Good day, everyone, from msnbc headquarters in new york. Im alex witt. Were bringing you up to date. As we begin with breaking news any minute now, were expecting to see joe biden on the campaign trail. He is expected to speak in the battleground state of North Carolina, and as we keep our eye on that event which is gearing up right there, were also watching two new battleground polls. Tracking the president in arizona, biden with 50 support, trump with 47 . The margin falls within those numbers. Wisconsin voters say they will choose biden over trump 51 to 46 . The president also on the campaign trail today. Hell be in carson city, nevada and newport beach, california. Tomorrow he heads to arizona. Tuesday pennsylvania, wednesday North Carolina. By the way, his 16th visit there this election cycle. And earlier today, rhetoric from the Trump Campaign heated up on the sunday talk shows. I think what we see on stage with joe biden, jake, is very clearly a cognitive decline. Thats what im referring to. It makes me uncomfortable to watch somebody on stage search for questions and try and figure out an answer. A cognitive decline youre trying to tell me that what im suggesting is stuttering. I think youre mocking his stuttering. I think you have no standing to diagnose somebodys cognitive decline. Okay. Joe biden is already in North Carolina, and we expect him to speak at that voter motivation drive any moment now. Were going to nbcs allie vitale. Do you have any idea when it will officially begin . Reporter im suspecting voters will see a lot more of donald trump, joe biden, Kamala Harris and mike pence in the next few weeks because their vote is critical to the calculus. Thats why you mention donald trump is making his 16th visit to this state next week, joe biden doing a battle of states across the country. He is doing what is expected of politics at this time in the race, which is mobilize voters, get their vote. Just before i got on the air with you, i checked the secretary of states website, and in between mailin ballots and people showing up early to vote, more than 1. 4 million ballots have been cast, so clearly an initial energy, anyway, around getting their votes in before election day. But there is still a lot to happen between now and election day. The Biden Campaign making sure their message is out there. Here in North Carolina, theyre blanketing the airwaves, outspending the Trump Campaign here nearly double on television ads. But across the country, were heading into a week where surrogates will be out in force. We already saw people like Elizabeth Warren out west this weekend, carrie washington, the actress who was here in North Carolina just yesterday, and heading into next week, you have one of the biggest democratic names getting out on the campaign trail for biden, former president barack obama. Hes going to be campaigning in another critical battleground state of pennsylvania. For the Biden Campaign at this point, what theyve had is a pretty stable race. There have been a lot of really chaotic news cycles and new moments, but if you look at the polls, nationally especially, the race has been pretty stable. For their campaign manager, though, jenni malley dillon, she is telling them to expect this race to be tighter than what they see on twitter, and they need to campaign as if theyre trailing. Democrats trying to stave off that complacency and make sure they get all their voters to the polls. Im not paying any attention to national polls, either. It all comes down to the states and we dont want any level of complacency from anyone. Ally, give us a heads up when joe biden takes the podium there. And new today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer says it started when the president went after Hillary Clinton in her state, having the audience chant lock her up to talking about kidnapping her. Its incredibly disturbing that the president of the united states, ten days after a plot to kidnap, put me on trial and execute me. Ten days after that was uncovered, the president is at it again, and inspiring and incentivizing and inciting this kind of domestic terrorism. It is wrong. Its got to end. It is dangerous, not just for me and my family but for Public Servants everywhere. Nbcs carol lee is joining us fr with carrie washington on this. Carol, you have the rhetoric beginning again. What are they saying about it . Reporter the republicans are out dismissing this notion that the president was somehow inciting violence or putting Governor Whitmer at risk with his rhetoric, and this idea that there are individuals in her state of michigan who are upset about or frustrated with restrictions in the state because of the coronavirus pandemic. Trump on cnn this morning essentially saying when it comes to those lock her up chants, that was the president just having a little fun at his ra y rally. Take a listen. He wasnt doing anything, i dont think, to provoke people to threaten this woman at all. He was having fun at a trump rally, and quite frankly, there are bigger issues than this right now for everyday americans. People want to get the country reopened, they want to get back to work. Reporter so you heard other trump allies echoing the Republican NationalCommittee Chairwoman rona mcdaniel, saying, hey, we get threats, too, and they attack us. The president this morning is in nevada and he is attending the International