling dresses and things for events. They had to quickly switch to loungewear. She said business is off sharply for this year, but the first days of the Holiday Shopping season, black friday and yesterday, were roughly in line with last year so shes hoping she can hang on. Alex, every day, every new development in this pandemic is a new challenge shes never faced before. Somewhere along the way, it became okay just to kind of walk over bodies to get to where youre going. How disastrous does it have to become before we bring out the better angel . I think its the glue that holds us together. I think its just really important, because without kindness, we would all be maniacs. Wisdom from the mouths of babes there in a new movie entitled the anecdote, a film that weaves together decency and the power of community in america. Joining me now is sixtime award winner and director of the anecdote. Gosh, im so glad you made this film, but tell me what motivated you to do it. Thank you. When i first met my cofilmmaker, john hoffman, he had raised some money and he had one word kindness. This was back in 2018 at a time where i felt really concerned. I felt this pervasive feeling of si vifl crumbli civility crumbling beneath me and i didnt recognize it as this place where i lived. So i thought the opportunity to make this film and explore this aspect of being human that i do believe the vast majority of people share would be a really interesting opportunity. So john and i, you know, set forth and started to try to figure out how to paint this very blank canvas. Im so glad you did. I always say to people, i think were more alike than we are different, right . Lets take another look at some of the voices you chose to highlight. Im a hard worker. I want to be a good mom. The globe is most unkind when we determine that someones life hold more valley than another persons. Its the start of unkindness. In america, where will people still be sleeping on the street . The first piece of capital that we all need as humans is trust. I want to make a change, and i want our generation to be an aspect of that change. You got a lot of stories, a lot of diversity in the people with whom you spoke. How hard was it to find the people you profiled . And when you said, hey, i just want to talk about kindness, what was their reaction . Thats a great question. So it was very overwhelming to figure out how we were going to do this, and we really decided early on that we probably couldnt just tell it with one story, and that it might be more powerful to have a chorus of voices representative of all the people who, you know, live in this country. So after Much Research and conversations and a lot of thinking, we came up with six essential questions that we really hoped our film could answer by the end of it in one way or another, and those were, how do we raise our children, how do we teach our children, how do we live and work together, how do we treat the sick and the dying, how do we welcome a stranger and how do we lead . We felt if we found stories that helped answer these questions that represent what we really believe is kind of the breadth of the Human Experience over a lifetime that it would help us narrow down what we were looking for. But i just want to add that we also realized that it wasnt enough just to ask those questions. Charlottesville happened, and that was a real moment of reckoning for many people in this country, and it made us realize that we needed to really make sure that whatever stories we picked that they also identified what we called the fundamental unkindnesses. So we identified those as well. Its fundamentally unkind not to have a safe place to sleep. Its you understand mentally unkind not to have access to health care. Its fundamentally unkind not to earn a living wage, racism, sexism are fundamentally unkind, and we took those fundamental unkindnesses and we sort of matched those with our questions, and those together became the lens through which we found these stories. And the people we reached out to, i have to say, you know, you get an email from a total stranger just saying, hey, were making a film about kindness, and, you know, no one said yes to the email itself, but almost everybody was interested in having a conversation. So thats where the trust started to build to arrive at the stories we did. So let me ask you real quick, and that is with regard to right now where we are in our society. You look at the reality of the news, of social media on a daily basis, and it can make this film feel like it doesnt reflect america. Did you find a real america here . Is it still there . Is it buried underneath the nastiness thats on the surface . I have to say it was not that hard to find this. It really is everywhere, and in the film, we dont identify names and organizations, we instead sort of use drone shots to fly over the country and we drop into locations. Cleveland, ohio or indianapolis or amarillo, texas, anchorage, alaska, atlanta, georgia, all over. Theres one of the drone shots. The idea is that, really, you could drop in anywhere to any city, to any town, to any small town and find this kind of thing already happening. So i do believe its out there. Im glad to hear that, and i think people could drop in on amaz amazon. Its streaming right now. Its called the antidote. I think well all be better for watching it. We have a couple great documentaries right now, and im glad to bring them to our viewers. Thats it for me this hour. Im alex witt. Thank you so much for watching. Ill see you next week.