Church of las vegas before he heads to california where hell try to raise some funds for his campaign. As you know, the campaign is trailing joe biden in terms of how much cash on hand it has. Its down by 100 million, so the president in california to pick up some campaign cash, then he heads back to nevada where hell have a rally later today. Okay, carol lee there, not too far from the white house. Thank you, carol. Joining me now, congressman rokana. Good to see you again, congressman. We hope to get this completed before joe biden takes the podium there, but after stretching on for months, House Speaker nancy pelosi put a 48hour deadline on negotiations with the white house over another Coronavirus Relief bill. Lets all take a listen to what she said about that earlier today. If you dont get that agreement in the 48hour deadline, you said what happens . The 48 only relates to if we want to get it done before the election, which we do. But were saying to them, we have to freeze the design on some of these things. Are we going with it or not . Okay. Are you optimistic that this can get done before the election . Im hopeful. I think the speaker did exactly the right thing by giving it a 48hour deadline so we get something concrete. Some of the requests are very reasonable. We need a National Testing strategy. We need to fully fund National Testing and contact tracing, and i hope the white house will be as serious. If they come back with the language, we can get this done. You tweeted this yesterday, millions of americans have been waiting for months on a relief bill. We cant wait one more day. This is not the time to stall on a relief package. So this is one of many tweets you posted that really stresses how people in need just cant wait. This is a question of humanity, perhaps, over politics in your mind, but how do you convey that to both your democratic colleagues as well as your republican colleagues . I mean, are both sides ignoring that point . Alex, i genuinely think most members, the democratic members, understand that. Were hearing from constituents who are in food banks, lines of food banks are twice as long. Were hearing from people who are losing their house because they cant afford their mortgage, theyve tapped into their entire 401 k . We hear from others who literally cant put food on their table for their kids. The challenge is we need mcconnell to move and we need trump to come to a deal. Trump has a different message every day. I know in our caucus, we want to get something done. So as Senate Republicans, sir, prepare to hold a vote on their own half a billion dollar rather, half a trillion dollar relief bill this week, the president is pressed as to whether he can get them on board with what the house is negotiating. Lets take a look at that. I think even if we gave her the money for the poorly run democratic states, i dont think she would approve it, anyway. But arent you getting pushback from Senate Republican leaders . I will take care of that problem in two minutes. So you think we can have a deal . If i had something that would be good, i think i can quickly convince the republicans to do it. Theyre ready to do it. But nancy pelosi does not want to do it. Congressman ro khanna, do you buy that . If President Trump wanted to do that, wouldnt a deal be imminent . Absolutely. He could call mcconnell right now and say, agree to whatever pelosi agrees to. If he would do that, it would greatly increase the chances of a deal. The second thing is he hasnt given the state and local funding we asked for. The speaker has been asking for 430 billion. They first were at zero, now theyve come up to 300 billion. Just come up to 430 billion, make the deal. The president is deflecting blame when the white house has been unwilling to do the deal and unwilling to get mcconnell to do the deal. Yeah. I have to tell you, i was home in l. A. This week, and this one issue, a pretty contentious one popped up and really caught my eye. The voting issue in the state of california where state officials are now backing off legal threats against the state gop over its use of unauthorized ballot drop boxes. We had dozens of them found in at least four counties and some were located in places like gun shops and churches. Whats your reaction to this story . Its just shock and disappointment that we have politicized elections in this country. You have the gop in places where they dont want people to vote, actually making it hard to have dropoff boxes, hard to open up polling places, but then you have them having unauthorized ballot boxes in places where they shouldnt be. Cant we all agree as americans that we should allow the State Government to do this and the State Government can make it as easy as possible for people to vote. I think thats at the hallmark of our democracy. All right, congressman r ro khanna, thank you for keeping things all well in california, we appreciate you. It is the one indicator that President Trump may be using to boast about how his campaign is doing, and its not a poll, its Something Else. Were going to explain. Your medication has changed, we want to help. With just 16 days until the election, a new poll has former Vice President joe biden leading President Trump in wisconsin, 51 to 46 . In arizona, 50 to trumps 47 . Joining me, charlie savage, msnbc contributor, charlotte alter as well from time magazine. Lets get into it. Lets go to you, charlie, first. The president was in nevada yesterday, today hes heading to southern california. How do you suppose the campaign is processing these numbers with just over two weeks until the election . I think that the Biden Campaign has to be very optimistic right now. Theyre never going to say it out loud. Theyll not say were complacent, theyll say a push to the end. This has been a very stable race and these polls are very good for the Biden Campaign. If these things continue on the pace they are now, notwithstanding the experience everyone had and the surprise we had in 2016, i think we can count on the Biden Campaign today. Despite trump trailing in the polls, what do you think about the fact that he is clinging to one marker as a size of success, that being crowd size . I guess you could add enthusiasm to that as well. Is the president deluding himself . This is hardcore supporters, right . This is who is coming out and they wouldnt necessarily win him the election because theyve never been presumed to go anywhere but into the trump camp. I think crowd size is, in part, a measure of whether you take covid seriously and understand that you dont want to be in close breathing proximity to other people when there is an airborne pandemic happening. Trump has done so much to undermine basic understanding of that and respect for that reality among his supporters. Biden supporters see the world differently in that respect, more accurately in that respect. So theyre not going to come out for giant crowd situations for him, and hes not going to encourage him them to, and that what youre looking at. I want to tap into your experience, charlotte. Youve been to wisconsin, talked to many voters there. Is bidens lead what youve heard on the ground about biden support . I certainly believe the polls, i certainly think biden is doing well there. Its hard because there also are undercurrents of sort of suspicion and misinformation, and, you know, other sorts of unlogic that are underpinning a lot of trumps support there in wisconsin. But i totally agree about crowd size. I mean, its important to note also that the Biden Campaign is purposely not doing events with big crowds for the exact reason of coronavirus. They dont want there to be big crowds gathering to see joe biden. And what about what you write about joe bidens attempt to go after President Trumps edge on the economy is working . Explain that. How so . So one of the president s last best arguments for reelection is that he presided over a great economy before covid19 hit. And thats something that hes talked about a lot and that his supporters have talked about a lot. I interviewed business leaders, investors, economists at major think tanks to hear what they thought of the plans that biden has put forward, and all of them said that, you know, they actually think that bidens plans are likely to bring the country out of the postcovid economic slump and are far from, you know, destroying the economy, which is something that the president has repeatedly said. Hes repeatedly accused biden of attempting to destroy the economy, which is not true. Isnt that something that biden can point to as well, the upward trend at the end of his administration with barack obama, the fact that they handed donald trump a Strong Economy . Yeah, absolutely. And, you know, another, you know, important aspect of this is that biden has maintained a strong lead in the polls over the last weeks and months, and the markets have not shuddered in response to that. You would think if investors and leaders and economists were really worried about joe biden being in charge of the economy that the markets would tank at the prospect of him winning. And, in fact, things have stayed remarkably stable, and, you know, there is a poll that came out earlier this month from cnn that showed trump and biden essentially tied in terms of who voters think would do better on the economy. In may trump was up by 12 by that metric. Im not hearing that voters, economists, investors are worried about a biden economy. Absolutely. Charlie, what about Governor Whitmer who today very much criticized the president s rhetoric and rally, saying it n incites domestic terrorism. His Campaign Says hes just having fun. Weve seen this for five or six years where trump says the outrageous thing and people say, thats outrageous, and he says, were just joking, cant you take a joke . Close to a plot of terrorists to kidnap and kill her is a real bad time to be making a joke like that, but thats donald trump and thats the moment were in. Can i ask what your take on this is, charlotte, based on your conversation with voters . What do you think the perception is in moments like this for the president . Certainly in michigan, there is a lot of fierce anger at Governor Whitmer over the lockdowns. The president is certainly tapping into a deep well of resentment that is, frankly, armed and scary. I saw people outside Trump Supporters outside a biden event who were openly carrying weapons, not necessarily threatening to use them, but there is certainly a sort of violent strain to the resistance to whitmers lockdown orders, and i think the president is absolutely feeding into that. Great chat, charlie savage, charlotte alter. Good to see you guys. Thank you. The hugs were seen all around the world and a lot of people were unhappy about it. Yesterday alone 80,000 people voted. The president is there today making up for a state he barely lost in 2016. Megan fitzgerald also in carson city for us. Megan, with a welcome to you, i know the president will be holding a rally there tonight. Give me a sense of what the state of the race is in nevada this year. Reporter alex, its a really great question. As you mentioned, President Trump is expected to be here later today. As you can see behind me, many of his supporters, these rally goers already standing in line to get to the tarmac. Not a lot of people Wearing Masks, not a lot of social distancing happening here. It was just two weeks ago that President Trump was hospitalized for covid19. Now, of course, hes back on the campaign trail with a very rigorous schedule. We saw him yesterday in wisconsin. We saw him in michigan. And then, of course, today he woke up in las vegas, went to Orange County for a Campaign Financing event before, of course, coming here to carson city for a 4 00 p. M. Pacific time rally thats going to take place. I think whats interesting here to note is you take a look at these candidates, you take a look at where they are going in this final stretch, if you will, as we go towards, you know, election day, just 16 days away, and it gives you an idea of where they think their focus needs to be, where they need to put that lastminute legwork, and nevada certainly one of those locations. Obviously we know that there is about six electoral votes up for grabs here. Back in 2016, it was Hillary Clinton who was able to grab this state. But the Campaign Officials here for trump say, look, we believe that nevada is in play for us despite the polling numbers, specifically the New York Times sienna poll that states biden is ahead by six points. They believe nevada is in play, and they point to the economy. They say, look, 2019 really wreaked havoc with the economy, many people on unemployment, and thats President Trumps strong point, where hell be able to make inroads to voters here. Tonights event will be the fifth time that President Trump has visited this state this year alone, just within 2020, so, frfr of course, its yet to be seen if all these visits help him move t the needle closer to potentially taking this state on election day. Alex . You note this is about five and a half hours away, and the mom in me comes out, and im looking at all those people walking around. Give me a sense of how many have masks on, because they are packed in right now waiting to get inside, let alone a typical Trump Campaign rally where we dont see social distancing. Reporter absolutely. Its a really great question, because obviously weve been reporting on what experts are calling the second wave. Were seeing coronavirus numbers spiking across the country. Nevada is no different. As you mentioned, we arent seeing a lot of people Wearing Masks at all. Many people saying, President Trump, he got the coronavirus, he survived. If he can survive the coronavirus, why do i need to be concerned . Thats sort of the sentiment thats out here, and the visuals that youre seeing here really do speak for themselves. People dont seem to be concerned about that, not Wearing Masks and not social distancing. I tell you, theres one reason to be concerned. Not everybody gets the kind of treatment he got at walter reed military medical hospital, so theres one reason right there. Megan fitzgerald, thank you, megan. Lets go back to the white house. It got attention and mixed reviews on both sides of the aisle, so heres what happened. Mr. Chairman, i just want to thank you. This has been one of the best set of hearings that ive participated in, and i want to thank you for your fairness and the opportunity of going back and forth. It leaves one with a lot of hope. Thank you so much for your leadership. To senator feinstein, youre a joy to work with. Joining me now, former congresswoman katie hill. She also hosts a new podcast thats launching on tuesday, and its called naked politics with katie hill. That sounds like its going to be fun. All right, katie, were going to get into this. What you saw there, you tweeted about that moment. Give me your reaction. Share that with the viewers. Well, i realize that i was still making that face when the camera came to me, the face of watching that moment again. You know, listen, i have a great deal of respect for senator feinstein. I think that shes had a relationship for decades with lindsey ghlraham, but to hear h say this was a great set of hearings when so many of us are watching and thinking its completely a sham and that we are about to see the complete demise of the Supreme Court and hear her talk about the respect that she has for him, it just literally makes me nauseous. And thats a similar reaction that many are having. Do you think senator feinstein, who did receive a lot of backlash for that hug should have as we watch it again a couple of times, it was senator graham who went in for the hug, but she reached out her hand to shake hands. Yeah. I dont think she i dont know. Its hard. What i would have preferred is if she didnt shower him with compliments in the first place. I think that was not deserved when we know this is a political move on their part, completely hypocritical, and its ramrodding through a nomination that shouldnt be happening right now. Speaking of that, the Senate Judiciary committee is expected to vote on judge barretts nomination on october 22nd. What are your thoughts about this timeline and how fast this process is going . Its a joke. Its just the exact opposite of the argument that they made when obama had an appointee before the election, and that was ten months before. So i think that this you know, theyre trying to get this through before the election. It shows you how worried they are about the results of the election, not only for the white house but also for the senate. And that this is the last chance theyre going to have to be able to push this through. There are not a lot of pools that are available to democrats to stop the nomination. I think were aware of that and its up to us to make sure we win in november by a lot in the bidenharris win and that we win the senate seats in sweeping members so we can make the reforms necessary to deal with this Supreme Court that has been completely politicized. We all heard Vice President nominee Kamala Harris criticizing judge barrett. Lets take a listen to that. And do you believe that Climate Change is happening and its threatening the air we breathe and the water we drink . Senator, again, i was wondering where you were going with that. You have asked me a series of questions that are completely uncontroversial like whether covid19 is infectious, whether smoking causes cancer and then trying to analogize that and try to get an opinion out of me that is a matter of public debate, and i will not do that. Youve made that clear it is a debatable point. Its one of the many issues she chose not to comment on. What do you think of her refusal to answer some questions . She did her job, right . She did exactly what they expected of her chfwhich was to avoid every tough question. By not commenting, by saying she refused to engage on these issues such as Climate Change, such as what the president s rights are in the case of a contested election on choice and on roe v. Wade. I think all of that showed us exactly where she really does stand, and its completely concerning. I really hope that we have the opportunity to rectify this after november. Yep. Another contentious moment during the hearing thats getting some attention, lets take a look at that. What are the five freedoms of the First Amendment . Speech, religion, press, assembly speech, press, religion, assembly what am i missi missing . Address or redress. You said you were having flashbacks of rick perry. I had to smile on that one. It is concerning to you. Yeah, what was it, when rick perry forgot i dont even energy, wasnt it . I think it was energy. Yeah, it was the function of something and then he ended up becoming the secretary. Its one of those things that im not planning on you know, im not a judge, im a professor of law, im not going to be in front of the senate for hearings on those kinds of things. But, man, if shes forgetting one and shes forgetting the one about protest, thats concerning as well. Congresswoman katie hill, im glad we got this underway. And you pointed out everybody works hard, but working hard is sending. But competing is even more consequential. You can work hard, but did you compete with everything that you had. Competing because you know what is at stake. What is at the heart of winning. My good friends congressman butter kneelbutt butter field and different price which represent first and fourth districts with key sense cidece honor, they can tell you were doing both, working hard and were competing like so much is at stake for this nation. The very soul of the nation is at stake. Folks, as my coach used to say in college, it is go time. It is the most important election in our life times. Going to make all the difference here in North Carolina. The choice is clear as it has ever been and the stakes have never been higher. The stakes in this election remind me of something my dad used to say when he lost a job up in scranton when coal died and he moved to delaware, he used to say joey, a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It is about your dignity. Ask it is about respect. It is about your place in the community. And he would say, this is the gods truth, if i heard it once, i heard it 20 times, it is about being able to look your kid in the eye and say honey, it is going to be okay. That is a lesson ive never forgotten. When i grew up surrounded by a lot of hard working folks in scranton, pennsylvania and claymonth ocla claymont, delaware where we moved. How many people can look their kid eye and say it is going to be okay and mean it. Over half the people in america say they got a bill for 400 they didnt expect in one month, they couldnt pay it. They had to borrow or sell something. Unemployment is way up. Just this week, 1,200,000 people filed for unemployment. Folks are worried about making their next mortgage payment or rent payment. Whether their health care will be ripped away in the middle of a pandemic. Worried about sending their kids to school, worried about not sending their kids to school. They see folks at the top, they are doing better than ever while they are left to wonder who is looking out for me. Well, that is Donald Trumps presidency. More than 217,000 americans dead because of covid19. 4,000 here in the state of North Carolina. On friday, we saw the highest number of new cases in one day inside ju since july. And the last two days, worst days since july. Yet the other night, trump said in one of his rallies weve turned the corner. My grandfather would say this guys gone around the bend if he thinks weve turned the corner. Turned the corner . Things are getting worse. He continues to lie to us about the circumstances. Experts say were likely to lose as many many as 200,000 additional lives between now and the end of the year all because this president cares more about his park avenue perspective on the world, the stock market, than he does about you. Because he refuses to follow the science. It is estimated that if we just wore masks, if we just wore masks, wed save twr nbetween nw and the end of the year 100,000 lives. His own head of the cdc said that. And you know what is really sad about this . The president knew how dangerous this virus was all the way back in january. And he hid it from the country. He is on record, he told would bebob woodward that the disease was deadly. And here is what he did. According to the New York Times, three, four days ago, his straik gave wall Street Investors a heads up but he didnt tell us. Just his friends on wall street. That is why they made so much money by, quote, selling short. Well, who got sold short . Yall got sold short. You know what is coming . But what happened to the rest of us. He tried to claim with woodard, he didnt want to panic the American People. The American People do not panic. Trump panicked. And his selfish behavior is no surprise. After all, this is the same man who looks at americans who put their lives on the line like so many tens of thousands here in North Carolina have done, like my son beau did he calls them suckers and losers. These are our heros. They are the people who sacrificed. They are the back boeb of thibo country. And now how many chairs were empty at the dining room table last night because of this negligence . Folks, were so much better than this. Despite the crisis we face, we have enormous opportunity and we can build back better, but we have as to stand up and take it back. Look, we can build an economyas back. Look, we can build an economy that gives everyone an equal chance to get ahead. For example, communities with color here in North Carolina and across the country, the question is, how do we break that cycle where in the good times you lag behind and bad times you get hit the hardest and first. And a recovery that lapses the bounceback. The answer is about justice, criminal justice, police reform. I know this nation is Strong Enough to face systemic racism and provide speech for our families and Small Businesses that too often bear the brunt of looting and burning. We have no need for rm aed maar militias roaming the streets of america. This the united states. We should have no tolerance for extremist white supremacist groups menace beiing our commun. But if you say we have no need to face racial injustice, you havent opened your eyes to the truth. There have been powerful voices for justice in recent months. George floyds 6yearold daughter who i met with and the family, i knelt down to say hi to her and she looked at me and said mr. Vice president , daddy changed the world. Daddy changed the world. Jacob blake mother with whom i met says violence didnt reflect her son and this nation needs healing. And said that she prayed for the police officers. Doc rivers, basketball coach, choking back takers when he said were the ones getting killed, were the ones getting shot. Weve been hung. It is amazing why we keep loving this country and this country doesnt love us back. Think about that. Think about what it takes to be a black person, that love this country today, a deep love for this country and it hasnt been recognized. We need leadership that deescalates tensions, opens lines of communication, and brings us together to heal and to hope as president that is precisely what ill do. But true justice is also about jobs, good paying jobs, financial stability. It was right here in durham a century ago that an oasis of black owned businesses thrived even in the era of jim crow. Paris street was wchbt first examples of flourishing black middle Class Community in america, a place that offered the country a glimpse of what we could become if we chose to live up to our founding values. Giving families of color a real shot at a home, start a small business, send a child to college debtfree so they could build wealth and pass opportunity down through generations. It is what built every other middle class group in america. That is how we deliver equity. And another example, more and more women are dropping out of the workforce in this recession, whether in citiessuburbs. I have a plan to build with the pandemic responsibly, testing, tracing being masking, not politicizing the race for a vaccine, planning for its safe and equitable distribution, providing funding for ppe and other resources, for schools to reopen safely. Easing the care giving crisis, squeezed between raising your kids and caring for an aging loved one. And protecting your health care in middle of this pandemic, why do republicans have the time to hold a hearing on Supreme Court instead of addressing the Economic Needs of communities. Ill tell you why for real. It is about wiping obamacare off the books. That is what it is about. Because they nominee has said in the past the law should be struck down. If they get their way, 100 million americans will lose their protect
